Gelder W and Tibbs: Where they stand Part 1 in our series on North Kitsap candidates in the Nov. 8 election By RICHARD WALKER rwalker@northkitsapherald.com

POULSBO — County Commission candidate Rob Gelder is endorsed by the Home Builders Association of Kitsap County’s Affordable Housing Council. Candidate Chris Tibbs is endorsed by the Kitsap County Association of Realtors. They served together on the county Citizens Budget Committee. Both believe charter government may be in the county’s future. Both believe county government must prioritize its services, but their paths diverge on what those priorities should be. They are running in the Nov. 8 election for the right to serve the one year remaining in the term, vacated earlier this year by Steve Bauer, who resigned. Commissioners earn $109,907 per year. They approve laws, set policies, and manage a $325 million budget. Here’s a look at the candidates, their take on the status of the county, and what they would do if elected.

ith 150 friends and family members quietly looking upward into a warm, cloudless sky Saturday, 11 skydivers jumped in memory of Zachary Victor Fogle during an evening memorial service at Skydive Kapowsin, near Shelton. During the sunset dive from 13,000 feet, Fogle’s ashes were released into the air by his father, Douglas Fogle, as Zachary’s final dive for all to see and honor. The tribute was widely thought by attendees to be equal to the nature of Fogle’s determination to live life to its fullest, concluding in the great adventure he loved. Fogle, 27, of Kingston died July 30 after his parachute failed to open during an 18,000-foot dive at the annual Lost Prairie Skydiving Boogie, near Marion, Mont. Investigators ruled the death accidental. Just over a month later, standing on the tarmac below and surrounded by loved ones, Zachary’s mother was deeply moved and relieved by the site of her son’s ashes being released, knowing at that moment her son was finally released from the physical constraints of the world. POULSBO — While there are dozens of parks and miles of hiking and biking trails in North Kitsap, it’s a guessing game as to where they connect. One organization is leading the effort to create a series of connected trails — in neighborhoods, along shorelines, school routes and existing regional trails — to “connect our community.” The North Kitsap Trail Association, working with land developer Olympic Property Group, has presented the String of Pearls trail plan to Kitsap County, where is it currently up for review. The 7,000 acres the association and its partners hope to develop is owned by Olympic Property Group, a Pope Resources company, according to trails association President John Willett. He said it was Olympic Property Group President Jon Rose who proposed the North Kitsap trail network
