Retired deputy pulls firearm, thwarts assault at Walmart

A family affair

The efforts of a retired but armed Island County Sheriff’s deputy prevented an assault with a broken wine bottle and knife from becoming something much worse.

At approximately 2:40 p.m. Thursday, Oak Harbor police officers responded to a call at Walmart of a man trying to stab another man.

It turned out to be a struggle between a security guard and a suspected shoplifter.

The suspect, 21-year-old Addison Vernon, allegedly filled a backpack with clothing and a bottle of wine and then left the large discount department store, said Lt. Tim Sterkel of the Oak Harbor Police Department.

A Walmart security guard managed to get Vernon into the foyer, but then he struggled to break away, Sterkel said, adding that Vernon had a wine bottle in his hands.

The two struggled and ended up on the ground where the bottle broke.

Sterkel said Vernon grabbed the broken bottle and attempted to stab at the security guard’s face.

The guard grabbed Vernon’s hands to prevent him from slashing and the two continued to struggle

until the alleged shoplifter unsheathed his knife.

Sterkel said the guard managed to push the man away, but Vernon still had the knife and was confronting the guard.

At that time Wayne Lewis, a retired Island County Sheriff’s deputy, saw what was happening and pulled a handgun.

Vernon sheathed his knife and ran away heading east from Walmart’s main entrance.

Eventually, deputies caught up with Vernon near the intersection of Fleet Street and Barrington Drive up the hill from Walmart and arrested him.

Vernon had $178 worth of Walmart merchandise with him, Sterkel said.

Vernon was booked into the Oak Harbor jail and then transferred to the Island County jail in Coupeville.

He had a hearing Friday and bail was set at $50,000.

He remains incarcerated at the Island County jail and faces a charge of assault in the second degree.

NCIS unveils new anonymous text and tip hotline

Naval Criminal Investigative Service is trying to make it easier to keep our communities safe.

NCIS has implemented a new anonymous crime tip hot line. The text and web tip hotline — referred to as Text & Tip for short — takes advantage of the technology people use every day and allows crime tips to be sent to NCIS via cell phone and/ or Internet.

“For years, NCIS has used informants as sources,” said Supervisory Special Agent James Campbell. “When you do that, informants become known. NCIS has never had a real Crimestoppers-type program that was anonymous.”

Officials hope the anonymity of the Text & Tip program will encourage friends, neighbors and community members --- civilian or military --- to speak up, in a manner of speaking, when they see something wrong.

“This allows people to provide information without being identified,” Campbell said.

Text & Tip is simple to use. Begin a tip with ‘NCIS,’ add the information and send it to 274637 (CRIMES).

The information is routed to NCIS headquarters, where it is then forwarded to agents.

There are no phone numbers or email addresses associated with the tips, but a general number is assigned to the tip as a way of identifying it for agents.

“This allows us to take over when we get the tip and we can actually communicate with the tipster if we need

to gather additional information,” said Campbell. “We will ask if the tipster is willing to meet with an agent, but it is not required.”

Tips can also be submitted online at www.NCIS. navy.mil or at www.NAVSEA. navy.mil. Online tips are sent through a secure connection and are encrypted to remain confidential and anonymous.

Those wishing to remain anonymous should not use their email accounts to send a tip, because email transmissions are not considered secure, said Campbell.

If the tip leads to the arrest of a suspect or the recovery of stolen property, drugs or an illegal weapon, the anonymous tipster can even collect a reward.

The new tip line coincides with the NCIS’ latest quarterly campaign, Insider Threat, which can encompass a number of different things.

While insider threats and espionage concerns affect military workplaces in particular, figures from the Bureau of Justice Statistics say 1.7 million workers are victims of assault in the workplace each year, ranging from bullying and harassment to physical

assaults. Any kind of threats of this nature can be reported to the new Text & Tip line.

“It can be intimidating to some people,” said Special Agent Caroline Braatz. “Who do you call? Where do you go? This gives them an avenue to call someone.”

“It goes hand in hand with Text & Tip,” Campbell said.

“There are a lot of things to be aware of, such as workplace violence. Or somebody

could be threatening a neighborhood. You don’t want to spy on your neighbors, but if you know there is something wrong, you don’t want to turn a blind eye, either.”

The agents also gave general safety guidelines for using social media. They discouraged people from posting certain kinds of information on Facebook that would allow people to know their spouse will be gone on

Fairies make magic at Meerkerk Meerkerk Gardens was festively infested by fairies on a glorious, sunny Saturday in Greenbank.

With hundreds of rhododendrons and other plants in bloom over acres of gardens, little fairies sporting wings, fancy dresses and garlands in their hair flittered from flower to flower, stopping to pose for pictures taken by proud parents and grandparents.

The number of fairies at the annual “Meerkerk Magic” day, which draws lots of girls and a few boys from throughout the island, surprised even veterans of the event.

“It’s a wonderful turnout,” said volunteer Susie Reynolds, who has been donating her time at Meerkerk for six years.

tons of fairies,” said Airlee Anderson, another volunteer at the gardens. The fairies were impossible to count as they darted behind huge, flowering bushes and trees, trying out their new wings.

Some of the wings were homemade or purchased, looking like satin and silk.

Others were picked up from the forest floor, the skeletal remains of Asian magnolia leaves. The long, broad leaves drop to the garden’s floor in the fall and provide food for insects during the winter. By the time spring

arrives, they appear to be delicate, gossamer wings when fitted to the backs of happy children.

Kids made their own fairies using parts picked from the forest floor and a glue gun, then congregated to hear fairy tales told by Annie Horton, the Fairy Godmother of Meerkerk Gardens.

“They were really fun fairy stories,” said Lily Zustiak, 9, a fairy from Coupeville.

As her daughter Clara, age 2 1/2, played among the rhododendrons, Eve Guiles of Oak Harbor soaked up the sun and the beauty of the setting.

“It’s wonderful,” she said, perfectly describing the magic she found at Meerkerk Gardens.

Ground broken for $22.4 million project

More than a decade of effort came to fruition last week when Island Transit held a groundbreaking ceremony signifying the start of construction on its new headquarters on Highway 20 just south of Coupeville.

The event was attended by a healthy crowd of supporters, employees and a host of dignitaries, which ranged from 2nd District Democratic Congressman Rick Larsen and elected officials from the multiple Whidbey Island municipalities that make up the transit agency’s board of directors to a ranking administrator with the Federal Transit Administration.

“As a local elected official, I never thought this day would come,” said Coupeville Town Councilman Bob Clay, who is also the chairman of the transit board.

“I am proud to be part of this,” he said.

The transportation service has been seeking funding to replace its existing base of operations with a new administrative building and maintenance shop, totaling 43,000

square feet, since the late 1990s.

The funding finally became available late last year when the transit agency was awarded a $17.92-million grant through the “State of Good Repair Programs,” which is administered by the Federal Transit Administration.

The federal grant does require a funding match of 20 percent. It’s estimated the total cost of the project will tab out to about $22.4 million Congressman Larsen has been credited with being instrumental in the effort. At the podium, he said this was an expensive project but necessary as transit systems are vital to the overall health of a community.

“You can’t have a big league economy with a little league infrastructure,” Larsen said.

“This really is a great story and I’m really glad to be a part of it,” he said.

“This really is your project, Martha,” Bull said.

Echoing those sentiments was Island Transit operator Odis Jenkins. Also a deacon with Living Faith Christian Church in Oak Harbor, Jenkins led the crowd in a prayer blessing the project but before doing so acknowledged Rose’s long efforts and what she means to company employees.

“The words are not enough,” Jenkins said.

Rose was presented with a shovel decorated with the signatures of transit staff along with a poem talking about the project, the history of how it came to fruition and Rose’s personal contributions.

Following the ceremony, Rose said she was overwhelmed by the project finally becoming a reality and the many nice things said on her behalf.

“I really am speechless,” Rose said. “I can’t believe it.”

“I’m thrilled to death,” she said.

by Skagit Bay Search and Rescue simulates a marine accident and gives professional and volunteer rescue crews a chance to coordinate their procedures and skills.

The agencies will respond to a simulated boat collision

involving two fully loaded pleasure boats, where one boat sinks. The people in need of rescue will be represented by weighted detergent bottles that float with the currents. Search and rescue crews will arrive as if responding to a real event.

They will practice search patterns, rescue techniques and medical evacuations both by boat and helicopter.

the Coast Guard will be able to reassure callers that this is not an actual emergency,” said Ron Shrigley of Skagit Bay Search and Rescue.

Skagit Bay Search and Rescue and North Whidbey Fire and Rescue are coordinating the training exercise, one of the few chances local marine safety groups have to practice their skills together in field conditions.

Other agencies involved are

sheriff marine patrols from Skagit and Island counties, Swinomish Tribal Police, Deception Pass State Park, NAS Whidbey Search and Rescue, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and two U.S. Coast Guard divisions --- Sector Puget Sound and Station Bellingham.

The training exercise runs from noon to 3 p.m., originating at Deception Pass State Park.

A crowning achievement Island Transit Director Martha Rose was the personification of the phrase “crowning achievement” as she fielded accolades April 10 during the groundbreaking ceremony for the bus system’s long-needed headquarters expansion south of Coupeville.

Rose has dedicated her professional life to Island Transit, making Island County’s no-fare bus service beloved locally, regionally and nationally. There’s just something about a free, friendly, county bus service and Rose’s enthusiastic promotion of such service that hits a soft spot in the hearts of public transportation supporters.

Rose has landed numerous grants in the past to purchase buses and vans and install bus shelters. But it’s taken her years to find the money to build an adequate headquarters with needed office and mechanical facilities.

Through the years, the single restroom in the existing building became a symbol of the need for an upgrade, as did the two-station bus garage where mechanics have to work on dozens of buses and vans.

Last fall, Island Transit was awarded a $17.92 million Federal Transit Administration grant to fund the bulk of the $22.4 million expansion project. U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, who played a role in landing the grant, told the groundbreaking crowd that he was “proud to be a part of it.” Gina Bull, standing in for state Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, who has long been a champion of Island Transit, summed it up by turning to Rose and saying, “This is really your project, Martha.”

In April, when islanders were busy sending checks to the IRS, it was good to see millions of federal tax dollars coming home. It was just another example of how islanders receive far more in federal spending than they pay out.

Construction workers will appreciate the jobs the construction project will produce in the coming months and even islanders who don’t ride the bus will appreciate improvements to Highway 20 that are tied into the project. But most of all, we should all take a moment to appreciate Martha Rose, whose long career is now capped off by her crowning achievement.

Why were Congressman Rick Larsen, Island County Commissioner Angie Homola and Island County Commissioner Helen Price Johnson celebrating the groundbreaking of Island Transit’s construction project?

This government-sponsored project unarguably encroaches upon NAS Whidbey Island airfield facility Outlying Field (OLF) Coupeville. Ironically, this groundbreaking occurred less than a week after an F/A-18 crashed near NAS Oceana inside the boundaries of an established Accident Potential Zone (APZ), coinciding with people living near Oceana demanding state and federal dollars to expand safety buffers around local military air stations.

sound like something that well-informed people in Island County would spend their money to locate near or beneath a military aircraft landing pattern, but it’s apparently something to celebrate for some politicians.

Mussel discs still a problem Now that four months has transpired since my Dec. 11 letter, “Mussel discs spoil beaches,” along with Mr. Ian Jefferds’ (Penn Cove Shellfish) reply on this issue, I am wondering if the mussel collection bin idea has been further pursued?

I am also wondering if Mr. Jefferds promotes that “mussel credit” can be obtained for turned in discs by aggressively advertising that fact? Had I collected all the discs I saw that day

at the beach I would have received a very long supply of mussels.

These discs are a significant source of Penn Cove beach litter that could be better controlled. Styrofoam, bags, rope, shotgun casings, etc., are not as controllable until the day people become more responsible. It is commendable that Penn Cove Shellfish claims to pick up this other litter when they do their “six to eight beach clean ups,” but I suggest if they are really serious this should be done about every three weeks instead.

Perhaps I was on the beach on the cusp of this six to eight week clean up, because there were scores of the discs everywhere and they were the most prominent form of litter. More importantly, can PCS do more to stop the discs from escaping the farm in the first place?

Park district appointments due

The North Whidbey Park and Recreation District Board of Commissioners is scheduled to name a new executive director and perhaps a new commissioner at a meeting beginning at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 19 at the John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool meeting room.

The commissioners interviewed six candidates last week via Skype, but they delayed making a decision

until Thursday’s meeting.

The commissioners decided to defer the decision because of confusion surrounding the public notification process.

The person selected will replace Craig Carlson, who resigned his position in December. The commissioners declined to reveal the names of any of the finalists for his position.

Also at the meeting, the elected board hopes to appoint a replacement for commissioner and board president Ron Rhinehart,

who resigned his seat because he is moving to Washington, D.C. Allan McDougall and Bob Wilson have expressed interest in the position. As possible appointees to an elected position, they will be interviewed in public Thursday. Commissioners Rhinehart, Harvey Prosser, Dennis Jepsen, Scott Vogt and Sean Merrill can then discuss their qualifications in a private executive session, but must make any decisions in public.

Health benefits and small business tracked

National Employee Benefits Day was celebrated April 2 in the U.S. I had to look hard for any benefit trends that look encouraging for small business owners and individuals.

These are historic times for employee benefits in the U.S. as the Supreme Court hears arguments on the federal health reform law. For decades, health insurance, the most important employee benefit, has been highly regulated by the states, and now the federal government wants to take on far more regulatory power over health insurance.

Health insurance, while maybe not a right, is certainly a need for us all. But the fast increase in the cost of health care itself has priced most of us out of the market for traditional first-dollar medical coverage.

Working Americans look to our employers for help in meeting many of our life needs and for years employer-sponsored benefits programs have been critical to maintaining protections and security for ourselves and our families. Large employers offer significant financial support toward the cost of employee benefits, such as medical and dental coverage, basic life insurance and a match in a 401(k) plan.

But medical insurance plans with rich benefit designs are now so costly, they have become a luxury maintained only by major corporations, union-negotiated plans and government employers.

Start-up entrepreneurs and small business owners find it tough to pay for employee medical insurance. I hear this every day from small business owners I work with around the nation. Nowadays, to find affordable health insurance, most small businesses and individuals must selfinsure thousands of dollars in health care each year by selecting a high-deductible medical insurance plan. Most, but not everyone, can afford these slimmed-down plans.

Instead, small employers have had to cut back on their contributions toward employee benefits, reduce employee hours to part-time status with no benefits and even terminate benefit plans. More small business owners have realized that maintaining costly group medical insurance for the benefit of employees and their dependents, particularly those with severe pre-existing medical conditions, may even be beyond the scope of what a small business can be expected to do.

For many, the workplace is becoming a place where employees are given opportunities to purchase voluntary benefits to meet their personal and family needs, cafeteria style, with no employer contribution to subsidize the cost.

Still, National Employee Benefits Day is a good time to take a step back and reflect on the often over-looked value of the employee benefits plans provided by employers.

If you are employed, it is a good time to remind yourself that your employee benefits are valuable. Take steps to increase your knowledge and understanding of the benefits that are available to you. Read the

information your employer provides. Visit provider websites. Talk about employee benefits with colleagues and family. All of this will increase the value to you of the benefits provided by your employer.

Here are some health trends that seem to be going in the right direction for small business owners and individuals: Federal and state tax preferences for people (not just large corporations) who buy health insurance and are willing to self-insure a portion of their health care expenses by selecting a higher deductible under a qualified Health Savings Account (HSA) medical insurance plan.

Proposals (not included in the federal reform law) to extend the same tax deductibility of health insurance to individuals that has existed for corporations under the tax code for decades, so people can buy portable, guaranteed renewable health insurance from major insurers across state boundaries. The federal health reform law provides hundreds of millions in funding for 50 separate intra-state exchanges. If we’re going to have exchanges, why not extend them nationally, across state lines, to provide truly significant market impact on access and price of health insurance through competition?

Proposals (not included in the federal reform law) for consumer-disclosed pricing of health care services, so we know in advance the actual cost of treatments we want covered under our health insurance.

State and federal programs to guarantee access to health care for people with pre-existing conditions, including health insurance for those who can pay and care subsidies for those who cannot pay.

Health insurance benefit designs focused on first-dollar coverage of preventive health care and the elimination of lifetime benefit ceilings.

More reliable government funding of health care for people who are indigent, uninsured working poor and unemployed.

Partnerships between health care providers and insurers to be more effective in providing medically needed care at the right time and in the right setting, with market negotiated pricing.

Use of more efficient administrative models by providers, insurers and government, including secure electronic patient records and programs to root out fraud and waste.

I plan to check back next year to see how these benefit trends actually play out for small business owners.

Navy campaign spotlights sexual assault in April The U.S. Navy is serious about preventing sexual assault within its ranks, and Whidbey Island Naval Air Station is serious about it as well.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and NASWI’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program developed a campaign to increase awareness of the crimes of sexual assault and rape.

“Silent No More” is a series of silhouettes of men and women that have been placed in strategic locations all over the base.

Each silhouette represents a victim connected to the Navy in some way. All the teal-painted wooden cutouts have a story attached.

Planning seeks to fill vacancy The Island County Board of Commissioners is seeking to fill a spot on the county’s planning commission that became vacant when Camano Island resident William Lippens resigned to take a job in another location.

Applicants must live within Commissioner District 3, which covers North Whidbey and Camano Island. The term expires on Jan. 2, 2014.

The county commissioners appoint planning commission members for four-year terms.

The planning commission consists of nine members, three from each county commissioner district.

OBITUARY Richard Eldredge Siggens

Richard Eldredge Siggens, 79, of Oak Harbor, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at Island Hospital in Anacortes, following an extended battle with cancer.

Mr. Siggens was born in Evanston, Ill., on April 1, 1933, to Ray and Helen (Eldredge) Siggens. He lived in Park Ridge, Ill., from 1945 until 1984, when he moved to Washington state, living for a time in both Bothell and Arlington before moving to Oak Harbor.

Richard was employed as a night watchman for the Museum of Flight and was also a 23-year volunteer for the Museum’s Restoration Center in Everett. He dearly loved this job and the people he worked with and referred to it as “one-half hobby shop and one-half social club.”

Richard served his country in the US Army from 19511953.

Richard is survived by his brother and sister-in-law

Evelyn Dorothy Perry

Evelyn Dorothy Perry, 92, of Sedro-Woolley, passed away April 12, 2012, at Burton Care Center in Burlington.

She was born Feb. 6, 1920, to Stephen and Edith (Shean) Macias in Pomona, Calif. She married Frederick Perry in Long Beach, Calif., on Feb. 18, 1945. They made their home in Venice, Calif., for many years, moving to and living in Oak Harbor for 35 years, spending the last several years at Country Meadow Village in SedroWoolley.

Evelyn was very involved with Las Duenas Charitable Organization in Santa Monica, Calif., and the Venice PTA. She enjoyed dancing professionally. She was an artist, using many different mediums, both

painting and working with charcoal. When they lived in Oak Harbor, she attended the Christian Women’s Club and was involved with the Elks Auxiliary.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter Diane and husband Rudolph Villegas of Queen Creek, Ariz.; sister, Frances Cromwell, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; grandsons, James Villegas, Steven and wife Lisa Villegas, and David and wife, Caroline Villegas; and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 64 years, Frederick Perry.

Johnston, Curtis lead local runners in marathon

Oak Harbor’s Mike Johnston and Kimberly Curtis were the top local finishers in the 11th annual Whidbey Island Marathon Sunday.

Tahome Khalsa of Seattle and Kristen Carter of Bellingham captured the men’s and women’s divisions in the 26-mile race on a cool, partly cloudy morning.

Khalsa, in his first attempt at the Whidbey Marathon, stormed the course in 2:40:15, seven seconds in front of Seattle’s Steve Dekoker, who won the Whidbey half marathon in 2010.

Johnston was 12th overall out of 124 in 3:27:20.

Khalsa said, “It’s a gamble with these races; you never know who’s going to come out.”

He added that he and Dekoker were neck and neck throughout the race: “He’s taller so he beat me on the down hills. I’m shorter so I beat him on the uphills. It just came to a sprint at the end.”

Carter, the top woman out of 92, finished sixth overall in 3:01:31.

Curtis was 14th, 56th overall, in 3:53:57.

Khalsa and Carter each won $1,000; $500 went to the second-place finishers and $250 for third.

In the half marathon, Andy Wyman and Maryann Durhkoff led the local runners while Joseph Gray of Newcastle, Wash., and Kristi Houk of Port Orchard took the titles.

Gray won in 1:09:25, edging Woodinville’s Eric Garner at 1:10:53 in a field of 383.

Wyman placed sixth overall in 1:19:19.

Wildcats edged twice in tennis prep roundup The Oak Harbor High School tennis team stumbled twice this week, falling to Everett 4-3 at home Friday and 5-2 at Lynnwood Monday.

The team score was close against Everett, but all of the matches were won in straight sets, often by onesided scores.

The Oak Harbor baseball team cut down the tying run at the plate on the game’s final play to win 6-5 at Everett Friday.

The Seagulls loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, then hit a grounder up the middle that Oak Harbor shortstop Grant Schroeder knocked down.

One runner scored as Schroeder flipped the ball to second baseman Andrew Snavely. Snavely threw to catcher Sam Glavick to nail Reece Hoiby trying the score the tying run from second.

Most of the game’s offense came early when Oak Harbor started with three runs in the first and Everett countered with two.

Schroeder, Mitch Mertins and Jack Richter opened the game with singles to get one run. RBI groundouts by Glavick and David Kusnick scored Mertins and Richter.

The Wildcats added a run in the second when Mike Maletto singled, was bunted to second by Nate Stanford and scored on Schroeder’s single.

Everett tied the game with two runs in the fifth, then Oak Harbor went up 6-4 in the sixth. Kusnick and Austyn Walker started things with walks. Kusnick eventually scored on a wild pitch and Anthony Stewart singled in Walker.

Glavick had the only other Oak Harbor hit.

Schroeder started on the mound and went four-andtwo-thirds innings, giving up six hits, no walks and four runs (three earned).

Zach Zimmer finished the game and had four strikeouts while yielding two hits, a walk, a hit batter and two runs (zero earned).

The Wildcats committed seven errors and four mental mistakes, according to coach Jess Weikle, and the OHHS offense generated only three hits to make life easier for the Grizzlies.

Grizzlies blank Wildcats in soccer After tying Glacier Peak earlier this season, the Oak Harbor High School soccer team was hoping to pick up a win this time around, but the Grizzlies defeated the Wildcats 4-0 in Snohomish Monday.

Glacier Peak upped its record to 3-4-3 with the win while Oak Harbor fell to 0-9-1.

Coupeville drops pair on diamond Coupeville lost a 10-5 nonleague game to Friday Harbor at Sherman Field Friday and then fell 13-8 at Sultan Monday.

Against Friday Harbor, Coupeville came back from a four-run deficit to even the score, but the Wolverines racked up six runs over the final three innings to pull away.

Down 4-0, the Wolves scored three in the third behind hits by Wade Schaef, Jake Tumblin (double) and Drew Chan.

In the bottom of the fourth, The Wolves tied it at 4-4 when Kurtis Smith led off with a single and scored on Tumblin’s base hit.

From there the Coupeville offense couldn’t keep pace with the Wolverines who scored three in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Tumblin finished 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and three stolen bases, and Chan was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Against Sultan, the Wolves (0-8, 2-12) rallied for four in the seventh but couldn’t keep up with the Turks who scored in every inning, including four in the first.

Sultan (4-8, 7-8) pounded out 11 hits with three doubles and two home runs.

Mussels in the Kettles rode to success Mussels in the Kettles, a ride through the Kettles Trail System, was a success for the Whidbey Island Bicycle Club, according to club president and event organizer Brian Wood.

The club attracted approximately 160 riders, versus 60 last year, which was the first year of the event, so the club raised more than $2,000, Wood said.

to a challenge that tests brains and brawn

This is no ordinary walk in the woods. This is a run, at the mercy of nature and knowledge of your surroundings. This is an adrenaline-packed race through thorny bushes, over logs and into mud that takes brains as well as brawn.

This is the sport of orienteering, and the 2012 United States Interscholastic and Intercollegiate Orienteering Championships are coming to Fort Ebey and Fort Casey state parks Saturday, April 21. The competition will continue in Snohomish County on Sunday, April 22.

The race begins at 10 a.m.

Saturday, April 21 at Fort Ebey State Park.

The sport can be as recreational or as competitive as the participant wants, and unlike just going for a run, orienteering stimulates the brain, too, said Patrick Nuss, event director and board member for the Cascade Orienteering Club, the nonprofit group based in Seattle that was selected to host this event.

This is the second time the competition is being held on the West Coast.

While competitors are already signed up, an easier, recreational demonstration course will be available for the curious on Saturday, April 21. No pre-registration is required; just show up at Fort Ebey State Park with the $10 fee.

For those who don’t want to participate but still want to learn about the sport, Nuss said the finish line is a good place to spectate.

Competitors will stream across the meadow as they rush to finish.

People may also watch a relay race at Fort Casey State Park beginning at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21.

Orienteering involves using a map to navigate to various checkpoints in order and as quickly as possible, Nuss said. The maps are very detailed so competitors choose their path by finding references.

“It’s about trying to figure out what you’re seeing on the terrain and seeing it on the map,” Nuss said, adding, “it’s more about a map sport than a compass sport.”

Orienteering competitors race to the finish line with the help of maps and their knowledge of their surroundings. They must find each checkpoint, shown at top as orange flags, in order and in the least amount of time.

Watch them compete or join a recreational course Saturday, April 21 at Fort Ebey State Park.

Participants wear an electronic device on their finger. When they discover a checkpoint, which is generally marked by a one-foot-byone-foot orange flag, they insert the device into the box and it records their progress, Nuss said. At the end of the race, the information from the device is downloaded to see how fast the participant made it to each checkpoint and if they found them in order.

Nuss said that many people think orienteering is like geocaching, in which people search for treasures using GPS coordinates, but orienteering is much different.

“You are your own GPS unit, so to speak. You are making your own decisions and navigating to that checkpoint,” Nuss said.

The sport is a fun way to get close to nature --- really close.

Competitors venture off the trails and climb over logs and through ferns and get dirty.

However, Nuss’ favorite part about the sport is that it works the mind while working the body.

“It’s really a sport that captures both the mental and the physical aspect,” Nuss said. He sees naturally fast participants, like members of high school cross country and track teams, but he also sees

students from chess clubs and academic decathlon teams.

“The smarter, non-jock type athletes can do really well because it’s tailored to what they’re doing,” Nuss said.

Approximately 350 people are signed up to race at Fort Ebey State Park Saturday. The majority will be middle and high school students, as well as some college students, Nuss said.

Among the competitors are Oak Harbor High School students Erdylle Macapinlac, Haruka Earney, Todd Adair and Carl Stacy.

Orienteering is part of the NJROTC program at the high school.

“It seemed like a fun thing to do outside of drill team,” Adair said.

Macapinlac said she has the scars to prove how hard she’s worked.

“They think it’s fun to have checkpoints made of thorn bushes,” Macapinlac said.

The team has about eight meets per year. This competition is outside of those normal meets so not all orienteering team members are participating.

The students described the meets as cold.

“Cold weather, you’re freezing, literally. Raining,” Macapinlac said.

“After awhile, you don’t feel the cold,” Earney added.

“It’s not like a regular park; it’s a forest, with thorns,” Macapinlac said. That means that by the end of the race, competitors are dripping wet and muddy, especially with the typical Whidbey weather, they said.

But they’re still excited to participate.

“It’s a good feeling every time you find the right marker; a sense of accomplishment,” Adair said.

Concerts on the Cove brings in bluegrass band

Sticking with their tradition of presenting diverse music, Coupeville’s Concerts on the Cove is bringing the bluegrass band Northern Departure to the Fort Casey Theater at Camp Casey at 4 p.m.

Sunday, April 22.

Northern Departure is “an original and bluegrass style music,” said Concerts on the Cove President Dave Binder.

The band formed in 2008 and has played a combination of original, contemporary and bluegrass favorites in such venues as Seattle’s Moore and Paramount theaters as well as several bluegrass festivals on the West Coast.

“Our music is never the same over and over. It’s very diversified,” Binder added.

Concerts on the Cove is a nonprofit group with the goal of bringing affordable concerts to Whidbey Island. Binder said he hears about concerts that cost $50 or more per ticket.

“We would never, ever do that,” Binder said.

Tickets to this concert are $15 in advance from brownpapertickets.com or $18 at the door.

Concerts on the Cove has been bringing concerts to the area for 24 years, with approximately 250 concerts. The group holds summer concerts and one grand concert per year at Langley High School.

This year, it will feature the Island Community Band.

Tickets for sale for Soroptimists’ first awards banquet Soroptimist International of Oak Harbor is holding its first annual awards banquet from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Thursday, May 3 at the CPO Club ballroom on Ault Field Road.

Celebrate the growth of Soroptimists’ 2012 awards and scholarship winners.

A no-host social begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:15 p.m. Tickets are $25 and include dinner.

The program will feature recipients of five awards and scholarships that Soroptimist International of Oak Harbor gives to deserving women each year. These women will share their stories of triumph through adversity, as well as how these awards will change their lives and the lives of individuals in the community.

The event also features two of the past award winners. Guests will be inspired as they hear how receiving an award from the club has helped their path to education so that they might achieve their dreams.

Soroptimist International of Oak Harbor is dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls throughout the world and within the community. Winners of these awards are not just given a check and allowed to fade into the distance. Soroptimist continues to offer them support and ongoing encourage-

ment through their mentoring program, which strives to provide helpful resources and ongoing encouragement while they continue their journey to a healthy and suc-

cessful personal and professional life.

Guests may further support the awards and scholarship programs with a Fund-ANeed portion of the evening.

Novel reading, signing will be set to jazz music Molly Larson Cook will read excerpts from her jazz novel, “Listen,” with live jazz by Don Wodjenski, tenor sax, and Dale Stirling, bass, at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21 at Wind and Tide Books on Pioneer Way, Oak Harbor.

“Listen” brings together a female singer from Idaho, a cozy club in Manhattan, the spirit of Billie Holiday and a love story that refuses to end, according to a press release.

Cook credits her love of jazz and “a story someone told me about the night he saw Billie in New York” for the novel, according to a release.

She teaches writing on Whidbey Island and will lead a workshop in May titled, “Everything Else I Know About Writing I Learned in Jazz Clubs.”

Wodjenski and Stirling are familiar to jazz lovers on Whidbey as members of DBJazz, based in Coupeville.

Wodjenski is also an artist, teacher, jazz enthusiast and 33-year resident of the island.

Stirling is a historical researcher, author, poet, tuba player and music collector.
