Puyo hospital represented a huge architectural challenge in response to urgent national circumstances that called for the design, construction and furnishing of state-of-the-art hospital facilities serving as a benchmark in a record time of less than one year. The construction has received international recognition as “a magnificent example of smart and effective hospital architecture�.

BICYCLE In the 1970s, Scientific American magazine published an article about a study measuring the movement efficiency of several species on the planet, including humans. How many calories per kilometre did each species consume during movement? Condors were crowned the most efficient. Humans were quite low in the ranking. However, when assessing humans on a bicycle, we rose into first position, way ahead of condors. Thanks to our intelligence and imagination, humans are capable of creating tools that exponentially increase our innate abilities, a key factor in evolution and progress.

LOCAL HOSPITAL Salou, Tarragona, Spain.

This building is an innovative model in the healthcare sector, located between a primary healthcare centre and a conventional hospital. The design had to take two basic premises into account: on the one hand, it addresses the connection between the existing building and the proposed expansion in such a way that they would remain united and, on the other, it ensures that construction work did not interfere with the running of the centre.

NUMBER 0 The concept of zero is one of humanity’s most wonderful creations, given that it simplified the documenting of numbers and facilitated arithmetic calculations. Its origins can be dated back to 700 BC, although it would not arrive in Europe until much later, in the 9th or 10th century, introduced by the Arabs, who also provided figures to represent the numerals of the decimal system used to this day. Zero is the basis of mathematics and is essential to scientific calculations. Without zero, there would be no decimal or negative numbers and modern science, technology, computing and even architecture would not have developed as they have done.

An all-inclusive space Clear Code Architecture® is the result of intensive research, in which we examine the needs of all disabilities and limitations in terms of architectural space, interlinking these needs with different spaces and thus creating a parametric method that makes it possible to objectively evaluate the level of universal access to an environment.

Clear Code Architecture® leads the way towards a more accessible, and therefore more equal, society.

The world is home to more than 7.2 billion people.

More than 15 % of these people suffer some form of disability.

40 % of the world’s population experiences some form of impediment in the use of their physical environment.

At some stage in our lives, we will all suffer from or generate some form of limitation in the use of our physical environment..

We have developed the first universal access manual that methodologically guarantees equality to everybody, regardless of any disability or limitation that an individual may suffer from, in the use of our physical environment.

At PMMT, we seek to innovate by creating new types of building that are capable of serving as benchmarks on account of their objective efficiencies, such as the reduction in turnaround times, maximum efficiency in terms of movement and extreme flexibility, amongst other factors.

Aware of the urgent need within some communities for a perfectly equipped hospital with high-quality facilities, we asked ourselves whether, rather than creating a different model of hospital in each case, we could create a single model that could be adapted depending on the circumstances.

The answer was “yes�.

The parametric hospital is the result of an intellectual process based on an in-depth analysis of the metrics and parameters that define highly-complex healthcare facilities such as hospitals. It is an architectural product with a high level of pre-assembly that makes it possible to overlap and harness all processes, reducing turnaround times for the handover of the facility in record time: less than one year.

A universally accessible handle A handle designed with universal access criteria with the Clear Code Architecture in mind. Its measurements and shape have been meticulously studied to ensure that it can easily be used by everybody, including those suffering from any form of disability or limitation. This

handle was designed to be installed in any building, in particular the busiest buildings, which is where the greatest number of individuals with disabilities or limitations convene.

The building is structured around a compact, highly functional space, rebuilding and enhancing its environment thanks to its correct positioning and precise choice in terms of the level of its foundations compared to street level.. An innovative building in the private insurance sector that offers specialist medical services to users, including an extensive rehabilitation space with a large gymnasium in addition to specialized units such as a biomechanics unit, a back school and a sleep unit.

Our extensive experience in and understanding of the development of advanced healthcare architecture projects means that we can offer consultancy services with high added value in this sector.

Plasters There are a whole range of frequently used inventions in our daily lives that we do not tend to appreciate on account of their proximity and ordinariness. A clear example of this are plasters: a simple adhesive strip with a sterilised dressing in the middle, which covers and protects small wounds, ensuring the well-being and quality of life of users. Earle Dickson created this small bandage so that his wife could dress her cuts by herself when he was not at home. Johnson & Johnson, the company he worked for, unsuccessfully marketed the invention in 1921. After an excellent marketing strategy that consisted of giving away millions of plasters to boy scout groups throughout the US, sales increased and by 1939, the plaster had become a resounding success.

We offer a specialist consultancy in the creation of functional plans broken down by room. The main advantage of working with a team of architects specialising in healthcare is that we can create a product that adapts to the specific needs of each project, rather than offering a more generic and vague proposal.

The interdisciplinary collaboration of a team comprising doctors, engineers, land planners and architects ensures 42

that the functional plan facilitates the subsequent acceleration of project time scales, by interactively including different elements of previously carried out architectural studies that have an impact on functionality.

The objective of our consultancy work is to provide assistance in the design of building types needed to define a national or corporate healthcare network, an integrated architectural model capable of providing a response at all levels, from the simplest of healthcare centres to large general hospitals.

SINGLE-FAMILY HOUSE Barcelona, Spain.

The project for this single-family house on a plot on which there was another property posed several challenges. The new construction was due to occupy part of the garden area of the main house and, therefore, two realities had to be taken into account: ensuring the new building had its own identity, whilst being designed to form part of the garden and to blend into the green area, limiting the visual impact of the construction from the main house. Wood and glass were used for the main faรงades of the property and for the perpendicular faรงades as viewed from the main house, we used an innovative system of ceramic fabric to blend into the landscape.

Our work, on three continents, primarily involves healthcare projects (hospitals, research centres, health centres and residencies), in addition to other types of buildings for the commercial and educational sectors, in addition to single-family houses and environmentally friendly housing.

Pencils The common pencil was invented thanks to the discovery of graphite leads; this material was then used to create the lead we write with.

The first pencils were square wooden bars in which a square graphite lead was slotted into the middle Later, the design of pencils took on a cylindrical form, before eventually assuming a hexagonal shape, which meant they did not roll away. The invention was perfected by incorporating new colours into the lead and a rubber at the tip. In 1915, Japanese businessman Tokuji Hayakawa created the mechanical pencil, which removed the use of wood and the cumbersome process of sharpening the lead.

The design of this high resolution diagnostics clinic seeks to serve as an international benchmark in the field of healthcare. Our objective was to look for an architectural model that would promote management efficiency in a medium-sized hospital facility whilst committing to harnessing internal movement, logistics and its facilities insofar as possible. The Smart Hospital is circular in shape and has a radial organisational system that provides for great flexibility in distributing the hospital’s functions in addition to a clear hierarchy in terms of the different movements therein. The overall simple façade, comprising vertical glass sheets, seeks to convert the building into a brand image.
