Benitez confirms Napoli departure

R

afael Benitez says he will be leaving Napoli following the final game of the Italian club’s season on Sunday. The Spaniard, 55, is favourite to take over at Real Madrid, who sacked Coach Carlo Ancelotti on Monday. “I want to thank the chairman, club and fans because after two years my experience here in Napoli is coming to an end,” said Benitez. “On Sunday, we have a very important match and I want to finish my two years with a victory.” Napoli, in fourth, hosts third-placed Lazio in their last game of the Serie A season with a Champions League place at stake. Benitez’s side are three

points behind their rivals and a win would see them qualify for Europe’s premier club competition on the basis of a better head-to-head record. Benitez refused to discuss his future and the prospect of taking charge at Real Madrid, where he had stints as a youth coach, Under-19 coach and assistant first-team coach in the 1990s. If Benitez does become Real boss, he will return to manage in his homeland for the first time since leaving Valencia to take charge of Liverpool in 2004. He won two La Liga titles and the Uefa Cup with Valencia, and led Liverpool to Champions League glory in 2005. Napoli won the Italian Cup and Italian Super Cup during his two years in charge.

Real Madrid against Paul Pogba

Barcelona may outshine Real Madrid in Pogba deal

F

C Barcelona are edging closer to beating Real Madrid in the race to sign midfield sensation Paul

Pogba. The Catalan giants are reportedly the favoured destination for Pogba by his agent Mino Raiola, whilst Pogba himself favours Los Blancos, according to L’Equipe. It seems the battle for the 22-year-old Frenchman will go down between the two La

Liga giants, with Paris SaintGermain and numerous English clubs having to watch from the sidelines. Barcelona’s new director, Ariedo Braida, reportedly met with Juventus director of football, Guiseppe Marotta, for lunch on Tuesday. Despite both clubs meeting each other in the Champions League final, it seems as though Barcelona are keen to move forward in the negotiations in

order to beat Real to Pogba’s signature. Barcelona’s transfer ban until January 2016 could be a stumbling block, but would perhaps allow Juventus to keep hold of their star for another year. Both Barcelona and Real are reportedly prepared to offer Pogba €10 million per year over five season, but would have to pay a hefty transfer fee of between €70 and €100 million.

I may retire at 29- Pique

Flamini hails Coquelin impact at Arsenal

M

athieu Flamini could miss out on running out for Arsenal in Saturday’s FA Cup final against Aston Villa due to the form of Francis Coquelin, but he has nevertheless hailed the form of his fellow Frenchman. Coquelin appeared to be heading for the exit door at the Emirates Stadium when he was shipped out on loan to Championship side Charlton Athletic earlier this season. However, Arsene Wenger handed Coquelin a chance in the first team amid an injury crisis and he has responded in fine style, making 22 Premier League appearances and becoming a pivotal figure in Arsenal’s team. Flamini has found his chances limited as a result, but welcomes the strength in depth at Wenger’s disposal. “If you look at the stats we nearly won every single game since February,” Flamini said. “It’s a situation I accept. Competition makes you better, but there’s not much to say when the team is winning every single game.

Gerard Pique

F

ormer Manchester United defender Gerard Pique has revealed that if he’s not good enough next season, he’ll rather retire at 29 years old than leave FC Barcelona. The Spaniard admitted that if he isn’t up to pace next season, he would rather have an early retirement than leave the Catalan club. “I’ll retire at Barça. I don’t know when - the older I am, the better,” he noted. “I’m sure about that; I can’t see myself wearing any other shirt. “If I see that next year I’m not up to scratch, I’ll hang my boots

up at 29 years of age. “I don’t associate this sport with anything except Barcelona.” Pique is a product of Barcelona’s youth system, but left the club for Manchester United in 2006, before his return in 2008 much to the disappointment of Red Devils fans. The 28-year-old has been a key figure in the side’s defence in recent years, where he’s won the La Liga five times, the Copa del Rey twice and the Champions League twice. The defender has been in excellent form this season for Barca, playing 42 games and scoring seven goals.
