Metro changes dozens of bus routes By GREG ALLMAIN gallmain@fedwaymirror.com
King County Metro Transit is trying to get the word out early about a number of changes coming at the end of the month, and hopes to educate local transit users through a number of online tools. With routes being altered or eliminated outright, Metro Transit General Manager Kevin Desmond said his agency wants to make sure riders are well-informed before the changes hit. “It’s homework time for riders, and we are putting tools online and on the street to help,” Desmond said. “These changes make the best use of limited tax dollars, increase connections between routes and reduce route duplication — and by doing so we meet the needs of more people.” According to the county, dozens of routes will have different stops, travel different streets, or have changed schedules. In continuing efforts to be more efficient and cost-effective, some lowuse routes will be cut completely. Federal Way 9/11 memorial will be ready in 2013 South King Fire and Rescue’s station 64 hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday morning for a 9/11 memorial in Federal Way. The station, 3700 S. 320th St., will be the site of the memorial, which will honor nearly 3,000 victims who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The memorial will feature a steel beam from the wreckage of the World Trade Center, along with names of all the victims. The South King Firefighters Foundation is collecting donations and arranging in-kind contributions. The project is expected to cost about $25,000. The memorial awaits final approval from the City of Federal Way before construction begins, likely in the spring, said assistant chief Gordie Olson. The goal is to finish the project by Sept. 11, 2013. To contribute to the memorial, mail tax-deductible donations to South King Firefighters Foundation, 31617 1st Ave. S., Federal Way, WA 98003. ABOUT THE LEVY
gallmain@fedwaymirror.com
• In the Nov. 6 general election, voters are being asked to approve a $60 million levy. • The money will help rebuild FWHS, improve playground equipment at Federal Way elementary schools, and help standardize the district’s security camera systems. • In the Feb. 14 special election, Federal Way residents said no to the levy in a 55-45 percent split. • The remodeling of Federal Way High School is the district’s top priority as far as construction projects. The district has already saved $50 million for the project, which has a total estimated cost of $110 million. •The district says this capital levy will be less costly to taxpayers because there will be no interest payments. • Cost to taxpayers: The school district anticipates the tax rate for the capital levy would be 90 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value.
As the November election edges closer, those in support of the $60 million levy to rebuild Federal Way High School (FWHS) are making their case for that “yes” vote. Three students from FWHS shared their thoughts on why their school needs to be rebuilt during the Sept. 11 meeting of the Federal Way School Board. The first to speak was FWHS junior Emily Johnson, who said the high school is her home away from home, and is in desperate need of a remodel. “I know we’ve heard a lot about Federal Way High School and the capital levy in the past few months, and I’m sure you’ve heard a lot about the damage that is at our school,” Johnson said. “I could tell you about how the ceiling leaks whenever it rains, and we have to [ more SCHOOLS, page 17 ]
