Sounder commuter rail service to South Tacoma, Lakewood begins Oct. 8 Posted online Weds., Sept. 12 Photo Courtesy Sound Transit Sound Transit announced Wednesday it will begin Sounder service to Lakewood and South Tacoma on Mon., Oct. 8.

To celebrate the start of service, Sound Transit will hold a public ribbon-cutting event on Sat., Oct. 6 at the Lakewood, South Tacoma and Tacoma Dome stations. Free rides on the Sounder train will be offered to the public, along with other festivities.

"The start of Sounder service to South Tacoma and Lakewood marks an exciting milestone in the work of Sound Transit to bring commuter rail to more communities in Pierce County," said Sound Transit Board Chair and Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy. "In just a few short weeks, more South Sound residents will be able to experience the convenient, first-class service that more than 10,000 Sounder riders from Tacoma to Everett enjoy each weekday."

When service to Lakewood begins, Sound Transit will operate five peak-service trains that will start at the Lakewood Station (pictured), stop at South Tacoma, and proceed to the Tacoma Dome station and other stations further north. The first northbound train will leave Lakewood at 4:42 a.m. The first afternoon train to Lakewood will leave King Street Station at 4:20 p.m. Morning and evening trains will leave every 25 minutes.

Departure schedules for other south line Sounder stations remain unchanged.

Service to Lakewood and South Tacoma will also include Sound Transit’s popular game day trains, which served more than 132,000 Seahawks, Mariners and Sounders FC fans last year. This fall, Sounder event trains will also serve Husky weekend afternoon games taking place at CenturyLink Field.

Until service begins, testing on the 8.5-mile track from Tacoma to Lakewood will continue. Travelers are urged to take extra caution around the tracks and obey all warning signs.

Classic Photographs from Washington," the collection includes more than 40 large print black and white photographs that showcase how the state of Washington was visually promoted, packaged and sold during the crucial early industrial period. The images also show how photographers represented the increasing diversity of Washington to other Washingtonians. Perhaps the photos worked: Washington's population tripled between 1890 and 1920.

Pierce County, WTC Tacoma host export forum Posted online Weds., Sept. 5 The Pierce County Economic Development Department and World Trade Center Tacoma will host a forum on exporting goods and services this month.

Attendees will learn about the ins and outs from federal, state and local experts, as well as private companies with exporting experience.

There is no charge to attend, and there is ample time for networking and meeting with professionals at hosted display tables.

The forum will be held on Fri., Sept. 28, at Pierce County's Environmental Services Building, located at 9850 64th Street West, in University Place. Time: Registration begins at 8 a.m. The program begins at 8:30 a.m. and will end at noon.

North Pacific Railway, to "Picking Hops," a postcard image of families working the field that was sold to local tourists. In addition to the print photos, the exhibit will also showcase early photography equipment, including famed Northwest photographer Asahel Curtis's view camera and glass plate negatives.

"These were the days before light filters, autocorrect and Instagram, when photographers relied solely on their raw talent and rudimentary equipment to create these fascinating images," said Jennifer Kilmer, the director of the Washington State Historical Society. "This exhibit is especially close to us because we pulled almost exclusively from our collections to show a visual history of Washington, and how it was revealed to the nation at the turn of the century through photographs."

The exhibit focuses on the burgeoning early

industrial society, local communities and thriving farmlands across Washington that were being propagated during the early 1900s. They collectively showcase some of the state's most prominent artists, including Edward Curtis, Asahel Curtis, Darius Kinsey, and Samuel Gay Morse. In addition, a supplemental section explores experimental and expressive works produced later in the century, such as prints from Tacoma photographer Virna Haffer.

The exhibit runs through May 5, 2013 and hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours and free admission every third Thursday, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. General admission is $9.50 for adults; $7 for seniors; $7 students and military with valid ID; children, age 5 and below, and members are always free.

Pierce Transit earns regional transportation award Posted online Weds., Sept. 12 Pierce Transit has received a 2012 VISION 2040 Award from the Puget Sound Regional Council for Pierce Transit Tomorrow. The awards recognize innovative projects and programs that help ensure a sustainable future as the region grows.

"Pierce Transit Tomorrow's long-range planning process for transit service in Pierce County was extensive and well vetted with its constituents," said Bob Drewel, Executive Director of the Puget Sound Regional Council. "Pierce Transit's model makes financial sustainability and transparency central to its provision of services."

VISION 2040 is the region's growth management, economic, and transportation strategy, designed to meet the needs of the 5 million people expected to be living in the region in 2040 (compared to the 3.7 million people living here today). It aims to be an integrated, long-range

vision for the future that lays out a strategy for maintaining a healthy region -- promoting the well-being of people and communities, economic vitality, and a healthy environment.

The Puget Sound Regional Council develops policies and coordinates decisions about regional growth, transportation and economic development planning within King, Pierce, Snohomish and Kitsap counties. The Council is composed of over 80 entities, including all four counties, cities and towns, ports, state and local transportation agencies and tribal governments within the region. In 2012, the Puget Sound Regional Council will select projects for the roughly $400 million in federal funds the region can expect to receive over the next few years. The Puget Sound Regional Council is also the lead regional economic development planning resource and home to the Prosperity Partnership.
