City Council unanimously votes to put annexation back on the ballot

James Olson of Citizens for a Better Bothell is excited that voters will get a second chance to help annex 22,000-plus unincorporated Snohomish County residents into the city.

In last November’s general election, the North, East and West of Bothell Annexation (NEWBA) failed to pass, garnering 3,767 “no” votes and 3,359 “yes” votes.

On Feb. 21, the Bothell City Council unanimously approved a resolution to place the NEWBA back on the ballot, this time in the April 17 special election.

Citizens for a Better Bothell sent the city of Bothell a letter Feb. 15 requesting that the City Council take these steps.

The Citizens for a Better Bothell letter reads, in part: “We want to be part of Bothell for its lower taxes and better/higher quality of services. We want to keep our tax dollars local and not spread them throughout the county. We respectfully request that you provide the voters with another opportunity by placing the NEWBA on an upcoming ballot so that we may control our destiny and improve the livability of our neighborhoods.”

“I’ve been with a number of the community action groups in the Bothell area and I’ve been working on this for 10 years, so this is not new. I’m happy that the city’s listening to us,” said Olson, noting that his pro-annexation group put up 13 signs Feb. 22 and two of them were stolen in broad daylight.

“It is unfortunate that the city of Bothell has decided to try for annexation again. It has been five months and the ink hasn’t

even dried yet. Bothell decided at the last minute on the day of the council meeting to add it to the agenda. One could construe that it was done that way so the opposition would not have a chance to voice their opinion.

Seems under-handed to me,” said Bud NcCorchuk of the “no” group, Citizens for Responsible Annexations, which noted in November that they don’t support the closing of fire stations or delayed paramedic response times.

Olson added that in the next few months, his group will talk to voters about the key issues addressed in the new annexation proposal: In addition to lower taxes, the city has committed to staff Fire Station 22 on Damson Road with firefighters/paramedics and keep it open for at least five years (Snohomish County Fire District 1 had previous plans to close the station). The King County Medic One system will continue to provide firefighter and paramedic services.

Added Mayor Mark Lamb: “We have heard from citizens who live in unincorporated Snohomish County that there is a continued desire to join Bothell and benefit from the lower taxes and better services the city has to offer. We also heard that there were some concerns with the original annexation proposal last fall, so we listened to the citizens and made improvements.”

If approved by voters, the annexation would take effect Dec. 31, 2012. The NEWBA consists of 5.6 square miles of unincorporated Snohomish County territory and has an estimated population of 22,283. Bothell’s current population is 33,505.

The “On Track to Success” campaign kicked off Feb. 1, and the Northshore group held gatherings each Wednesday throughout the month to discuss fundraising strategies and check on each other’s progress.

‘Piggyback Bandit’ attended Inglemoor High

Sherwin Shayegan, a 2001 Inglemoor High graduate and former Cascadia Community College student, according to his Facebook page, pleaded guilty on Feb. 1 to two misdemeanor assault charges after “jumping onto the backs” of two high-school soccer players during an Oct. 28 state tournament in Helena, Mont., according to charging papers.

He was arrested then, and this month was fined $730 and handed a 360-day suspended

prison sentence.

Judge Bob Wood signed the court minutes by notifying Shayegan to “not go to any Montana high school events” henceforth.

Shayegan, 28, of Bothell, is 5-foot-8, 240 pounds has been dubbed the “Piggyback Bandit,” because of his antics in Montana, Washington, Oregon, North Dakota and Minnesota.

One Inglemoor administrator preferred not to comment on Shayegan’s time at Inglemoor and whether there were any “piggybacking”

instances then.

He has 16 convictions dating back to 2004 that include multiple counts of criminal trespass, vehicle prowling, resisting arrest and a felony possession of controlled substance without a prescription.

The Reporter left a message for Shayegan on his cell phone Feb. 17 and he returned the call about a minute later. He noted that he did plead guilty to the latest charges, did attend Inglemoor High, but wouldn’t divulge where he’s living now.

“I don’t want to comment” any further, he added.

Charter schools — a gamble our state can’t afford OUR TURN

When it comes to our children’s education, we shouldn’t take risks. Studies across the country have shown charter schools produce mixed results to the detriment of public education. Privatization is not the kind of education reform Washington needs. We must keep the focus on high quality education for all children.

According to a study at Stanford’s politically conservative Hoover Institute, only 17 percent of charters resulted in higher test scores, while 37 percent of scores were significantly worse and the rest stayed the same.

As our state continues to recover from the Great Recession, we are simply not willing to gamble our children’s future on an education model that is twice as likely to widen the achievement gap as it is to close it.

Over the years, the public has consistently agreed with this position by voting down charter schools three separate times, and we ought to respect their judgment.

Instead of experimenting with our children’s future, we should instead look to what has been proven to work and emulate that success.

Everyone agrees that our schools must be innovative and prepare our children to be successful in a global economy. Schools in our existing K-12 system are already leading the way.

Innovative schools work to prepare kids for global careers. The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction has recognized many schools for implementing bold, creative and innovative ideas. The identified schools have high expectations for students and teachers, provide students with an array of educational options, and partner with business and communities.

An emphasis is placed on college preparation and market-demand skills.

Delta High School, which serves students in Kennewick, Richland and Pasco school districts, is a leading example. Delta partners with Columbia Basin College, Washington State University Tri-Cities and Battelle.

Any student can enroll — no tests, aptitude minimums or application screening are required. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) elements are woven into every subject. Students develop academic and personal skills by working in teams and producing industry-grade individual outcomes. Student achievement on state assessments thus far has proven outstanding.

Aviation High School in the Highline School District is the only college preparatory, aviation-themed high school in the Pacific Northwest and aims to become the premier school of choice for STEM in the region.

It opened in 2004 with the inaugural class of freshman and is now at capacity of 400 students, grades 9-12.

Legislation recently voted out by the Senate (Senate Bill 6041) would expand a school to school mentorship program. Leading “Lighthouse” schools such as Delta and Aviation would give technical assistance and advice for other elementary, middle and high schools that are creating their own STEM environments.

We need to be committed to making sure every

school is as bold, creative and innovative as Delta and Aviation. But, we’ll never get there by investing our focus on risky experiments and unproven boondoggles.

Why invest in a bridge to nowhere?

Instead, let’s build on what we know works.

In 2009, Washington passed a massive overhaul of our K-12 education system (House Bill 2261) to make sure every child receives a high quality education. The recent McCleary court decision held that we need to amply fund this and other substantive education reforms. Three years later, we have yet to fulfill this promise.

Now is not the time to redirect our already limited resources away from existing efforts into costly and unpredictable charter schools. Now is the time to focus on funding our existing, substantive reform efforts that show substantive, positive results.

By implementing existing education reforms, we can help every student graduate prepared to compete in today’s global work place. In today’s economy, we can’t afford not to.

Letter writer should have done his homework I am writing in response to the letter from Richard Pelto (Feb. 3 Reporter) regarding the cost of teachers’ pay. The starting gross pay for a teacher without experience in the Northshore School District (NSD), as shown on its Web site, is $34,679. Hardly enough to be rolling in dough with a late model car, is it? The top pay, which requires 16 years of experience plus an additional 90 hours of credits plus a Ph.D., is $65,469. Such additional credit hours are earned outside of school hours without pay. I wonder what the salaries are for Ph.D.s in the business world?

I suggest Mr. Pelto volunteer for a week in any of the schools in various rooms. When parents are unable or refuse to pay for things such as science projects, teachers come up with the money. My daughter has spent literally hundreds of dollars providing arts and crafts so her students will have gifts to take home

for Christmas, Fathers’ Day and Mothers’ Day. She is a special-ed teacher, and special ed these days includes children who are mentally and/or physically challenged, students for whom English is a second language and do not have full comprehension of the written English language and children with behavior disorders.

Each student requires an individualized education plan written by the teacher, and the teacher and any specialists (speech, physical therapy, etc.) must meet before or after the school day with the parents and all must agree to the plan. Some parents don’t show up, not bothering to phone ahead. Others show up 3060 minutes late without an apology.

School ends the third week of June and teachers are back in their rooms in early August preparing lesson plans, sorting books and getting the rooms ready. Those who work during their time off do so out of necessity. Teachers who leave the campus by 4 p.m. can be seen loading papers, dragging carry-alls to continue their work at home. Teachers’ jobs and that of the principal do not start and end with the

school day but continue long after.

In the $10,000-salary days, there were fewer single parents, fewer families with both adults working and a child’s homework was supervised. These days, parents expect the schools to handle everything and you get children with poor social skills, no sense of responsibility, no respect and no manners.

My daughter commutes 21 miles to school as her bountiful teacher’s salary along with that of her husband does allow a budget that includes living in King County.

Next time, do your research, Mr. Pelto before writing disparaging letters regarding the teachers.

Looking into the people we elect As new candidates ponder a run for the next election season, it is worth taking a look at whom we typically elect. Most may think their vote goes for an independent individual, but in fact for the most part, we elect robots. At least we wouldn’t be worse off if we did.

Democrat or Republican, that “individual” you are voting for has to

pledge allegiance to their party first, then hit the campaign trail and convince voters how human they are.

Take Rep. Derek Stanford (D — 1st District) for example. He has and will again pledge allegiance to his party to earn their endorsement — an absolute must for anyone who wants to win. Literally the allegiance requires the candidate to check off a series of boxes regarding a host of issues.

Check the wrong box and you’re out.

In Stanford’s case, not only does he check all the right boxes, he votes purely down his party line ... every time, without fail. Why not then just vote for a robot, or computer program to do the representing for us?

Just program the issues that the party stands for and hit “run.” This could save a lot of time and money, plus a lot of disingenuous conversation on the campaign trail.

Rep. Stanford offers particular weight to this argument because he, by his own definition, is a statistician (he runs analytics for a telecom corporation), and he’ll cite that fact when deliberating policy. It’s nothing more than a mathematical “if-then” for him. If situation-A is presented, run diagnostic through party checklist, and vote for pledged outcome-B. If you are comfortable with this robotic, check-box-determined model, then you like Congress —

Mr. Stanford’s campaign spent more than $148,000 to get him elected in the last round. That’s a lot of cash for a computer program that he could probably write himself.

Maybe because he is an insider now, he will get a discount.

Of course, no election comes without doorbelling, and with the new boundaries of the 1st Legislative District covering a good section of the Inglewood-Finn Hill neighborhood and a swath of the 39th District southeast of Cathcart, Rep. Stanford will be doing his best to convince you that he is more than a mere robot.

But like any good politician (or statistician), Rep. Stanford is reading this and statistically analyzing, from some proven mathematical equation, that voters will simply forget by November. Probably so. Because, in the end, we the voters support the most predictable system — one set of check boxes or the other.

first standing president to do so in nearly two decades. Having heard of the President’s visit early the week before, I reached out to contacts in Washington, D.C., and, after many e-mails, found myself in attendance at this closed-to-the-public event.

I arrived at Boeing just after 7 a.m. Friday morning to join other bleary-eyed journalists four-and-a-half hours prior to the President’s remarks.

Clutching my coffee in one hand and my camera in the other, I waited for an hour out in the cold, a half-hour on the buses and then three hours in the hangar to hear his half-hour speech. It was well worth it.

Mr. Obama spoke on manufacturing and the economy, commending congress for passage of the payroll tax extensions while calling on them to act further and send him tax reform legislation — expected rhetoric from a President running for re-election on the basis of a “do-nothing” congress.

He thanked Boeing employees for their hard work and for production of the 787 Dreamliner, which he heralded as “the plane of the future.”

Through all this, the President seemed particularly entertained by the automatic dimmer technology in the Dreamliner’s windows.

“This is pretty spiffy,” he said to reporters while touring the facility.

It’s comments like this that characterize Mr. Obama’s style.

He speaks with an eloquence that is humorous yet inspiring, casual yet authoritative. He weaves together colloquialisms

with down-to-earth comments, commending Americans for their hard work while reminding them that “we’ve still got a long way to go.”

From his infectious smile to his joking mannerisms, to his invigorating comments, I found myself quickly enthralled by the President’s words.

“America is a place where we can always do something to create new jobs and new opportunities and new manufacturing and new securities for the middle class,” he said.

“That’s why we’re here.”

For many, the President is a symbol of a divided America, but after listening to him speak, I feel he represents a unifying figure, able to precisely command a crowd and instill a sense of nationalistic pride. For those in attendance, watching him wave and then jog down the steps of a Dreamliner prior to speaking is a moment not soon to be forgotten.

For many, the days will have continued to unfold; history will have come and gone. But to me, Feb. 17 will remain one when the President became more than just a figure on a television screen, he became a friendly face, a wide smile and a relatable leader.

Sammamish street named Coach pleads not guilty to attempted child-rape charges after Bothell’s Chapin

A man affiliated with the Northshore Juniors Volleyball program has been charged with attempted rape of a child in the second degree and communication with a minor for immoral purposes, according to King County Superior Court documents.

Ronald Swafford, 59, is being held in King County Jail on $300,000 bail and pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on Feb. 22 at the King County Courthouse, notes King County Prosecuting Attorney Daniel Satterberg’s Web site. A case setting hearing is scheduled on March 6 at the courthouse.

Swafford, who was a coach for the club program for girls ages 14-18, was fired following his Feb. 3 arrest. The program was established in 1999 and contact for the team is through a Bothell mailing address,

Over his career, Chapin also served as a patrol deputy, detective and member of the Seattle FBI’s Fugitive Apprehension Team. In December, the city named Chapin the Sammamish Police Department’s “Officer of the Year” for 2011.

“Stan was a remarkable man,” Sammamish Police Chief Nate Elledge said.

“He really put his heart on the line for the students he helped and the community he served. His passing is a shock to all of us who valued his friendship and admired his professionalism.”

“He always had time for a wave or a few words, even to people he did not know well,” said Bothell’s Thomas, adding that Chapin particularly kept his police car immaculate. “The number of lives he touched in that way was probably not something he was aware of.”

Chapin, who served in the U.S. Army Reserve for 23 years, was also an avid runner. He competed in track at Seattle University, won the 1974 Seattle marathon, and completed the Boston marathon in 1974, 1976 and 1977.

A public viewing for Chapin was held Feb. 5 at Acacia Funeral Home in Lake Forest Park. A public memorial service was held Feb. 7 at Saint Brendan Catholic Church in Bothell.

A memorial fund has been established to benefit the family of officer Chapin.

Donations can be made to the “Stan Chapin Memorial Fund” at any Washington Federal Branch.

“Stan has been an outstanding public servant and great friend to many of you for almost 38 years and we mourn his loss together,” Chief Deputy Steve Strachan, King County Sheriffs Office, wrote in a message to officers.

Stan Chapin had a gift: making everyone in his Bothell neighborhood feel they shared a special friendship with him, recalls Barb Thomas.

Thomas, who lived next door to Chapin and his family for 25 years, anticipated and enjoyed his sense of humor. Whether he was outside washing his cars — sometimes late at night — gardening or running, he acknowledged everyone he met.

“He was a unique man who made an impression on everyone he met. His presence on our street made me feel safe,” Thomas said of Chapin, who was in his 12th year of working as a resource officer at Eastlake High and Inglewood Junior High. He was approaching 40 years in the King County Sheriff ’s Office.

Chapin, 61, passed away Jan. 30 at home of what is believed to be natural causes. He is survived by his wife, Sue, and three children: Christopher, 27; Bethany, 22; and Scott, 17.

Two weeks after the popular officer died, the city of Sammamish approved a resolution, renaming the portion of 233rd Avenue Northeast between Northeast Eighth Street and Eastlake High, Stan Chapin Way. “We wanted to find some way to honor him in addition to what had already been done,” Sammamish mayor Tom Odell said. “We felt that the new entrance to the high school was the perfect place because he was such a fixture to the school for so many years.”

The roadway will act as a second entrance to Eastlake, which currently only has one route in and out of the school on Northeast Fourth Street. The new entrance is part of the Lake Washington School District’s expansion of the high school.

According to Odell, there is also consideration of adding a monument to honor Chapin. He said one concept is placing a boulder with a dedicated plaque in the middle of a new roundabout on the soon-tobe renamed 233rd Avenue Northeast.

“The idea is, many years from now, when the memories have faded, we’ll still have something there,”

A Mukilteo mother of one of Swafford’s former players said that club director Robyn Filimaua sent e-mails to all Northshore Juniors parents following his arrest and notified them that he had been fired.

“It’s horrendous that he did it,” said the mother, who preferred to speak anonymously. “I don’t want it to hurt Northshore (Juniors), because it’s a great club.”

Filimaua was not available for comment at press time.

After believing that he was communicating through a series of e-mails with a 13-year-old girl — who was actually a Seattle police detective conducting an undercover operation targeting people involved in the sexual exploitation of children — Swafford drove to a meeting location in Seattle and was arrested on Feb. 3.

Ann Cooley Vincent Ann Cooley Vincent left us on Feb. 17, 2012, at the age of 82.

She was born in Evanston, Ill., on Sept. 7, 1930.

She graduated from Wheaton High school and attended Knox College.

Ann worked as a model, for Charles Stevens Department store in Chicago and at her dad’s Inland Newspaper Representatives agency.

She was a secretary, travel agent and volunteer at Youth Eastside Services and the Bellevue Police Department.

She married Dr. Lee S. Vincent on July 15, 1954.

She loved to travel and visited many beautiful places throughout the South Pacific and Europe.

She was an impeccable hostess and cook. She loved to share her home-baked cookies and other goodies with friends, family and people she met on her travels. She enjoyed fishing and was known to catch King salmon using gumdrops for luck.

She was a member of Lochmoor garden club.

She was full of life and if she had an opinion she wasn’t afraid to voice it. She had an incredible inner strength and sense of humor, and loved to instigate pranks. Ann was known for her love of flowers, hummingbirds and her creative flair.

She was loved by all who knew her, and will forever be missed. She is survived by her husband Lee; her son Steve; daughter Lori (Missy) Maxim and her husband Glen; daughter Jane Vincent-Hulsey and her husband Erik; and grandchildren Sean, Rose and Heino.

Donations can be made in her name to Youth Eastside Services in Bellevue.

Mary Louise Anderson Bosley died on February 15, 2012 at Palos Verdes Retirement Center in Peoria, Arizona.

Known to family and friends as Mary Lou or ML, Mrs. Bosley was born in Seattle on August 16, 1925 to Wilbert Andell and Beatrice Eve Graham Anderson. She moved to Bothell as a young child, graduating from Bothell HS in 1943. After attending WA State College for two years, she married George Vaughn Bosley at the Methodist Church in Bothell on June 22, 1945. The newlywed couple moved to Corpus Christi, TX while George completed his Navy service. At the end of the war, the couple returned to Bothell and raised a family. In retirement she enjoyed living in CA, AZ, WA, CO, & TX. ML is survived by her husband George, daughter Judith, son Dennis, daughter-in-law Jacqueline, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She will be remembered as a fantastic cook and gardener who made the tastiest homemade raspberry jam in the world. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Dale Lee

Dale Lee was born on March 22, 1931, and with calmness and peace died on February 16, 2012, with his youngest daughter at his side.

Dale was proud to be of Norwegian descent.

His father Matt Lee (Mathias Peder Johannes Silvertsen Lisetter) emigrated from Norway to Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1905, and later to North Dakota where he married Emma Angleshaug who was born of Norwegian parents in North Dakota.

They later moved to Ballard, Washington.

His brother Wally, and sisters Doris and Arlene preceded him in death, along with his fiance of thirty years, Marylee Kellenburger, whom he first met delivering newspapers as a young boy. He is survived by his brother Vernon, his ten children, and many grandchildren.

Dale was known to everyone he met as “Handsome Dale.” His mail carrier would get a chuckle when delivering his mail, and would tease Dale about it. Dale was a very hard worker, he learned the construction business from his father, owned a Standard Oil franchise for many years, raised mink, flew airplanes, managed Lazy Wheels mobile home park in Bothell where he made many friends.

He enjoyed bowling, playing basketball, and salmon fishing.

He was a genuine, kind, sincere gentleman. He was very loving, and had what really matters; the love of his family and friends. “You’ve done your job well Dad.We are all so proud of you and have a piece of you in our hearts that will live on. Thank you for being you.”

For Bothell High boys’ basketball head coach Ron Bollinger, watching his team celebrate on the court after last Friday’s 63-54 winner-to-state victory over No. 6 Olympia was a source of vindication.

The Cougars, as they had done many times already this season, rallied from an early deficit to win and earn the program’s first berth in 15 years into the Hardwood Classic, the 4A state basketball tournament, this weekend at the Tacoma Dome.

The last time the Cougars made the big dance, the team’s current players were infants, and Bollinger had just began his long tenure as coach.

“We just happen to play in the best league in the state and only get the two, maybe three berths,” Bollinger said. “With the amount of good teams in Kingco, it’s very difficult to get there. It’s very gratifying to see these kids work hard all year long and get better, get in a position to get there, and then do it.”

The Cougars (17-9),

who scored just two points in the first six minutes of play and trailed 15-9 after the first quarter, leaned on standout guards Zach LaVine and Perrion Callandret.

The pair scored 26 and 17 points respectively in the win, and led the Cougar charge in the second quarter as the team opened up a 12-2 run to take the lead for good. LaVine also hauled in 12 rebounds for a big double-double.

For the game, LaVine went nine of 15 from the field and also sunk all seven of his free throw attempts.

With Olympia threatening down the stretch, the Cougars were masterful from the line, shooting 90 percent, and 16 of 20 for the game (80 percent).

Bollinger described his team’s road to state as a maturation process, having started the year with a lot of hype, ranked No. 2 with a couple of talented stars in LaVine and Callandret, as well as three other impact players brand new to the program.

After suffering a 67-54 loss to Issaquah in the Kingco tournament on Feb. 10, Bollinger’s young team peaked at the right time and

Inglemoor’s Tanaka, Bothell’s Hultgren set the bar high for future gymnasts

With their final performances at the 4A state meet a couple weeks ago on February 18 at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall, two of the Kingco league’s top gymnasts ended their prep gymnastics careers.

Bothell’s Raynie Hultgren and Inglemoor’s Mina Tanaka may have worn different high school leotards when they competed, but outside of the gym, they’re best of friends, perform for the same club – Northwest Aerials – and cherished their time competing at the high school level.

TANAKA: LEADING BY EXAMPLE

Unlike her start in the sport, Viking senior Tanaka turned into a leader for her team in her phenomenal senior year.

She began at the age of three, following her older sisters into the gym at Northwest Aerials in Kirkland.

As she progressed through the ranks, it was evident that Tanaka’s ability was something special among her peers. She tied for fourth place in the state for all-around as a sophomore, a feat she matched this year with the same girl – Todd Beamer’s Sam West – and also made the Saturday finals in two events, the bars and beam.

Starting out on the beam, she suffered a nasty fall towards the end of her routine to place eighth, but she rebounded nicely later in the afternoon on the bars, scoring 9.125 to place fourth and earn a medal.

“I’ve gotten a lot better at bars this year, I’ve grown confidence in it, definitely,” said Tanaka, adding that at state was the only time all year she fell on the beam. “It was kind of a bummer, but I got over it.

I was moving onto bars, so I had to clear my mind.”

Inglemoor coach Matt Watson marveled at Tanaka’s

ability to refocus, noting that she has had difficulty with the event in the past.

“She pushed herself, and you could see it with the bars event that she always struggles with – she nailed her bars routine,” Watson said. “It’s great to see how far she’s come.”

Tanaka, who may be feeling the burnout from a long and successful gymnastics career so far, said she is not looking to do gymnastics in college, but plans on staying with the sport she loves.

“I want to move on, but I was thinking about coaching,” said Tanaka, who, like Hultgren, is looking to pursue a career in nursing. “Coaching high school gym in the future would be really fun for me.”

Watson, who coaches with Eastside Gymnastics Academy in Woodinville, said that Tanaka has been a leader by example for the younger Vikings on the other team, and set the bar high for the program’s future.

“Compared to how she was as a sophomore, she came back and was such a big leader,” he said. “A lot of times she’d step in and help coach the other girls, and push them to do their best. She’s really inspirational.”

HULTGREN: VAULTING TO THE TOP

Bothell’s Hultgren, like many young gymnasts, got her start in the sport because her parents wanted a more controlled environment for acrobatics than the family home.

“My parents put me in gymnastics because I’d climb on the windowsill in the bedroom and do flips onto the bed,” recalled Hultgren, who started at the age of four and began competing for Northwest Aerials at age six.

While the coaches at many clubs discourage their athletes from participating at the high school level, Hultgren and

Grand Opening March 7 STAHVEE Tanaka agreed that they their club was generally supportive.

“The (coaches) are all for me enjoying high school,” Hultgren said. “They’re really flexible and understanding.”

Given the green light, Hultgren made the most of her high school prep career. After making the state meet last year, the vault specialist shined this year, placing fourth during the Friday prelims at the state meet with a near-perfect 9.5, and ended up taking sixth in the finals with a 9.225, her highest individual finish in Tacoma.

“I think Saturday could have gone better with vault, but my body was hurting really bad,” she admitted.

But Hultgren is far from done in her gymnastics career.

In fact, just last weekend she participated in the “Battle in Seattle” meet at the Washington State Convention Center.

The Bothell standout ended up winning the all-around and coming home with a special piece of hardware.

“It was (sponsored by) Harley-Davidson, and if you win all-around, they give you a leather jacket,” Hultgren beamed. “It went really well.”

While she does plan to continue her gym career in college while studying nursing, Hultgren said that the best memories from her time with the Cougar gymnastics team did not take place on the beam, vault, bars or floor.

“Staying at the hotels for state – we always have lots of fun, we decorate our coaches room,” described Hultgren when asked about her most enjoyable high school gymnastics experience. “I got to know the girls on the (Bothell) team really well, it kinda makes it like a family inside school.”

Bothell’s Davidson third at state wrestling, two Viks place

Bothell’s Brandon Davidson, now in his junior year, is inching closer and closer to his goal of become a state champion like his brother Justin, who turned the trick in 2003 while wrestling for the Cougars.

The younger Davidson placed fifth last year, and went 5-1 this year at the Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome to place third in the state at the 152-pound weight class.

In the finals, he defeated Bethel’s Trevor Anderson in a thrilling match, 4-3.

Anderson, who had won four straight matches to reach the finals against Davidson, was up early 1-0 before Davidson turned the tide, scoring a takedown and taking a 3-1 lead into the third period.

With 30 seconds left, Davidson got taken down to the mat to tie the score at 3-3, which caused the elder Davidson and head coach Scott LaBrash to get up off of their mat-side chairs.

Davidson added, “The match I did lose earlier was because I was too aggressive, getting out of position, and giving up easy points.”

After a fifth and now a third-place performance on the state’s biggest stage

for high school wrestling, it appears that the 152-pounder will have a great chance to follow in Justin’s footsteps and become one of the rare pairs of brothers that own state wrestling titles.

LaBrash won’t have it any other way.

“We have one more year to go after that state title, and I truly think he has a shot at it,” he said. “To go from fifth to third, we’re climbing. That’s the direction you want to go.”

Though the Inglemoor wrestling team managed just two eighth-place finishes this year at the Mat Classic by juniors Gabe Seward, wresting at 138, at Josh Koukal, at 195, head coach Paul Schulfer said the real story was the big picture.

He took five Vikings to the Dome this year, and each of this athletes won a match, the first time that has happened in the seven years he has been with the program.

“That’s amazing… I’ve never seen that before,” said Schulfer on the fact that no Viking went two-and-out.

“Our two placers, Josh and Gabe, are both juniors, they’re coming back next year. I know they were hoping for a little better than eighth, but they’re happy that they placed, and now the bar is set for next year.”

The road to a medal was not easy for the Vikings.

Both Seward and Koukal were in the consolation bracket on Friday night and needed to win to stay alive in the tournament, and both came through by a single point – Seward with a 5-4 win over Aron Set-Heit of Todd Beamer, and Koukal with a 3-2 win over Olympia’s Tanner Hartsoch.

On Friday, sophomore Mitchell Barker won a consolation match against Kevin Bishop of Mount Rainier, 9-5, and seniors Sam Gastineau and Ben Carson, wrestling for a final time in a Viking uniform, both won a match, with Gastineau pinning Auburn’s Stephen Heinze in 5 minutes, 8 seconds, and Carson beating Mason Ju of Mead, 5-3, to advance to the quarterfinals of the 220-pound bracket before losing twice.

“They did well and were happy to get here, the matches they lost were all pretty close – they were definitely hanging in there,” said Schulfer on Gastineau an Carson. “They had great seasons.”

Tours are conducted by the staff, such as the free 60-minute “Muddy Boots” tour through the campus wetlands, and other interactive tours for all ages. The staff works with students in the environmental science classes offered on campus to take water samples, make observations and sometimes help with planting.

“It’s a great opportunity,” Guerrero said. “Students come right out of the campus and into the wetlands and start their studying… just steps away from the classroom.”

Guerrero explained the importance of awareness of the water drainage system.

Oil is not changed on campus, cars are not washed and pesticides are not used on the plants because all

of that may eventually end up in North Creek. Salmon have returned to this section of North Creek since the restoration. Cascadia is the first college in the nation, UWB is the second university in the nation and first in the state, to be certified “salmon-safe” for the preservation and protection of endangered salmon.

This is in part due to the water filtration system that separates contaminants from the water that will ultimately flow out to the creek.

Putting so many sustainability methods to use is not cheap. Though much of it pays for itself and earns savings to go back to the college, it costs about $145,000 a year to keep the various green systems

running in the wetlands.

Many would argue it is a small price to pay for the preservation of precious resources.

With Earth Day coming up April 22, why not turn over a new leaf and think of ways to decrease your carbon footprint? The campus will be celebrating Earth Day on April 19. Take a tour of the campus and see first-hand how all of the aforementioned systems combine to make UWB/ CCC a one-of-a-kind campus. When we hear the phrase “Go Green,” we usually think of the little things such as planting a tree, composting or using “green certified” products. We try to be mindful of the dayto-day activities that have an effect on the environment, like recycling, washing our cars in the driveway or turning the lights off when we leave the room.

But what if each of us had the power to embrace environmental friendliness on an even larger scale?

At the University of Washington, Bothell (UWB) and Cascadia Community College (CCC) campus, all of these ideas and more have come together to form a “green system” unique to any other college campus in the country. Through the implementation of environmentally productive programs and the latest technology, the facility staff on campus and their partners are making our corner of the world a better place, and have earned the school the reputation of a “green campus.”

When it comes to the sustainability of a large area, what’s on the inside matters just as much as what happens outside.

Technology has played a pivotal role in decreasing the campus’ carbon footprint from the inside out.

For instance, the florescent lights in the classrooms are motion activated and the lights in the library dim based on the amount of light coming from outside.

The HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system is computerized in “smart-buildings” where a computer sustains the ideal temperature based on the outdoor climate. UWB/ CCC’s partnership with the organization ESCO (Energy Service Company) has given them access to a Web site known as Building Dashboard, which helps them monitor and analyze their use of energy.

“When you know what you use, you tend to try and use less,” Assistant Vice Chancellor Tony Guerrero said. “(The money saved in energy costs) goes back

to the college, back to the university, in order to…focus on the students, instead of paying it to PSE (Puget Sound Energy).”

The use of a computerized system continues outside, as well. The campus irrigation system monitors the weather stations to know when it is necessary to turn on the sprinklers.

Solar panels and electric car chargers are located in the parking garages on campus, paid for with the savings from other conservation projects, such as garage lighting. The removal of 502 light fixtures in 2005 and the installation of florescent lights in the parking garages paid for itself in only nine months.

Though technology has allowed for great advances in the campus sustainability measures, there are still some “old school” ideas being put to use.

Whether you’re on campus or at home, composting is an easy but effective step toward green living.

At UWB/CCC, there are compost bins for students to use located all over campus. The multiple food sources such as campus cafes and Subway all participate in contributing their coffee grounds and food scraps. The collections are rounded up and put into composting worm bins to be turned into mulch to use on campus. It also makes a nice compost tea to water plants.

The campus’ unusual weeding method has sparked news attention before. Goats, 60 or more of them, can demolish a 10-foot-tall blackberry bush in five days. Rather than using harsh weed killers or wasting time and resources, the goats are let loose on the invasive shrubs as a completely natural way to maintain the campus.

Goats are not the only four-legged animals on the property. Deer, coyotes and other wildlife roam the 58-acre wetland on campus, making it the largest wetland restoration in the Pacific Northwest.

What makes this restoration so remarkable is not only its size, but also the amount of work that goes into its maintenance each day. The full- and part-time staff are out working 5,300 hours a year and their job is never done. They remove non-native plants and replant new trees for every
