Lopez had several overall first place finishes: Senior Jamie Cummins won both the 800-meter run and 100meter hurdles, and Senior Marina Steinbrueck won the shot put and took second in the discus, edged out by only two inches. Junior Solomon Bill continued his domination in the distance events, winning both the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs. Other outstanding performances included Ninth Grader Brianne Swanson, who tied for first overall in the 100-meter dash, and took first in 1B and was second overall in the 200meter dash.

outdoors: ‘Go Take A Hike’ –

Mt. Constitution loop hike, We will car pool from the Lopez ferry dock. Ferry leaves at 6:55 a.m. and returns at 3:35 p.m. This is a sweet hike on great trails that begins next to cascade falls in Moran State Park. From here we head up a little gully stream toward Mountain Lake and the east shore trail. Just past the north end of Mountain Lake we are presented with the smaller Twin Lakes. Then it is up up to the top and the stone tower built by the CCC in the 1930s.

The best return is by the south trail with great views much of the way. This is about an eight mile hike with 1,700 feet of elevation gain. You must sign up in advance with leader Bob Walker at 468-3397.

There are safe ways to use this important technology, that don’t degrade our property values or our health. We need our leaders to make wise, informed decisions in this critical area.

Birthday Club: Celebrating 90 years of service and fun

Possibly the oldest club on Lopez Island, The Birthday Club, will be celebrating its 90th anniversary May 17, 2 p.m. at Woodmen Hall, (previously scheduled for May 18 note the change) with hostesses dressed in skirts or dresses with old-fashioned hats apropos of the attire worn by members of past generations. Edna Leidig, who plays the piano will be playing some rollicking old

tunes and members who are so inclined can sing or hum along.

The club was formed as a philanthropic crafters group, making handmade gifts for birthdays and Christmas as well as making Thanksgiving baskets for those in need. During the Great Depression when times were tough on Lopez, members were a great help to the community by providing layettes and supplies for new parents. Although the club is not a major fundraising organization,

dues are now contributed to scholarships, memorial funds and other causes.

Many members became acquainted with The Birthday Club at a young age because their mothers and grandmothers were members. They and their mothers and grandmothers are the women who farmed, fished, raised food and families, helped others, and attended quilting bees and church and potlucks, and weathered storms and change.

The first meeting of

The Birthday Club was held at the home of Mrs. John Tralnes at Mackaye Harbor in June of 1922 on her fiftieth birthday. The current president is her granddaughter Sister Judy Tralnes.

Members of the club are, for the most part, in their “prime,” as Miss Jean Brodie would have said.

They are mature women, certain of their past, certain of their place in the world and their ability to do what needs to be done.

They are the women who

smooth the flow of daily life and who carry on the tradition of helping their neighbors and community.

At each meeting of the Birthday Club, members whose birthdays fall in that month must pay dues in the amount of one penny for each year they are celebrating, dropping coins into “the policeman,” a tin bank as old as the club. These are women who are proud to proclaim their years on this earth. Further funds are collected by donating small amounts in answer

to creative questions. An example would be: Put a quarter in the basket for every note to yourself you have in your purse.

Monthly meetings of the Birthday Club are held on the third Friday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at Woodmen Hall.

Prospective members are welcome to join in the fun and enjoy a scrumptious dessert.

Garden Club’s Plant Sale – come rain or shine The Annual Lopez Island Garden Club’s highly anticipated Plant Sale is Thursday, May 10, 10 a.m.-noon at Woodmen Hall. Past years have had the lines forming early, rain or shine, and gardeners bursting through the doors, right at 10, racing to get their first choices from the wonderful plants donated by other gardeners from all over the island. The selection of plants this year includes trees, shrubs, perennials, groundcovers, veggie and berry starts, and a variety of native species.

New this year to the Plant Sale there will be a Silent Auction where shoppers can make bids on an amazing selection of plants donated by local businesses and nurseries, including Azusa Farm and Gardens, Bakerview Nursery, Boxwood Farm, Christianson’s Nursery, D Street Nursery, Contributed photo Pelindaba Lavender Farm, The selection of plants this year includes trees, Mitchell Bay Farm and Nursery, shrubs, perennials, groundcovers, veggie and Sunset Builder’s Nursery, T & D berry starts, and a variety of native species.

Also new this year, in addition to plants for sale, there will be a used Garden Books section and Botanical Art and cards by local artists Daphne Morris, Kate Scott, Linda Ann Vorobik and Anne Whirledge Karp.

Funds raised by the Plant Sale are used by the Garden Club to finance their yearly scholarship awarded to a graduating Lopez High School senior and to award stipends to guest speakers that give presentations at the Garden Club Meetings. There are now over 70 members of the Garden Club that meet monthly, September through June, on the second Thursday of the month at Woodman Hall, from 9:30- 11:30am.

Every other year the Garden Club also sponsors the Lopez Garden Tour.

Put on your gardening gloves and join the fun this year at the Plant Sale on May 10.

LCNT’s survey and future events The Lopez Community Trails Network is conducting a survey of Lopez Island residents and property owners of all ages to determine where and how to build trails for walking, biking and riding. The sur vey is available at LopezTrails.org and on paper at the library or by calling 468-2474.

LCTN provides residents and guests with wonderful, beautiful, safe pathways throughout our fabulous island so we can share its beauty.

We are working to connect Lopez locations such as the Ferry and the Village, the School to areas where students live, parks with other parks and the Village, and walkways within the Village. Just imagine walking out your door to a nearby trail, and then walking or riding anywhere on the island safely, away from traffic, on a scenic pathway.

LCTN’s mission is “to facilitate and participate actively in the creation, use, and maintenance of a network of safe, non-

motorized trails on Lopez Island to benefit community members of all ages for active transportation, recreation, health, wellbeing and quality of life.” The survey will aid greatly in implementing that vision.

LCTN will use responses from the survey and work with residents, land owners, the county, the School District and agencies such as Parks, the Land Trust, and the Preservation Trust to develop a plan for trails throughout Lopez Island.

Meanwhile, LCTN is actively promoting trail building and use. June 2 is National Trails Day and LCTN is once again planning a major event.

Activities will include one trail building project involving anyone who wants to help, as well as at least two hikes on established trails on Lopez. There will be a barbecue/potluck. Come help build the trails of the future, meet the members and share your views. LCTN will also have a table at the Farmer’s Market at least once a month this year. Please stop by.

Athletic Booster Club kicks off new fundraising tradition program to run short or to be downsized. One of the main goals of “The Pack” is to help the Lobos with everything from new uniforms and equipment to a new scoreboard.

The group has also been promoting Lobo pride and spirit throughout the school and the community, something they hope the dinner will help them do.

“We’d love to have lots of folks attend the event, even if they don’t have students enrolled at Lopez High School. In fact, it’s those people that we’d really encourage to attend,” said Brant. “We’d like them to have the opportunity to meet some of the amazing student athletes that so proudly represent our island community each time they take the field,

Mark Salman to play at Lopez Center

Lopez Center presents the 2012 Henderson Steinway Piano Series which opens Saturday, May 19 at 7 p.m. featuring worldfamous pianist Mark Salman.

He will be playing music by Franz Liszt in celebration of the composer’s 200th birthday.

Salman will be joined on stage

by Middle School performers Gavin Goodrich and Lia Pryce.

“In homage to Liszt’s efforts to disseminate music throughout Europe through his extensive concert tours, Mr. Salman seeks to perform in small to medium sized communities where audiences rarely have the opportunity to hear the great solo piano repertoire in live recital,” said Series Steering Committee Member Phyllis Nansen. “To draw attention to Liszt’s own charitable works, Mr. Salman dedicates part of his concert fees to local causes or charities.”

He has selected the Lopez Island Family Resource Center to benefit from this donation-only concert.

Salman, a graduate of the Juilliard School, has performed at Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall. His concert tours have taken him to Europe, Asia, Canada and throughout the United States.

The Steinway piano, which the upcoming performers will play on, was bequeathed to the Lopez community by the Lucile Henderson estate in 2007. Individuals listed on the Henderson Memorial Piano

soundboard who also owned a 1911 vintage Model O Steinway include His Majesty Nicholas II, Czar of Russia, Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, the Sultan of Turkey, Abulhamid II and other royalty from ten countries.

Goodrich will play a Mozart Sonata in C Major K 545, the first theme and development.

“He plays so fast I feel like the keys are going to start smoking,” said Becky Johnson of her student Goodrich, a sixth grader who has studied with her for nearly three years. “He caught fire with classical music, printing out the music and studying the biographies of the composers.”

Eighth grader Lia Pryce, age 14 has studied piano for seven years. She will perform a Chopin nocturne, Opus 9, No 2. Her teacher is Marge Strensrud.

A special sale and silent auction will be held Saturday, May 12 at The Gathering Place on Lopez Island. The sale will consist of drawings, sketches, studies and some paintings from the estate of Lopez artist and long-time resident, Hildegarde Goss. Her paintings are known for the use of vibrant colors, a naïve style and joy.

He is Marlys and Lynn Wallers’ son-in-law.

Rounding out the series on September 22 is three-time Latin Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto, a master pianist, composer and arranger, who is among the top Brazilian musicians on stage today. This concert is entitled Piano Mania.

Continuing a long history of working with Seattle-Northwest Securities, the district successfully sold the bonds to pay off a loan secured in 2009 for the purpose of an emergency replacement of a fire suppressant sprinkler system in the elementary school and additional work on an HVAC system.

The low overall interest rate of 2.44 percent is directly attributable to the strong rating, favorable market conditions, and other positive factors presented to potential buyers. “We are very appreciative of the support and the commitment to our schools and our students that our Lopez community consistently demonstrates. The continued support of state small high school funding and the district’s conser vative budgeting are factors in the district’s healthy overall budget, so that reductions in force are not necessary this year.

The entire staff took a pay decrease mandated by the state for public employees for school year 2011-12, and unlike many other districts, did not ask the district to spend other funds to make up the difference. “This act of sacrifice and teamwork has helped the district maintain an overall budget that is able to support the retention of the current level of teaching staff for this coming school year,� said Superintendent Bill Evans. “We are grateful for their selflessness.�

In compliance with collective bargaining agreements and state regulations,
