New member appointed to Black Diamond council BY DENNIS BOX dbox@maplevalleyreporter.com

The Black Diamond City Council filled the empty seat in the front of the room. At the council’s March 15 meeting the members appointed Carol Benson to fill Position No. 4 vacated by William Saas. Benson will be sworn in prior to the March 26 special council meeting at 4 p.m. and the ceremonial swearing in will be April 5.

“We have four extremely qualified candidates in front of us. This has been a tough decision. We really can’t lose because we have four great people.” Ron Taylor

Five filed applications for the seat. One applicant, Bill Roth, withdrew his application. The council interviewed the other four March 8. Melanie Gauthier was interviewed by phone because she was on a previously scheduled vacation. The other two interviewed, along with Benson, were Bob Rothchilds and Greg Thesenvitz, who is currently a vice chair of the Planning Commission. Councilman Ron Taylor said during the meeting on March 15, “We have four extremely qualified candidates in front of us. This has been a tough decision. We really can’t lose because we have four great people.” Taylor said the council considered the applicants carefully as well as “input from the community.”

Saas, who won his seat in November 2009, served during a period of time the council faced some controversial and difficult decisions, including the weeks of hearings and eventual approval of the two YarrowBay master planned development ordinances in 2010. Saas recused himself from the development agreement hearings in September 2011. He resigned Jan. 21 citing the demands of his work schedule as the principal reason for his decision to leave the council.

Grass Lake Elementary awash with art Study to BY KRIS HILL khill@covingtonreporter.com

Grass Lake Elementary is literally covered in art. Student created works are all over the walls from one end of the school to the other and while they were initially put up for the Gator Gallery Art Walk on March 15 they will remain the rest of the school year, according to Karin Deti, parent and chair of the school’s art docent committee. “I just got confirmation from the principal (on Monday) that we can keep all the artwork up,” Deti said. “That’s not something we normally get to do.” Deti coordinated the art walk which included artist demonstrations, music, an appearance by cast members of Kentlake High School’s production of “Beauty and the Beast” as well as hands on art projects for youngsters. It is an extension of the school’s art docent program, Deti explained, which has about 20 parents who volunteer. The program is affiliated with the Interurban Center for the Arts which is part of the Green River Community Arts Foundation. “This is kind of a really easy, step by step program,” Deti said. “I’m not an artist, either, but I love having art in the schools. There’s Dustin Maitre, 6, works on a project during the Gator Gallery Art Walk March 15 at Grass Lake Elementary. More than a decade ago when Covington’s city limits were drawn a large chunk of property on the northern edge was left out — now a pair of property owners are working with the city to figure out how to bring it back in. Known for years as the Northern Notch, the 272 acre chunk of land bounded by state Route 18 and Southeast Wax Road to the south and north then 180th Avenue Southeast on the west, has been on the city of Covington’s potential annexation area list known as PAA No. 4. Covington’s Community Development Director Richard Hart explained one of the property owners, BranBar, has tried unsuccessfully to get King County to bring the area into the urban growth boundary. This is the first thing that would [ more STUDY page 5 ]
