Islanders go toe to toe in Dist. 3 County Council Race In first-ever bid for public office, Forlenza challenges two-term incumbent Rosenfeld for FH county council post

Co-owner of the Technology Center Office Building in Friday Harbor, Marc Forlenza is making a first-ever run for political office in the race for the District 3 County Council position. He and his wife, Denise, have lived on San Juan Island for nearly a decade. He is a former restaurant owner, a real estate investor and international marketing executive, based in Europe and Latin America. Journal: If elected, you would be the Town of Friday Harbor's representative on the County Council. What priorities do the town and county share? MF: There are priorities that people in San Juan County share, regardless of whether they live in Friday Harbor, East Sound, Lopez, Shaw or Waldron. Perhaps the most fundamental is ferry service and making sure that the county gets its fair share of state and federal assistance. Next, the most important shared priority is the state of the local economy. I believe there is an unprecedented opportunity for the town and the county to begin a new era of

mutual trust and harmony. The confluence of new town and county administrators and three county seats up for grabs can set the stage to mend fences and help seek long-needed solutions to old problems like See Forlenza, Page 4

Journal: If elected, you would be the Town of Friday Harbor's representative on the County Council. What priorities do the town and county share? HR: Technically, I represent the citizens of Friday Harbor, but it’s important to them for their representative to know town government. As a former town fire chief, then town council member for six years and being married to the mayor, I kinda have that covered. Still, I attend all the evening Town Council meetings to stay informed and give a county update. Current issues include the county’s use of the town’s Sutton Road property, solid

waste, affordable housing, a connector road to service the newly annexed Buck property, and Warbass traffic diversion. The town contracts sheriff, court and other services from the county. Some county committees

Commission cites contract to calm concern By Steve Wehrly Journal reporter

The San Juan Island Hospital District Commission invited the public to meet again on Oct. 2 as it unveiled its response to concerns about Catholic Church interference with reproduction and endof-life services and policies, at the soon-to-be-completed Peace Island Medical Center. Dr. Michael Wingren, assistant medical director of the Peace Health Medical Group, now taking over to provide physician services from the InterIsland Medical Center, also released a letter addressing some of the same concerns. (See page 7). Local residents, many of them active with Planned Parenthood

and other health care and civic organizations, raised the issue after Catholic Bishop J. Peter Sartain reportedly asked Peace Health's St. Joseph Medical Center to stop providing laboratory services to Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood, which operates women’s health care services facilities in Whatcom, Skagit and San Juan counties. Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood CEO Linda McCarthy objected to that suggestion, and PeaceHealth and Catholic officials in Bellingham, Seattle and Vancouver are considering various alternatives. Additional concerns were voiced when PeaceHealth and Denverbased Catholic Health Initiatives announced completion of a first
