Once again, a close vote for school bonds By DEAN A. RADFORD dradford@rentonreporter.com

The $97 million school-improvement bond in the Renton School District, just shy of 60 percent yes vote needed for approval Tuesday night, made up significant ground in Wednesday’s count. The count Wednesday, the last avail-

able before the Renton Reporter deadline, added 880 votes to the yes column, pushing the approval to 60.28 percent of the vote. Tuesday night, the percentage had stood at 59.49. The upward momentum had Renton school Superintendent Mary Alice Heuschel saying “yay” on Wednesday. The

called the jump significant. She was hoping that by today (Friday) that “we will have a positive outcome.” The proceeds of the bond would build a much-needed new middle school and make

other improvements in the school district. The measure was placed on the April 17 special election ballot after it was narrowly rejected in the February special selection. New results will be released daily at about 4:30 p.m. on the King County website, kingcounty.gov. The election will be certified on April 27.

Where to buy liquor in Renton will jump 8-fold starting in June

By DEAN A. RADFORD dradford@rentonreporter.com

Come June, spirits are going on the move, to about 30 stores in Renton. You’ll find them at Uwajimaya, Rite Aid, Safeway, Walgreens and even Target. They are among about two dozen retail outlets, from chains such as QFC to smaller grocers such as Saar’s Market Place in the High-

lands, that have applied for a liquor license to take advantage of Initiative 1183 that privatized liquor sales in Washington. The state officially is out of the retail liquor business in June. Until then, the Washington state Liquor Control Board is busy processing those liquor licenses and auctioning off 167 state-owned liquor stores. Right now, Renton has four li[ more liquor page 19 ]

Renton City Council voted unanimously Monday night to put a measure on the Aug. 7 election ballot asking voters to choose where they want to locate the downtown library. The choices are between the current site over the Cedar River and the previously chosen site – the former Big 5 Sporting Goods store on Third Street next to the Piazza. Council members are still trying to hammer out the specific ballot language with Zanetta Fontes, senior assistant city attorney, and they expect to reach that decision at their April 23 meeting. Fontes will present a couple different versions from which the council can choose. The resolutions will include the ballot title, a concise 75-word statement and the actual question before voters. Ballot measure must be submitted to the King County Elections Office no later than April 25 to get the measure on the Aug. 7 ballot. Next comes work on the 250-word explanatory statement, which Fontes must complete by May 15. City Clerk Bonnie Walton would coordinate the formation of the “pro” and “con” committees whose statements have to be written by May 21; rebuttal statements are due May 23. [ more library page 10 ]
