Explore Snoqualmie’s Stillwater Bog A ten-minute stroll can go send you hundreds of years back in time at the Stillwater Bog nature preserve.

Nestled inside trees at Community Park on Snoqualmie Ridge, out of sight of traffic, homes and businesses, the bog is a place where families can walk, see birds and other animals, and learn about the natural history of the wetland.

On the trail The fast-growing city of Snoqualmie grew on the Ridge with the idea of connectivity—of residents being able to walk, jog or bike to jobs, shopping, entertainment or neighbors. Thanks to that focus, Snoqualmie Ridge includes some 20 miles of hiking trails, connecting neighborhoods to all parts of the city as well as the King County Snoqualmie-Preston Trail.

Runners and hikers can find trails in Snoqualmie that meet their needs or pose a challenge. On the Ridge trails, there are flat areas, gentle slopes and a few steep areas.

Wildlife abound in the greenbelts near trails in Snoqualmie. On Silent Creek trail near Stellar Park, walkers may feel like they’re in the forest.

Mini-parks Snoqualmie Ridge also features 16 mini-parks, small neighborhood parks with benches, fountains, reading areas or decorative stones. For visitors or families hosting visitors, the Ridge’s parks make good places to try a picnic or stroll. From views to plants, fountains or sculptures, you’ll get a different experience at each park.

Summer fun Snoqualmie Ridge hosts a number of unique sporting events catering to runners and golfers.

In August, the Ridge hosts the Boeing Classic PGA tournament, with some of the world’s best golfers competing on the Jack Nicklaus-designed course. Learn more or buy tickets at www.boeingclassic.com/.

isitors to Valley attractions from Seattle and the Eastside often enter Snoqualmie by way of Interstate 90’s Exit 25.

Following the Snoqualmie Parkway down to Snoqualmie Falls and the Northwest Railway Museum may be quick, but the visitor won’t want to miss several attractions on Snoqualmie Ridge itself.

For the day-tripper, Snoqualmie Ridge offers a number of shopping destinations and some unique picnicking and hiking attractions for the family.

Above and below ground, great changes are happening at 270-foot Snoqualmie Falls. A small piece of the original weir can still be seen at the falls crest—it’s a slab of concrete faced with timber in the river’s center.

The 270-foot plume of Snoquamie Falls is the Valley’s most popular scenic attraction, drawing more than a million visitors a years.

Just off Highway 202 near downtown Snoqualmie, the two-acre Snoqualmie Falls Park invites visitors with its paved trails, garden-like grounds, multiple observation areas and a gift shop.

Next door is the famed Salish Lodge and Spa, with luxury rooms, spa amenities and two restaurants overlooking the mighty cataract.

Craziest races Adventurous runners go through mud and fire in Warrior Dash, Hell Run, Survivor Run

They come as rodeo clowns, spacemen, cavewomen, comic book heroes. They leave, to a man and woman, dirty, tired, but extremely satisfied.

Adventure footraces in the Snoqualmie Valley are becoming extremely popular. North Bend’s second Warrior Dash, set for July 21 and 22, 2012, at Meadowbrook Farm, and Carnation’s Hell Run and Survivor Mud Runs challenge racers in fun, creative and messy ways.

The Warrior Dash has participants climbing, racing, leaping and crawling, all in muggy, muddy conditions. At the final stretch, they jump over burning charcoal, then dive into calf-deep mud. No one leaves clean. Cost is $55-$75. Learn more at www.warriordash.com.

Carnation’s Remlinger Farms will again host two 5K runs this year, following the popular trend of muddy, wet, obstacle courses, with victory parties to follow.

The first is the Survivor Mud Run, Saturday, June 2. This event is, according to the website, “3.47 hellish miles” of mud and obstacles, climbs and drops, plus a mystery challenge near the end of the course. Nearly 4,000 people are expected for the event, which will take place on non-sensitive areas of the farm. The deadline for registration is 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 22. The second event, called Hell Run, is Saturday, Sept. 15, also at the farm. The 3.15-mile course features 12 obstacles, and a victory party featuring Tone Loc. Participants receive a Hell Run T-shirt and superhero cape.

Feast from the farm

arket season is here, and a bounty of locally grown fruits, vegetables and flowers will be on display weekly in the Upper and Lower Valley for families to enjoy.

The ninth annual Carnation Farmers Market opened Tuesday, May 1, with its traditional maypole dance, and great anticipation for the future.

With a new market manager, Melissa Borsting, and a new permanent shelter for some of the 20 or so vendors who participate each Tuesday, market visitors can look forward to an extended season this year, through November 20.

Carnation’s market is food-and-farm only, so vendors can sell only the products they’ve grown themselves or made from what they’ve grown.

Crafts won’t be on sale, but prepared food will be, so people could come to the market for a lot of their needs, one night a week. This fits Borsting’s vision for the market.

“Families can come and pick up some groceries, get dinner, and maybe enjoy a show,” she said.

Market activities include live music each week featuring local musicians, a children’s booth featuring activities led by local YMCA or school representatives, a wellness program, the ever-popular chalk art, and a booth highlighting a different non-profit organization each week.

Carnation Farmers Market is located in downtown Carnation, one block east of Highway 203/Tolt Avenue on Bird Street. Market hours are 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, through Nov. 20.

orth Bend’s market is set to open Thursday, June 14, with a slightly different look this year.

“Everything is getting shifted to the front of the building for this summer only,” said Minna Rudd, the market coordinator for Si View Metropolitan Park District, which hosts the annual market.

A planned construction project is affecting the market’s usual site, behind the park district building, 400 S.E. Orchard Dr., so the market will adapt this year. The musicians’ stage will be smaller this year, but Rudd assures readers “I have plenty of space for vendors.”

The North Bend Farmers Market features local farmers as well as local artists and crafters in its weekly event, averaging about 25 vendors each week. There’s typically an equal mix of farm products, prepared food items, ready-to-consume foods, and crafts on sale, Rudd said, and the crafts tend to vary each week.

“Most art vendors are not here every week of the summer, and that way, we get more variety,” she said, but noted she has had to limit the number of booths offered to these vendors. “There are a lot of talented artists in the Valley!”

That’s true musically, as well. The market has live music each week, from about 6 to 7:30 p.m., but the biggest draw, Rudd said, is the setting.

“We have the mountain as a backdrop, we have the big open park, and we’re also pet-friendly,” she said.

Rail revival Weekends in Snoqualmie will send you back in time more than a century, when you stop at the Northwest Railway Museum. A historic depot (38625 S.E. King St.), walking trail, five-plus miles of track, and the working railroad make up the museum, which makes Snoqualmie the same tourism destination that it was 120 years ago.

“Tourists were coming from Seattle—it took all day to get here on the train, or a good part of the day—but they were coming out here to see the sights,” said museum marketing manager Sue Van Gerpen.

Snoqualmie Falls is one of the main attractions, and the museum’s train brings visitors to the sight about once an hour, from April through October. In June, it will also bring them to the museum’s Railway History Center, on Stone Quarry Road, for tours by appointment. The center is home to many of the museum’s train cars, including the chapel car that travelled the region to host wed-

dings years ago. The car is being restored, and should be done soon.

“It’s awe-inspiring,” said Van Gerpen.

Museum visitors can see many of the cars up close, as they walk along the trail north of the depot, but it’s the experience of riding the train that excites most people.

“This is a really great place for families to come and be together and have fun,” Van Gerpen said, especially at birthday parties. “The parents want to ride the train more than the kids do,” she said.

Train excursions tour Snoqualmie, North Bend, and the Falls every 70 minutes, and riders can board in either city.

On a recent Friday morning, sitting in her office, Van Gerpen gestures around the spacious, high-ceilinged depot that is her office.

“This is the original ticket office. People will be coming up to that window tomorrow, just like they have been for 122 years. That gives me chills. I just love that.”

The museum draws about 90,000 visitors annually.

“So then as now, tourism is what it’s all about,” said Van Gerpen, “and cultural tourism is huge. That’s what we’re about, as well as family fun.”

100-year party The name has changed a few times in the last century, but the closeness of community and good, old-fashioned small-town spirit in Carnation remains a fixture to this day.

Carnation, formerly Tolt, Grand Rapids and Tolt again, marks its 100th year of incorporation this year, with a series of community events beginning, (when else?) on the day of the city’s patriotic spectacular, the Great Carnation 4th of July Celebration.

This year’s Independence Day event has a centennial theme, to honor the city’s founding families and past leaders. The Tolt Historical Society float, with large photos of the earliest Tolt residents, will lead the parade, followed by a procession of the city’s past mayors. Isabel Jones, a

dedicated member of the historical society, will be the parade Grand Marshall.

Carnation City Councilwoman and former Mayor Lee Grumman has led the planning for the centennial events.

She hopes to engage all of the community with one or more of the special events coming up – and “we’re fundraising!” she adds.

Residents can contribute to the events by buying a stone paver.
