520 bridge tolls to start Dec. 29 BY NAT LEVY nlevy@bellevuereporter.com

It’s finally official: You’ll begin paying a toll to cross the SR 520 floating bridge starting 5 a.m. Dec. 29. The Washington State Department of Transportation is urging travelers to get ready by setting up a Good To Go transponder account. “Tolling is helping Washington move

forward with critical transportation investments and will finance ongoing and future work to replace the vulnerable SR 520 floating bridge and corridor,” said Washington Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond. The tolls will provide $1 billion to fund construction of the bridge pontoons in Grays Harbor, and floating bridge construction and improvements on the Eastside, which already are under way. Starting tolling before the new bridge is built is

keeping financing costs down, Hammond said. Tolls will vary by time of day, with peak hours between 7-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m. having the highest rate at $3.50 for anyone with a Good to Go transponder. Those without transponders will receive bills in the mail for the toll amount, plus a $1.50 charge. State officials say the toll system’s components have been tested and retested since summer to ensure they can collect data at

highway speeds and create transactions for the more than 100,000 vehicles that cross the bridge daily. WSDOT also brought in national tolling experts to review the system, and expanded its customer service support. Since February, the Good To Go call center has activated more than 120,000 new [ more TOLLS page 4 ]

In less than two year’s time, Bellevue will be down to two post offices. The Bellevue Way and Midlakes retail branches will close by mid 2013, and those operations will be moved to a new facility in downtown Bellevue, representatives from the United States Postal Service announced Monday evening. Russel Rainey, a real estate specialist for USPS’ Western Facilities Office said the changes are part of a national campaign to close offices to save $2.1 billion annually for the government agency. Bellevue’s Crossroads branch will remain unaffected, Rainey said. “Due to the challenging economic times we all live in, the Post Service finds itself needing to close some offices and consolidate others,” Rainey said. USPS decided in September to close or consolidate as many as 677 post offices throughout the country, with approximately 250 set for full closure. As a result of this, [ more POST OFFICE page 4 ]
