New doggy daycare, spa opens next week Posted online Mon., Oct. 1 Photo Courtesy Dawg Town Tacoma A new business offering daycare and grooming services for dogs is scheduled to open next week in Tacoma. Dawg Town Tacoma Daycare & Spa, located at 1602 Tacoma Ave. S., will offer both full- and partial-daycare services, as well as full-service grooming, and even dog obedience training services from a certified dog trainer. Co-owner Molly Miller describes it as a place where dogs get to run around and play with toys, each other or just chill on a bed while receiving lots of love from caring staff that will provide pets with a safe place to stay while their owners are away. "Daycare is a great training tool," says Miller. "Socializing with other dogs and staff will give pets an opportunity to get exercise, learn proper social skills and gain confidence. This will result in a happier and healthier dog, and allow them to direct their energy toward good behaviors." Dawg Town Tacoma Daycare & Spa is scheduled to open on Mon., Oct. 8 in a two-story, 10,000-square-foot facility that will offer little and senior dogs a place to run and play on their own floor, while bigger and more energetic dogs have their own play area. Outside, Dawg Town Tacoma will also offer an indoor/outdoor offleash dog park for people and their dogs to play together. Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. bring your dog, play ball, and meet other dog owners. In January, Dawg Town Tacoma plans to open Big Bark Brew and Espresso on-site. Repairs ahead for century-old Tacoma Brewery District building damaged during rain storm Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor A downtown Tacoma building severely damaged during a rain storm last fall could soon receive more than half-a-million dollars in repairs. The 112-year-old building, located at 2308 South Holgate Street in Tacoma's Brewery District, has served as a warehouse and workshop for the City of Tacoma's public works streets and grounds division. A large section of the roof collapsed into the center of the building on Nov. 22 due to heavy rainfall, causing damage to the interior and exterior facade. An emergency declaration was declared and the city, its insurance provider and Belfor Property Restoration worked together to make sure the building was stabilized, debris was removed, city property was recovered, and testing and abatement of hazardous materials was completed, according to city officials. In addition, temporary scaffolding was erected to support a temporary plastic roof. The city hired Tacoma-based BCRA Design to draw up the final plans for repairs, which were submitted to the city in June. A request for bids was solicited in July and four companies responded: Jones & Roberts Company of Olympia, Wash. -- $429,000; Beisley, Inc. of Belfair, Wash. -- $440,488.32; Pease Construction, Inc. of Lakewood, Wash. -- $461,740; and Lincoln Construction, Inc. of Spanaway, Wash. -- $466,569. Tacoma City Council is scheduled to vote later today on a purchase resolution to authorize funding for the repairs. If approved, a $514,800 contract would be awarded to Jones & Roberts Company of Olympia, Wash., to install a new roof structure over
part of the building, replace the remaining roof, complete repairs to the interior drywall and paint, replace damaged flooring, repair electrical and fire protection systems, and replace existing high bay lighting with energy efficient lighting fixtures. Repairs would begin later this month and be completed in January. The contract amount reflects a base award of $429,000, plus a 20 per cent contingency due to the age of the building and the possibility of discovering additional repairs. Funding is covered under the city's insurance policy after a $100,000 deductible. Tacoma City Council is scheduled to vote on the purchase resolution to authorize funding for the repairs during its meeting on Tues., Oct. 2 at 5 p.m. in City Council Chambers on the first floor of the Tacoma Municipal Building, located 747 Market Street.
