Communities in Schools raises $50,000 for mentors Sid White was named the 2012 Tom Murphy Mentor of the Year for his work with James DiLeonardo, a student at Federal Way High School. White has been a mentor with Communities in Schools for about five years. Communities in Schools currently serves 145 children in Federal Way — and there are more on a waiting list for a mentor. To learn more or volunteer, contact Caitlyn Remington at (253) 528-0847. One out of three students will drop out of school or run into trouble. That’s where Communities in Schools of Federal Way plays a critical role. CIS fosters healthy partnerships between adult volunteer mentors and students in elementary through high school. The biggest result: More kids stay in school and learn to succeed in life. CIS hosted its 13th annual fundraising breakfast Feb. 24 at the Christian Faith Center. The fundraiser exceeded a goal of $50,000. Proceeds will help CIS continue to grow its programs, especially in the area of school outreach coordinators. ANDY HOBBS, The Mirror
