No plans for new NV bus depot

Bus drivers lobby for new facility and at least 23 more NV buses

Jeremy Shepherd jshepherd@nsnews.com

DISTRICT of North Vancouver council needs to work with TransLink and the provincial government to secure a bigger bus depot to aid the under-served bus riders on the North Shore, according to representatives from the transit operators union. “If we had more buses here, at least 125, it would help the local community,” said Raj Janjua, a member of the union and politics committee with Canadian Auto Workers Local 111 who spoke to the District of North Vancouver council Monday night. “It’s a big contribution to the local economy.” There are currently 82 buses serving North Vancouver, well short of the 125 to 150 vehicles necessary for optimum service, according to Janjua. Jury’s police training proposal supported

Jane Seyd jseyd@nsnews.com

A North Shore advocate for the mentally ill is welcoming a coroner’s jury recommendation that police receive more regular training in responding to people with mental illness.

“We consider the police to be key first responders,” said Hershel Hardin, president of the North Shore Schizophrenia Society. But Hardin said knowing that someone is mentally ill is a key piece of information for police responding to a call. “That person will not respond to instructions in the same way that a normal person would,” he said. “They may be quite paranoid. It may be part of their illness. Provision should be made for that.” Hardin was responding to eight recommendations made by a coroner’s jury following an inquest this week into the death of Matthew John Wilcox. See LGH page 5
