On Sept. 7, 15-year-old Amanda Todd posted a video on YouTube titled My story: Struggling, bullying, suicide, self harm.

One month later, the former Maple Ridge student killed herself.

The suicide has sparked a nationwide cry for help to end bullying at schools and online.

Amanda posted the video to chronicle her struggles with being stalked on the Internet and with being bullied at school.

The video shows a young thin girl with long wavy dark hair using flash cards to tell her story.

It began when – while in Grade 7 – she flashed her breasts on the webcam to someone police are calling a “suspected pedophile.”

Her narrative also told of bullying she received from girls and boys alike, and about moving from one school to the next in efforts to end the harassment.

In the video description she wrote the following: “I’m struggling to stay in this world, because everything just touches me so deeply. I’m not doing this for attention. I’m doing this to be an inspiration and to show that I can be strong... Haters are haters but please don’t hate... I hope I can show you guys that everyone has a story, and everyone’s future will be bright one day, you just gotta pull through. I’m still here aren’t I?” Amanda ended her life a few weeks shy of her 16th birthday.

Her mother Carol, a teacher in Coquitlam, hopes her daughter’s death will open up dialogue to help other people who are going through what her daughter faced.

“My name is Clara. I am six. I have cancer. Leukemia.”

That is what Clara Howorth told a group of people who showed up at the Albion Fairgrounds, despite the rain, to walk in support of kids.

The Wishmaker Walk for Wishes, put on by the Children’s Wish Foundation, started with a five-kilometre walk and was then followed by an afternoon celebration.

Dilly the Clown of Click & Clown led the walk pulling Clara in his circus wagon.

After the walk Clara’s mom, Andrea Howorth, told the crowd how grateful she and her husband Nick are for all the support they have received since they learned their daughter had cancer.

Andrea teared up when she explained how her old friend and classmate Brad Downey – whom she had just connected with on Facebook – had come out to support the walk.

“I came with my whole family. My wife is a teacher and one of her students was just diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” Downey said.

“This is a wonderful cause, we are here to support the community, and to support an old friend,” he added.

Clara had no symptoms before being taken to hospital in February with flu-like symptoms.

Five days later the results came back from a bone marrow biopsy and Clara’s diagnosis: More acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

“A few weeks after we learned Clara had leukemia, we were informed that Clara will be granted a wish. I cried when they called me and asked what her wish would be. Clara has told us that she wants to go to Disney Hawaii and swim with the dolphins,” said Andrea.

And she will, thanks to the Children’s Wish Foundation and events like Wishmaker Walk for Wishes. This year’s event raised $11,370.

“We really enjoyed the day despite the rainy weather. It was a very positive experience for all of us,” Andrea said.

“All the performers, volunteers, and walkers were so friendly and helpful. It meant so much to us that they were there to help raise money to grant a special wish for children like Clara,” she added.

The foundation expects to grant 1,000 new wishes this year, each one an adventure structured to meet the needs of each individual child and family. The Albion walk was one of four that took place across the province.

A couple has been charged with a string of robberies in Maple Ridge, and police allege they had their children in the car during two of the heists.

The series of robberies of convenience stores and gas stations began Monday, Sept.

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are reworking their pet bylaws, so neither targets pit bulls.

Language specifying pit bulls as dangerous has been removed from a proposed Maple Ridge animal control bylaw, while Pitt Meadows council will consider a rewritten bylaw in late November that removes breedspecific language.

The proposed Maple Ridge bylaw defines aggressive and dangerous dogs, but does not include any reference to specific breeds as being aggressive or dangerous. (This bylaw was part of Monday’s workshop agenda, and, depending on council, would be forwarded for approval to a future council meeting.)

The original proposed bylaw would have classified pit bull terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers, and American pit bull terriers as “aggressive” dogs.

The current Pitt Meadows bylaw – originally written in 1992 – defines these breeds as “vicious.”

An aggressive dog in the reworked Maple Ridge bylaw would be one that bites or

harasses other pets or people, but “typically the bite is minor and the aggressive behaviour is not so distressing as to be considered traumatizing.”

A dog would be classified as dangerous if it attacks multiple times or its attack is of a serious nature and the animal control officer believes there might be a “serious threat to public safety.”

There was public outcry in reaction to the original classification in the Maple Ridge animal control bylaw of pit bulls and related dogs as dangerous.

Pit bull owners and supporters hosted a dog walk in downtown Maple Ridge late last month in support of the breeds.

Plane crashes near Pitt Lake

Police, fire, paramedics, and search crews gathered at the base of Pitt Lake after reports that a float plane crashed between 4:30 and 5 p.m.

Monday.

The plane crashed into the water at Grant Narrows, and multiple emergency teams quickly arrived on scene, said Ridge Meadows RCMP Sgt. Warren Krahenbil.

He was able to confirm that the float plane was landing at the time of the accident.

Few other details were confirmed at press deadline. But media reports indicated it was a Cessna 172 with two people on board. There was no word on their condition.

Twitter was reporting, however, one person was rescued by citizens, while another was supposedly trapped. The Canadian Coast Guard hovercraft was on its way to assist.

Carol doesn’t want other children to suffer as her daughter did.

“I have lost one child, but I know she wanted her story to save a thousand more. Amanda was a very caring individual.

She would help others who needed help,” Carol told media.

“One of Amanda’s goals was to get her message out there and have it used as a learning tool for others.”

In putting together her video, which Amanda did on her own, Carol said her daughter wanted to help other young people who are being bullied and to bring attention and education to the problem.

“Amanda wanted to tell her story to help other kids. I want to tell my story to help parents, so they can be aware, so they can teach their kids what is right and wrong, and how to be safe online,” she said.

Carol has launched a trust fund in Amanda’s memory to raise money for anti-bullying awareness education and for support programs for youth with mental health issues.

Amanda was the victim of unrelenting torture.

And the cyberspace stalker was aided by people in Amanda’s real-world life – kids who would share the photos on their cellphones, kids who would gang up to hurl first verbal abuse and then fists at her.

“Everything she said in the video happened over the past two years,” said Carol. “It was horrendous.

I think about it now and I think, ‘Oh my God. How did she survive this long with the pain?’”

As for the person who cyber-stalked her daughter, Carol said the police did get involved.

“Police investigated and investigated. It got traced to somebody in the United States,” Carol was quoted as saying. “But they never found him. Those people are very good at hiding their tracks.”

When asked if police unsuccessfully trailed a suspected Internet child lurer in the U.S., RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen said he could not comment.

“I’m not going to directly comment on what Carol Todd may be providing.

That is for her to speak to, so I’m not in a position to validate it or not,” Thiessen said.

“We are following up every piece of information with the hope that we can gather enough evidence to lay an appropriate charge against those that we feel may have played some

The Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows school district is in the process of establishing “cyber-guidelines” that students and parents will have to review and sign, according to Laurie Meston, deputy superintendent of School District 42.

Some anti-bullying policy and social-media education was in place when Amanda attended school in Maple Ridge, Meston said, but it is impossible to know if the district’s current risk policies could have prevented Amanda from taking her life.

Amanda’s situation “has so many layers to it... it is complex,” she said, adding that to have a dedicated “e-safety” officer in each school is “something that we need to continue to consider, but I’m not sure at this point.”

People don’t realize how much their words can hurt, said SD42 spokesperson Irene Pochop.

“We take these things very seriously,” she added.

“Our focus [now] is to be able to support the students who have been affected by Amanda’s death.”

In June, the school district introduced a program called ERASE (Expect Respect And a Safe Education) Bullying.

It is a 10-point anti-bullying strategy that will help ensure every child feels safe, accepted, and respect-

ed, regardless of their gender, race, culture, religion, or sexual orientation.

The strategy is aimed to help prevent, identify, and stop harmful behaviours by children and adults – whether online, at school, or in the community.

Bruce Cunnings, the district vice-principal of student support services and Safe Schools, said the “training hasn’t come yet.”

In the meantime, 24-hour support and crisis counselling is available to the public at call 604-951-8855.

The City of Pitt Meadows plans to sell a piece of agricultural land to developer Onni for $12.25 million.

The land, which is about 11.5 acres in size (4.67 hectares) is zoned agricultural but it is not in the Agricultural Land Reserve, and last year, the City put out a request for expressions of interest for its purchase.

In the Official Community Plan, the lot at 11431 Bonson Road is designated as medium-density residential.

Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters said she hoped the deal would be finalized by this week.

The sale comes at a good time, Walters added, as the budget will be coming soon for consideration.

Walters said her first priority would be to pay down the City’s debt, which currently sits at $16 million, but the decision lies with all of council.

“Once the deal has been finalized, council will make a decision,” Walters said.

In its request for proposals, the City indicated that the property would be used for townhomes and low-rise residential strata units.

The property should also be developed with some multi-use public amenity or green spaces that can integrated into the City’s trail and greenway plan.

Despite torrential rains Saturday, a few dozen of Maple Ridge’s career and volunteer firefighters were joined at Firehall #1 by close to 500 visitors.

“Attendance was down slightly from previous years, but surprisingly good given the pouring rain,” said assistant fire chief Timo Juurakko.

“It just poured until the last half hour,” he added, noting that usual attendance is between 500 and 700 people for the four-hour event.

“The day was a success; a lot of safety information was handed out, a lot of interaction took place between the firefighters and the community, and there were a lot of smiles!”

In addition to the fire crew that set up information displays around the two-storey hall, firefighters were joined by members of the fire youth academy, mem-

Always handle food with care The recall of Alberta beef from the XL Foods Inc. plant in Brooks has highlighted the need for people to take care when handling food.

It’s important to remember that most strains of E. coli bacteria are harmless.

But strains such as the one linked to the XL beef can be serious, including the possibility of kidney failure. Like some other foodborne pathogens, infection by E. coli O157:H7 can be fatal.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) advises, “Like other foodborne illnesses, the symptoms of E. coli infection mainly involve the gut. Symptoms may vary from person to person, however, they often include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often watery, and may develop into bloody), vomiting, and fever (generally not very high – usually less than 38.5˚C/101˚F).”

Symptoms normally last five to seven days, but some people who get sick from E. coli O157:H7 develop hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can be fatal. HUS is more likely to be serious for children, the elderly, pregnant women, or people with compromised immune systems.

In some people HUS can cause seizures or strokes, and some will need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis.

Others may end up with permanent kidney damage. If you think you are sick with an E. coli O157:H7 infection, call your doctor or get to a clinic.

“Proper hygiene and safe food handling and preparation practices are key to preventing the spread of all foodborne illnesses, including E. coli,” PHAC notes.

Keep food preparation surfaces clean, and wash your hands.

Despite the cases directly related to the current XL recall, there have been no unusual spikes in overall E. coli O157 foodborne illnesses reported across Canada.

If everyone takes proper precautions, it should stay that way.

Marijuana

Spiritual drug answer to problems (CDC)reports that more than 37,000 annual U.S. deaths are attributed to alcohol use alone (this figure does not include accidental deaths).

On the other hand, the CDC does not even have a category for deaths caused by the use of marijuana.

We are delighted that the Union of B.C. Municipalities has taken this stand, but there is more to the issue than just moving $4 billion of marijuana trade from the underground economy into the regular business world.

Once we convinced them it was about getting the message out, they were all on-board. In fact, we ended up having a lot of fun with it, all the while knowing full well we would likely take some ribbing from our colleagues.

While we wouldn’t condemn recreational use of marijuana, we believe that our governments are missing a crucial piece of the puzzle, if their only concern is to legalize it to cut down on the violence that comes from organized crime’s involvement in marijuana trade.

Properly utilized, we believe that marijuana and other spirit plants can reverse some of today’s deep-rooted problems.

Unfortunately, deep and long-standing prejudices make frank discussion of these substances difficult in the public arena.

We hope, after passing the resolution for proactive action and education on the benefits and positive impacts, that spiritual plant medicines can have when treated with respect and reverence they deserve.

Just as the prohibition of alcohol in the 1920s and 1930s failed to stop consumption of alcohol, so has the prohibition of pot failed to stop marijuana consumption.

Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin was at the Maple Ridge Library on Library Appreciation Day recently, where library technician Erin Atkinson showed how books and other material can be accessed on newer technology. Daykin said he has been reading on his iPad, and read six e-books throughout the summer on the new device.

A community barbecue will be held to celebrate people with developmental disabilities and Community Living Month.

A variety of different agencies and families in Maple Ridge, who work together to promote awareness and services for people with developmental disabilities, will put on the event on Oct. 18.

The groups include the school district, community services, Community Living BC, parks and leisure services, Ridge Meadows Recycling – which employs dozens of people with varying abilities – and the association for community living.

There will be free hotdogs and other refreshments, including homemade cookies, at the event on Thursday.

The band Stone Poets will be performing and Dilly the Clown with Click & Clown will make an appearance. The celebration is at The ACT from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bruins play two Two Ridge Meadows Bruins Rugby Club’s teams were in action this weekend.

The men’s squad took on the Chilliwack Crusaders on home turf. After a two-week break from play the team looked slow to start, however as the game went on the Bruins pulled it together with the backline leading the team by their strong play.

The Bruins proved to be too much for the visiting team and came away with a 24-5 victory.

The Lady Bruins lost to the Kelowna Crows in an away game in the Okanagan.

Titans toughen up

The Titans took to the streets of Kanaka last week and competed in the sixth annual Titan Tough Duathalon.

All senior P.E classes at Samuel Robertson Technical participated this year, which made for a very competitive race.

With the running course at Albion Sports Complex, and the ride up through the Kanaka Creek area, the event had a real community feel.

This year’s winner in the boys’ category was Colton Kirki in Grade 12, and the winner of the girls’ race was Sydney Connor in Grade 11.

Sometimes you just have to be comfortable being uncomfortable.

That was one of the many messages Olympic bronze-medal winner Sophie Schmidt told an assembly of soccer fans at Westview Secondary Thursday morning.

“Over the years there have been a lot of hard decisions to make... choosing soccer over school, or choosing school over soccer... For me the biggest thing I’ve learned is to be comfortable being uncomfortable, if that makes any sense,” Schmidt explained.

“Believe it or not, I don’t like running and it’s really uncomfortable but I push through it,” she added.

The Canadian women’s team won the hearts of sports fans across the country in August as

Cat problems tabled at forum

H

omeless and free-roaming cats will be the topic of discussion next month, after the District of Maple Ridge gave $35,000 towards fixing of felines during the next three years.

Maple Ridge SPCA and Katie’s Place shelter are hosting the discussion at Hammond Community Centre on Saturday, Nov. 3.

Cat that aren’t spayed or neutered often experience more health problems than those that aren’t fixed, said Maple Ridge SPCA shelter manager Mark Vosper.

The problem cats are “a mix of stray cats, feral cats, and cats that roam,” Vosper said. In order to combat problems with cats that aren’t fixed, animal groups need to make a plan and

draw a map.

“We need to find out where the problems are,” Vosper said.

“Let’s talk about cats” will take place on Nov. 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hammond Community Centre, 20601 Westfield Ave. Participants must RSVP as seating is limited. Visit mapleridgecats.eventbrite.ca to RSVP.

Some breeds, such as those with floppy ears or hairy ears like cocker spaniels and poodles, may be more prone to ear infections.

Ear infections are painful and many dogs shake their heads or scratch at their ears.

The ear usually becomes red and inflamed and often produces a black or yellow discharge.

As the condition becomes chronic the ears will thicken and the ear canal narrows due to inflammation.

Often owners think the dog has ear mites. Ear mites are a tiny insect that can live in the ears. But, it is more common in kittens and puppies and less common in mature dogs.

Treating the problem involves a veterinarian having a good look in the ear with an otoscope, to examine for any foreign bodies, and to determine if the

Dogs that have ruptured eardrums usually shake their heads severely and need a longer course of treatment to prevent the infection from travelling deeper.

A sample of the ear discharge is often examined under the microscope to see if there are bacteria or yeast present.

Yeast infections are by far the most common and they create very smelly and itchy ears.

It is essential that the ears be cleaned thoroughly to remove all the wax and discharge so the medications can reach the deeper areas of the ear canal.

In severe cases this may need to be done under a general anesthetic.

I always try to determine what the underlying reason may be if a dog

keeps getting recurrent ear infections.

Chronic food allergies or inhaled allergies or even hypothyroidism may predispose a dog to having ongoing ear problems.

With appropriate cleaning of the ear and the proper medication for the right length of time, it is not too difficult to clear up an ear infection in most dogs.

If they tend to produce a lot of wax they may need to have regular cleaning with a proper ear cleaner at home once or twice a week.

Your veterinarian can show you how to do this easily at home.

Always be sure to have a look at your dog’s ears regularly and if they seem red or itchy or producing a lot of wax then it is best to have them seen by your vet as soon as possible to prevent the discomfort of a chronic ear infection.
