Symphoria Music Di rector Lawrence Loh, Music Director of Symphoria (Syracuse, NY), was named Music Director of the West Virginia Symphony commencing in the 2017-18 season. Mr. Loh concluded his 12-year tenure as Music Director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic in 2017. Mr. Loh had a decade-plus association with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra where he currently leads annual pops and other select programs.

Mr. Loh’s previous positions include: Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Syracuse Opera; Resident Conductor of the of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra; Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra; Associate Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra; Associate Conductor of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Denver Young Artists Orchestra.

Having a particular affinity for pops programming, Mr. Loh has been engaged for repeat performances with Chris Botti, Idina Menzel, Ann Hampton Callaway, the Texas Tenors and more.

He has assisted John Williams on multiple occasions and conducted numerous sold-out John Williams tribute concerts. He is particularly adept at conducting concerts synchronizing live orchestral music with film, and he is has lead Star Wars, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Pixar in Concert, Disney in Concert, The Wizard of Oz and Singin’ in the Rain, among other concert productions.

Mr. Loh is active as a guest conductor, both in the U.S. and abroad. In addition to annual concerts in Pittsburgh and Dallas, his recent engagements include the Boston Pops (Tanglewood); Detroit Symphony; San Diego Symphony; Seattle Symphony; Buffalo Philharmonic; and the Cathedral Choral Society at the Washington National Cathedral. Past engagements include the National (Washington D.C.), Indianapolis, Tacoma, Utah, Naples, Knoxville, Florida, El Paso, San Luis Obispo, Edmonton, Colorado, Charleston (SC), Malaysia, Daejeon (South Korea) and Greater Bridgeport Orchestras. His summer appearances include the festivals of Sun Valley, Bravo Vail Valley, Aspen (CO), Mann Center in Philadelphia, Breckenridge, Las Vegas, Hot Springs (AR), the Kinhaven Music School (VT) and the Performing Arts Institute (PA). In the summer of 2016, he made his debut at Tanglewood, conducting Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony with the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Orchestra and returned in 2017 to conduct the Boston Pops.

Mr. Loh received his Artist Diploma in Orchestral Conducting from Yale, his Masters in Choral Conducting from Indiana University and his BA, and Certificate of Management Studies, from the University of Rochester. Lawrence Loh was born in southern California of Korean parentage and raised in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He and his wife Jennifer have a son, Charlie, and a daughter, Hilary.

SEAN O’LOUGHLIN

Symphoria P rincipal Pops Conductor Sean O’Loughlin (b.1972) is Symphoria’s Principal Pops Conductor, and the newly appointed Principal Pops Conductor of the Victoria Symphony in Victoria, B.C. Canada. He is a fresh voice and a rising name in the music world. His music is characterized by vibrant rhythms, passionate melodies, and colorful scoring. Commissions from the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra highlight and showcase his diverse musical abilities.

As a conductor, he has led performances with the Boston Pops Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Chicago Symphony, the Hollywood the Vancouver Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the Victoria Symphony and the Seattle Symphony amongst others. He was the assistant conductor and arranger for a production of Sgt. Pepper Live in Las Vegas featuring the band Cheap Trick. He has served as conductor for national and world-wide tours with Josh Groban, Sarah McLachlan and the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration. He has also appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America with include such artists as Sarah McLachlan, Adele, Josh Groban,Josh Groban and NBC’s “A Very Pentatonix Christmas.” Recent collaborations Pentatonix, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Diana Ross, Journey, Melissa Etheridge, Weird Al Yankovic, Blue Man Group, Janelle Monáe, Audra McDonald, Hall and Oates, Gloria Estefan, the Indigo Girls, Diana Krall, Itzhak Perlman, Natalie Merchant, Chris Isaak, Pink Martini, Brandi Carlile, The Decemberists, Martina McBride, Josh Ritter, Gloria Gaynor and others. The Los Angeles Times calls his orchestrations “...magnificent and colorful” while adding “...even more dimension...” to the compositions. Daily Variety heralds Sean’s writing as “most impressive ...” with a “wide range of coloring in the orchestra...” that “...adds heft and rolling energy.

Through his growing number of commissioned and published works, Sean is excited to continue contributing to the rich history of orchestral and wind band literature. His music is published by Excelcia Music, Hal Leonard and Carl Fischer. He is a frequent guest conductor with professional orchestras around the country and abroad. An annual ASCAP Special Awards winner, Sean was a composition fellow at the Henry Mancini Institute in Los Angeles, and holds composition degrees from New England Conservatory and Syracuse University.

Nick Ziobro, vocalist A dynamic voice in the world of classic American standards, Nick Ziobro was named the national winner of the 2012 Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Vocal Competition, and spent a year serving as the Great American Songbook Youth Ambassador and touring with his mentor, world-renowned performer, Michael Feinstein.

When he made his New York debut at Feinstein’s at Loews Regency in 2012 opening for Michael Feinstein and Marilyn Maye, The New York Times praised him for “an easy swinging confidence and charm that suggested he could evolve into another Michael Bublé.”

Ziobro has earned a host of rave reviews around the country. He was hailed as “a budding young talent” by LA Weekly, and called “a radiant presence” from Edge Los Angeles, “absolutely breathtaking” by the Carmel Current and “stunning” by the Napa Valley Register.

Nick performed at the induction galas for the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame in 2012 and 2013 alongside Liza Minnelli, Barry Manilow, Rita Moreno, Andrea McArdle, Clay Aiken, Lari White, and Jose Feliciano.

He was invited to perform the National Anthem at Lucas Oil Stadium for the Indianapolis Colts in September 2012.

Nick has had the honor to share the stage with cabaret stars like Michael Feinstein, Marilyn Maye, Ann Hampton Calloway, and Liz Calloway, and has opened for Barbara Cook, B.B. King, and more. He has performed with prestigious symphonies, including the Pasadena Pops conducted by Marvin Hamlisch, the Seattle Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony, the American Pops Orchestra, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Symphoria in Syracuse, the Naples Philharmonic, and the Kravis Center Pops Orchestra.

He has performed at other venues all over the United States, including Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Feinstein’s at 54 Below, Birdland, the Kennedy Center, the Kravis Center, the Palladium, the Wynn Las Vegas, Riverbend Music Center, and the Napa Valley Opera House. In 2016, he took his duo show with Julia Goodwin to Tuscany, Italy, to continue to spread the music of the Great American Songbook throughout the world.

Nick holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from Rider University. He made his professional acting debut as the lead in the short film, The Last Pick Up, to be released in 2018. He was a featured act in Season 10 of America’s Got Talent part of the singing duo “Nick & Eddie” and a featured act on the television special broadcast Extraordinary as (ABC Syracuse). His voice can be heard singing in national running commercial advertisements on TV and radio.

Julia Goodwin, vocalist Born and raised in Baldwinsville NY, her piano playing father initially introduced her to music, where she frequently sang with him and her younger sister, Sara. Shortly after, she became involved with musical theater and started directing, producing, and choreographing her own pop shows with her friends and family members in her basement. This developed her love for the stage and for connecting with others. It also sparked her interest in writing her own songs starting around the age of 10.

Goodwin was introduced to the music of The Great American Songbook in 2013 where she won Michael Feinstein’s Songbook Academy, serving as the Junior Songbook Youth ambassador.

Through this, Feinstein became a forever friend and mentor to her. The two performed nationally together on some of the world’s most renowned stages including Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, Birdland, The Palladium, 54 Below, The Wynn, among others. Julia was a guest performer at the 2014 and 2017 Great American Songbook Hall of Fame Induction Galas honoring Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Linda Ronstadt, Shirley Jones, Ray Gilbert and performing a tribute to Mitzi Gaynor. Julia has taken her love for jazz music to the Symphony stage as well, working with Syracuse-Pops (Symphoria), The Naples Philharmonic, The Pasadena Pops, The Louisville Orchestra and The Rochester Philharmonic. The New York Times has applauded Julia and her jazz chops calling her “phenomenally gifted.” Goodwin released an album in 2014 titled “Feeling Good” featuring some of her favorite songbook standards.

Julia was featured on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and became a quarterfinalist on the show, performing at The Dolby Theater in Los Angeles and Radio City Music Hall. Other notable television appearances include “Michael Feinstein’s New Year’s Eve” on PBS filmed in The Rainbow Room as well as ABC’s “Inside Edition” and “Extraordinary.”

Eventually, Goodwin was introduced to social media in her high school years and quickly had a knack for making short covers to her favorite pop songs. Frequently filming with her sister, Julia gained over 230k fans on Vine with her popular covers of “Airplanes” by B.O.B, “Knock, Knock” by Mac Miller and many more. Julia currently creates videos for Instagram, which has morphed into performing her own original music and creating derivative works with lyrical rewrites.

Over the years, she has been invited to join an A-list of multiple award-winning singers from the worlds of Jazz, Broadway, Cabaret and Pop which include: Freddy Cole, Christine Ebersole, Kristin Chenoweth, Dan Brubeck,

Darren Criss, Elaine Paige, Marilyn Maye, Aaron Tveit, Jake Miller, Benny Mardones,

Andy Grammer and Jessica Sanchez. Julia performed at the 2014 M&T Jazz Fest

opening for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Trombone Shorty and at the 2016 Jazz

Fest opening for Michael McDonald.

In 2016, Goodwin attended Syracuse University, majoring in Music Industry with a concentration in Jazz Commercial studies. In December of 2019, Goodwin released her Christmas time classic “Home for The Holiday.”

Cissie Fairchilds loved our orchestra. A retired history professor at Syracuse

University, Cissie attended faithfully and donated modest gifts loyally for many

years. In Spring 2020, Symphoria learned that we would benefit from an incredible

gift from Cissie’s estate. The timing and the amount of her gift has made it possible

for Symphoria to keep planning and dreaming during the many obstacles our

community has faced since March.

We award up to 2 scholarships in June to high school seniors who plan to study instrumental, vocal, or music education in college.
