With a clean cut of red ribbon, the West Cambie Children’s Centre was opened Thursday morning, the final piece to the Remy facility at Cambie and Garden City roads.

The development, lauded for its dedication to creating a mixed-use and mixed-income building with both affordable housing and senior-specific units, has been turning over keys to new homeowners since the beginning of March.

“There’s been a lot of change in the perception of a community,” said Dana Westermark, president of developer Oris Consulting Ltd. “The West Cambie neighbourhood developed primarily as a residential area, so there was a need for services.

“Rather than separate these services into a separate commercial quadrant, it’s better to integrate them throughout the neighbourhood.”

The inclusion of a daycare facility was an added value for young families in the development and surrounding neighbourhood, according to Westermark.

In addition, a grocery store will soon be built across the street.

Little Pilots’ wings clipped Daycare closure shouldn’t affect Sea Island elementary

The YMCA-run Little Pilots Daycare may be grounded at the end of June, but that will not affect the foreseeable future of Sea Island Elementary school where it has operated from for the past 24 years.

Mark De Mello, secretary treasurer with the Richmond School District, told the Richmond News the closure of the daycare is not expected to change matters for the 40 students enrolled in the two, combined classes that serve kindergarten to Grade 1, and Grades 2 to 3.

Students in Grades 4 to 7 who live in the school’s catchment area are bussed to Brighouse Elementary.

“The closure of the daycare itself will not have an impact on the continued operation of the school,” De Mello said. “The school serves the needs of the community, and unless there’s a dramatic change in those needs, there’s no reason for us to change our approach for this school.”

DeMello added that based on discussions with the Sea Island community, the district does not foresee a large drop off in enrolment numbers.

“Every indication that we have is that for at least the next few years enrolment is expected to be fairly consistent,” he said. “We’ll have numbers that are sustainable.”

Also remaining steady is the number of adult learning programs which use spare classroom space at the school.

Currently, there are no immediate plans to replace the daycare with another tenant. But De Mello said he suspected that once news of the Little Pilots facility shutting its doors becomes more widespread, another daycare could step in and fill the void.

But that may be hard to do since the YMCA cited dwindling enrolment as the main factor in closing Little Pilots.

significantly changed over the years, which has resulted in the community’s needs changing,” said Kim Hempler, operations manager with YMCA Childcare.

At the moment, Little Pilots has 10 students, just under half the 25 the facility is licensed to accommodate in the three to five age group.

“Knowing what enrolment would look like for September, that the demand for childcare at the site just wasn’t there, basically,” Hempler said, adding there were thoughts of broadening the daycare’s services by offering before and after school care to boost numbers.

“But we didn’t find a demand there for that,” Hempler said.

The coming closure has left some families in

the lurch looking for daycare over the summer months. One parent sizing up options is Cara Zannotto whose five-year-old son Jeremy has attended Little Pilots for the past two-and-a-half years.

“A lot of the parents are frustrated that there isn’t continuous care,” Zannotto said. “I understand if enrolment is down, but the kids are now in flux for two months.”

Zannotto said when she heard the daycare was closing she called the facility’s director.

The vehicles — a black 2013 Porsche Panamera, a white 2012 BMW 750 and a white 2013 BMW M5 — were reported to be travelling between 130 and 160 km/hour.

Police received reports that the vehicles were weaving through traffic and using the right hand shoulder to overtake other cars, said Corp. Rob McDonald, of the Lower Mainland District Traffic

Services.

Police officers with Port Mann Traffic Services staged themselves on 176th Street on-ramp and observed as the vehicles sped past.

All three drivers were stopped and all three vehicles were impounded for seven days and the drivers were issued 15 days driving prohibitions and violation tickets for speed related offence and driving without consideration.

It was also built using wood, a renewable resource — though a point of controversy in 2011 when a fire burned the construction site to the ground.

Westermark assures the current building is fitted with modern fire safety and an integrated sprinkler system comparable to any concrete building.

The development has 258 suites in total, 33 are affordable housing units and 48 are to be rented at near-market rental rates for seniors.

Westermark exceeded the five per cent requirement, however, most developers do not.

“The five per cent requirement is quite low compared to other communities, which I’ve heard go up to about 15 or 20 per cent,” said Whalen.

But the amount of required affordable housing versus development is a balancing act for the city.

“I’d compare the outcomes in those other municipalities to see how many units are being produced,” said a city spokesperson.

“We have a more aggressive affordable housing strategy.”

Since 2007, 1,697 affordable units have been secured.

In a bid to put an end (for a week at least) to trash-talking, two Steveston business owners — The Barber Shop’s Iain Mackelworth and Bean & Beyond Café’s Davood Khatami — went head-to-head in a six-a-side game at Sportstown last Saturday.

Introduction The City of Richmond has a rich farming history and continues to support agricultural viability.

The City is updating the 2006 East Richmond Agricultural Water Supply Study for the Agricultural Land base east of Highway 99. The study will create a prioritized list of drainage and irrigation infrastructure upgrades that will support farming. Projects will be implemented through the City’s Five Year Capital Plan.

Richmond Fire-Rescue is taking the phrase “strike while the iron’s hot” and running around the city with it.

The fire department has decided, in the immediate aftermath of a fire, it will bombard the surrounding area with fire prevention flyers.

It believes there is no time like the present when trying to deliver the fire safety message.

And it tested that theory to the full recently after a significant house fire on Azure Road in central Richmond, when it handed out around 500 fire safety flyers to the community.

“It’s about connecting with the community and we realized this was a great opportunity to reach people when they’re fully engaged,” said deputy fire chief Kim

Howell.

“These are the times that people are really switched on to fire safety and it’s a great chance to answer questions on fire safety and give out advice.

“It’s a time when people also realize that this could happen to them and that’s when they’re more open to taking measures to stop it happening to them.”

Howell said the Azure Road fire in February was a classic example of a house with far too many combustible materials packed into the one area, a situation that was dangerous to the homeowner and for attending firefighters.

The distribution of fire safety flyers in the aftermath of an incident ties in with the department’s goal to drive fire prevention in the community, added Howell.

Expect to see Richmond Fire-Rescue flyers circulating in your neighbourhood in the wake of a fire.

Open House An open house will be held on Thursday, April 18 regarding the East Richmond Agricultural Water Supply Study update. The project team will be available to discuss the study and to gather feedback from Richmond farmers and residents.

The construction of an additional crosswalk at the intersection of Garden City Road and Granville Avenue has recently been completed.

This new crosswalk includes a new traffic signal and overhead advanced warning flashers for southbound to westbound vehicles along the Garden City Road and Granville Avenue transition.

Southbound motorists should be prepared to stop at this location when a “walk” phase has been activated by a pedestrian and/or cyclist.

Smart calls favour Dix, so far

A

drian Dix made two moves this week that should make Christy Clark feel more antsy than ever about next month’s election.

The NDP leader closed the door on an invitation to debate Premier Clark one-on-one during the election campaign that gets underway next week — an invitation that the BC Liberal leader had already accepted.

And Dix also made a bold promise to increase provincial tax subsidies to the film industry “when” he becomes premier.

In regards to the (non-)debate, both leaders made the right decision. Clark needs to assert herself as the only alternative to a swing to the left in B.C. politics.

But with opinion polls already heavily in Dix’s favour, there was no way for him to win, and Clark only stood to gain in a debate that precluded involvement of a BC Conservative party that is likely to siphon votes from the BC Liberals’ apparently dwindling supply. The Greens would also have been left out, and while they typically draw from the NDP’s store of votes, they’re not likely to figure as significantly this time around.

The decision to increase subsidies to the province’s “creative” industry — actually referring to movie and television production — also sets Dix apart from Clark, who is seen (legitimately or not) as having sat on her hands while other parts of Canada and the United States have sweetened the pot for filmmakers, impacting negatively on B.C.’s billion-dollar share of that industry.

Those who oppose the subsidy hike — from about 35 up to 40 per cent on wage costs — on the grounds that taxpayers shouldn’t have to shoulder those costs might note that it’s miniscule compared to the subsidies annually poured into resource industries and other corporate recipients.

Dix’s decisions were good, both economically and politically. Now it’s Clark’s turn.

Will museums go head-to-head?

The Editor, Re: “Who said we need ‘destination’ museum?” Letters, March 29.

First of all, I wish to thank Maria Kwong for her thouhtgful and insightful letter to the editor.

I am in full agreement as I am sure many of Richmond’s residents are, thank you. But to put a finer point on it, the bureaucracy never sleeps. Public service, or self serving, that is the question? City staff dream up the wish list and consultants sell it.

My crystal ball says a new manager is waiting in the wings.

Will the proposed Olympic Museum be going head-to-head with this city museum, competing for paying customers? Rosy predictions of breaking even on costs have still not materialized from past experiments.

With the track record of the Olympic oval and a city council jumping for joy at museum building, the vote on April 8 was pretty much assured. Only Harold Steves seems to be paying attention to the costs of these monoliths compared to bureaucratic survival and advancement.

Where’d my 10-minute attention span go?

My overall mental health got a boost last week while I was on vacation.

I moved, which meant that for six days, I had neither cable television nor Internet, or email access of any kind.

You would think that this situation might lead to some serious withdrawal symptoms, like twitching, night terrors, hallucinations of giant bug-headed babies (or baby-headed bugs), random yelping and spontaneous limb self-removal.

Nope. Moving will keep you busy, of course, and after I’d unpacked a sufficient number of boxes, I would lie down with a book.

I finished Anathem, by Neal Stephenson, a book which is the exact opposite of the click-click-click short attention span style of modern, wired life.

Anathem is 900 pages long. Then it has three appendices. It’s a science fiction novel in which characters can debate the Platonic nature of the multiverse for six or seven pages at a stretch.

Then there might be a kung fu fight or a volcanic eruption. It’s that kind of a book.

I love reading novels, probably the quintessential long-attention-span activity.

Before the move, I told a couple of people that I had finished packing my books, which meant I was around 70 or 80 per cent done all of my packing.

who have seen my place, just nodded.

More casual acquaintances gave me strange looks.

Unfortunately, I feel like the world is conspiring to chip away at my attention span. As I write this, the little email icon on my desktop is bouncing up and down as frantically as a toddler sitting on an anthill.

New messages, junkmail, whatever. Nine tenths of it gets tossed straight into the trash. I have RSS readers to check for news, there are Google alerts flying, and I’m always keeping an eye on Twitter and Facebook.

Yes, around here, messing around with social media is part of the job description, not something to do when the boss isn’t looking.

Also, sometimes people call me for a form of voice communication on something called a “landline telephone.”

Essentially, it means I’m seldom doing anything for more than about 10 minutes at a time.

Beyond work, I’m perfectly capable of distracting myself with my toys.

Ever sat down, clicked on an Internet browser, and

realized three hours later that only your mouse-hand has moved?

Every stray thought that runs through my head can now be answered.

When was cheese invented? Who fought the last judicial duel in England? Has anyone built a house entirely out of Lego?

Does Coke ever go bad?

How many Top 40 hits did Meat Loaf have? I love having the ability to get at any of this information at any time of the day or night.

But while it satisfies my curiosity, it’s doing nothing to get me any exercise or help me do anything productive — at least until I get that slot on Jeopardy!

Too much time on the Internet can leave me twitchy, jerky, feeling strange and out of sorts.

It’s after too much of this time spent online that I really need to decompress.

My six-day Internet-free zone did a really good job of smoothing out the rough, scratchy parts of my brain.

Now, I’m plotting ways to help support my reading habit instead of feeding my Internet trivia bingeing habit.

In particular, I’m thinking of getting a nice deck chair for the summer, next to which I can place a tall, cold drink, and a taller stack of books.

Join in the celebrations The Editor, April is a very important month for the South Asian community in general and Sikhs in particular.

For them, it is a festive and holy celebration. In the Punjab province of India, it is the beginning of the harvesting season.

Before starting the season, people celebrate. According to the Punjabi calendar, the harvesting season begins in the month of Vaisakh.

As such, the festival is named Vaisakhi.

For the Sikhs, Vaisakhi marks the birth of the Khalsa. Khalsa means the “Pure One”.

Throughout the month of April, Vaisakhi will be celebrated by the Indo-Canadian community in the Metro Vancouver area with a lot of enthusiasm. More than 100,000 enthusiastic members of the community will take part in each of the Vaisakhi celebrations (Nagar Kirtans) — in Vancouver on April 13 and in Surrey on April 20.

A very unique feature of these celebrations will be the excitement and enthusiasm of the participants. Furthermore, there will be free Indo-Canadian food, delicacies, water and soft drinks will be available to the participants and bystanders all along the Nagar Kirtan (procession) routes.

On both of these occasions, it will be an impressive display of this country’s proud policy of inclusion and multiculturalism.

Highway and the India Cultural Centre of Canada’s Nanak Niwas Gurdwara on No.5 Road — will be the hubs of activity throughout the month.

Also, East Richmond Community Association and South Arm Community Association will be collaborating again to celebrate Vaisakhi at South Arm on April 22.

Richmond Multicultural Community Services will be celebrating Vaisakhi on Wednesday, April 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Caring Place.

It was on April 13, 1699, that the 10th and the last of the Sikh gurus, Guru Gobind Singh (1666-1708), created the Khalsa. In a sense, Guru Gobind Singh redefined Sikhism as a spiritual, military and political force.

Sikhism, incidentally, was founded by the first guru of the Sikhs, Guru Nanak Dev (1469-1535). Guru Gobind Singh reinforced Guru Nanak’s vision of a society free of caste, inequality, discrimination, prejudice and superstition.

Today, more than 26 million Sikhs worldwide, including more than half a million in Canada, take great pride in celebrating this historic occasion.

This year marks the 314th anniversary of the birth of the Khalsa. By all accounts, these celebrations are a great credit, not only to the Sikhs, but also to this beautiful country of ours. Happy Vaisakhi!

More than 40 of Richmond’s finest firefighters were recognized for their service by the city last weekend.

Federal Exemplary Service Medals were awarded to 22 Richmond FireRescue employees with 20 and 30 years of service, 10 years of which was served while performing duties involving potential risk.

The Provincial Long Service Recognition medals were awarded to 13 employees who achieved 25 and 35 years of service and had made “significant contributions to the protection of persons and property.”

Graduation certificates were also awarded to nine employees for successfully completing the recruit training program and one year probation.

“Richmond Fire-Rescue has experienced significant renewal and growth over recent years and we are now one of the leading departments in the areas of recruiting for diversity, exceptional training as well as effective and integrated emergency service delivery,” said Fire Chief John McGowan.

Vancouver International Airport has been named the Best Airport in North America for the fourth year in a row.

YVR bagged the title yet again at the Skytrax World Airport Awards in Geneva, Switzerland on Wednesday.

And the airport rated eighth overall worldwide and was the only one in North America to make it into the top 10.

The awards are voted for by passengers and YVR’s accolade is “testament to… (the) more than 23,600 people who work on YVR’s Sea Island home every day: a true community,” according to the airport.

Did he lose the Will, or destroy it?

Animo Revocandi is the legal presumption that applies to a Will that was in a deceased’s possession but was not found at the time of the person’s death. The Will is presumed to be destroyed with the intention that it be revoked.

In the recent case of Thierman Estate v. Thurman (reasons released last month), the Will was done in 2006, and the Solicitor involved sent the completed Will to the deceased, who apparently put the original in his safety deposit box. Days before he died, the deceased again went to his safety deposit box. After he died and the box was opened, the Will could not be found.

Other searches also were unsuccessful. No other or newer Will was found. In holding that the deceased most likely destroyed his Will (thereby revoking it), the Court took into account that the deceased was an intelligent, organized man. The evidence pointed to the Will being in the deceased’s possession, and to the primary beneficiary not caring well for the deceased. The deceased was held to have died intestate.

This is an unusual case, because one doesn’t expect such a person (an engineer, in this case) to necessarily behave so casually with a Will – particularly where the Estate is not small. Poor planning led to litigation. The deceased probably should have just contacted his Solicitor and made a new Will.

Farm society searches for new home PHOTO SUBMITTED

A community farm has been forced out of its base of operations, and it’s looking for all the help it can get to build a new home.

The Sharing Farm Society is a group of local volunteers who grow vegetables and harvest produce to give to charitable food organizations.

Its home base, or the Hub as they call it, was a garage it acquired back when it was established in Terra Nova.

“The sharing farm hub had been a garage and it was a property that was donated to the city several years ago, and we were specifically told by the city that it was absolutely off limits,” said Gretchen Frazer, the Sharing Farm, marketing and communications.

“One of the founders of the farm said, ‘Well, can we store one thing,’ and that sort of grew from there. [The city] said ‘Okay, you can store one thing’ and then the next thing the city knew we were running all of our field operations out of the garage,” she laughed.

But as they soon found out, the garage was never meant for storing such large amounts of produce and vegetation. It soon became not only a hub for

The garage was beyond renovation and a complete rebuild was deemed necessary, something that is far more expensive than the original renovation plans.

They are looking at an approximate cost of $100,000 for the overhaul, while the entire farm budget for the year is only $80,000.

For now they are running make shift operations out of a rental storage container and are on the lookout for a construction company to take on the rebuild as a community project on their existing budget.

Over the last five years, you’d be hardpressed to find a more successful Richmond soccer team than the Richmond Red Devils.

However, with all of their recent success, nothing could have prepared them for what they were in store for this year.

After being promoted to a new division, the Red Devils started off their season with three consecutive games without a win and only picked up one out of a possible nine points.

“At first we were all excited to move up, and then after three games were kind of like ‘Oh My God, what did we get ourselves into here,’” said Kylie Blue, one of the longestserving members of the Red Devils. “It was a feeling we weren’t really used to.”

Then on Nov. 11, with the team still trying to put it all together, they were dropped a bomb that nobody was prepared for.

“When we found out Jean had cancer again, everything changed,” said Punky Oye, another long-term member.

Jean Fletcher was the team mom and manager, and had been with the team since its inception. Her presence in the Richmond Youth Soccer Association (RYSA) goes back nearly 20 years and she was a commonplace sighting every weekend at games in Richmond.

Prior to being re-diagnosed with ovarian cancer, Fletcher had spent the last year in remission since December of 2011.

“We were coming off last season and feeling pretty good about Jean being in remission,” said Oye. “There was that sense of encouragement, knowing that she had beaten cancer. Then, when we found out that it had come back, it really hit hard.”

For the Red Devils, she was more than

just a manager. She was their mentor. Their friend. Their “team mom”.

Upon hearing the news, they dedicated their season to Fletcher.

They wore commemorative patches on their shorts — a red heart with the letter “J” inside.

“We’ve never had anything more inspiring to make us want to win,” said Caitlyn Lee, the Red Devils team captain. “She was our rock. As this whole process went on, we all grew so much closer together as a team.”

With Fletcher in attendance for most of the games, the girls put together a run that saw them go 10 straight games without a loss and eventually qualify for the Provincial Championship.

“There was definitely a before and after point in the season, and I think Mom being re-diagnosed with cancer was it,” said Mark Fletcher, head coach, about his mother.

“The season took on a new feel. They were playing for her. On Sundays, she was their mom, too.”

On Feb. 22, Fletcher’s fight came to an end as she passed away from cancer at the age of 62. It was a loss felt around Richmond, especially in the soccer community. The week after she had passed away, the Red Devils clinched a berth in the Provincials with a 1-0 win.

“She was a life mentor to so many of us.

Our team is like a family and Jean’s a big reason why,” said Lee. “We want to win this [Provincial Championship] so bad for her.”

On April 13, the team will begin their march for a second provincial title in four years, in a season that none of them will forget.

Students bare fashion design souls at grad show

While their educational goals may have been cut from the same cloth, 35 students from Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Fashion Design program will be eager to put their own stamp on the catwalk next Wednesday evening (April 17).

That’s when the group, including four from Richmond, will be displaying their apparel collections at The Show, which caps four years of study at the Lansdowne Road campus.

Each will be given about 80 seconds for models to show their work on stage.

And getting ready for that brief exposure has involved much more than the years at school, said the students who have spent the better part of their lives developing and refining their skills.

“I was always leaning towards the creative arts when I was growing up,” said Vivian Mui, 21.

“My parents have a really big love for fashion, and they really influenced me a lot while we were traveling. We’d go to a lot of shops, so that rooted in me that clothing was something that was really beautiful and a creative way to go.”

Mui said she remembers spending plenty of time wandering the aisles with her parents in fashion-focused stores such as Holt Renfrew and Leone, “and just absorbing their tastes into my own aesthetic.”

As a result, much of her collection is classic in design and can carry over from season to season, “because that’s the way my parents shopped.”

Mui already has a job — she is working at the clothing brand Kensie as a technical design assistant — and is excited to see what’s in store for her future in fashion.

“It’s also a really strange time because everyone is trying to come up with new goals for themselves because we’ve all reached the big hurdle of graduating, and so, what’s

Also starting young in the artistic and creative world was Sarah Fairweather.

“I’ve been around sewing since I was a young child. My nana was a quilter, so I think that’s where I initially picked it up,” she said. “But I’ve always wanted to make things.

I was always painting. I would staple together fabric to make clothing.” After graduating, Fairweather plans to earn a Masters degree in Europe, with a view to moving there.

Now with the lights soon to go up on their fashion show, the four are experiencing a myriad of emotions.

“I’m nervous about tripping in heels,” joked Mui of the opportunity the student designers will have to accompany the models on stage at the end of the show.

“It’s quite nerve-wracking because I feel that a lot of us have made these garments but we’ve never seen them on a body, and with producing a total of three garments, there’s concerns about it being cohesive,” she added.

“Will the colours go together, that’s a little scary for me, I think.”

“I’m not so much as nervous about the show. I am really excited to see everyone’s work,” Fairweather said. “I think I’m more nervous for after the show, because then the four years are done.”

“The one scary thing about the show is that it’s going to be viewed by a mass audience of family and friends,” Holyk said. “I think we share design work in school, but I think I’m a little bit more secretive, not sharing it any further than colleagues. So, I think the show is a big step.”

“It’s also scary because other people have a different perspective about what the fashion industry is,” said Cheung. “And for a fourth year collection we are designing for an underserved, niche market.

“So, maybe it’s not the most exciting thing. But we’re trying to fulfill a market and produce something that’s needed. And other peoples’ perspectives are that it’s supposed to be high fashion and not always that practical.”

This is not Dhillon’s first time in the newspaper business. In the 1990s he was part of the group publishing the Asia Pacific Post which had a circulation of 25,000 copies.

“This was during the era of paste-up, negatives and printing plates,” Dhillon said.“We’d be in the office for two or three days at a stretch trying to meet deadlines.”

The long hours of the publishing business began to take its toll and Dhillon

opted to change gears dramatically and run a restaurant called the City Bistro located across from Vancouver City Hall at 12th Ave. and Cambie Street.

“It was fantastic, only the hours were too long, and my kids at the time were too young. I would leave at 6 a.m. and wouldn’t come home until midnight because we served breakfast lunch and dinner.”

Armed with the experience of being an independent business owner Dhillon joined the News.

Now, he takes great satisfaction in being able to deliver effective advertising strategies.

“Based on my experience in the business world I tell my clients about things such as advertising frequency and how to target their customers,” Dhillon said.“And when it works for them, man that’s a great feeling.”

That sense is heightened for Dhillon who over the years has become close with many of his customers.

“That’s a really great part of my job. A lot of them have become good friends.”

t was a time when disco was sweeping the land and General Motors was rocking to a new beat with the introduction of its second-generation “pony” car.

During the early part of the 1970s, performance cars would be hot, although perhaps not as fast or quick as they were at the peak of the muscle car era in 1970. By the mid1970s, speed and horsepower would be fond memories.

The second-generation Camaro made its debut early in 1970 (production problems delayed introduction from fall of 1969) with much acclaim from the automotive press. It had a buff new body and an all-new high-performance 1970 1/2 (remember, it was late) Z/28 package.

The first-generation Z/28, introduced in the fall of 1966 and running until 1969, had carved its own niche with the famous 302-cubic-inch V8, which made them legal (and necessary) for the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Trans Am racing series.

By 1970, a change in the SCCA rules allowed destroking larger engines to meet the 305-cubic-inch maximum. Not only did it mean Chrysler could shorten the crankshaft stroke of its new 340-powered Challengers and ‘Cudas to meet competition guidelines, but Chevrolet no longer needed the high-revving, soft-on-torque 302 on the street.

Instead, it took advantage of the rules and switched to a new, Scan page to see video of Steve Murphy street-friendlier 350-cube motor talking classic cars. (which was destroked to 305 cubes for racing) that made 360 horsepower and the Z/28 a lot more fun to drive. The engine - the infamous LT1 - was pretty much the same as the one powering the Corvette that year, although the ‘Vette made 10 more horses.

It came with a four-barrel carburetor, 11:1 compression ratio, plus all the performance goodies found in the Chevy parts bin - solid-lifter camshaft, heavy-duty radiator, dual exhaust, and, since the Z concept was always as much about handling as it was horsepower, a special performance suspension consisting of larger sway bars and beefier springs.

The LT1 in the ‘70 1/2 Z/28 made most of the engines in the Chevy lineup green with envy, right down to the 250-cubic-inch inline six-cylinder that found its way into a surprising number of models of the svelte-looking Camaro coupe. The only thing with more moxy (at least in terms of peak numbers) was the 375-horsepower 396-cubic-inch V8, available for ‘70 only, but not in the Z/28. see Camaro page 25

Compared to the 1969 models, the new car was given a complete face-lift with a square, egg-carton-style grille and a wider, longer footprint. The basic chassis would remain the same through the 1981 model year.

Young drivers fell in love with the car, with its fresh, new look and great handling characteristics. But, storm clouds quickly appeared on the horizon in the form of gasoline shortages and tougher pollution regulations.

The very next year saw a reduction in the compression ratios of all GM’s performance engines. The Z/28’s power dipped to 330. By 1972, GM changed its rating system from “gross” to “net” (power with all the accessories hooked up and running) and horsepower sagged to 255, although it was essentially the

same engine. The post-muscle-car-era gap slowdown was beginning to show.

The Z/28 would return in 1977 as a full model rather than an option package. But then, the car had become a paper tiger. It still had the 350 engine, but power barely scratched the 200 mark.

Not until 1993 did the Z/28, with the rebirth of the LT-1 designation, although with a hyphen this time, regain some of its firebreathing glory. By then, disco was gone, punk rock was in, and the whole generation of Boomers had moved on to drive sport utility vehicles.

But, from 1970-’73, the Camaro, especially the Z/28, boltstered GM’s image, both on the track and on the street. And, for the lucky people who owned one of these great machines, a piece of automotive history — and story telling — will be handed down from generation to generation.

The Richmond Youth Basketball League Celtics turned in a strong showing at last weekendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Basketball B.C. U13 Girls Provincial Club Championships at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

The girls were coming off a successful spring season with a second place finish. They came up just short in an entertaining and competitive game against the South Burnaby Screaming Eagles, falling 35-28.

In round robin play on Saturday, the Celtics defeated the Seymour Storm 37-16 and the Slamma Jamma Orange 43-23, before falling 36-34 Tri-Cities Chaos to finish in first place in their pool.

The Celtics then defeated the Vancouver Bobcats 37-26 in the semi-final on Sunday morning to set the stage for a rematch with league champion South Burnaby.

The Celtics played a closely contested final, leading at the end of the first quarter 11-6 and trailing by just one point at halftime (16-15). The Screaming Eagles took a 24-21 lead into the final quarter and Richmond was unable to make up the deficit.

Richmond blueliner helps Phantom repeat as champs For the second straight year, Richmond blueliner Jodi Gentile has helped the Fraser Valley Phantom capture the provincial Midget AAA girls hockey championship.

The best-of-three final series featured a rematch with the Kelowna Rockets. After going the distance a year ago, the Phantom need just two games to earn the title.

Fraser Valley produced a 2-1 overtime win in game one as Gentileâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s point shot was deflected home by Brianna Keats.

The girls carried the momentum from the big win into game two where they rolled to a 5-1 victory.

Gentile and her teammates are now preparing for the Esso Cup Midget AAA National Championships which the B.C. champions will host April 21-27 at Bill Copeland Arena in Burnaby.

This is the first time B.C. has hosted the event. The Phantom will face the Edmonton Thunder in their opening game. The winner will also be declared Pacific Region champion.

This will be Gentileâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second national tournament of the 2012-13 campaign. She also was part of the U18 Team BC that competed in Dawson Creek back in November.

River Rock becomes Casino Royale at fundraiser The annual event for breast cancer research raised at least $206,000 last week

As 400 well-dressed guests took their seats for the 15th Annual Nite of Hope, gasps of surprise, followed by thunderous applause, greeted event chair Shelley Leonhardt and founder Judi Miller Knapp as they rolled onto the River Rock Casino Resort’s stage in a brand new shiny white BMW convertible.

“Judi and I were the Bond women, if you will, arriving to Casino Royale,” said Leonhardt. “It was so much fun and I could tell the crowd really enjoyed it as well.”

This set the stage for a wonderful evening filled with fabulous food, live entertainment, an eye-popping fashion show and a live auction packed with surprises and over-the-top bids.

This year’s charity gala dinner and fashion show, dubbed Casino Royale, thrilled the audience with its James Bond theme.

The theatre was decked out in chic Bondesque style and the excitement had formally attired guests opening their wallets wide, raising more than $206,000, with monies still pouring in.

Partiers were encouraged to dress up in their favourite 007 finery and many did.

To the delight of the audience, the 50/50 tuxedo-clad gentlemen strutted into the theatre as a video spoof of them playing James Bond in and around Steveston was shown on the large television screens.

Once again, the evening’s auctioneer was Howard Blank, vice president of media and entertainment for Great Canadian Casinos.

Blank fuelled the crowd with addition of extras, such as theatre tickets to upcoming shows and free night stays at the River Rock to the live auction packages, which enabled him to entice attendees to spend even more money — with some of the items going for more than their appraised value.

In the end, the live auction fetched a whopping $27,100.

“He does an amazing job and we so appreciate what Howard and the casino give us … they truly are extremely generous to Nite of Hope,” said Leonhardt.

“She was very real in both her speech and during the Rose Ceremony, when she hugged many of the women who came on stage.

“She told me later how moved she was by the ceremony.”

The Rose Ceremony inevitably brings tears to many audience members. This annual tradition invites breast cancer survivors and breast cancer victims on stage to receive a rose.

Meantime, as the guest speaker as well, Black told the crowd how she was personally touched by breast cancer herself.

“When I was 27, I noticed a lump on my breast and I was sent for a mammogram,” said Black.

“When I went to the clinic, they told me I was too young to have breast cancer and they turned me away.”

Black encouraged everyone in the audience to trust themselves if they suspect a lump and to go for regular mammograms.

But it was Black’s powerful voice and stage presence that really had the crowd cheering.

For founder Miller Knapp, the evening was a culmination of months of sweat and hard work from a dedicated volunteer committee.

incredible donations to support the important research into breast cancer under the guidance of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.”

Peggy O’Brien, who has been on the Nite of Hope committee for years said, “Wow, what an evening. Many hours of hard work from all our volunteers and

executive brought together another amazing gala.

“Thank you to all our guests, donors and sponsors who assisted us in raising the dollars for Breast Cancer Research.

Together we do make a difference!”

Meantime, after two years at the helm, Leonhardt is stepping down as chair, however, she will continue on as a Nite of Hope committee member.

“I feel humbled that for six months of the year, the committee and volunteers all work extremely hard to make that event such a resounding success,” she said.

“It is bittersweet to step down, but I’m proud by how much money we raise each year for such a great cause.”

She paused for a moment and added, “You work all year without thinking about the impact of the night… It never really hits you until it all comes together that evening.”

Leonhardt went on to add: “Every year, I’m also touched and moved by the Rose Ceremony, it always gets to me.”

The Nite of Hope funds much needed research into breast cancer by providing post-graduate research fellowships through the guidance of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Realtor had mammogram during off year, diagnosed

Longtime Richmondite, Debbie Murphy, has been attending the Nite of Hope for 15 years, since Judi Miller took it out of her home and onto a larger stage.

For years, Murphy, 56, said she attended in support of women in her community fighting this insidious disease.

Little did she know that breast cancer would become her reality. With no family history of breast cancer, Murphy was shocked when just before her 54th birthday, her doctor found the cancer in her breast ducts.

“It was spring of 2011, and I wasn’t actually supposed to have a mammogram because I was going every two years,” said the realtor.

“I went in anyway and my doctor told me that if I had not gone for the test, on this my off year, I’d be dead.”

Murphy said her breast cancer was hard to detect “because you couldn’t feel lumps because the cancer was in my breast ducts.”

In the end, because the ducts were riddled with cancer, Murphy opted to have her right breast removed.

A year later, under her doctor’s advice, she had her left breast removed as a precautionary measure.

“When you first hear you have cancer

you go into complete panic mode … the word is in your head constantly,” she said.

For Murphy, one of the ways she dealt with her cancer diagnosis was to join

Abreast in Richmond — a team of women who have all fought breast cancer and compete in friendly rowing competitions.

“It’s been so uplifting for me,” she said.

“We are women all trying to live positively … we come from all walks of life, different professions and all age groups but united by breast cancer.

“It is so inspiring to be part of this amazing group of strong women.”

In the meantime, Murphy said the night’s Rose Ceremony is always an emotional moment for her — remembering and honouring those who have passed away from the disease and those still fighting it.

“It’s hard to go up there and see all these women at various stages of their breast cancer journey,” she added.

“This year, a friend of mine went up and she got so emotional that I was finding it really hard to hold it together and not start crying.”

In addition, Murphy said Nite of Hope really brings to the forefront how prevalent breast cancer is in the community.

“It’s unreal the number of women falling prey to breast cancer,” she added. “To know that Nite of Hope helps by raising money to find a cure; that is reason enough for me to support it every year.”

Michelle Curtis, 33, was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was only 26, with no family history of the disease.

At 26, Michelle Curtis was busy juggling a job and raising two young children.

Breast cancer was the furthest thing from her mind.

When she started to experience pain in her right breast, the 33-year-old said she ignored it for six months.

“There was zero cancer in my family and my mom came from a family of 10,” she said at the end of Nite of Hope last Thursday night.

“But when I told my doctor, whose own wife was diagnosed with cancer two years earlier, that I was having pain in my breast, he immediately made an appointment for me to have a biopsy.”

Initially, the Abbostford resident wasn’t worried, thinking it was probably benign.

“The day my doctor got the results and told me I had cancer, I was shocked,” she recalled.

“I couldn’t believe that me, who was so young and with no family history, could have breast cancer.”

At 27, Curtis underwent six months of chemotherapy, a bi-lateral mastectomy

and another half-year of radiation.

Seven years later, Curtis is healthy and happy to be alive.

“I get to enjoy watching my kids grow up,” she said smiling. “I’m a much stronger person because of the cancer.”

This was her inaugural year attending the Nite of Hope.

“I found out about Nite of Hope from a fellow survivor, Feather Bryce, and she asked me to join her, as Judi Miller had donated her tickets,” said Curtis.

“I decided to attend the Nite of Hope because it is such an amazing experience to be a part of helping find a cure and to see that there are so many people out there who are a part of the research and future of all of us women effected by breast cancer.

“The Nite of Hope has to be the most amazing experience and such a beautiful event … my gratitude to Judi Miller and all of the supporters who attended.”

Curtis was especially moved when the lingerie models came out wearing black cardboard hearts with the names of loved ones they were honouring.

“The whole night was incredibly moving, but to see the models coming out to Cyndi Lauper’s song, True Colors, made me cry,” added Curtis.

Before the curtains rose at the 15th Annual Nite of Hope gala, the women in charge of the fashion show have been busily preparing for this soiree for months.

On the night, backstage is a bevy of activity.

Longtime model and local teacher, Nancy Kisby, is getting a quick hair spray before being ushered onto the stage. Within seconds of exiting the stage, Kisby, 61, is already disrobing and getting ready for her next outfit change.

“I was a dresser when I first started volunteering, but I really wanted to model,” said Kisby. “So, I told Judi to put me on stage. I love getting dressed up and getting my make up and hair done.”

Kisby has been at the theatre since 4 p.m., making sure she knew where her four outfits were and to get her make-up applied.

“We had two rehearsals a few weeks before the show and then a 30-minute one before the show,” said Kisby.

Backstage, dressers are busily zipping and unzipping, buttoning and unbuttoning, rolling up sleeves and fussing over the 20 models until they are runway ready.

“It’s an honour to be part of an event that is so important to our community,” added Kisby. “It’s a highlight of my year to be involved in Nite of Hope.”

Glenda Harrison Mason, owner of Salon Diva, agrees with Kisby.

Backstage at the River Rock Casino Resort last week was buzzing with activity as models had their hair and make up done before the fashion show. Local businesses donated their products and time for the show.

For the last eight years, Mason has been styling the models’ hair.

“Many of our clients have beaten breast cancer or are fighting it right now,” said Mason. “This is our way to

By 9 a.m., some of the models are in the salon getting their hair done. By 4 p.m., with brushes and scissors in tow, the styling team heads to the River Rock Casino Resort.

“We conduct research ahead of time to make sure we give the models new, hip hairstyles,” she said. “Backstage is so much fun; it’s crazy chaos, it’s busy, but we feed off the adrenaline high.”

Meanwhile, Bare Basics Lingerie has been part of Nite of Hope since its inception. Owner Sandy Hosein gave up the reins to her daughter, Nicole Stoltz, six years ago.

“Because we deal with mastectomy patients, it’s not only giving back to the community but to our clients as well,” said Stoltz, adding she also sits on the event’s executive committee. “It’s such an amazing cause.”

By 2 p.m. on the day of the gala, Stoltz and five Bare Basic employees gather European bra and panty sets, all of which have been tagged with a model’s name, in anticipation of the big night.

“The night before I was up until 3 a.m., wrapping the sponsors’ gifts and finishing up gluing glitter on the cardboard angel wings the lingerie models wore,” she said.

In addition, hundreds of hours went into making the rainbow tutus and costumes for the six models’ five costume changes.

“I love taking part in this event and I have a very patient husband who doesn’t mind that the house is filled with glitter for months afterwards,” Stoltz quipped.

“In seriousness, Judi makes it so easy to want to volunteer because her heart is in the right place.”

Another Judi Miller fan is Aldila

Boutique owner, Elif Costello. She came on board six years ago, taking over for Flamingo Row, who put on the show for nine years.

For Costello, it is also very personal.

“My best friend Christina (Antich) was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer at 31,” said Costello.

“Christina is doing better and looking great. Knowing that, in some small way, I contribute to help raise funds for breast cancer research is such a privilege.”

For months prior to the event, Costello approaches her suppliers and together with a small, dedicated band of volunteers, spends weeks putting together 64 outfits for the local models, ranging in age from 18 to 62.

“There are at least five components to each outfit so you can imagine how much time goes into choosing the outfits, then fitting models and then attending two rehearsals prior to the gala,” said Costello.

“Everyone, from the committee to the models to my staff, do it willingly and happily because it’s such a great cause.”

Sadly, Costello told the News that she must bow out after this year.

“It was a very difficult decision to make because I love putting on this fashion show,” said Costello. “However, my husband travels often to Montreal on business and I want to be able to travel with him.”

Costello isn’t walking away completely though. Aldila Boutique will continue supporting Nite of Hope with gift certificates and donations.

In addition, Costello will continue to invite her suppliers to donate to the cause. “I will continue to attend the Nite of Hope because it’s an inspiring night filled with laughter, fun and a few tears,” she said.

Exploring the different types of breast cancer Breast cancer is a universal term to describe several different cancers that form in and around the breasts.

Breast cancer types are generally categorized based on where the illness begins, most often in the ducts or lobules, the parts of the female anatomy responsible for producing breast milk.

About 22,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer in Canadian women will be diagnosed in 2012.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation lists seven different types of breast cancer.

Types of breast cancer

! Ductal carcinoma in-situ (DCIS) This is an early form of breast cancer that refers to the presence of abnormal cells inside a milk duct in the breast.

This type of cancer is generally found during mammograms and is considered non-invasive.

This means it hasn’t spread yet. This makes treatment for DCIS easier than for other forms of breast cancer.

When viewed under the microscope, tubular carcinoma cells have a distinctive tubular structure. There is a very high survival rate for tubular carcinoma. ! Mucinous carcinoma (Colloid): This is a rare condition in which the breast cancer cells within the breast produce mucus. The mucus and the cancer cells join together to form a jelly-like tumour.

The tumours may feel like bumpy water balloons, but some are too small to detect with the fingers. ! Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) This is a rare and very aggressive type of breast cancer that causes the lymph vessels in the skin around the breast to become blocked.

The cancer gets its name from the appearance of a swollen, red and inflamed breast.

Women are advised to get a baseline mammogram in their mid-30s and then annual mammograms starting at age 40.

Early detection is generally vital for any form of cancer and is especially so for breast cancer.

A sold-out event of 200 guests at Fraser Downs Racetrack & Casino in Cloverdale helped trot to success a fundraiser for the annual Nite of Hope event last week.

Held Feb. 24, Harness the Hope raised more than $12,600 for breast cancer research.

Helping contribute to the total was a silent auction with more than 60 items, 50/50 ticket sales, door prizes, a blackjack tournament, a spin and win, and some harness racing action on the track courtesy of a Powder Puff Race.

Decked out in pink, the horses and their all-female drivers got the crowd up on their feet cheering them on to the finish line.

Once the race had finished, the winner was presented with a specially embroidered horse blanket bearing the Harness the Hope logo. Doing the presentation honours was a breast cancer survivor.

In all, it was a very moving day, said Brock Lazaruk, marketing manager at Fraser Downs Racetrack & Casino.

“We try to do a lot of community-based

events,” Lazaruk said, adding the tie-in with the fundraiser is the fact his mother Sherri, a committee member with the Nite of Hope, lost a good friend to cancer.

Plus, the White Rock and South Surrey branch of the Nite of Hope had put their annual event on hold for a year.

“And we wanted to continue our event and still raise money for a good cause, so that’s what connected us with the Richmond group,” Lazaruk said, adding the participation by all those involved in the Harness the Hope is what has proved to be exceptional.

An example of that is the Powder Puff Race, involving the female drivers who usually work as trainers and groomers. They get to show their talents on the track and also collect pledges in their own “race for the cure.”

“They raised a few hundred dollars which was amazing and went to the grand total,” Lazaruk said.

“The Cloverdale community really jumps on board. It’s a single idea that has sprouted and become a really well known and popular event that people look forward to each year.”
