New ventilation system installed

fter a couple of delays with scheduling, the long awaited new ventilation system was installed the week of November 7 – 12. Regularly scheduled classes and activities were cancelled but the meal site was open for service. The new unit replaces the original system from when the Oak Harbor Senior Center was built in 1986. Everyone’s patience and understanding is appreciated as adjustments are made to the thermostats

Since 1986 when the Oak Harbor Senior Center opened its doors, lifelong learning experiences and healthy aging have been our goals. Expand your horizons with trips, classes and activities. The Center has been a great asset to the 50-Plus Crowd of North Whidbey and Island County residents and their families. Membership is $30 per year (only $2.50 a month) and is renewed on an annual basis from the original date of issue. Members receive a discount on trips and classes. The Travel Brochure is mailed only to current members. All monies collected from memberships are used exclusively for the support of the Senior Center’s funding requirements, both operational and capitol. This is your Senior Center. Thank you for your support. It has often been said that a ‘Man’s house is his castle’. In reality we know it as the ‘Man Cave’. Every home has one. After twenty-five years the Man Cave (Pool Room) at the Oak Harbor Senior Center got a little sprucing up. After the Pool Guys got the two pool tables re-greened and fixed up, it seemed the next step was the whole room. The transformation took place over the three day Veteran’s Day weekend. The Center was closed for carpet cleaning and the final ventilation installation. No programs or activities were scheduled. There was a little grumbling from the Pool Guys because the Center had already been closed for several days during the ventilation installation earlier in the week which meant NO POOL. Monday morning arrived and the Pool Guys were greeted with the re-vamped Pool Room. The room was painted by high school volunteers and decorated by Pat Gardner. The OH Senior Center Foundation The group of guys at the paid college advanced placement test costs left agree, the new digs are for the students performing the service. As doggone nice, with new cue racks and lots of space to they say in Louisiana…the room looks “mo’ play and observe the game. betta.” Gotta love the new group picture that hangs on the freshly painted wall!

ESL TUTORS NEEDED Your help, energy, and assistance, is needed as a volunteer for English as a Second Language (ESL). Must be able to commit to a minimum of three hours a week in two sessions. Program is sponsored through the Seattle ProLitercy Council which was known as The Laubach Society. Although well established all across America and Canada there are no programs on Whidbey. There is tutor training and certification available for volunteer tutors. If you’re interested in learning more, or think you might like to help out a non English speaking person on a one-on-one basis, contact Kirby Vickery at 480-580-0482, email vickorus@netscape.com or come to the presentation at the Oak Harbor Senior Center on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 10 am in the Arts and Crafts Room. RSVP by calling 279-4580.

Once in motion, the ventilation system installation went smoothly. The temperature in the Senior Center will be warmer this winter, and should be easier to regulate

There was clutter which made it tough to maneuver those cues when lining up a tough shot. Dart games had to wait for clearance.
