SURREY – The Surrey RCMP has a “robust” security plan in place to deal with controversial former U.S. president George W. Bush’s speaking engagement Thursday at Surrey’s annual Regional Economic Summit in Guildford. Bush, former U.S. president Bill Clinton and other keynote speakers will be at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel, speaking to about 500 people who’ve paid $599 apiece. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts will chair the event. B.C. Premier Christy Clark will also attend. According to the City of Surrey’s website, the two former U.S. presidents will be sharing their “invaluable perspectives on the new realities facing North America and the world’s major economies.” But the media, along with protestors and anyone else who has not been screened by police and event organizers, will not be permitted into the hotel. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Drew Grainger said hotel guests, staff and even delivery people have been security screened. “It’s all part of our intelligence plan, absolutely.” At least several hundred protestors – including representatives of groups that accuse Bush of having committed war crimes during his presidency
