Social media is focus in schools campaign By Megan Managan

Soon, Mercer Island residents will begin to see the roll out of various options for a new Island school. A new school is just one element present in all three options for upgrading Island schools. The Mercer Island School District Board of Directors is looking for feedback on the type, design, placement and cost of a new school. The process, to be handled by Triangle Associates, will rely on a multi-front communications plan, to extend over all facets of the planning process that will include Facebook, websites, community meetings and more. Beginning this week, the district will post information on its website outlining the various options, meetings and other important information. Meanwhile, Triangle is working to create a Facebook page, as

I would want a set of large meetings with large conversations.” MISD Superintendent Gary Plano said one perception about the Island is that it’s a newly built community, when actually it’s a mature community and new infrastructure is fairly rare. In recent years, there have been few new large-scale projects built by bonds. “That doesn’t happen a lot here,” he said. Wheeler also asked the board what they felt the key messages should be. “Sp ace requirements and how they are different now than they used to be 30 years ago,” said board member Adair Dingle. “The way teaching is today, we don’t teach the way we did in the ’80s,” said Pat Braman. Emanuels said he wants to make sure people know that there is still the capacity problem and that there is still a big problem to solve. “We have 28 portables and some are 20 years old,” said Plano. “Capacity has to be the key message,” said Myerson. “We’re lacking key places for students, and somehow we have to solve that problem.” The board also wanted to make sure the community understood the amount of work and various things the board has done to get

The community is going to have to react to the tradeoffs and what is important to them.” Braman added that because of those tradeoffs, it’s not going to be possible to get everything in a perfect package, but it is important to weigh the choices because one tradeoff may have l a r g e r Dave Myerson i m p l i c a tions than others. The board also had a discussion about how to include the bond that failed last winter. The former bond, which is much different than the options currently being considered, will be included in the timeline of what work the board has done thus far. “I think we should leave it there,” said Myerson. “If the community would like to bring it up, they should.” “I certainly think having information about what the bond was should be part of the process,” said Braman. The board will hold its next regular meeting on Thursday, Oct. 25. Information concerning community meetings will be posted online at www.mireporter.com as meetings are scheduled.

For anyone stumbling across the scene in the back parking lot at Mercer Island High School on Friday morning, it was a disturbing scene. Two cars were crumpled as if hit head-on, with bodies and blood surrounding the scene. Students in the MIHS Drama 2 class depicted the chaos of an accident scene for the school on Oct. 12, part of the school’s annual mock DUI. The scene: the driver of one vehicle, who was drunk, was driving a group of friends when he swerved and hit another vehicle full of students head-on. The impact of the crash sent one student through the windshield, another suffered a broken leg and yet another lay dead outside the vehicle. Narrated by Scott Logsdon of the Mercer

Island Fire Department, the fire department responded as they would in a real accident. The event, which the school and department have put on for over 10 years, showcases the dangers of drinking and driving. Members of the Drama 2 class who participated in the event include: Kaya McRuer, Jason McRuer, Allie Ritcey, Greg Callahan, Clayton Crawford, Chanarah Caupain, Andrew Padgett, Zoe Levin, Megan Guedel, Chris Goodwin, Anais Gralpois and Jay Rosenstein.

Elect Maxwell R

ep. Marcie Maxwell of Renton is our choice for a third-term representing the 41st District. In her first two terms in the state House of Representatives, Maxwell, a Democrat, has proven herself a valuable and influential leader and thinker on issues important to the Eastside. In particular, she has shown leadership in education and the needs of small business. Her opponent, Republican Tim Eaves of Issaquah, is running in part because he saw that no one was stepping up to challenge Democrat Maxwell in her re-election bid. Eaves is new to the 41st District — before redistricting, he was in the 48th Legislative District in northeast King County. He told the Municipal League he’s running because Rob McKenna will need a like-minded House and Senate to advance his agenda if he’s elected governor. That seems pretty lame to us. We want our lawmakers to advance the agenda of their constituents and not merely serve as a vote in the Legislature. Also troubling is his view on early childhood education in particular — he wants proof that it’s necessary. Anyone who pays attention to education issues knows that a key to a child’s success in school is getting them ready to learn. Eaves is an experienced and successful engineer and business owner. But he does not seem tuned in to the scope of economic disparity across the district. Maxwell, on the other hand, has invested a great deal to know the people and their issues in all her district’s cities. She is often on the Island — from Chamber luncheons to Summer Celebration to Rotary functions and more. She understands that some families need help. She understands that education, starting in early childhood, is a key to success in the future. She is serving on committees that will ensure that basic education is fully funded. She and Eaves also diverge on Initiative 1240, which if approved would allow for charter schools, something Washington’s voters have already rejected three times. Eaves supports the initiative; Maxwell wants our tax dollars spent to ensure that all students succeed, not just a select few. Maxwell is leader on a number of broad issues, including quality of life, that are important to her entire district — and the state. We need her compassion and leadership in Olympia.

To the editor Ref. 74 expands civil definition of marriage I support Referendum 74’s expansion of the civil definition of marriage to include same gender couples. Marriage is a social good. It promotes stable and durable family relationships. Married couples have increased happiness, life expectancy and economic security. Children also benefit from living in households with secure and stable relationships. Two-thirds of children are now born to unmarried households. We need more marriage, not less. But there is a more fundamental reason to support this referendum. Martin Luther King Jr. once observed that “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” Gays and lesbians have suffered from explicit discrimination for too long. As a Christian, I believe that all that the Divine creates is good, and that we should love our neighbors as ourselves. Now is a time that we, as a society, can put an end to one aspect of oppression, and promote justice and positive social relationships. Bennet McConaughy

Laws not deviancy dictate marriage definition In his Oct. 10 letter to the editor, Carl Dodrill warns that by passing R-74 — and thereby allowing same-sex couples to wed — voters will open the door to incestuous and polygamous unions. The truth is, marriage among close family members or multiple people won’t happen any time soon because both violate Washington state law. Marrying someone of the same sex does, too. But here’s the deal: a law gets changed when there’s enough

public support for it. Civil marriage between two loving same-sex adults has that support. That’s why our legislature passed it, the governor signed it, and a host of businesses, including Amazon, Microsoft, Starbucks and Nordstrom, back it. So do many churches, synagogues, labor unions and socialservice agencies. Now it’s up to us, the voters, to do the right thing and make it a reality. Mr. Dodrill, do you favor polygamy or allowing close relatives to marry each other? If so, can you generate enough support to get those ideas through our legislature? Can anyone? Probably not, and that’s why they’re non-starters and your fears are baseless. As a volunteer for Washington United for Marriage, I’ve seen the support for equality up close. I’ve seen it from same-sex couples who have been together for decades and wish to be married like everyone else. I’ve seen it from parents saddened that their gay or lesbian children have had to remain single. I’ve seen it from straight adults who say it’s a matter of

fairness. A “yes” vote on R-74 reaffirms the importance of marriage rather than threatening it. It guarantees churches the right to decide which couples they’ll marry. So isn’t it about time to abandon false fears and support the equal right of all loving adults to wed? Elizabeth Rhodes

The leaves are coming News has it that attack is imminent. We have maybe 24 hours before we are faced with aliens from the sky, that mad mixture of two gases that results in the clear liquid that batters my increasingly unprotected noggin. It may not be War of the Worlds, but it certainly is war of the seasons. But it’s leaves, not rain, that is on my mind. This year we’ve been blessed, a word I don’t usually invoke, with sunny shine and warmth. And the second blessing: the summer god has enjoyed an extra latte while the storm gods have been held at bay, so

YWCA Works to End Homelessness No child should have to worry about what they are going to be having for dinner, or where they will be spending the night. Unfortunately, for many children in our community these worries are part of their reality. As our economy continues to slowly recover from the stubborn recession, homelessness remains an issue for too many people. Statistics show that families with children make up almost half the homeless population. U.S. Census statistics show that children living in single-parent families headed by females are four times more likely be living in poverty and seven times more likely to be living in deep poverty than children living in married couple families. YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish is a leading organization in helping to move these women and families out of crisis and empowering them to achieve lasting independence. YWCA programs to help women and their families include: homelessness intervention and affordable housing in the forms of emergency housing, transitional housing and perma-

In 2011, the YWCA introduced a digital media platform to create an interactive community and enhance its existing advocacy efforts on behalf of women and their families. It is called Firesteel and can be accessed at firesteelwa.org. Firesteel provides a platform for users to share opinions, reach out to friends, comment on topics of interest, and receive information. Its goal is to advocate for social change and continue to work to end homelessness in Washington State. The Firesteel network links with both Facebook and Twitter.

Celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month Susan G. Komen® Funds Local Research to Help Reduce Breast Cancer Risk

ou may be well aware of vitamin D’s part in building better bones, but did you know it might also help in prevention of breast cancer? Unfortunately, many of us in the Northwest are not getting enough vitamin D. Overweight individuals are at increased risk of low vitamin D levels, possibly because excess fat absorbs and holds onto vitamin D, making it unavailable to the body. With funding from Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, Anne McTiernan, M.D, Ph.D., of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, has embarked on an important new study investigating vitamin D insufficiency and weight, two interrelated risk factors for breast cancer. Many studies have shown that being overweight can result in an increase in risk of postmenopausal breast cancer. Vitamin D may reduce production of fat tissue, which would result in lowering breast cancer risk factors related to obesity. Vitamin D by itself has also been associated with a reduction in the creation of cancer in laboratory experiments. Dr. McTiernan’s study enrolled 218 women in a year-long, nutrition and exercise based weight loss program. Participants met regularly with a study nutritionist to learn strategies for healthy eating and weight loss, and also worked closely with a specialist to develop and maintain a moderateintensity aerobic exercise program.

Enrollees were randomly assigned to receive a daily dose of vitamin D or a placebo pill with no active ingredient. “To our knowledge, there are no prior studies on the effect of vitamin D and weight on breast cancer prevention, and the proposed study is therefore highly novel,” says Dr. McTiernan. “If positive results follow, it can translate into clinical and public health practice, and may provide women and physicians with additional options for reducing risk for breast cancer.” Dr. McTiernan’s research is just one example of Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s global medical research funds being invested right here in the Puget Sound region, with a focus on breast cancer prevention and early detection. Susan G. Komen is the largest nongovernment funder of breast cancer research in the world. Komen has invested over $2 billion into research and community health in its 30 years, providing $58 million in new research funding for 2012 alone. Funding scientific research into a cure for breast cancer is an important way Komen Puget Sound invests the money it receives through donations. Twentyfive percent of net funds raised is pooled and distributed through Komen National Breast Cancer Research and Training Grants. The other 75 percent supports early detection, mammogram screenings and treatment support for low income and underserved women throughout Western Washington.

“Finding ways to prevent breast cancer is a major goal of Komen’s research program. We invest in research like this to help women get the best answers, based on good science, on ways they can reduce their risk of breast cancer or avoid it all together.” Chandini Portteus

Mercer Island boys golf finishes third in KingCo By Megan Managan

mmanagan@mi-reporter.com

Describing this fall’s golf season, Mercer Island head coach Tyson Peters said “refreshing, surprising and hopeful.” Three words that describe exactly what the Islanders went through this fall, enjoying a run that was unexpected until it happened. With a roster of young and largely inexperienced players, the team had figured on a middle-of-KingCo finish this season, but what happened instead was an impressive 5-2 record and missing second place by just one stroke. The Islanders faced Bellevue last Tuesday, Oct. 9, in the final match of the regular season, knowing the winner would take second, and the loser third. The Islanders lost, 186-187. “It was heart-wrenching,” said Peters of the loss. He said after the first couple of guys finished and played really well, the team had the lead, but the last couple finished “not so hot,” and Bellevue took over the lead. Mercer Island’s final player played extremely well, he said, but so did Bellevue’s, and it was just enough for the

Wolverines to win. “It came down to one shot,” he said. “It was a seesaw.” With the loss, Mercer Island finished third in the regular season standings, with Bellevue in second and undefeated Interlake in first. The Islanders’ only two losses of the season were against the top two teams. Against Bellevue on Tuesday, Zach Evens was the top finisher, shooting a 34, while Josh Graham and Braden Williams each had 36. Eric Kim finished with 40 strokes, Luke Mounger and Ryan Nguyen both had 41 and Sam Varon had 42. William Medlock had 45, William Mansfield had 47 and Drew Christofferson shot 49. “Technically, we probably didn’t play our best,” said Peters. “But it was definitely exciting to be in that position, especially when we didn’t think we would be. We are really young and inexperienced, and with that you assume that you aren’t going to be as competitive, but they really showed some underlying talent.” Peters credited the team with working hard all season, in practice and at

The top six from Mercer Island participated, including: Zach Evens, Josh Graham, Eric Kim, Sam Varon, William Medlock and Luke Mounger. The match was played at Willows Run in Redmond. “Essentially, we have the big three, Zach, Josh

and Eric, and we certainly hope, more like expect, those three to get through,” said Peters of the KingCo meet. “If we can get any of the other three to qualify that would be fantastic.” Forty-eight golfers make the trip to KingCo and the top 16 earn spots in the SeaKing District tournament on Oct. 22. The district event includes 32 golfers from the Metro conference, and the top 20 move on to next spring’s state tournament. “The goal is to get a minimum of three to districts and then, obviously, the other goal is to try and compete as a team at state,

Mercer Island falls to Interlake By Megan Managan

mmanagan@mi-reporter.com

The last time that Interlake and Mercer Island met, back on Sept. 18, the Saints held the Islanders to their only draw of the season. On Thursday, Oct. 11, the Saints upped the game, beating the Islanders 1-0 and handing Mercer Island its first league loss of the season. “Interlake is a very good team,” said Islander head

coach Terry Ryan. Ryan said Mercer Island scored a goal in the 50th minute, what would have been the game’s first point, but the goal was called back for being offsides. Interlake’s Camille Sullivan hit the mark in the 65th minute, assisted by Emma Bergstrom on a free kick, to score the game’s only goal. Interlake goalie Catie Cetzendaner earned the shutout for the Saints. The Islanders are now 9-1-1 this season, and 11-1-1 overall. Mercer Island will travel to Liberty on Thursday, Oct. 18, and will host Mount Si on Tuesday, Oct. 23. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. The team will then travel to play Bellevue on Oct. 25 in the final game of the regular season.

Mercer Island football holds off Liberty Islanders host Mount Si this Friday for homecoming game By Megan Managan

mmanagan@mi-reporter.com

It took until the fourth quarter, but the Mercer Island football team was able to outscore Liberty and earn the win last Friday night. The Islanders won 7-3. The game was scoreless throughout the first half, though the Islanders marched into Liberty territory several times. On the team’s second drive of the game, quarterback Brian Higgin’s pass to Steen Swedstedt was intercepted on the 6-yard line, and returned for 39 yards. But following possession for the Patriots, Mercer Island’s defense held strong. The game continued back and forth with each side holding the other off, until Liberty’s Josh Johnson kicked a 26-yard field goal with 1:48 left in the third quarter, boosting the Patriots to a 3-0 lead. Just minutes later at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Risley Lesko made

a 1-yard dash across the goal line to lift the Islanders into the lead. The kick from Archibald Pedersen was good, giving Mercer Island the 7-3 lead. Lesko’s touchdown was his 10th career rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter. Later in the quarter, he passed the 1,000 yards rushing threshold. As a team the Islanders had 287 yards total, with just 64 from passing. The team’s 13 passes during the game was the lowest since playing Chief Sealth 28 games ago, when the Islanders called just 10 pass plays. The team also lost 57 yards due to five penalties, much less than the Islanders’ average of 11 penalties per game. This Friday the Islanders will host Mount Si for homecoming. Mount Si lost last week to No. 1 Bellevue, 49-10. Due to the Wildcat loss, the Islanders moved into a tie for the No. 2 spot in the league with Mount Si, holding a 4-1 league and 5-2 record overall. This Friday the homecoming parade is scheduled to begin in downtown Mercer Island at 4:30 p.m., with the football game beginning at 7 p.m.

There is no drinking water or sipping beverages. It is a day to ask g-d for forgiveness and start the year fresh. It is also a day to remember those who are no longer with us. Many Jews will sit in synagogue and pray through a service called “Yizkor.” This is a part of the Yom Kippur service, a set of prayers to honor those who are deceased. I have never sat through the Yizkor portion of the Yom Kippur service, since I am very fortunate to have my family still with me. This year I stayed for Yizkor to support my husband and his family. I also reflected on those community heroes like Andrea Bucklin and the great contributions that she made unselfishly to our community.

On the breaking of the fast, one should always start with something a little sweet, such as a taste of honey or a piece of candy followed by a light meal.
