Bonney Lake High School football coach Chad Barrett resigned his employment with the Sumner School District April 4, following an investigation that found him responsible for up to $20,000 missing from ASB funds. The money—which could
amount anywhere from $16,000 to $20,000—was determined to be missing from two football program fundraisers: sales of discount cards and a letter-writing campaign to solicit donations from businesses. School officials were quick to point out each of the fundraisers were school fundraisers not associated with the independently-operated Panthers Booster Club.
Parties who made donations to the football program during the 2011 fall season are being asked by the district to contact their Business Services division at 253891-6010. Barrett resigned under a voluntary agreement hashed out between the district, himself and his attorney around 5:30 p.m. April 4. In an official statement released by the school district, Barrett said funds he collected from ASB fundraisers are missing and unaccounted for, and that he was responsible for those funds.

A would-be burglar got more than he bargained for Thursday in Bonney Lake when the homeowner confronted the man with a shotgun, firing once at the suspect’s vehicle as he fled the scene. No one was injured in the incident. According to Bonney Lake Police Officer Todd Green, the incident began at 9:44 a.m. with a report of a home invasion/robbery in progress in the 8000 block of 205th Avenue East. While police were en route, dispatch notified them that the suspect had fled the scene. Green said the homeowner was asleep at home when he heard his doorbell ring. He ignored the bell, but then heard what sounded like someone kicking at his door. The homeowner then armed himself with a shotgun and opened the door, making contact with the suspect, who immediately fled to his vehicle and drove away.
