City OKs land sale for Puyallup Tribe justice center By Todd Matthews, Editor Image Courtesy Puyallup Tribe Tacoma City Council approved a resolution Tuesday authorizing the sale of a parcel of City-owned land to the Puyallup Tribe of Indians to enable the tribe to develop a justice center adjacent to its existing administration building. Under the resolution approved by councilmembers, the 2,641-square-foot parcel will be sold to the Puyallup Tribe for $26,410. According to documents prepared by City staff, the City of Tacoma originally purchased the property, located adjacent to 3009 Portland Avenue East, in 1998 in order to maintain throughalley access between Portland Avenue and R Street. Similarly, councilmembers also approved an ordinance vacating the alley right-of-way between East 30th and East 31st Streets, extending between Portland Avenue East and East R Street, for the future development of the tribe's justice center.
The justice center is planned to be completed in three phases, according to the Puyallup Tribe's Web site. The first phase will include a $8.8 million, 20,237-square-foot correctional facility with room for 43 inmates. The second phase will include a $4.5 million, 12,354-square-foot facility for police operations. The third phase will include a $6.8 million, 16,868-square-foot facility for courtrooms and legal services. Councilmember Marty Campbell, who represents Tacoma's East Side and the neighborhood where the project will be developed, thanked staff for working to complete the deal. He noted the project will be "a holistic approach" to consolidating the tribe's criminal justice operations. "I know this will allow a $20 million investment in East Tacoma, so thank you very much," said Campbell. "This will be a big step forward for the Puyallup Tribe."

Posted online Tues., July 24 Poet, essayist, and University of Washington Tacoma faculty member Janie Miller will host a free walking and writing event next month. Inspired by walk events in Portland designed by poet Kaia Sands, this "Walk Poetic" event will encourage adventurers to experience downtown Tacoma on foot, while being guided through a poetry lesson stopping at various locations to write about the surroundings. All Walk Poetic participants will receive a small notebook, pen, and walking map to use during the walk. Participants may decide to share writings, sketches or other musings, or keep them personal. The Walk Poetic event will be held on Weds., Aug. 1 between 5:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. The 1.5 mile walk, sponsored by DaVita, will begin and end in front of the Woolworth Building on South 11th Street & Broadway and will weave through parks and historical landmarks through downtown and Hilltop. There is no need to pre-register, just join the group in front of the Woolworth Building at 5:15 p.m. Walk Poetic is part of Walk Tacoma, Downtown On the Go's walking series, sponsored by Franciscan Health System, held in April, June and August. The fun, casual walks, now in their third year, encourage downtown employees, residents, and visitors to exercise and enjoy the outdoors by discovering the different walking routes and parks in downtown Tacoma, and to become more aware of just how walkable downtown is. Each walk includes an educational walk (history or poetry) and a power walk. The popular Walk Poetic event on Aug. 1 will also include a power walk led by Liz and Matt from Expand Yoga, for individuals looking for a great outdoor workout.
