KINGSTON — Kathy Melseth sits with almost every client for five minutes before helping them find

food for the week at ShareNet’s food bank. “Some people just come in for a hug ... they don’t have anyone else, she said.

Melseth is the food bank’s manager, and said her biggest concern are the people she isn’t seeing. “If you think you should be here, you should be here, Melseth said. The number of working families

KINGSTON — Come Nov. 8, Kingston will have a new port commissioner. Some 4,069 ballots were mailed to Kingston Port District voters for the general election, according to the Kitsap County Auditor Elections Office. Ballots can be dropped into the 24-hour box at Poulsbo Fire Station, 911 NE Liberty Road, Poulsbo, until 8 p.m. Nov. 8. Mailed ballots must be postmarked Nov. 8. In the Aug. 16 primary, Walt Elliott received 323 votes, Jerry Kirchner received 231, and Tom Coultas received 160. Elliott and Kirschner — one an accomplished Navy captain with long volunteer credentials, the other an accomplished corporate manager building his local volunteer credentials — spent the campaign trying to differentiate themselves from one another. Their differences on several issues were subtle. Their work backgrounds gave the clearest idea of how they would do the job of commissioner if elected. See ELECTION, Page 6

LITTLE BOSTON — Dennis Jones led the Head Start preschoolers, wearing cedar headdresses and hats, onto the

floor. The children’s performance proved to be more than entertainment; it confirmed the importance of building a new preschool in Little Boston. As Jones drummed, the 3and 4-year-olds sang a greeting song in the S’Klallam language, then sang and danced a song honoring the killer whale. They raised their hands in thanks, in the traditional way. The Port Gamble S’Klallam

PORT GAMBLE — Cascade Land Conservancy has formed a “formidable partnership with Pope Resources and several agencies and organizations to acquire and preserve 7,000 acres of Pope Resources land in North Kitsap. The conservancy has 18 months to identify its funding sources to buy the land and 1.8 miles of shoreline from Olympic Property Group, Pope’s real estate arm. “This can lead this region [and is] among the most important projects to save Puget Sound, conservancy President Gene Duvernoy said. “It may not be the most robust economy, but this is the time to do it. David Nunes, president and CEO of Pope Resources, said the option agreement with the conservancy is flexible — the conservancy is not locked into a price, which will be determined by land appraisers.
