Utility rates eclipse all at voters’ forum

Bayview goes to the dogs

BY BRIAN KELLY South Whidbey Record

LANGLEY — Candidates hoping to get the nod from Langley voters tugged at the thorn that’s long troubled both businesses and residents alike — the city’s water and sewer rates — at a forum Monday evening. Though Thomas Gill has made the city’s rate structure a key part of his campaign, others at the forum also said they supported changing Langley’s water and sewer fees. It was Gill, a candidate for Position 4 on the Langley City Council, who again led the way, however. Many in Langley feel the rate SEE FORUM, A2

Mutt Strut had probably its biggest year ever, with 50 entrants, as costumed canines and their owners packed the courtyard near the Bayview Cash Store for the sixth annual Mutt Strut on Saturday. Above, Ruby Sheldon, dressed as Slinky Dog, watches the other contestants as she waits with her dog Beetee, a Yorkie in a Ms. Potato Head costume. Natasha Sheldon, dressed as Jessie to com-

plete the “Toy Story” theme, won the best owner and dog costume category. In other categories, Rocky, an Australian shepherd mix owned by Becca Blackman, won for best trick. Natalie and Lupine, a bulldog and corgi team decked out as beauty contestants, owned by Maya Kilman, won for best costume. And best celebrity costume went to Miley, a rat ter-

rier dressed as “Miley Hilton,” owned by Megan Miller. At top left, Gus, a Lab mix owned by Chris Lundin, is dressed as a “Labra Lion.” At top center is Bruno, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dressed like a mailman and owned by Madden Gillespi. At top right is Natalie the bulldog, who won the best costume award with Lupine the corgi.

CLINTON — Money and park use are the main issues for the Clinton candidates for the South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District board. Both Joel Gerlach, 45, and Jean Streitler, 42, know the parks district is in a bind financially. Property values are down, and so are revenues for the parks. Both Gerlach and Streitler are frequent South Whidbey parks users. In an early display of prudence, the candidates Joel Gerlach have avoided spending on a campaign, preferring to let their peers and community elect them to the four-year term based on name and deeds. What separates them is how they see parks being used. They are on opposite sides of the football — or is it fútbol? Gerlach is an avid Jean Streitler SEE PARKS, A2
