omething stinks about the way that the Delta police and Crown prosecutors’ office have responded to the death of Gerald McDonald.

The 80-year-old man died of a heart attack a couple of weeks after being savagely beaten with bats outside his home in North Delta.

Not only is nobody being charged with murder or manslaughter –

despite the coroner having declared McDonald’s death a homicide – nobody is being charged with any crime related to the attack on this poor soul.

One person – Gregory James Smithies, 51 – has been charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace, for allegedly swinging a bat at the head of a neighbour who tried to intervene.

McDonald’s assault was the climax of a pathetically banal disagreement over who had the right of way along the street in front of his house – a teenage couple who’d been out for a stroll, or the

old man’s son David, who’d been out walking his dogs.

As is all too common in this era of post-courtesy, this silly spat went from zero to 200 in a blink. The couple left, allegedly returned with the girl’s dad (of all people!) and metal bats, and all hell broke loose.

Here’s how it went down, according to a neighbour who saw the whole bloody business unfold.

Nikki Furber, who lived across the street, saw Gerald McDonald yelling at these people to get out of his yard.

“One of the guys, I don’t know if it was the dad or the kid, started hitting the man with the bat, and then the two other girls started

just booting him and everything,” Furber recalled.

She said she heard “at least five to seven whacks on the back – crack, crack, crack – on the old man.”

“I was yelling ‘Just stop, he’s an old man!’”

Furber’s partner, Rick Moreau, came outside and headed toward her. “I could see somebody on the ground being swarmed,” he said.

“He had blood all over him.”

When his wife turned back toward their house, Moreau recalled, the eldest of the attackers swung the bat at her head, missing it by about four inches. see YES, BRUTAL › page 3

Given this eyewitness evidence, surely the Crown hasn’t concluded that the altercation was a consensual fight? Particularly considering one side came equipped with bats?

“Nobody invited anybody to come onto our property with bats,” said Hailey McDonald, the victim’s granddaughter.

defend his family, he said, and is bewildered at any suggestion of consensuality.

“I’ve never heard of anything so stupid in my life – I consented to have four people come up to my yard with bats? Please...”

Guess you had to be there. Still, isn’t this the kind of stuff judges and juries are supposed to sort out?

McDonald senior died of a heart attack on Oct. 4, 2011. The bat attack happened on Sept. 20. A couple weeks after his death, members of the McDonald family contacted the media to voice their concern that the Delta police hadn’t laid charges.

Delta police spokesman Ciaran Feenan said at the time that investigators were “going to be prudent” and wait for the

outcome of a coroner’s report, which could take up to six weeks, before charges, if any, would be recommended.

Coroner Kate Corcoran filed her report on Jan. 30. She determined the immediate cause of death was myocardial infarction, by means of physical assault, and classified McDonald’s death as a homicide. Corcoran noted it’s difficult to say if the altercation caused or contributed to the heart attack, “although such a scenario cannot be completely excluded.”

Based on the autopsy alone, she noted, the cause of death was myocardial infarction due to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Corcoran noted that while it can’t be known with absolute certainty exactly what impact

the assault had on his death, “the timing of death in relation to the assault is significant and cannot be considered coincidental.”

“Simply stated: but for the altercation and resulting physical injuries, Mr. McDonald would very likely not have died when he did,” the coroner concluded.

Nevertheless, the Crown’s assessment of whether to lay charges was based on the autopsy report, not the coroner’s report, Mackenzie confirmed.

Perhaps this case – given the razor’s edge it appears to be riding on – would best be judged by a judge, rather than leaving the call to a Crown prosecutor who might think the case unwinnable.

Convicted cop still hasn’t been fired SURREY – RCMP brass are planning to fire Cpl. Benjamin “Monty” Robinson now that he’s a convicted criminal, but can’t say when that will happen. Until it does, he’ll stay on the police payroll.

Robinson acted to mislead police when he downed two shots of vodka following the 2008 crash that killed a South Delta man, a judge ruled Friday.

Robinson was charged following the Oct. 25, 2008 crash that killed Orion Hutchinson.

Assistant RCMP Commissioner Norm Lipinski, district commander for the Lower Mainland, said Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens is seeking his dismissal. Asked why Robinson won’t be fired outright, now that he’s a convicted criminal, Lipinski said he’s still entitled to due process as a police officer under the RCMP Act. “We believe in due process,” he said.

“We have to go through those steps.”

A date of April 4 has been set aside to set a date for sentencing.

Leaked chemical was pool cleaner SURREY – The Surrey YMCA pool was evacuated early Friday afternoon after a delivery truck there started leaking muriatic acid. The chemical, also known as hydrogen chloride, is used to clean pools.

The incident happened at about noon and a Surrey fire department hazardous material team was called in to mop up. Nobody was injured, Deputy Fire Chief John Caviglia said.

The YMCA re-opened later Friday.

SURREY – Shoppers at Central City Shopping Centre in Surrey are in for a dose of reality.

On Monday, Pilothouse Real Estate Inc. unveiled a sample of its new condominiums near Tim Hortons in the mall – but the unveiling had a twist.

For the next six weeks, mall-goers will have a chance to watch what is being called the “world’s first real-time, e-drama,” as it unfolds in real life.

Three local actors will spend the next 45 days living out a partially scripted life behind the glass walls of the sample condominium suite, all in plain view of the public. The show will also be streamed live over the internet.

The idea came as a marketing strategy

that takes advantage of reality TV trends and social media to promote the construction of a new condominium development in Surrey.

“The next six weeks are purely to show off the suite, just to show off to the public how it works, how people would live in it,” said Bill Morrison, president of Pilothouse and a big fan of the Survivor TV series.

Morrison thought the idea of a reality show would be a perfect way to showcase the modular features of the condo design, such as configurable walls.

“You can see when you watch someone’s real life how they interact in a suite, and we thought that’s how we have to do it. We have to show reality, live television,” he said.

The show will be staffed by three full-time actors, a CBC scriptwriter and a live set complete with video and lighting production. The actors will perform during

mall hours and will be joined by other actors and TV personalities over the sixweek period. Jillian Harris, of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, will be making an appearance but promoters are keeping a tight lid on other celebrity guest spots.

Shoppers can expect to see a lot of drama and interaction over the next six weeks, said Morrison For Jas Dhillon, one of the actors working on the project, the experience is a little different, to say the least.

“It’s hard to explain. It’s totally something you have to see for yourself, it’s kind of like living in a fish bowl,” she said.

The unveiling attracted quite a bit of attention from curious onlookers.

“It feels very much like Big Brother, but I hope they have fun in there because I don’t know if I would be able to do it,” said Leighton Fong, a shopper at the mall.

Meech, who documented his campaign finances on his own website, had $9,629 in both contributions and expenses. He was the biggest contributor to his campaign, providing $7,200.

Successful council candidates Bruce McDonald and Jeannie Kanakos, who ran along with Delta school board poll topper Laura Dixon, listed their contributions at just over $32,400 and expenses at $30,300.

Elected for the first time to council, Sylvia Bishop had just over $28,800 in contributions and $27,400 in expenses.

She gave over $4,500 to her own campaign, but also received several big donations from CUPE. As far as the others who were elected to the Delta school board, Dale Saip, Simon Truelove and Nick Kanakos ran under the Responsible Academic and Education Leadership (REAL) banner. They had just over $9,700 in contributions and about $6 remaining after expenses. Incumbent Brenda Bennett Schneider was also on the REAL slate but wasn’t returned.

Elected for the first time, Val Windsor had $1,400 in contributions but $4,957 in expenses.

Fabian Milat, who ran for both council and school board but was only reelected to the school board, had $8,951 in contributions and just over $7,000 in expenses. He was the biggest contributor to his campaign, giving $5,200.

DELTA – Mayor Lois Jackson and her slate had by far the most cash at their disposal in last November’s municipal election.

Jackson, who won a fifth term as mayor, campaigned with successful Delta council incumbents Robert Campbell, Ian Paton and Scott Hamilton on the Delta Independent Voters Association (DIVA) ticket. They received $109,000 in contributions and recorded $93,358 in expenses, leaving a surplus of $15,600.

DIVA recently submitted its campaign financial disclosure statement to municipal hall and that information is now available for public viewing.

The DIVA slate, which had $84,000 in contributions and $67,000 in expenses in the 2008 election, was clearly the financial juggernaut in the 2011 campaign.

Some of the big contributors were Ron Toigo’s Shato Holdings ($5,000), Millennium Pacific Greenhouse owner Shirvan Bakhtiyari ($6,000), Don Sangster ($4,000), Westwood Ridge Development Corp. ($5,000), Westshore Terminals ($3,000), Harvie Road Investments ($5,000), Daihu Investments ($5,000) and Highmark Homes ($2,000).

Jackson easily retained the mayor’s seat with 43.17 per cent of the popular vote, while the rest of her slate was also re-elected.

Longtime councillor Krista Engelland finished second in the mayor’s race with 26.47 per cent, while Heather King received 22.98 per cent. John Meech was a distant fourth with 7.39 per cent.

Jackson won every poll in North Delta and Ladner, while Engelland topped every Tsawwassen poll.

Engelland, who campaigned under the One Delta Civic Association banner, had $25,224 in contributions and $85 left after expenses. She personally donated almost $4,000 to her campaign.

King, who failed to win a single poll, listed her contributions at $70,274. After expenses, she had $38 remaining.

SURREY – Students are back in class this week following spring break but the specter of further job action by teachers still looms as a very real possibility.

“In response to the harsh and unjust measures contained in Bill 22, teachers from across the province have crafted a bold plan of action with the ultimate goal of having the so-called Education Improvement Act repealed,” states a BCTF press release.

Denise Moffatt, president of the Surrey Teachers’ Association, said teachers are following a teach-only program. This may mean teachers will no longer organize things like committees, clubs and teams or fundraising events.

“The recommendation is that teachers not take on new extracurriculars at this time,” said Moffatt.

Teachers will be continuing with events and activities that were planned before the BCTF came to a decision about the latest course of job action.

This phase will continue until a BCTF

vote in mid-April that will decide on what course of action the organization will take to respond to Bill 22, which severely limits the negotiating power of teachers and restricts them from taking an job action until August.

“I think people are frustrated … teachers are outraged about the bill, they feel extremely frustrated that the situation in classrooms is not going to get better,” said Moffatt.

The stoppage of extra-curricular activities should not go against the legislation of Bill 22, but Moffatt is unsure how the government will respond.

“I have no idea what this government is going to argue,” said Moffatt. “This plan has some action in it but it is pretty minimal at this point.”

Surrey teachers will be meeting Wednesday to discuss a local course of action and asses the mood in the district.

“I expect that when we put our plans locally together there will be a number of other demonstrative actions that teachers in Surrey will be engaged in over the next several weeks,” said Moffatt.

SURREY – Two people were run over by cars in bizarre incidents in Surrey on Friday night.

The first happened during a drug deal gone bad, at 25th Avenue and 128th Street, at about 9:15 p.m.

The victim had arranged for a car to meet him there, but when the deal went sideways, the driver, a 25-year-old South Surrey man, ran over the guy with his white Chevy Camaro and took off.

The victim, a 49-year-old South Surrey man, is in critical condition in hospital.

Surrey RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger said the driver is facing charges of hit-and-run and maybe aggravated assault as well.

Just before midnight, a 17-year-old Surrey girl was run down by a Burnaby girl of the same age, outside a house party at 140th Street and 102A Avenue.

Grainger said the girl had a bunch of other teens riding in her Mercedes and they were leaving the party when someone

chucked something at the car. As they turned back to investigate, people were streaming out of the party and the Surrey girl was run over.

A fight then broke out between the Drew Grainger crowd and the car’s occupants, with the latter group then running away to Surrey Central SkyTrain station, where police arrested them. The Burnaby teen is facing a charge of aggravated assault. The victim sustained a sprained foot and fractured sternum.

Earlier Friday, at 3:30 p.m., a 74-year-old White Rock woman was sent to hospital with serious back injuries after her grey Altima ran a red light and was T-boned by a blue Expedition driven by a 33-year-old Langley man, who sustained minor injuries.

Charges are pending.

Federal NDP core will shift out of B.C. InTheHouse Keith Baldrey

T

he federal NDP has made a historic choice in Thomas Mulcair as its new leader, and it will be interesting to see how that choice affects not only B.C.’s presence in the party but also the party’s strength in this province.

The obvious distinction about Mulcair is that he is from Quebec and is closely associated with that province’s politics.

Presumably, he will shift his focus to not only maintaining his party’s sudden breakthrough in that province but to also build on it.

For decades, the NDP has been dominated by MPs and activists from Western Canada and parts of Ontario. B.C. has long played an important role, as it could always be counted on to send a consistent number of NDP MPs to Ottawa in each election.

As a result, B.C. had a good proportional presence in what was always a fairly small caucus. But if Mulcair delivers the goods and actually brings the party to

power, he won’t be doing it with many more MPs from B.C. He will attain power by expanding the party’s seat count in Quebec and Ontario.

As a result, the historic core of the NDP will shift out of the west, and B.C. will find its influence in the party begin to wane.

So the NDP will become a more Quebec-focused party. But what other changes may occur under Mulcair’s leadership?

The fact he’s a former Liberal and was chosen leader despite that speaks volumes of how the NDP may be changing before our very eyes.

The party has long been dominated by ideologues who wear their social democratic policies on their sleeves, and who have never had to change their views because they never had a remote chance of actually forming a government.

But while Mulcair appears to be a centrist who tilts left, he is not cut from the same cloth as those who built the party. Former party leader Ed Broadbent, an icon to much of the party faithful, denounced Mulcair’s candidacy in the final weeks of the campaign.

Mulcair beat the party establishment, and in so doing he may also be able to beat the party’s past. I’d be surprised if he embraces a lot of traditional lefty positions, (he’s already on the record about supporting free trade and advocating a more aggressive foreign policy, including military intervention in such places as Syria).

A B.C. NDP MLA told me he couldn’t help noticing a photo of all the leadership candidates at the party convention, which to him spoke volumes about the choices being offered.

All of them were waving at the crowd, except for one.

That would be Brian Topp, the party establishment choice, who opted to hold up a clenched fist. The clenched-fist symbolizes the old days of class struggle and union hall politics of

the traditional left.

Mulcair appears ready to take the party down a new path that has less to do with partnering with old causes and more to do with embracing a new economy while still fighting for such issues as income equality and climate change.

And this brings us to the sensitive issue of party unity, which Mulcair says is his top priority.

The party establishment (the “elites”) pulled out all the stops in trying to keep him out of the top job, and it’s hard to imagine all those knives will be permanently put away.

His decision to keep Vancouver East MP Libby Davies as deputy leader will appease the left-wing faction of his caucus, but I have to wonder just how long she’ll keep that post. Now that he’s leader, his pro-free trade and non-

pacifist positions take on new importance, and are sure to upset the traditional leftists in his party.

Throw in the challenges presented by a Quebecdominated caucus, and the stage is set for some interesting internal tensions to emerge.

It’s also unclear how B.C. voters will react to a Quebecker trying to become prime minister.

Will there be a backlash among some voters who are unhappy with the Harper government but are reluctant to vote for

someone so closely tied to Quebec?

But of course if the NDP can make big gains in Quebec, winning seats in B.C. becomes less of a priority.

Animal care in Surrey will be enhanced under new contract The Editor, Re: “Surrey lets animal lovers down by turfing BCSPCA,” the Now letters, March 20.

Commissionaires B.C. is excited to partner with the City of Surrey and the community to provide care and adoption services for animals in Surrey.

Our organization has been providing municipalities across B.C. with animal control services for over 25 years, including the communities of Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Armstrong, Kimberley and Revelstoke.

We will work with the city to enhance the level of care for animals in Surrey and will operate under the same legislation as the BCSPCA. Our experienced employees are dedicated to the

well-being of animals and work every day to safeguard the people and the animals of their local communities.

We encourage volunteers and welcome all those who love animals to come down to the Surrey Animal Shelter and get involved. Turfing BCSPCA can only be better for Surrey’s animals The Editor, Re: “Surrey lets animal lovers down by turfing BCSPCA,” the Now letters, March 20.

I too used to feel like letter writer Bruce Wilder about the BCSPCA – until I volunteered at the Surrey shelter, where I became totally disillusioned.

Unfortunately, after two years of volunteering, I had to give up because I was so worried about the dogs it was affecting my health. Don’t kid yourself by thinking that the BCSPCA won’t put down healthy dogs. I and many other volunteers know this to be the case.

I am so thankful to Mayor Dianne Watts for giving another organization a chance to do better for our animals.

As an animal lover, I can only see this as a positive step.

I believe with all my heart that this is not an animal problem, it is a social problem caused by irresponsible people – and people should pay to take care of these animals in a caring and humane way.

It’s simple – keep your dogs on a leash or use dog parks The Editor, My three-year-old daughter and I often visit Hillcrest Park’s playground in Cloverdale. Regularly, this park is full of unleashed dogs – even though children are playing within the park.

My daughter and I were enjoying a picnic in the park last fall when a man from my neighbourhood brought his Airedale terrier out for a run. I turned around to notice that the dog was bolting toward us. The dog owner called his dog back but it was only an arm’s length away before it retreated.

As we left the park, I heard the dog owner tell another owner of an off-leash dog to keep her dog away from my daughter because my daughter was afraid of dogs. I was offended because I have taught my daughter to love dogs.

However, incidents such as this may make her afraid after all. Please, keep your dog on a leash or use the dog parks.

The Editor, I would like to comment on the recent letters published in the Now about the closing of the BCSPCA. As an animal lover and volunteer, I’m glad to see the BCSPCA go for a number of reasons. For years I donated money on a monthly basis to the BCSPCA, then I started volunteering to help out when I could at different organizations.

Most people don’t know the half of what goes on at the BCSPCA. It is supposed to be a “no kill” shelter, but that is

The Editor, Re: “‘Be smart’ about tolls: Watts,” the Now, March 15.

Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts’ vision for broader tolls is, if we were to be realistically speaking, unfair in itself.

Watts makes a good point about needing to avoid penalizing a certain region by making it pay the most tolls to cross a certain improved bridge. However, tolling bridges across the region is hardly fair and equitable.

If we were to toll, say, the Second Narrows Bridge to pay for new bridges that just so happen to be links from Surrey and area but have regional importance, that would be unfair for those in the region – because I’m willing to bet that a large amount of the traffic crossing the Second Narrows Bridge also does not cross other bridges in Surrey.

People in Vancouver and elsewhere would be paying for a bridge that they would not use often and does not significantly benefit them in any way. That would be unfair.

I would rather see more creative ways of raising money to recoup the capital costs of the new bridges that may tower over Surrey over the next few years.

For example, Watts should be advocating for decreased tolls for local vehicles entirely and increased tolls for commercial vehicles and goods movement.

If the need to accommodate increased regional goods movement, such as through the South Fraser Perimeter Road (in the case of the Pattullo Bridge) was one of the big reasons we needed to construct new bridges, then those parties responsible for goods movement should be paying more to refinance the capital costs of the new bridges than the citizens of the communities nearby.

Pretrial centre expansion is ‘state-of-the-art’ SURREY – B.C. Attorney General Shirley Bond poured the first cement Thursday for the foundation of the $90-million Surrey Pretrial Centre expansion, which is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

The 216-cell expansion, immediately west of the current centre, which itself is about 20 years old, will make the Surrey Pretrial Centre the largest provincial corrections centre in B.C. with 365 cells.

Bond said the expansion project will create up to 250 construction jobs, and 130 new corrections officers will be hired to run the place once it’s ready.

A curling fundraiser is taking on an international flair.

Surrey resident Deb Imada teamed up with the Royal City Curling Club last year to launch the Bumspiel — Curling for Colon Cancer.

Imada, a colorectal cancer survivor, launched the event in 2011 during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, which is celebrated in Canada in March.

This year’s bonspiel happens Saturday (March 31) from noon to 9 p.m. at the Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster.

“This year’s bonspiel has a lot of medical people attending,” Imada said.

“I have four teams of nurses. I have a pharmacist who teaches pharmacy at UBC.” The bonspiel will also be attended by some doctors from the Netherlands, who are interested in collaborating with Canadian organizations on the issue of screening for colorectal cancer.

“Their mandate is to push screening,” Imada explained. “They have 10 screening clinics in the Netherlands.

They are interested in the event because of the fact it is sports enhancement and awareness about colorectal cancer.”

Imada was diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer in 2008 when she was 43. In the following two years she underwent two surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and dealt with side effects of chemotherapy that left her hands numb.

Imada thought the hemorrhoids she had after had a child had returned but discovered she had a tumour. She encourages people to talk to their doctor if they have any concerns, and

A pair of women with roots in Surrey have launched the Be Your Own Best Friend network — or BYOBF — as a way to connect South Asian women involved in business pursuits.

The network, co-founded

by Sukhi Ghuman and Manpreet Dhillon, is geared toward women in homebased businesses, in offices, entrepreneurs, mothers and those exploring new opportunities.

Ghuman is a television host, photographer and marketing specialist; Dhillon is a business coach and Akashic Records consultant. Ghuman was born and raised in Surrey, while Dhillon is originally from Kamloops and now has family living in Surrey; both women live in Vancouver.

In 2005, the women met through volunteering their time as directors of the not-for-profit Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration (VIBC) Society, now host of the largest bhangra festival in North America.

SOUTH SURREY — The Semiahmoo Peninsula Seniors Planning Table is organizing a fair Thursday morning to showcase volunteer opportunities for older adults.

The group, made up of local seniors and organizations, aims to better engage the community to make it more inclusive to older adults, said Natasha Raey, a spokesperson with Sources Community Resource Centres, which hosts the planning table.

“It’s also an event for people to meet other volunteers in the community,” said Raey.

“It’s a good way to meet new people.”

The day includes a free volunteer appreciation breakfast that was sure to be fully booked long before the March 29 event.

The fair, which is open to the public, runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the Tim Hortons Community Cruiser on hand for the morning to hand out coffee and timbits.

set up at the fair to showcase the volunteer opportunities they have available. Aside from Sources, other presenters include the South Surrey Hospice Society, Options, Semiahmoo House, the B.C. Tinnitus Association, Friends of the White Rock Library and Spirit of the Sea Festival.

Raey also invited people to check out the new opportunity offered by Sources and the City of White Rock, which have partnered to form a new Emergency Preparedness Committee. Volunteers are needed to put on workshops about emergency preparedness, she said, as well as to go out to local stratas and apartment buildings to help people take a proactive approach to their safety. Because this project is in the early stages, Raey said they really need dedicated, motivated people to step up and get things going.

The Older Adult Volunteer Appreciation and Opportunities Fair is at the South Surrey Recreation Centre, 14601 20th Ave., and will feature door prizes sponsored by Sources, the United Way, City of Surrey and Comfort Keepers.

Surrey firefighters and B.C.’s attorney general have launched an ambitious campaign to see that every household in the province has a working smoke alarm.

“This is about saving lives,” said Justice Minister and AG Shirley Bond at a press conference Thursday in a Newton fire hall.

“It’s a very ambitious goal.”

A recent study done by Surrey Fire Chief Len Garis and Dr. Joseph Clare, of the University of the Fraser Valley, found that working smoke alarms could reduce the number of fire deaths by 32 per cent each year. Their research reveals that almost 70 per cent of houses that do catch fire didn’t have a functioning smoke alarm.

Oftentimes, people forget to change their batteries.

“Just test your smoke alarm, it’s very simple,” Garis said. “We have an opportunity to save lives as we go forward.”

According to the study, rental properties, homes with young children, disabled people and seniors, low-income households and those in rural communities and First Nations reserves are more likely to suffer from fire deaths. The UFV study suggests 69 fire-related deaths could be avoided in Canada each year if all households contained working smoke alarms.

Junior hockey fans got their money’s worth watching the Surrey Eagles battle the Cowichan Valley Capitals through seven playoff games over the past week.

Separated by a single point after 60 regular season games, the BCHL Coastal Conference semifinals proved how close the two teams were as the series was decided on the final shot of the seventh game.

Brandon Tanev scored 3:42 into overtime to lift the Eagles to the win and send Surrey into the next round of the playoffs.

“It was a really awesome series,” said an obviously relieved Surrey coach Matt Erhart. “Every game was tight and every game had a twist of some kind in it. There were tons of storylines and in the end, the last shot won it. A series like that is kind of fitting given how close the teams were; there really wasn’t much to separate the two clubs. Both teams did everything they could to win it and I’m definitely happy we’re the team that came out on top. The winning

With their season on the line, the Capitals earned a hard-fought come-from-behind 2-1 win at South Surrey Arena Thursday night in Game 5. I know a lot of you have been golfing all winter and I know many of you have spent some or most of the winter somewhere warm so your golf game has to be at a high level.

It seems for many who hate to golf when it’s cold, well this is the time to start thinking about it – especially with The Masters around the corner.

That being the case I went to my friend Steve Carter, who operates Drive 365 Fitness in South Surrey (drive365fitness.com).

While Steve will tune up anybody, he does specialize in golf. So I asked him to sit offer up some help for those who are struggling to get into the swing of things.

It’s all yours, Steve.

First of all these exercises are to be performed in three sets of 12—or as long as you can go.

1. To maintain a strong golf stance in your follow through, try static lunges with rotation.

Lunge with one leg forward, bending knees toward the ground. Extend your arms straight out and rotate a medicine ball from centre to the right, back to centre, to the left, and back to centre. Return to a standing position, and alternate legs. If you don’t have a medicine ball a small lightweight will do.

Static lunges with rotation build a firm base in your legs for greater stabilization while focusing on balance.

2. Studies have shown that it is difficult to maintain posture in your downswing if you are unable to perform a full deep overhead squat with your heels on the ground.

Squat with feet shoulder width apart. Then, while holding the ends of a golf club with your hands placed outside your shoulders, extend your arms over top of your head.

Lean back onto your heels in a squat position ensuring you can see your toes at all times.

Return to a standing position and repeat.

3. If you feel you could use more power in your downswing, try performing the dumbbell golf swing.

Start with your feet placed in set up position. Then, while holding a five-pound dumbbell with two hands, mimic the same movement as if you were performing a complete golf swing. Practise rotating the torso and accelerating through the golf swing movement without losing balance or swaying.

The dumbbell golf swing will help with accurate ball placement and body stabilization during your swing.

Defenceman Devon Toews led the Eagles with a hat trick while Robert Lindores tallied once.

Game 7 brought both teams back to South Surrey Arena on Saturday night and, if Hunt was rattled by the strange OT goal the previous night, he didn’t show it. Hunt turned aside 42 Cowichan shots in the clincher and was named the game’s first star.

“Andrew’s bounce-back was great after what happened in Cowichan,” Erhart said. “The mental strength he showed was amazing because if he let it bother him, he could have folded the tent and allowed a couple of early goals Saturday and that would have put us behind the eight ball. Andrew showed why he was a first team all-star in that game and he gave us a chance to win every game in that series.”

Alex Hagen opened the scoring in the first period only to have Cowichan pull even with the only goal of period two.

Surrey regained the lead on Hagen’s second of the evening early in the third

period, but Cowichan managed to score with one minute left to force overtime for the second time in as many nights.

Hunt came up with some big stops early in the extra session before Tanev converted a pass from Morley to ice the series.

“When he scored, it capped a lot of hard work in seven games over nine nights,” Erhart said. “It took a big weight off our shoulders because in the end, it went our way. It was a very emotional time for both teams.

Cowichan is a good team with a lot of good young men who showed a lot of class in how they handled everything in a series that could have gone either way.”

The Eagles won’t have long to savour their victory. Surrey must now travel to Powell River to take on the Kings in the best-of-seven Coastal Conference finals beginning on Tuesday night. Powell River downed Coquitlam in six games to win the other coastal semifinal series on Friday night.

The Surrey-Powell River match-up marks the second consecutive year the two teams have met in the coast finals.

Last spring the Kings ousted the Eagles in six games.

This season Powell River passed Surrey in the final two weeks of the schedule to take first place in the Coastal Conference by three points.

The Kings outscored the Eagles by three goals over 60 regular season games but Powell River’s stingy defence was a whopping goal a game better than Surrey’s, 127-187.

The Eagles have two days off before travelling up the Sunshine Coast for Game 1 Tuesday. Erhart said the short break might actually work in Surrey’s favour.

“Winning such an emotional series gave us a huge boost and hopefully we can carry that momentum over into Game 1 in Powell River,” he said. “It’s not much of a break but being able to get right back at it might work out well for us.”

Game 2 goes Wednesday night before the series shifts to South Surrey Arena for Game 3 at 7 p.m. Friday night.

Game 4 will be played Saturday at the same venue.

Surrey pitcher Nicole Day made UBC Thunderbirds softball history by throwing the team’s first-ever no-hitter in a 5-0 shutout of Hastings College (Nebraska) at the Tucson Invitational on March 20.

Over seven innings, the third-year student struck out seven batters and walked three, without giving up a hit.

Brittany Meyer of Delta, Alana Westerhof of Delta and Cassandra Dypchey of Surrey each had two hits in the game.

Day’s no-hitter came less than 24 hours after she threw a complete game against Graceland University, allowing just one hit, while striking out nine.

Day didn’t walk any batters in a 5-0 win.

UBC plays its first home games of the year on March 30 at London Park in Richmond against the University of Great Falls (Montana).

In cross-country skiing, Sean Beddows finished fourth in his division in the five-kilometre race and fifth in his division in the 2.5-km and 7.5-km races.

Kristina Ettema competed in alpine skiing where she earned medals for her division in the giant slalom, slalom and super G races.

On the ice, Alexandra Magee earned medals for her performances in the freeskate and dance events of the figure skating competition.

Marc Theriault also shone in the figure skating events, capturing gold for the freeskate in his eighth appearance at the Special Olympics National Games.

Another Surrey skater, Jennifer Utendale, earned a medal for the freeskate in her first national competition.

In the curling rink, Dale Wright competed with the B.C. Rockers rink, which finished fourth in their division.

Eagles edge Impact The Surrey-based B.C. Eagles successfully defended their Western

Canada Sledge Hockey Championship title at a tourney in Calgary March 9-11.

The Eagles played a three-game series against the Edmonton Impact, winning twice.

The Impact boasted an improved roster featuring several Canadian national development team players from Manitoba.

The improved Impact tested the Eagles throughout the serier before Surrey emerged on top.

Surrey won the first game 4-3 but dropped the second match 3-1. The Eagles then bounced back to win the third and deciding game 2-1 with Abbotsford’s Joe Skillen earning player of the game honours.

The Alberta showdown marked the end of the season for the Eagles although two players will see further action. James Gammell and Surrey resident Scott Karrasch are off to Norway where they will play for Canada in the 2012 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships.

Sledge Hockey is the Paralympics version of ice hockey, designed for athletes with little to no movement in their lower extremities.

ust because it’s local is it good for you and the world?

Excitement about the local food movement sometimes soars into the romantic stratosphere, with visions of sugarplum fairies dancing on rooftops and backyards, scattering organic rutabagas to eager schoolchildren while neighbours gather in community gardens singing ring-aroundthe-rosy. That’s the way it looks to some of the hard-working corporate farmers toughing it out in world export markets.

At a recent Food Summit conference in Toronto, organized by the Conference Board of Canada, an evening debate went off in search of reality, pitting two teams of debaters on the topic, “Local food: good for us and good for the world.”

Without getting into who said what, it soon became clear that “local food” is a clumsy marker for an amazing array of initiatives that are not just about doing what the corporate food system does so well: providing Canadians with year-round access to a great variety of safe, quality food at low prices (relative to income) never seen before in history.

No reasonable person is going to pretend that we can replace all that with local food.

Even Alicia Smith and James McKinnon, Vancouver inventors of the 100-mile diet, never intended that everyone should live according to their fascinating experiment. I don’t know anyone who wants all local, all the time.

Give up guacamole and espresso? Never!

Trade has many benefits, as B.C.’s agricultural industry proudly demonstrates, depending on foreign buyers for our fish, cranberries, blueberries and wines.

But the local food movement is code for many things that aren’t just about being local.

The full ecology of benefits credited to local food makes policy-makers drool: more fresh, more nutritious food, more prosperous local farmers, healthier eating, fewer fat kids, less diabetes, lower health care costs, safer neighbourhoods, more beautiful streets, fewer hungry people, more exercise, lower GHGs, more resilience to climate change, safer food, less soil erosion, happier animals, less pollution and rutabagas forever.

Like our food itself, this revolution in growing and eating needs more honest, transparent labelling. Whether it’s called the good food movement, the sustainable food

movement, the organic food movement, the equitable food movement or the urban food revolution, it’s underway everywhere. There are no fewer than five recent books, including my own, on this topic with the word “revolution” in the title. There are also five different organizations working feverishly on a national food policy for Canada, from the Conference Board to the People’s Food Movement.

Canadian style, into a mushy agreement that both views had merit. No, local food doesn’t always have a smaller ecological footprint. Yes, it is more likely to deliver health than profit.

You could also say it’s about going back to the junction where we detoured away from sustainable eating and food production into a world of plentiful, profitable, harmful food.

ne way to avoid the depletion of our favourite fish from the sea is to include less popular marine creatures on the menu; the squishy, spiny and tentacled beasts that seem more scary than succulent. Given the right treatment however, some of the most unappealing animals turn out to be downright delicious.

Chef Frank Pabst, below, of Yaletown’s Blue Water Café, is Vancouver’s resident expert on the matter.

His menus always use the finest, freshest, most sustainable ingredients available; but early year he devotes a month to prepping and plating underappreciated species of seafood.

His “Unsung Heroes” menu is heavy with abundant and underused animals like jellyfish, sea urchins, periwinkles and barnacles.

Big on the list is octopus. The gangly cephalopods can often be found on the eastern side of Vancouver Island, and thanks to the traps used to catch them, their bycatch quotient is low. They need long cooking to make them tender, but they’re versatile and their flavour is mild. Try some today.

hat’s a responsible seafood lover to do? On the one hand, environmentalists caution that the world’s oceans have been massively over-fished. But fish farming, a large and growing industry in B.C., has been dogged with controversy. A judicial inquiry is currently underway to study the erratic numbers of the Fraser River wild salmon stocks, and some believe aquaculture may have been part of the problem, either through pollution or the escape of non-native species. The farming industry adamantly denies that it has any impact on wild stocks, and insists it helps to relieve the pressure on ocean fisheries.

Kelly Roebuck is a representative for SeaChoice, a joint initiative of several environmental groups, including the Living Oceans Society and the David Suzuki Foundation, that helps consumers pick the most sustainable seafood options.

“When it comes to aquaculture, it’s not all created equal,” she said. “It really depends on the farming method. We look at the management, we look at whether there are escapes, diseases or parasites. We look at if there is effluent from the farm, either feed or fish feces. There are a number of different criteria.”

But Roebuck admits that it’s difficult to say if a farm has had fish escape or not.

Many overseas farms are poorly regulated and difficult to assess from a distance.

In B.C., Roebuck said, there is also a spectrum of sustainability.

“Shellfish aquaculture, such as mussels, is a good example of a best choice,” she said. “We also have rainbow trout and tilapia that are farmed inland in closed containment and are also ranked as best choices. At the other end of the spectrum, we do have open net pens that have quite a few environmental concerns. We rank those as an ‘avoid.’”

Not all salmon farms are created equal either, said Roebuck.

“We really want to see a transition from open net pens to closed containment. There are a couple of good examples. There’s Bruce Swift in Agassiz, who’s been around for a few years. He provides Coho salmon to a few high-end restaurants in Vancouver. There’s also SweetSpring just across the border in Washington State and they supply Overwaitea Foods. They only sell that product in their stores. We’d like to see government and industry support that innovation and move to the land instead.”

FREERANGEORFARMED the raw truth

Land-based farming is still only done on a small scale right now, although larger projects are in the planning stages. But there are trade-offs — closed containment farms require substantially more energy to operate, which drives up the price and contributes to climate change.

What’s more, it’s difficult for consumers to know the details of how a given fish was raised.

“The labeling laws in Canada are so weak, they’re not even required to say if it’s farmed or wild,” Roebuck said. “We’d like to see a few more things on the label like the species and how it was caught.”

SeaChoice offers some help for concerned shoppers with their ranking program, which lists various choices as Best, Some Concerns, or Avoid. The SeaChoice website, www.seachoice. org, has an extensive searchable database and also has a wallet-size guide that can be printed off and taken to the store.

Wondering if that salmon sashimi you ordered is wild or farmed?

Unless it is identified in the menu as wild (or sockeye, coho or some other Pacific species), and costs a buck or two more, then you’re likely eating farmed Atlantic salmon.

Can you tell the difference?

Quite easily. Farmed salmon are marine couch potatoes; they spend their lives swimming in a pen, with minimal effort spent chasing down their fish pellets. No wonder their fat content is roughly three times higher than that of their wild Pacific cousins. The difference in texture is obvious: farmed sashimi is soft and flabby, while the wild is firm and dense.

The colour is different too. In the wild, salmon get their vibrant shade from carotenoids in the krill they eat. On the farm, their lighter pink hue is supplied by feeding them synthetic carotenoids. Fish farmers choose just what shade of peach their fish will be from the pharmaceutical company’s colour swatch, like you’d find in a paint store.

Finally, there’s flavour. When eating them side-by-side, there’s no mistaking them.

The wild is sweet and rich; it tastes like salmon. The farmed version is milder, less distinctive. —Deana Lancaster

As our food supply systems have grown to feed millions efficiently and cheaply, we’ve become dependent on a relative few commercial varieties of fruits and vegetables. In the process, thousands of heirloom varieties have disappeared.

A study conducted in 1983 by the Rural Advancement Foundation International compared USDA listings of seed varieties sold by commercial U.S. seed houses in 1903 with those in the U.S. National Seed Storage Laboratory in 1983. The survey, which included 66 crops, found that about 93 percent of the varieties had gone extinct.There are efforts to rescue our food though.

In 1996, the Slow Food movement created an International Ark of Taste, a catalogue of foods that are threatened by industrial agriculture, the standardization and large-scale distribution of global food markets, and environmental degradation. More than 800 of the best-tasting endangered foods from over 50 countries have been added to the ark. Product categories include wild foods, vegetables, fruits and berries, nuts, cereals, cheeses, fish, shellfish, game, livestock, poultry, beverages, honey, spices, syrups, vinegars, preserves, and more.

s a wine region, Chile already enjoys a built-in culture of sustainability, thanks in great part to its natural geographic isolation. Bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Andes to the east, the Atacama desert to the North, and the Antarctic to the south, the world’s longest and narrowest country enjoys a unique topographical buffer that has protected it from some of the worst ravages — including the late 19th century outbreak of Phylloxera that destroyed the French wine industry.

However, the Chileans also walk the sustainable walk, perhaps more than any other country on the planet. They were among the first to introduce a more carbon footprintfriendly, lighter wine bottle.

Even some of the largest Chilean producers, such as Concha y Toro-owned Cono Sur, have the most advanced organic and biodynamic practices. The winery — which in 2007 became the world’s first to be carbon-neutral — was a proactive organic pioneer, embarking early on environmentally balanced programs.

Instead of pesticides, Cono Sur’s Matias Rios introduced flocks of geese into the vineyard to control destructive pests like the vine destroying “burrito”; planted natural ground covers for weed control, used garlic as a natural repellent, and even encouraged workers to use bicycles instead of motorized transport whenever possible. The latter resulted in the winery’s now familiar “bicycle label,” considered one of the most widely available and affordable organic brands.

Biodynamic pioneer Alvaro Espinoza, who oversees Fair Trade flag-bearer Viña Emiliana’s seven farms in four valleys (in Casablanca, Cachapoal, Maipo, Colchagua and Bio-Bio)

says “We do it as much to protect the people who work in the vineyards as for the wine.”

Emiliana’s flagship Coyam highlights the sense of place, says Espinoza, rather than the six varieties which make up the blend, he suggests.

Chile’s “first out of the gate”approach, combined with its relatively benign environment (often referred to as a “winemaker’s paradise”) has given it a leg up in the sustainable and organic-biodynamic sweepstakes.

Also, the country’s plantings beyond the original Valle Central in developing regions on the coast and at higher elevations in the Andes foothills — first explored by groundbreakers such as Montes — have also assisted in making the transition to more sustainable practices.

While most Chilean wineries already follow sustainable practices, only 14 of the country’s producers have met the new rigorous government-overseen requirements — which examine every aspect of winemaking and packaging — to proclaim their products as “Certified Sustainable Wine of Chile.” If you’re keen to be a sustainable sipper, look for wines from the following Chilean leaders: Anakena, Arboleda, Caliterra, Casa Silva, Cremaschi Furlotti, Emiliana, Errázuriz, Montes, MontGras, Santa Cruz, Santa Ema, Santa Rita, Ventisquero and Vía Wines.

Victory for Greenpeace in anti-GMO campaign

I

t was a battle that took seven years to win. For now.

On one side: Greenpeace International. On the other: GMO rice. The result: Recently, Greenpeace announced a successful end to its antiGMO rice campaign in China.

GMO rice — or rice derived from genetically modified organisms — is the newest in a long line of what Canada’s Agriculture Ministry categorizes under the broad term “novel foods.” These are foods in which the DNA (genetic material) has been modified or changed in a way that is not natural to the item.

The modifications are generally made to make the crop resistant to insects, disease, viruses, or herbicides. Some GMO manufacturers also claim they can make crops healthier, for example by boosting certain vitamins or minerals in certain crops.

In the recent Greenpeace case, the Chinese government had plans to commercialize genetically modified rice crops. Greenpeace was concerned that introducing the modified rice to national and international food markets would destroy traditional farming techniques in China. In the end, thanks in part to pressure from within the country, China appears to have suspended the commercialization of GMO rice.

It’s a victory for Greenpeace, and one that adds to the discussion about genetic modifications found throughout the global food chain. The concept of modifying crops is not new, but methods like cross-breeding take time to transfer desirable traits. Manipulating genes in a lab is faster.

Miso soup is a well-known Japanese dish that is generally made from a combination of fermented bean paste and different versions of stock. The paste is an example of the third type of ingredient Suzuki says is at the heart of healthy Japanese cooking. Fermented bean products, from soy and other beans, offer vitamins, proteins and minerals, and are commonly found in the form of tofu, soy sauce, or miso.

A fourth staple in traditional Japanese cooking is white rice, although Suzuki notes the variety used in Japan is not as processed as the white rice typically found in North America. White rice is a refined grain that is made by removing the bran and germ portions of brown rice. During processing it loses many of its beneficial nutrients, so many Japanese families are now including brown rice as a healthier choice.

Also impactful, the Japanese breakfast is a much healthier start to the day: a combination of rice, fish, vegetables, or miso instead of the often bread-based breakfasts eaten in Canada.

Consumer concern over genetically modified crops has been on high alert

since their introduction to commercial food markets became public around 1994. Today, tomatoes, corn, milk, soy, and canola oil are among the types of food products most often genetically modified, and consumers are still taking a cautious approach.

According to the CIA World Factbook, the average overall life expectancy at birth for Japanese residents is 82.25 years.

North Vancouver cooking instructor Kimiko Suzuki suggests four staples are at the heart of a healthy traditional Japanese diet.

The first is fish, especially what is commonly referred to in Japan as “blue” fish. So-called because of the slight blue tint in their skin, blue fish include mackerel and sardines. Suzuki notes these fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids, reported to benefit numerous body functions, as well as lower LDL (“bad” cholesterol) and reduce inflammation.

Another important element is dried ingredients: mushrooms, daikon (white radish) and sea vegetables, notes Suzuki.

Delta man, 80, died weeks after being beaten with bats and nobody is being charged in his death ViewPoint Tom Zytaruk

S

omething stinks about the way that the Delta police and Crown prosecutors’ office have responded to the death of Gerald McDonald.

The 80-year-old man died of a heart attack a couple of weeks after being savagely beaten with bats outside his home in North Delta.

Not only is nobody being charged with murder or manslaughter –

despite the coroner having declared McDonald’s death a homicide – nobody is being charged with any crime related to the attack on this poor soul.

One person – Gregory James Smithies, 51 – has been charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace, for allegedly swinging a bat at the head of a neighbour who tried to intervene.

McDonald’s assault was the climax of a pathetically banal disagreement over who had the right of way along the street in front of his house – a teenage couple who’d been out for a stroll, or the

old man’s son David, who’d been out walking his dogs.

As is all too common in this era of post-courtesy, this silly spat went from zero to 200 in a blink. The couple left, allegedly returned with the girl’s dad (of all people!) and metal bats, and all hell broke loose.

Here’s how it went down, according to a neighbour who saw the whole bloody business unfold.

Nikki Furber, who lived across the street, saw Gerald McDonald yelling at these people to get out of his yard.

“One of the guys, I don’t know if it was the dad or the kid, started hitting the man with the bat, and then the two other girls started

just booting him and everything,” Furber recalled.

She said she heard “at least five to seven whacks on the back – crack, crack, crack – on the old man.”

“I was yelling ‘Just stop, he’s an old man!’”

Furber’s partner, Rick Moreau, came outside and headed toward her. “I could see somebody on the ground being swarmed,” he said.

“He had blood all over him.”

When his wife turned back toward their house, Moreau recalled, the eldest of the attackers swung the bat at her head, missing it by about four inches. see YES, BRUTAL › page 3
