What’s next? City must tackle eroding roads Officials look for ways to treat worn streets in wake of bond defeat By ROBERT WHALE rwhale@auburn-reporter.com
As most people know by now, Auburn’s $59 million road bond went down in last week’s special election, barely reaching a simple majority when it needed a 60-per-
cent super majority. In the combined results of King and Pierce counties, the measure garnered 50.27 percent yes to 49.73 percent no as of April 22. In the Lakeland Hills area of Auburn, however, the bond picked up 61 percent.
Political types will no doubt rake the results and scratch their heads to figure out the hows and the whys and what lessons they can learn from it all. But apart from the political side, there are cold facts on the ground. Auburn’s roads and
streets, like everything else on the planet, are aging — and there is still no grant money, and no dollars from the county, state or federal government to deal with that problem. On Tuesday, Mayor Pete Lewis sat down with his engineering and public works staff to consider what steps the City could take to
extend the life of the streets out as long as possible. Here are some of the highlights of that meeting. 1. The mayor has authorized the City’s public works and engineering staff to begin chip sealing arterials. Chip sealing calls for laying down an oil mat, dropping [ more ROADS page 4 ]

Tensions have ratcheted up between Pacific’s unpopular mayor and its frustrated City Council. In the latest twist to this ongoing drama, the seven-member council and the City police employees union officially gave Mayor Cy Sun a vote of no confidence at a heated City Council Sun meeting Monday night. “Your unprofessional demeanor, outbursts, slanders of citizens, organizations, business owners, other city representatives and council members as a top representative for the
City has been an embarrassment,” Mayor Pro Tem John Jones read from the motion’s statement. “Your ill-mannered, uncivil, demanding, intimidating demeanor has created a hostile workplace for City employees.” The council unanimously passed the motion of non-confidence, 7-0. Angered at times, Sun stood silent as he heard the claims. Later, as the council was finishing its business, he quietly left the meeting. “The whole council is against me,” a disgusted Sun said as he left his chair. [ more SUN page 4 ]
Mountainview senior came out tops in the organization's design contest. Williams and his design (shown left) were recognized at a spirit assembly at Auburn Mountainview last Friday, with Williams coming away with a certificate, a $100 gift card and the honor of knowing his design will grace everything the AVCA puts out, from posters to postcards.
