Iran frees detained NV journalist

A North Vancouver journalist who was detained in Syria and then Iran for close to three weeks is back home.
Dorothy Parvaz, 39, shared an emotional reuinion with her loved ones at Vancouver International Airport on Thursday. When reporters asked her father Fred how he felt about seeing his daughter, he replied, “I mean, you can’t imagine. It’s great.” Parvaz got in touch with her fiancé and family members on Tuesday night to let them know that she was safe and sound. At the time, she was clearing customs in Doha, Qatar, where she works for the Al Jazeera news network. The reporter has since recounted her days in captivity in a TV interview for Al Jazeera. “Things in Syria are pretty bad,” she said, describing being handcuffed, blindfolded and taken to a courtyard to overhear young men being tortured. “The beatings I heard almost around the clock were savage.” Initially, Parvaz, who holds Canadian, American and Iranian passports, See Reporter page 5
Jailed gun dealer mounts constitutional challenge

A North Vancouver man serving a six-year sentence for weapons charges is challenging the Conservative government’s new law abolishing accelerated parole, arguing that it’s unconstitutional. Christopher John Whaling, 41, is serving his sentence at the minimum security William Head Institution in Victoria, after being convicted of three gun offences last year. Whaling, who used to be a verifier for the Canadian Firearms Registry, was nabbed five years ago as part of a police investigation into a large-scale gun trafficking ring in the Lower Mainland. Police watched as Whaling met a 22year-old Langley man in a recreation centre parking lot and handed him three automatic machine pistols.
