King County released its first Equity and Social Justice Report this week, with the findings of the report showing that inequities exist along the lines of place, race and income in the county. The report found that King County is increasingly diverse, with the non-white population of the county growing 13 percent from 1980 to 2010, with non-white residents making up 35 percent of the total population. That trend is only expected to continue upward because of the fact that 50 percent of King County residents under age 18 are now non-white. More than 100 languages are spoken throughout King County and 11 percent of county residents over age 5 have limited English proficiency, according to the county. The report looked at the 14 “determinants” of equity, which are described as “the conditions in which county residents are born, grow, live, work and age.” Baselines were established and areas where [ more INEQUITY, p. 22 ]

The wife of a wealthy Federal Way widower is accused of stealing part of the elderly man’s fortune. Juliana Min Cratsenberg, 59, faces first-degree theft charges. Her arraignment was set for Aug. 23 at the King County Courthouse (after press time). Prosecutors say Juliana Cratsenberg has no criminal history, according to charging documents. The alleged theft occurred from Sept. 2009 and Jan. 2011. Andrew C. Cratsenberg, 86, is a self-made millionaire who found success in commercial and residential real estate and developments. The
family business includes Cratsenberg Enterprises, formed with his sons, and Cratsenberg Properties LLC, formed with his late wife, Luetta, who died in January 2008. According to an investigation by Federal Way police, the elder Cratsenberg had been showing signs of dementia, possibly for years, before his “unexpected wedding” to Juliana in March 2009. His sons had learned of the marriage a week later through a friend, according to police. The investigation states that Cratsenberg’s sons took legal action to obtain a vulnerable adult protection order. The sons wanted [ more FORTUNE, page 22 ]
