Transit highway changes ruffle residents By NATHAN WHALEN Staff reporter

Residents living on the edge of Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve are concerned proposed changes to an intersection will make driving conditions on Highway 20 even more dangerous. About 20 people, including local residents, state and county transportation officials and State Rep. Norma Smith, met Monday afternoon near the intersection of Highway 20 and Parker Road. Island Transit is planning to alter the triangle-shaped property surrounded by Old Smith Prairie Road, Parker Road and Highway 20. The agency plans to close the two separate intersections and build a new road that bisects the triangle. Plans also call for the addition of a “bike and ride,” several parking spots and a kiosk informing visitors about Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve. Nearby resident Roger See Transit, A7

Haugen’s opponent disowns negative mailers By JESSIE STENSLAND Staff reporter

Haugen’s voting record and fault her for cutting school funding and raising taxes. “Has Mary Margaret Haugen failed our schools? And our children,” one mailer states in bold type next to a photo of a school girl. Haugen, who labeled them as “hit pieces” and “dirty politics,” blames her opponent, Rep. Barbara Bailey, R-Oak Harbor. “It’s pretty awful. Some of them are just plain false,” she

said. “My biggest problem is when they are outright lies.” Bailey, however, said she’s also angry that the “negative” mailers were sent out and she had nothing to do with them. She didn’t even know about them until a friend who received them in the mail showed her. “Sen. Haugen knows and I know that we don’t have any control over independent See Mailer, A7

Incumbent Island County Commissioner Angie Homola and challenger Jill Johnson will move on to the General Election, based on the first count of primary votes Tuesday night. Homola, a Democrat representing District 2, and Republican rival Johnson are neck and neck in the vote count, with Johnson ahead by 1,005 to Homola’s 969 votes. Challengers Jim Campbell and Phil Collier were knocked out of the race. In District 1, incumbent Commissioner Helen Price Johnson, a Democrat, is far outpacing her four rivals, taking 57 percent of the vote. Republican challenger Jeff Lauderdale will go head-tohead with her in November. The EMS levy passed easily with more than 70 percent of the votes. The measure to renew the property tax levy of 50 cents per $1,000 of value for six years needed 50 percent of the votes to pass. Reached by phone, Jill Johnson said she did better than she had anticipated. “I think that when more than 50 percent of the voters cast ballots for someone other than the incumbent — and in her home district — that’s a referendum on the last four years,” she said.

A state senator and her opponent in this year’s campaign are both upset about a series of mailers that criticize the incumbent and distort some of the facts. At least four glossy flyers attacking Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano, hit mailboxes in District 10 last week. The mailers, sent out by the state Republican party and a political committee, go after
