Portland-Seattle long haul for B1 Bomber along I-5
Drivers were surprised to see a supersonic jet bomber fuselage heading up Interstate 5 overnight last weekend. Five Washington State Patrol vehicles traveled with the Boeing-owned B-1 Bomber fuselage, which measured 131 feet long, more than 29 feet wide and 15 feet high. In some spots of I-5, the super load occupied all travel lanes. According to Washington State Department of Transportation officials, the bomber's journey began shortly after 11:30 p.m. Friday, leaving Portland International Airport on I-205 to I-5 in Vancouver and on to Nisqually Weigh Station, just north of Olympia. On Sunday, the load, traveling close to 30 miles per hour, again headed north on I-5 to Boeing Field in Seattle. -- Photo Courtesy WSDOT
City of Tacoma News
Posted online Fri., Sept. 7 Tacoma City Council to discuss neighborhood street improvements Tuesday Tacoma City Council is scheduled to be briefed Tuesday at City Hall on the Citizens Neighborhood Street Improvement and Safety Task Force's final recommendations. In May, Tacoma Public Works staff briefed councilmembers on a plan to create a ballot measure to help pay for neighborhood street and safety improvements. City staff shared the results of a citizen survey of neighborhood street and safety concerns, the proposed timeline to develop a ballot measure, and recommended the formation of a citizen task force. As a result, councilmembers directed staff to facilitate the creation of the Citizen Neighborhood Street Improvement and Safety Task Force. The task force is composed of 27 citizens appointed by City Council to create project criteria emphasizing basic maintenance, pothole repair and citizen safety; develop a project list that is balanced city-wide to make sure all neighborhoods receive local street and safety improvements; and recommend strategies to ensure accountability, transparency, and oversight of street maintenance funds. More information is online at cityoftacoma.org/Page.aspx?nid=1096. Additionally, councilmembers will receive an update on the city's 2011-2012 budget strategy during the meeting Tuesday. Councilmembers will not take public comment during the study session, which will be held on Tues., Sept. 11 at noon in Tacoma Municipal Build-
ing North, 733 Market St., Room 16. Audio from the session will be broadcast live on TV Tacoma and online at tvtacoma.com. Ondemand audio archives are available on the Web within 24 hours of the meeting online at tvtacoma.com. Posted online Thurs., Sept. 6 Volunteer today for Tacoma Arts Commission Tacoma City Council invites individuals who are knowledgeable and passionate about the literary, visual and performing arts to apply for the Tacoma Arts Commission. If you are interested in supporting, enhancing and providing leadership for the arts in Tacoma, this is a great opportunity.
Possible positions include a person representing the Cross District Association or Community Council of Tacoma; an at-large position for a person working outside of professional practice in the arts but who demonstrates a deep interest in and appreciation of cultural and artistic activities; and a professional position for a person who has professional experience or training related to the arts. The Tacoma Arts Commission is especially interested in applicants who live in under-represented parts of the City and bring diversity to the group. Applicants must reside within the city limits of Tacoma. The Tacoma Arts Commission, a body of 15 volunteers, advises City Council on arts-related projects and allocates funding for a wide range of cultural projects, including grassroots art experiences, individual artists' works and arts institutions. The commission is also responsible for the oversight of the Municipal Art Program that devotes one percent of capital construction costs to public art. Commissioners play a vital role directing cultural policy, being ambassadors for the arts and supporting programs such as Spaceworks Tacoma, Art at Work: Tacoma Arts Month and the Tacoma Murals Project. Commission meetings are held at 5 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. Members serve three-year terms and are recommended for appointment by the Council Appointments Committee and confirmed by City Council. To apply, contact Cindy DeGrosse, Mayor's Office, at (253) 594-7848, or visit cityoftacoma.org/cbcapplication. To ensure consideration, applications are due no later than Oct. 5, 2012. For more information about the Tacoma Arts Commission, visit tacomaculture.org and select "The Arts."
