4 candidates vie for top economic development post at Tacoma City Hall

Posted online Weds., July 25 Four finalists vying to be the City of Tacoma's next community and economic development director will take part in a day-long interview process on July 30, officials announced Wednesday. The interviews will include four community panels comMILLERprised of individuals from the WOLFE business district and associations, representatives from local boards, special interest groups, and members of the City's executive leadership team. The panelists will be asked to provide City Manager T.C. Broadnax with a list of the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate. The four candidates were NOGUERA among 69 applicants who applied for the position as part of a nationwide search. The city manager will hold final interviews on July 31. A selection will be made next month. Following the panel interviews, a community meet-andgreet will be held on the fifth floor of the Greater Tacoma JOHNSON Convention and Trade Center, located at 1500 Broadway, from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. to introduce the candidates to the public. Tacoma's community and economic development director is charged with leading economic development strategies and programs city-wide. The final candidates include ANDERSON Ellen Miller-Wolfe, economic development manager for the City of Kirkland, Wash. Over the past six years, Miller-Wolfe has managed the City of Kirkland's economic development, tourism and cultural affairs programs. She holds a master's degree in city and regional planning from Cornell University; Ricardo Noguera, former housing and economic development director for the City of Visalia, Calif. Boat sinks at Foss marina

Posted online Weds., July 25 Photo Courtesy Tacoma Fire Department Tacoma fire fighters responded Wednesday morning to a report of a boat at Foss Harbor Marina that had sunk and was leaking fluids. According to Tacoma Fire spokesperson Joe Meinecke, fire fighters arrived at 821 Dock Street at 7:44 a.m. to find a 32-foot boat listing while tied up at its slip. Operationally, crews stabilized the boat, deployed absorbent pads to contain leaking fluids, and set up a "fog" nozzle to suppress any potentially dangerous fumes. The incident commander coordinated the environmental response with the U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Ecology, City of Tacoma's Environmental Services and Vessel Assist for salvage operations. The previous director, Ryan Petty, resigned on May 25. He has since been hired by the Economic Development Board for Tacoma-Pierce County. Petty's departure was the latest in a series of toplevel departures at City Hall since Broadnax began

as city manager in February. Community relations manager Rob McNair-Huff left the city on June 29. On May 18, Tacoma's finance director Bob Biles resigned. On May 4, deputy city manager Rey Arellano resigned. Finally, Tacoma Fire Department Chief Ronald W. Stephens retired March 29. Stephens was appointed fire chief in 2006, and served 35 years with the department.

Tacoma awarded $105K grant to curb gang activity

Posted online Weds., July 25 The City of Tacoma was awarded a $105,000 grant from the Washington State Partnership Council on Juvenile Justice to pilot a gang reduction and intervention program. Through an established memorandum of understanding, the City plans to assign these funds to four community partner organizations that specialize in individual, family or peer services so they can assist with the pilot program. The organizations include the Northwest Leadership Foundation, Bold Solutions, Fab5 and the Tacoma Urban League. "I was so pleased to hear that we got this grant funding," said Tacoma City Councilmember Victoria Woodards, who chairs the Tacoma

Gang Reduction and Intervention Program Executive Steering Committee and led the 2011 gang assessment conducted to improve the City's efforts to undercut gang growth and highlight positive alternatives to for local youth. "With this important investment in Tacoma's future, we can continue to move forward in our efforts to turn the tide." City staff will lead program efforts to receive and evaluate assessments from concerned citizens and a variety of local agencies, including Tacoma Public Schools, the Tacoma Police Department and Pierce County Juvenile Court to engage these four community partner organizations for further action.
