Neighbors’ plea pushes big rigs off residential curb New law restricts where heavy trucks can park By ROBERT WHALE rwhale@auburn-reporter.com

For Antonetta Fioretti and her neighbors, life on G Street Southeast has been sweet.

Until, that is, the first commercial truck parked about three weeks ago on the quiet residential street, to be followed shortly thereafter by two of its big

cousins. Much to the dismay of homeowners, some of whom had lived peaceably there for more than 50 years. Residents fumed that the trucks were laying some serious

ugly on one of Auburn’s finer downtown streets. Plus, they said, the rigs posed a safety hazard, particularly to the generous sprinkling of older folk there who couldn’t always see around them.

“The way they parked showed they didn’t care about you driving out of your driveway,” Fioretti said. “Plus, on this street the neighbors check on each other — they couldn’t see what was going on.” [ more PARKING page 11 ]

EXPLORING THE POSSIBILITIES Youth find value, career pathways with program BY MARK KLAAS mklaas@auburn-reporter.com

Looking for guidance, discipline and skills, Auburn’s Keith Nichols found it working closely with a cop. “I love it,” said the 19-year-old

Nichols. “I’ve gained confidence and self-worth.” The South Valley Police Explorer law enforcement program isn’t for every young adult, but it’s a good prerequisite fit for those pursuing a career in public safety. Nichols, an Auburn Riverside High School graduate, wanted something challenging to prepare himself for the next step. He is ready to enlist in the U.S. Coast Guard and ultimately would like

to work for the Secret Service. The Explorer Program, open to career-oriented adults 14 to 21 in good standing, has been a part of the Algona Police Department for three years. The program has been expanding, with Algona sharing resources with Sumner police to become the first Explorer units to combine posts in the state. [ more EXPLORER page 13 ]

Gidget makes the peremptory “woof ” and shuffles up, Frisbee clamped in her canines, eyes locked on yours. Play, that’s what the blackand-white border collie wants, play, and no bones about it. Thing is, Gidget can be, well, a bit fuzzy about what to do with play when it actually beckons, said owner Patricia Cosgrove, director of the White River Valley Museum. When the service-trained collie isn’t meeting or greeting visitors, or offering a toy or sniffing the air for

trending treats, she has serious doggie duties to attend to at the museum — delivering mail to the museum staff, by name. Now, here’s something fresh to add to Gidget’s resume – she’s the spark of Cosgrove’s inspiration for WRVM’s latest photo exhibit: “Best Friends: Antique Images of Animals and Their People,” on display through April 15. “The love of animals connects eras,” Cosgrove said. “You may look at a Victorian photograph and marvel at the long skirts, gloves and [ more EXHIBIT page 6 ]
