n Oak Harbor veteran and his family have an active summer planned – a very active summer. Clark Schroeder, his wife Annemarie and their children, Hannah, 16, Emily, 15, Ella, 13, and Noah, 11, are planning to bicycle from Yorktown, Va., to Oak Harbor.

You read it right - the Schroeder family, along with newly retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Dan Halvorson and his family, of Fort Worth, Texas, will be making the 4,000 mile trip by bike.

“We thought it would be a neat opportunity to do something big together as a family,” Clark said as they gathered together in their Oak Harbor home to discuss their trip.

“We’ve been planning and saving for this trip for five years.”

According to Clark the idea came from Halvorson, whom they met many years ago when Halvorson was stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. Halvorson rode his bike across the country about 10 years ago. That time, Halvorson’s wife, Lesli, followed along with a camper, acting as a support system. his time, the Schroeders and the Halvorsons (who also have four children, ranging in age from 8 to 14), will be self-supporting. The group will be riding six tandem bicycles and will have bike trailers loaded with camping supplies. The families plan to pedal five to six days a week, with an average daily goal of 50 miles. Sundays will be a day of rest. They anticipate the trip will take 90 days.

Clark said they have four main purposes for doing it.

“One, to strengthen relationships and develop teamwork; two, to develop character through discipleship; three, to plan and accomplish dreams; and four, to share Christ across America,” he said.

The family hasn’t done any specific training for their upcoming adventure. Clark and Annemarie have each

This is the second year South Whidbey’s Poppy Girl honors have gone to Krista, so she knew not to worry about raising money to help veterans. As she approached cars most drivers automatically leaned right to pull out a wallet, or reached right to grab a purse. They were more than willing to help veterans by making a donation for a red paper poppy, fashioned by men and women in the various veterans hospitals around the U.S. “My dad was a vet,” said Sarah BurchWilhelm of Freeland as she handed over some money to Krista and her helper, Dylan Moreno. She smiled at the bright red poppy she received. “I remember these when I was little girl.”

“We’re super-competitive,” said oldest daughter Hannah.

“We’re used to training and we’ve trained for triathlons before, so we’ve gone on long bike rides.” oth Clark and Annemarie are taking a leave of absence from their jobs. Annemarie works at the Hallmark store in town and Clark works for Delex Systems, a defense contractor on base. Their employers have been very supportive they said, and so have the children’s teachers.

“The kids are leaving school a couple of weeks early,” said Annemarie. “The teachers have been very willing to help them finish everything up.”

Spending time together as a family is at the top of all the priority lists, but there are a few worries.

“I worry about the inattentive driver,” Clark said. “We have done everything we possibly could to prepare for this, but you can’t control the people who are driving. So, yeah, safety for the kids is always a big concern.”

According to the Schroeders, there will be interesting conversations along the road as well. Everyone has been assigned different topics to research and bring up for discussion, like servant leadership, for example.

“I’m looking forward to our discussions,” said Clark.

The group will set out from Virginia on May 30 and hope to arrive in Oak Harbor on Aug. 25. Those interested can follow their progress on Facebook/Christ Across America.

The softest of soft sells produces big results for American Legion Post 141’s Poppy Girl and her small troop of willing helpers.

Poppy Girl to arrive. “I’m all for it,” she said enthusiastically. “I’m a member of the American Legion and the Eagles.”

The occupant of the next car in line was just as receptive, as Ann Normile gave money with an understanding smile.

“My husband (retired ferry Captain Pat Normile) was in Vietnam many years ago,” Ann said. She expressed sympathy for today’s military men and women who are sent to Afghanistan for tour after tour, year after year.

The ferry system allowed only two girls at a time on the dock as cars sat and waited for the ferry. Back at poppy headquarters, consisting of a folding table under the sheltered sidewalk near the terminal, walk-on passengers were making poppy donations and buying tabletop American flags.

It was likely the most patriotic-looking table in the state on this particular morning. Poppy Girl Krista and helpers Allie Van Benschoten and Dylan Moreno, both 14, all Langley Middle School students, arrived early to prepare, festooning the table with bunches of poppies, an array of flags, a large wreath made with poppies and flags and a donation jar. They donned poppy aprons, poppy headbands, and

More Memorial Day events: Page 6 switched to ferry safety vests when it was their turn to work the line. Arriving a bit later was Emma Legett, 11, who brought maple bars and soon headed to Mukilteo to work the line on the other side.

The girls were happy to be helping others. “I like helping the community and all the people,” Krista said. The girls mentioned fathers and grandfathers who had been in the service and Krista has personally witnessed heroes in need of help. “I went to the veterans hospital in California,”

she said as she twisted a bunch of poppies together.

Libby McCauley, Poppy Chair for American Legion Post 141, said the poppy money goes to veterans rehabilitation programs. The girls collect approximately $1,200 in donations by spending four hours Saturday and Sunday at the ferry dock, although they were rained out Sunday.

The poppy program is one of many activities the post undertakes to help veterans. The post hosted the recent Veterans Stand-Down and will give $500 scholarships to several deserving high school graduates, for example.

Krista’s job is just beginning as the 2012 Poppy Girl. Saturday she will collect more poppy donations and help decorate the graves of some 500 South Whidbey veterans with flags, and on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, she will participate in services at the Bayview Cemetery, beginning at 11 a.m.

istening to the stories of World War II veterans, it’s no wonder their tales have been told over and over again on the big screen.

When you see photographs like the ones we feature in this month’s issue of the Whidbey Crosswind it’s hard to imagine those are actual events, not scenes from a Hollywood blockbuster.

It is such an honor to speak to these veterans and to hear their experiences.

Hopefully we do them justice.

This month we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Midway.

Harry Ferrier, the remaining survivor of Midway’s aerial battle, will be the guest speaker at a commemoration cer-

emony at 10 a.m. June 4 at the Crescent Harbor Marina boat deck on NAS Whidbey Island’s Seaplane Base.

The event will include students from Oak Harbor High School, an NAS Whidbey Island Color Guard and the base’s commanding officer, Capt. Jay Johnston. A jet flyover and wreath-laying ceremony will conclude the service and a reception will follow in Simard Hall. The public is invited to attend this event.

We don’t have many WWII veterans left. We should pay attention to their stories and pay tribute to their sacrifices. There’s a reason they’re called the “Greatest Generation.”

That’s what first interested retired Navy Cmdr. Harvey Lasell in the sea. Well, perhaps pirates and “The Thief of Baghdad,” the 1924 swashbuckler starring Douglas Fairbanks.

“I liked stories about pirates,” Lasell said, suddenly breaking into several stanzas of a song his uncle sang to him in 1929 or ‘30.

Born in 1915 in Williamstown, Vt., Lasell grew up spending his summers working on a farm. He loved horses, and when he was 6 or 7, his uncle gave him a donkey.

After a couple of years he moved up to a Shetland pony named Beauty. Lasell remembers working at a farm for a year during high school to get his own horse. It is a love of his that has lasted his whole life. Even today he has only to look out the windows of his north Whidbey Island home to see horses grazing in the pasture.

It was in 1935 that the course of Lasell’s life changed. He was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1939. Lasell was the guest speaker at the May 8 meeting of the Association of Naval Aviation and he also sat down with the Whidbey Crosswind to share his story.

“I wanted to fly so I asked to be assigned to the USS Yorktown,” he said. “One of two of my roommates went with me. After six months, there was no question he was the best of those who applied for flight training and got it.”

Lasell’s dream of flight didn’t come to pass, but he found something at which he was fairly adept: he was a good shot. He even won the Secretary of the Navy’s pistol trophy, a feat at which he still shakes his head today.

“Out of 300 items, I usually got about 280 or 290,” he explained. “When I won, the weather was bad and it was hard to see, so I fired 265. That was my lowest score in three years, but it still beat everyone else.”

Lasell was ordered to gunnery where he served as an Ensign and Fire Control Division Officer. His skills as a marksman were soon put to work.

The War Begins Lasell was on leave participating in a fox hunt with his uncle’s riding club when he heard about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He immediately headed back to the Yorktown, which departed Norfolk on Dec. 16, 1941, headed to the Pacific. She arrived in San Diego on Dec. 30.

“Our first mission was to American Samoa,” Lasell recalled. “We left some Marines there. From there we went to the Marshall-Gilberts.”

After returning to Pearl Harbor briefly for replenishment, the Yorktown put to sea on Feb. 14, 1942 on a course to the Coral Sea, where she rendezvoused with Task Force 11 and the USS Lexington.

“We knew the Japanese were planning to set up headquarters in New Guinea and then attack Australia,” said Lasell. “Our job was to intercept them.”

“There was not a lot of hope for the success of this mission,” ANA member Dave Weisbrod explained during the meeting. “In the history of Japan, they hadn’t been

defeated in 440 years.”

Lasell recounted criss-crossing the waters, heading east into the wind then going west, into the heat.

“At one point we got pretty close to the Japanese carriers,” he said. “The planes had flown over us, but they didn’t see us because they had no radar.”

Battle of the Coral Sea On May 3-4, the Japanese invaded Tulagi, in the southeastern Solomon Islands, even though the Yorktown had managed to sink and damage several of the Japanese supporting warships. Because they now knew there were U.S. carriers in the area, Japanese carriers entered the Coral Sea intent on finding and destroying Allied naval forces.

Starting May 7, carrier forces from both sides conducted air strikes for two days. Lasell remembers watching three planes approach the Yorktown (CV-5).

“The three planes circled and we figured they must be ours,” he said.

“They made a landing attempt - they got close, pulled up and circled again. ‘Those aren’t our planes. You’d better let me shoot at ‘em,’ I told them.

“I finally convinced them when I told them our planes don’t have an amber tail light. So, they let me shoot ‘em,” Lasell said matter-of-factly.

The Yorktown managed to successfully dodge eight torpedoes and evaded all but one bomb, which went through the flight deck and exploded below decks. More than 65 sailors were killed or seriously injured.

The Lexington didn’t fare as well. Hit several times, damage control parties were able to bring the fires under control and flight operations continued, despite the damage. However, gasoline vapors below decks ignited, tearing

apart the inside of the vessel. The Lexington was abandoned before being sunk by the USS Phelps.

“We got a bomb hit, but the Lexington got hit and she started blowing up inside,” Lasell described. “But they didn’t lose too many people.”

The Battle of the Coral Sea was the first battle in which aircraft carriers engaged each other, but neither side’s ships fired directly upon each other. Aircraft from both sides were responsible for the damage and both sides suffered heavy losses. The Japanese and U.S. fleets left the area. However, the battle was a strategic win for the U.S., because it was the first time the Allies had been able to turn Japanese forces back and two Japanese Fleet carriers, the Shokaku and Zuikaku, were unable to take part in the Battle of Midway just a month later.

“Stopping Japan at sea was a big deal,” said Weisbrod.

“After this battle, it was downhill for them. It was the beginning of the end.”

The Yorktown headed back to Pearl Harbor for repairs.

The Battle of Midway Damage on board the Yorktown was extensive enough that repairs were estimated to take three months.

Obviously, there wasn’t that much time. Allied Intelligence discovered the Japanese were planning a major operation aimed at a low coral atoll known as Midway.

The Yorktown arrived in Pearl Harbor on May 27, 1942.

Working round the clock on repairs, the carrier was able to put to sea again on May 30.

“We could almost go full speed,” said Lasell. “We’d gone to dry dock, they’d patched the hole, and we went to Midway. We had a scramble there.”

Simple words to describe a battle that changed the course of the war and ultimately ended in the destruction of the Yorktown.

The Yorktown launched a patrol group of 10 Dauntless aircraft at dawn on June 4. They found nothing to the north and returned to the ship. PBYs from Midway, however, saw the Japanese approaching and the alarm was sounded. Yorktown launched its attack group, but the American torpedo planes didn’t fare well in the early stages of the attack. Japanese aircraft attacked the American fleet.

“They were flying in formation,” Lasell said. “I saw two

planes, but they were in line with a destroyer. I didn’t want to fire at them and accidentally hit our destroyer.”

The first hit to the Yorktown was on the starboard side, near the number two elevator. A second hit on the port side and third on the starboard side slowed the Yorktown to an eventual stop.

An hour later she was ready to go again and began refueling its fighters. But there were more Japanese fighters incoming, according to the ship’s radar. The Yorktown was able to avoid a minimum of two torpedoes before she was struck twice more on the port side.

“The ship had listed 20 to 25 degrees. The captain ordered the ship abandoned,” said Lasell. “Hell, she wouldn’t have capsized.”

Following orders, Lasell abandoned ship.

“I’d been wounded and I’d given my life jacket away,” he said. “I took one off a dead Marine. I had my 45 in my shirt - I was going to save that.”

Lasell described going over the side of the ship, and swimming towards the nearest destroyer. Once hauled

aboard, he sent his gun away to be dried off. And, his instincts were right - the Yorktown never capsized.

“Two days after the Yorktown was abandoned, still afloat, a salvage crew had prepared her for towing,” he said. “The Destroyer Hammann (DD-412) was alongside providing electric power for the salvage.

“A Japanese sub fired torpedoes from six miles away, one of which hit the destroyer,” Lasell continued. “The destroyer sank and her depth charges went off at 35 feet. Those depth charges put a hole in the Yorktown, which was probably the cause of her sinking.”

Life after Midway After his experiences on the Yorktown, Lasell went on to serve as the assistant gunnery officer on board the USS Essex (CV-9) and as the gunnery officer on the USS Randolph (CV-15). After retiring from the Navy, he went on to work at Boeing. He retired from Boeing in 1982. He and his late wife Elizabeth had five children.

VA home loan program turns veterans’ dreams of home ownership into reality

lex and Collin Horn purchased their first home two years ago, with a little help from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Alex, a Navy pilot, heard about the VA home loan guaranty program and he and his wife decided to take advantage of it to buy a home in Oak Harbor.

Collin said not having to make a down payment was a big draw to the VA home loan program.

On existing homes one year of age or older, the VA offers a $3,000 energy improvement upgrade with no additional qualifying of the borrower and the appraisal does not need to support the $3,000 in energy improvements. This is not a second mortgage. It’s part of a new purchase or refinance loan. The improvements can include anything that saves money on utilities: insulation, new energy effi-

cient appliances, new tankless water heater (or some other efficient system), etc.

With some conditions, there is also a secondary level, which goes from $3,001 to $6,000. Like the lower amount option, the value of the improvements do not need to be justified on the appraisal. The lender must, however, ensure the energy savings will more than pay for the cost of the improvements.

The documentation can come from the manufacturer, the local utility or a professional energy rater.

With the VA energy improvement program, energy improvements can exceed $6,000 but the appraisal must support the improvements and again, the monthly cost of the improvements must be offset by the estimated energy savings.

Adding energy improvements to your VA loan (purchase or refinance) is a nobrainer. The benefits include

hether you’re looking for a destination drive or just a pretty route to take to Bellingham, Chuckanut Drive is certainly a beauty.

There’s plenty to see as the curving road hugs the Chuckanut Mountains and winds its way along Samish and Bellingham bays. There are countless scenic vistas on which to feast your eyes, whether you’re in or out of your vehicle. Designated pulloffs make it easy to stop to admire the view or to park and hike, or you can follow the lead of other nature lovers and find a wide shoulder to park on.

A word to the wise, get an early start if you’re looking to spend a few hours — the roadside spots fill up quickly on beautiful Pacific Northwest days.

Chuckanut Drive

21 Twisty, Turny, Terrific Miles

Opened in the spring of 1916, Chuckanut Drive had been around long before, albeit in a more rugged form. (Prior to the late 1890s, the only way from Bellingham to Mount Vernon or Seattle was by boat.) A very primitive road, or trail, had existed since the 1860s, the only thoroughfare between Fairhaven (now part of Bellingham) and Blanchard (approximately three miles northeast of Edison). The route became a rough logging road in the 1890s.

The state highway department eventually took over the project, completing it in 1916. It was already known as Chuckanut Drive, although it technically became U.S. Route 99 in 1926; U.S. Route 99 Alternate in 1931; and State Route 11 in 1964, a Washington State Scenic Byway.

Getting there’s half the fun

Depending on where you’re coming from, there are a few different routes to take to get to Chuckanut Drive.

The fastest, and probably the most utilitarian route, is to follow Interstate 5 to Exit 231 north of Burlington. The road will take drivers through about eight miles of Skagit Valley farmland before it starts to rise and follow the mountains.

However, anyone coming from Whidbey Island has a choice of two different routes that will both end in roughly the same place. Following Highway 20 east toward Burlington, the first option is to follow Bay View-Edison Road. The road meanders through the countryside, passing Bay View State Park, the Breazeale Interpretive Center and the Padilla Bay Shore Trail, any of which are a tempting spot for a picnic. Following the road will bring you to a “T” - go left to explore Samish Island, which is primarily residential but does offer wonderful views of Samish and Padilla bays. Take a right and follow the road to the historic town of Edison, established in 1869.

Railroad service came to the area in 1893, connecting Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia by rail at least. Today the tracks still follow the shores of Samish and Bellingham Bays, about 200 feet below Chuckanut Drive.

The second option from Highway 20 is to turn north on Farm to Market Road. It’s a faster, straighter shot to Edison, but still offers that country drive feeling as you enjoy miles of scenic farmland. You will pass several farms and dairies along the way.

The state legislature allocated funds for improving the road from Bellingham to Bow in 1905, but the funding ran out and only a few miles were completed.

Edison

In 1907, Charles Larrabee, a wealthy Bellingham resident, and his business partner, Cyrus Gates, obtained funding to build the section of the road that ends in Fairhaven. In 1910, convicts were used to pave the southern end of the road, but only about five and half miles were completed.

Either of the options from Highway 20 will lead you to the town of Edison. But many who take the I-5 route will also hop off Chuckanut Drive to take the one mile detour to explore this little community, most famously known as the home of journalist Edward R. Murrow. Here one will find no shortage of eclectic eateries, shops and galleries.

“Edison has become quite a destination for people looking to eat and get off the beaten path,” said Jim Kowalski, owner of Farm to Market Bakery, known for its homemade soups and baked sandwiches, not to mention the bakery’s signature item, lime-soaked polenta cakes.

“Edison was probably here before Chuckanut Drive, but being right off a designated scenic byway surely helps,” said Kowalski. Farm to Market Bakery is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A word to the wise: The sticky buns and cinnamon rolls are huge and they don’t take credit cards.

“I think it’s a combination of its proximity to Chuckanut Drive and just the fact it’s a good thoroughfare, being the back road between Bellingham and Anacortes,” said Edison Cafe owner Lisa Ash of Edison’s blooming popularity.

“The variety of people is great. I’ve had people in here from Denmark, Paris, Germany, and then I have people from La Conner,” she said.

Edison Cafe has been in business since 1939. Ash bought it in 2007. She said the cafe’s specialty is all-day breakfast, and Bistro Night every Wednesday during the summer from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Regular hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Points of interest

You don’t have to go out of the way to find the Rhododendron Cafe, which is at the corner of Bow Hill Road and Chuckanut Drive. In business for 28 years, the cafe specializes in helping customers travel the globe — culinary-style. Each month focuses on cuisine from a different region, and each week features different ethnic meals from that region. Customers can get a passport from the cafe and have fun tracking their way through a taste-tour of the world.

As you approach the base of the Chuckanut Mountains and just as the road begins its climb, you’ll find the small community of Blanchard, founded in 1887. The town boasts one of the oldest wooden train stations in the state that is still in use. Hang gliding off Blanchard Mountain is popular and it’s easy to catch a glimpse of people enjoying the sport.

There are three well-established restaurants within just a few miles as you head past Blanchard. Chuckanut Manor, which was started in 1963 by retired Navy Chief john Harold Paulson, is followed fairly

closely by the Oyster Bar and Oyster Creek Inn. Taylor Shellfish farms is immediately past Oyster Creek Inn.

to keep traveling from show to show and picked the spot along Chuckanut Drive to open his gallery 25 years ago.

As the names may suggest, local shellfish is a hot item on the menu.

“I wanted to see if I could do a gallery and make it go,” he said as he planted flowers on a sunny Sunday afternoon in the gallery’s garden. “It’s a nicer way to sell my work.”

“All our oysters come out of the bay, but our menu changes quite a bit,” said Chuckanut Manor owner Pat Woolcock.

And don’t think the scenery is limited merely to the views visible from the hiking trail or the highway.

“Chuckanut Drive is a scenic, wonderful drive,” Woolcock said. “But I think the view we offer here of the sunsets are absolutely beautiful.”

The restaurant opens at 10:30 a.m.

Tuesday through Friday, and on Sundays, and opens at 8 a.m. on Saturdays.

As you head past Taylor Shellfish Farm on the twisting, turning road, there are plenty of picnic spots available to pull over and enjoy. Depending on the season, you can come across small waterfalls and there are hiking trails galore to explore along the way.

Larrabee State Park

A big draw to the area is Larrabee State Park. Originally established in 1915, it was a 20-acre site called Chuckanut State Park, and was the first state park in Washington.

The name was changed to Larrabee State Park by the State Parks Committee in honor of Charles Larrabee, who donated the original land. Over the years the park has grown to more than 2, 680 acres and features eight miles of hiking trails, beach, camping, picnicking, playground, amphitheater and a boat launch.

Clayton Beach day use area is part of Larrabee State park. The dirt trail to the beach is located across the road from the parking area and is steep at some points.

There are no restrooms, tables or trash cans on the beach, so try to travel lightly and remember to pack out everything you brought with you. The beach is open from 6:30 a.m. to dusk.

Almost done

As you head north, you know you’re nearing the end of the drive when you see Chuckanut Bay Gallery and Garden Shop, owned by Army veteran and well-known Northwest potter Don Salisbury.

The shop features a variety of work by Northwest artists and craftspeople, paintings and limited edition prints, woodworking, hand blown glass, contemporary jewelry and unique yard and garden accessories.

The gallery is just a few blocks away from the end of Chuckanut Drive, bringing you into the Fairhaven district of Bellingham, which many find is worth a trip all by itself.

The six square blocks that make up the Fairhaven district feature distinctive redbrick buildings that are home to restaurants, art galleries, book stores, antique shops and much more. The Victorian-style architecture speaks of a colorful past — stories of which include a former rum-runner

and 1880s developer named “Dirty Dan.” The lumber boom in the 1890s and demand for coal and fish helped Fairhaven bustle with hotels, taverns, restaurants and brothels. But when an expected railroad terminus wound up crossing the mountains further south, the boom went bust.

Today Fairhaven bustles with activity again. It is a popular residential area and is also Bellingham’s transportation hub, featuring the Bellingham Cruise Terminal and Fairhaven Station for Amtrak and Greyhound. The Alaska Ferry leaves from the cruise terminal each week and whale watching and chartered cruises leave for the San Juan Islands daily during the summer.

There you have it — whether you want to get back to nature, enjoy a picnic, try a new restaurant or do a little shopping, give Chuckanut Drive a try. It’s 21 miles of twisty, turny, terrific.

VRC opens new office After months with no official public location, the flag is finally flying over the Veterans Resource Center in Freeland once more.

Thanks to an in-kind donation, the VRC was able to secure office space and has opened its new community information center. New VRC executive director Fred McCarthy, VRC founders Judith Gorman and Perry McClellan and volunteer Greg Dalrymple watched happily as Gunnar Loveng, with Puget Sound Energy, attached the VRC’s logo to a billboard at Highway 525 and Scott Road.

The information center, located next to Scotty’s Local Farm to Market Store, will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mondays and Tuesdays. Organizers hope to expand those hours as volunteer staffing is available. Appointments are also available.

Gorman and McCarthy stress that the VRC will continue its collaboration with the American Legion and other veterans organizations on Whidbey Island as it seeks to become an informational clearinghouse for Whidbey Island veterans.

On Base Garudas Come home for Memorial day After being deployed nearly six months on the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70), members of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 134 are back on the rock.

The Garudas returned to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in two parts — the squadron’s four EA-6B Prowlers flew in May 22, while the remaining 175 aircrew returned May 23.

VQ-2 Rangers SAY GOODBYE It is the end of a 57-year era. In a ceremony in Hangar 6 on board Naval Air Station Whidbey Island May 17, Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron (VQ) 2 was officially “disestablished.”

“But its spirit can remain with us as long as the sun shines and the wind blows. VQ-2 will not be just history, but a legacy.”

“Look at this as an opportunity,” said Cmdr. Stockfish. “In a few minutes, memories will be all we have of VQ-2. Remember the past, but do not live in it. The Ranger spirit will lead you to success.”

After reading the orders, which stated VQ-2 will officially be terminated as of Aug. 31 and its personnel consolidated into VQ-1, tradition took over. The bell was struck eight times and the squadron’s pennant was retired.

“This is a sad day, but we will move forward,” Stockfish said. “Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron 2, dismissed.”

Cancer treatment for dogs also helping people

By: J.M. Kiel, DVM A diagnosis of cancer is something no one wants to hear.

For years mice have been the primary research tool for trying to understand the processes of cancer, including the genetics of how a disease develops. They are also invaluable in establishing the initial safety of cancer treatment drugs. But mice do not make good predictors of how a drug or treatment protocol will actually work in people.

This is where dogs can play an important role in seeing which experimental cancer treatments have the best hope of being effective for people. In people, it can take years to evaluate whether one treatment protocol is more effective than another. Because of the shorter lifespan of dogs and the faster rate at which their cancers develop and progress, a treatment protocol can be completed in 6 to 18 months.

One example of this cross-species partnership is a study of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in dogs done by Texas A&M University’s veterinary college and the University of Texas

M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. In chemotherapy, drugs are used to kill cancer cells.

Unfortunately, they also can kill the T-cells, the cells of our immune system needed for our immune response. In the Texas study, T-cells were harvested from dogs with NHL before their chemotherapy. These cells were then grown outside of the dog and later reinserted after the chemotherapy treatments were finished. Using this technique, the researchers were able to increase the dogs’ tumor-free survival time by nine months. In a human life, that could equate to seven years.

One of the obstacles to advancing this type of research has always been the lack of infrastructure to pair cancer researchers and animal patients. The Texas Veterinary Cancer Registry was started last fall to help remedy that problem. Owners of dogs and cats diagnosed with cancer are being asked to register their pet at http://texasvetcancerregistry.com. The registry had its first success last November, an 8-yearold Great Pyrenees named Rowdy with osteosarcoma. This is the sixth most common form of childhood cancer. One in three children

diagnosed with the disease dies from it. Instead of the standard treatment, amputation, Rowdy got an experimental procedure – radiation injected into 22 tiny holes drilled directly into the bone cancer. After two months Rowdy was running around symptom-free.

We fear most that which we do not know.

And while we have learned much about how to diagnose and treat cancer, there is still so much more to know. The interest in using dogs to help treat cancer in people will continue to increase. In addition to the work described above, the National Cancer Institute is planning to launch three clinical trials this year in dogs with osteosarcoma, melanoma and angiosarcoma. The benefits to people are obvious, but the research will also help veterinarians to better treat cancer in pets using techniques that would have been otherwise financially impossible to develop.

There are 77.5 million dogs in the U.S. and one-fourth of them will develop cancer. Many of these are the same cancers that people get including: Osteosarcoma, a bone cancer Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a blood cancer Prostate carcinoma Glioma, a brain cancer Melanoma, a skin cancer Angiosarcoma, a blood vessel cancer Mammary carcinoma
