SURREY – Despite increasing pressure from critics who are outraged that George W. Bush is scheduled to speak in Surrey, Mayor Dianne Watts said she will not cancel Bush’s appearance. The former U.S. president is scheduled to speak at the Surrey Regional Economic Summit on Oct. 20 at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel. The outrage leading up to the summit is not surprising to some – around the country, a similar tune is ringing. Hundreds of people showed up to the Vancouver Club Monday to protest former U.S. vice president Dick Cheney’s appearance, yelling at police as well as insulting and shoving guests at the event. And a Sept. 20 Bush appearance was cancelled in Toronto at Tyndale University College & Seminary after students launched a petition saying, “Tyndale is hosting a war criminal.” Gail Davidson, a Vancouver-based lawyer with Lawyers Against the War, is asking Watts and organizers of the economic summit to cancel Bush’s appearance. see WATTS SHOULD › page 4
