“
A crucial event in the birth of a contemporary American theatre.”
-THE VILLAGE VOICE
Edward Albee’s masterwork is a three act drama, revealing two couples at an alcohol-soaked after-party: Married middle aged couple, George and Martha, locked in a psychological battle, and ther unwitting guests, Nick and Honey.
The twisted, cruel and often funny games night that ensues is fueled by the deeply entrenched grief and rage held by both George and Martha as they come face to face with the illusions and realities of their twenty three year marriage.
In the end, the secret fantasy in which the troubled couple have taken refuge is exposed, revealing the disapointing mess they have made of their life together.
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Edward Albee (1928-2016) was born on March 12, 1928, and began writing plays 30 years later. His plays include The Zoo Story (1958), The American Dream (1960), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (196162, Tony Award), Tiny Alice (1964), A Delicate Balance (1966, Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award), All Over (1971), Seascape (1974, Pulitzer Prize), The Lady From Dubuque (1977-78), The Man Who Had Three Arms (1981), Finding The Sun (1982), Marriage Play (1986-87), Three Tall Women (1991, Pulitzer Prize), Fragments (1993), The Play About The Baby (1997), The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? (2000, 2002, Tony Award), Occupant (2001), Peter and Jerry: Act 1, Homelife; Act 2, The Zoo Story (2004), and Me, Myself and I (2007).
He was a member of the Dramatists Guild Council and President of The Edward F. Albee Foundation. Mr. Albee was awarded the Gold Medal in Drama from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 1980, and in 1996 received the Kennedy Center Honors and the National Medal of Arts. In 2005 he was awarded the special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement.
When this play premiered, one of the reviews said:
“It only should be seen by dirty minded women” -Albee said that it added a year to it’s run in New York.
Because of its obscenities, Nova Scotia banned the film version of Virginia Woolf from all movie theatres in the province.
It was dangerous.
Edward Albee believed that no matter how painful it can be - the experience of being fully alive is extraordinary.
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? comes from that conviction.
It’s a play about people whose lives aren’t what they’d imagined or hoped for.
People who can’t cope without booze, psychological violence and illusion. The illusion that they’re happy, that they’ve got it together, and in George and Martha’s case the agreed upon illusion they’ve nurtured for years.
Albee believed that refusing to face reality fully is the most dangerous thing we can do.
At its core, this play is about grief: the grief of failed ambition, and of discovering that the world does not come close to keeping its promises.
Albee responded to that moment by holding up a brutal broken mirror — exposing the lies beneath marriages, institutions, and the American Dream itself.
We are under illusions. To shield ourselves from reality, we pretend, lie, and cover up — even as those things eat away at our relationships and our sense of truth.
The play is a kind of ritual complete with booze, sex, sacrifice and revelation. Maybe George and Martha have repeated this night again and again, but tonight they go further, way further, making rebirth a possibility.
It’s a great love story.
It’s also f*cking funny.
This is not a play for escapism. It’s a theatre event meant to disturb, surprise, unsettle, and connect us. My hope is that the audience sees themselves here and recognizes something.
Tonight, things change. The illusions are gone. What’s left is truth —and the terrifying, naked, extraordinary experience of being alive.
Ann-Marie Kerr Director
Welcome to Neptune Theatre and to today’s performance of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. It has been my hope to program this play as part of our season since I got the job of Artistic Director and I am so very happy that it has now become a reality.
Power. Deception. Lust. A perfect storm of emotions for some after-dinner drinks, wouldn’t you say? Edward Albee’s seminal work Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, directed by Ann-Marie Kerr, is like watching an acting masterclass in the most chaotic, yet breathtaking, way possible. Our epic cast bring these iconic characters to the Fountain Hall stage in this highly-anticipated production.
Grab a stiff drink and settle in, because this is a story you won’t soon forget.
In the final moments of the play, where the layers of humour and deception have been stripped away lies the essence of Albee’s play: fear.
Everything you are about to witness over three intense acts has been an attempt to exert power because without that what’s left? Fear of the loneliness and obscurity that haunts both George and Martha’s lives. Fear for Nick and Honey that they’ll one day become George and Martha. And so the bravado and bottle smashing and sexual advances and drinking are all there to cover up their fear.
We get perfect glimpses at these vulnerable moments, and we hope will leave an indelible mark on you, our audience members.
Congratulations to the entire creative team, cast, crew and technicians. It’s a joy to see such a classic play come vividly, unapologetically to life.
There’s more to come this season. We are not done yet. We have also unveiled the 2026-27 Season line-up, kicking off in July with the musical RENT
Spread the word about Neptune Theatre and help us continue to provide high class entertainment in the heart of Halifax.
Jeremy Webb Artistic Director, Neptune Theatre
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to welcome you to this performance of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Thank you for joining us for a play that continues to pulse with life more than half a century after it first stunned audiences. Edward Albee’s masterpiece is often counted among the great dramas of the 20th century because it refuses comfortit’s a show that feels as daring today as it did at its premiere.
If you enjoyed today’s performance, we invite you to deepen your connection to Neptune Theatre by subscribing to our 2026–27 season. A subscription is more than a ticket package. It is a vote of confidence in the artists, the stories, and the bold range of work that defines this theatre, from enduring classics to daring new voices. Your support helps ensure theatres like ours continue to be places where audiences gather, ideas collide, and creativity thrives.
Scott McGaw Chair, Neptune Theatre Foundation
Welcome to Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, directed by Ann-Marie Kerr. Since its explosive debut, Edward Albee’s landmark play has pushed audiences with its unflinching examination of marriage, power, truth, and the stories we tell ourselves to survive. These themes are deeply human, and continue to be relevant, and challenging, even sixty years later.
At its best, theatre pushes boundaries and exposes its patrons to a wide scope of emotions and experiences. We are proud to present this iconic work, and we hope tonight’s performance sparks reflection, conversation, and perhaps a little discomfort. After all, great theatre rarely plays it safe.
