Gray whale exhibit opens in Redondo On March 3, Highline Community College’s Marine Science and Technology Center (MaST) unveiled its newest resident, a 40-foot gray whale skeleton. The public can view the skeleton 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays at the center, located next to Salty’s in Redondo (28203 Redondo Beach Dr. S.). Admission is free. The exhibition, “2010 Arroyo Gray Whale, Footprints of a Whale,” features the 1,700-pound gray whale skeleton. Interactive displays will be open through April, and include the blubber, contents of the stomach, a smell station, slideshows and more insight into the life of the whale. The preservation of the original baleen makes this gray whale display unlike any other on the West Coast. The baleen is a bristle-like organ in the whale’s mouth that serves as filtration system.

The Federal Way Farmers Market will open at original location for the 2012 season. The market has been somewhat nomadic the past couple of years. After spending its first seven seasons at The Commons Mall parking lot, the market relocated last year to the former AMC Theatres site on 20th Avenue South. However, the vacant parking lot at that location is being prepped for a future mixed-use development. Organizers said the market will open 9 a.m. May 12 near the mall’s southwest corner, at South 324th Street and Pacific Highway South (behind Sears). [ more MARKET, page 18 ]

City allows banners over roads By Greg Allmain gallmain@federalwaymirror.com

With the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials coming in June, the Federal Way City Council fast-tracked a set of amendments to the city’s code, allowing for city-sponsored civic and community events to be advertised using large banners across the right of ways. Along with this, the code amendments will allow for pole banners to be placed throughout the city to advertise local events. Margaret Clark, senior planner for the city, explained the reasoning behind the amendments. “Throughout the year, we have very important civic and community events that occur in Federal Way,” Clark said. “Some examples of events that the city has sponsored in the past are the farmers market, Buds and Bloom festival, Slavic Community Festival, Han WooRi Korean Festival, the sand sculpting competition, and then we have the Olympic Dive Trials coming up in June.” Clark said such events have been publicized through the newspaper and on the city’s website. The hope with the new code amendments is to create more exposure for Federal Way’s annual and semi-annual celebrations. “Having banners in the right of way

both emergency and fire responses. The lagging economy has led to drastic financial cuts for the fire district. If approved, the levy is expected to generate $3.5 million per year for four years. About $1 million will return one emergency aid car to service. SKFR’s original aid car fleet was four units. The staffing equivalent of one-and-a-half aid

cars was taken out of service in 2011 due to budget cuts. All SKFR personnel are trained in both firefighting and emergency medical services (EMS). Most of the district’s roughly 15,000 calls per year are EMS calls. In 2011, the district responded to 75 structure fires. Restoring the aid car and staff

will help stabilize response times between four to six minutes. Money from the levy will also protect the fire district’s reserve fund, which is filling a budget gap. With the levy, the level of service will be at 20072008 levels, the district reports. Should the levy fail in the April special election, the fire district [ more LEVY, page 18 ]
