Zach Sweester has had his sights set on the sky since he was a 4th grader. More than eight years ago Sweester took a ride in a neighbor’s private plane from Renton to Boeing Field. Ever since that day, Sweester has been hooked.
“I knew right then I was definitely going to stay with it,” said Sweester, a junior at Interlake High School. “There’s something about flying; I just liked being off the ground. It was kind of a free feeling.” Sweester has followed through on his nearly life-long obsession with flight, earning his sport pilot license

Dec. 23 on his 17th birthday. Sweester is now allowed to fly a powered parachute, which is essentially a parachute that carries a motorized, one-seated, three-wheeled machine. These planes fly approximately 30 miles an hour, and a full tank of gas allows a pilot to stay in the air for about three hours. The Bellevue School Board voted Feb. 17 to contact Susan Enfield to see if she is interesting in participating in an accelerated interview process to determine if she would be a good fit as district superintendent. Board President Paul Mills was authorized to contact Enfield and determine as quickly as possible if she was interested. While spokeswoman Jacque Coe did not elaborate on Enfield’s response, she said that the candidate “has always indicated she would be open to an interview process with Bellevue.” The next step took place on Thursday, after the Bellevue Reporter’s deadline, where, at a public meeting, the board Susan Enfield updated its list of desired characteristics based on the input it received from community forums and develop a defined interview process for Enfield and other candidates. Check www.bellevuereporter.com to learn more. While still considering other candidates, the board is racing to determine if Enfield, now interim superintendent in the Seattle School District, would be a good fit for the district. She was the No. 2 choice for Bellevue superintendent three years ago when the board chose Amalia Cudeiro. Cudeiro resigned at the end of January, citing family issues. Enfield is a finalist for superintendent of the Highline School District, with officials there set to announce their choice on March 1. In addition to voting 3-1-1 to contact Enfield, the board agreed on the following provisions on Feb. 17: ■ The search process will include an updated evaluation criteria based on the previous two weeks’ community input; ■ The interview process will include the school board, Bellevue Education Association (BEA), district administration and the public; and ■ If after that process the board feels it has a strong feeling from what took place, it may extend an offer to a candidate. The board also agreed to more clearly define and flesh out the above plan by Feb. 27.
