Bellevue woman killed in Seattle shooting spree Gunman kills five at two locations as another victim survives; finally turns gun on and kills himself as police close in BY NAT LEVY Bellevue Reporter
A Bellevue woman was one of five killed in a one-man shooting spree in Seattle Wednesday. Only one victim survived the
shootings, and when police found the killer, he took his own life. Gloria Koch Leonidas, 52, was shot at approximately 11:30 a.m. near Town Hall at Eighth and Seneca Streets in Seattle.
Witnesses saw the woman arguing with the shooter, Ian L. Stawicki, in a parking lot. He shot the woman in the head, police say. He then fled the scene in Leonidas’ black Mercedes SUV. A witness attempted to revive Leonidas, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Several hours later, police found the vehicle in West Seattle at the 4100 block of Delridge Way Southwest.
Earlier in the day, the man entered Cafe Racer Espresso at the 5800 block of Roosevelt Way at approximately 11 a.m., and opened fire. Two men were killed at the scene, while two more people died after being taken to Harborview Medical Center. Police do not know the motive of the man, who shot himself in the head when SEE SHOOTING, 5

It’s cars vs. boats on 520 bridge SR 520 bridge openings latest traffic nightmare BY NAT LEVY Bellevue Reporter
Commuters’ greatest enemy on the State Route 520 bridge used to be gridlock. Then it was tolls. But recently, drivers have encountered a new foe: boats. Over the last two months, thousands of drivers have pulled onto
the bridge expecting to pay a toll in exchange for quick passage over Lake Washington, only to encounter an open drawspan on the bridge for boats to pass through. The new issue comes as part of reconstruction of the bridge. Large boats – those over 45 feet – used to pass through the east navigational channel, but construction barges are fortifying the foundation, blocking the path of vessels, said Dave Becher, construction engineering manager for the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Becher said the bridge has opened 29 times since April 1, with the times boats are allowed to pass a result of negotiations between WSDOT and the U.S. Coast Guard. Boats are not allowed to come through the bridge between 6 and 9 a.m., and 4 and 7 p.m. on weekdays. Otherwise, boaters must alert WSDOT at least an hour in advance. However, a few openings have occurred in the late morning, includSEE BRIDGE, 5
The Bellevue School Board has voted unanimously to offer a three-year contract to Dr. Justin (Tim) Mills to become the new superintendent of the district. The vote came during a special school board meeting Tuesday night. Mills, now the superintendent of the North Clackamas School District in Oregon, was one of three finalists for the position, which included Dr. Alex Apostle and Dr. Mark Mitrovich. “I’m very excited about coming to Dr. Tim Mills Bellevue,” Mills said. “It’s a marvelous district. There is a lot of community support and it’s a great district all around. I’m honored.” While board President Paul Mills (no relation to Tim) said all three candidates were solid choices, Tim Mills stood out for his experience and understanding of diverse communities and English language learners. “We felt strongly, and heard loud and clear from the community, that we needed someone who not only can understand our diverse and evolving student and parent population but also help all families thrive in our education system - not just those who speak English,” Mills said. During his visit to the Eastside last week Dr. Mills had SEE SCHOOLS, 5
