Groundbreaking ceremony for Gig Harbor Donkey Creek restoration project Posted online Mon., Sept. 10 Image Courtesy City of Gig Harbor The City of Gig Harbor will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Donkey Creek and Estuary restoration project next week. At nearly 13 acres, this project will restore the creek and create new estuary to create a fish friendly habitat and provide opportunities for the public to view and enjoy the beautiful harbor estuarine environment. Once the project is completed, there will be a walking path that connects the newly constructed Austin Estuary Park with Donkey Creek Park along the restored estuary and stream behind the Harbor History Museum. Two federal grants were secured for the $3.7 million project: nearly $1.5 million from the 2010 Transportation and Housing & Urban Development Appropriations Bill, and $800,000 from the 2009 Interior Appropriations Bill. The City of Gig Harbor, in partnership with the Harbor History Museum, looks forward to promoting public education regarding the benefits of environmental preservation and providing a beautiful destination point to attract visitors and enhance connectivity to support the local economy. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Mon., Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. at the Harbor History Museum, 4121 Harborview Drive, in Gig Harbor.

Mars Hill to purchase First Congregational Church in Tacoma Posted online Tues., Sept. 11 Photos Courtesy Mars Hill Church Mars Hill Church has announced it is currently under contract to purchase the First Congregational Church building in Tacoma. According to Mars Hill Church's Web site, the congregation plans to raise $1.5 million and renovate the building before opening it as Mars Hill Tacoma in fall 2013. The Tacoma church will be led by Pastor Bubba Jennings, who served as a pastor for almost a decade at the original Ballard church before moving to the South Sound region to get the Tacoma church going. According to Mars Hill's Web site, the church will

hold a public 'vision and prayer night' on Thurs., Sept. 27, to dedicate the church building. "It gives us great joy to know that the building on the corner of Division and South J Street will not be turned into a parking lot, but rather remain a church for another 100-plus years," said Pastor Jennings in a statement posted on Mars Hill's Web site. The building, located at 918 Division Ave., originally opened its doors on Oct. 11, 1908 and was used as a dormitory during World War II to house and feed soldiers, according to Historic Tacoma. In the 1960s, it was home to Tacoma's first food bank.
