The biggest little rock show on the island is coming to the Oak Harbor Senior Center on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11 & 12. Hours are 9 am–5 pm on Saturday and 9 am–4 pm on Sunday. Members of the Whidbey Island Gem Club have been cutting, grinding, polishing and sanding, as they get ready for the 47th Annual Sweetheart of Gems Show. This event showcases collections of jewelry and other artifacts members have created. There will be vendors from all over the Pacific Northwest in attendance. Demonstrations will take place throughout both days with hourly door prizes. The annual show is a great opportunity to find a piece of beautiful handcrafted jewelry or raw material to make your own. Free parking and free admission. Lapidary is the art and skill of working with rocks. Daily demonstrations will include Silver Smithing, Cabbing and Intarsia, Stone Bead Making, Wire Wrapping, Knapping and Primitive Tools. Members of the Thursday Wire Wrap class take cabs, crystals, polished stones or even arrowheads and turn them into beautiful jewelry with this twisted art form. The Puget Sound Knappers, part of the Whidbey Island Gem Club, will demonstrate knapping. Knapping is the art of making arrowheads for primitive weapons such as spears, arrows, bows and knives. The Whidbey Island Gem Club came into existence in 1938. Originally part of the Holland Happening celebrations, the Sweetheart of Gems Show has been held at the Oak Harbor Senior Center for the past 25 years. Besides weekly meetings, members of the Whidbey Island Gem Club enjoy field trips in search of treasures. A couple of favorite areas are Saddle Mountain, and east of the mountains where petrified wood and opalite can be found. In Central Oregon, members like to go to Glass Buttes, Prineville and Madras. A little closer to home in the Big Lake area is Walker Valley and Mt. Higgens. This is where amethyst, rhodonite and agates can be found. “Every rock is different.” Said Dick James. “You can find beautiful rocks on the beaches of Whidbey Island. Jade, jasper, fossils and ivory to name a few.” The Whidbey Island Gem Club meets the first Wednesday of each month at 7 pm at the Oak Harbor Senior Center. There is a general meeting of the membership followed by door prizes, a silent auction, coffee and cookies and a program. Interested and potential members ages 8 to 100+ are invited to attend. Contact Chip Batcheller at 679-9397. The Wire Wrap group meets Thursdays at 7 pm at the Center. New people welcome. Create unique jewelry. A cab and the wire needed for your first project will be provided. May purchase cabs and wire for future projects. Contact Dick James at 675-9396. The Puget Sound Knappers meet Wednesdays from 9 am–1 pm at a member’s home. Contact Chip Batcheller at 679-9397. The Lapidary shop is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 am–11 am.
