Veterans’ haven holds birthday bash The second largest legion in Western Canada, Branch 88 opens its doors to the public on Saturday. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

For 85 years, the local legion has looked out for its veterans. This Saturday, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 88 – the second largest legion in Western Canada – will open its doors to the public to celebrate this milestone. The Royal Canadian Legion was established in 1926 and the Maple Ridge branch was established a year later in 1927. Sixty “returned men” – as veterans were referred to at that point in history – first met on Feb. 15, 1927 in the Agricultural Hall in Port Haney. In the end, there were 41 actual legion members in the first year of operation. They began meeting regularly at various halls and executive meetings were held in people’s homes. The first president was Maj. W.D. Bruce, and in his first annual report in December, he noted that “our wisest accomplishment was in getting the women to form what has proved a very strong and keen women’s auxiliary.” The first legion was opened just after the Second World War, on what is now 117th Avenue, but was then called Thomas Avenue. The building was the former Morris Sheet Metal building. The legion’s second location was on 224th Street and Dewdney Trunk Road in a building that now houses Haney Sewing and Sound. The current location of Branch 88 was opened across the street, in 1989. Before the legion building was constructed on that property, the first housing for veterans – known as the Legion Lodge – occupied the lot. Current Branch 88 president Jim MacDonald said the biggest story as the legion turns 85 is its large membership. While the largest legion in Western Canada, the Calgary branch, draws from a large metropolitan area, Branch 88 in Maple Ridge draws from a population of about 85,000 and still has 2,100 members. Sid and Betty Smith were planning to have lunch in the fireside lounge in the legion on Thursday afternoon – a place

Maria Rantanen/TIMES

Sid Smith is a Second World War veteran. He and his wife Betty have been coming to the legion Branch 88 in Maple Ridge for 16 years. The legion building is home to many artifacts (left and inset) from the various wars Canadians have fought in. they’ve been coming to for 16 years. Sid Smith is a veteran of the Second World War having served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1941 to 1945 as a tail gunner. The Vancouver-born Smith joined the legion in Burnaby and then the one in New Westminster before he and his wife joined the Maple Ridge branch. “This the best legion I’ve ever been to,” Smith said. “It seems to be the best run – it certainly serves the veterans and the community.” Branch 88 gives out about $115,000 a year to charities and sponsors three cadet corps. “I love that the community knows if they’ve got something very good they can contact us and we’ll do our damnest to help,” MacDonald said. The legion provides a “safe place” with a plethora of activities where members can enjoy themselves, MacDonald said. The rules have changed over the years so that one doesn’t have to have a military background to join the legion.

In addition to taking care of veterans and their families, the legion is the “caretaker of military history,” MacDonald said. And while the legion is a non-political organization, they do lobby on behalf of veterans’ rights, he added. Memorabilia from several wars, from First World War, Second World War, the Korean War, Afghanistan, and the peacekeeping mission in Bosnia can be found at the legion, in glass cases and lining the walls. The legion continues to receive donations from families as veterans pass away. The open house on Saturday, June 23, runs from noon to 6 p.m. It will begin with marching on the colours – the legion’s colour parade – a recount of the history of Branch 88, a prayer and laying of a wreath, and then the marching off the colours. At the open house, there will be a membership information booth, a compliment-

ary barbecue with hotdogs, and a cake at 2 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by Chris Haley from 1 to 5 p.m. with oldies and contemporary music. Al Casswell, who served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1968 to 1971, is helping organize Saturday’s events, and he hopes it will draw the younger generation to the legion. “I’m hoping a generation of grandchildren – or even younger than that – would come and have a look and see if there’s anything for them,” Casswell said. Casswell served three terms as president of Branch 88 and now sits on the management committee. Both of Casswell’s parents served in Second World War, and he said he feels he owes it to veterans to support them through his volunteer work at the legion. “Once you get involved, it stays with you,” Casswell said.

In eight hours, Dr. Melinda Merck turned a year-long search for a sociopath into a training lesson for B.C. animal cruelty investigators. Through 30 necropsies, the internationally leading expert on animal forensic sciences was able to determine there was no foul play in a case that Mounties and SPCA investigators have been chasing since the first wave of mutilated cats turned up in the summer of 2011. “We don’t want to throw anybody under the bus – this isn’t taught in vet school,” Merck cautioned Friday. A warning was issued in September 2011, after veterinarians determined a tool must have been used to slice a number of Maple Ridge cats in half. So when the second wave of mutilated Maple Ridge cats started to appear in May of this year, the SPCA called in the expert. Merck’s testimony had been integral in the 2007 dogfighting case against NFL star Michael Vick. Her examination of 10 discarded fight dogs is believed to have led to the superstar’s stint in prison. When Merck arrived in Vancouver last Tuesday – her first availability – it took only one day of examination to determine the cats were killed by a predator, likely a coyote. Merck taught the 10 investigators on hand the telltale signs – triangular defects in bones from the animals’ teeth, and foreign fur caught in the frayed nails of cats from their final struggle. The findings were made with the naked eye, but she didn’t blame the BC SPCA for exercising extreme caution in the first wave of killings. “[The SPCA] did everything right, they sent it to the experts, and the experts reported this is what we’ve got. Forensics isn’t taught in vet school… they’re only learning it if they’ve got textbooks which are brand new.”

MADD Canada, Ridge Meadows RCMP, and members of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows councils unveiled a new program in which 14 signs encourage people to report impaired drivers. The new signs will be erected around town.

Programs keep roads safe

The first offender of the new Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) program was arrested Friday. A 47-year-old Pitt Meadows man had his driver’s licence taken away, and he cannot drive for the next 90 days. In addition, his pickup truck was impounded for 30 days. The new legislation, which came into effect at midnight on Friday, June 15, allows police to prohibit a suspected drunk driver from driving for 90 days. At 8 p.m. police were conducting a road check on Abernethy Way at 224th Street. A 2011 Dodge pickup truck was stopped, and the driver showed signs of being impaired, said Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. “He complied with a breath demand, and the result on the approved screening

device was a ‘Fail’. He declined an opportunity to provide a second breath sample into a second instrument, as per the new legislation. But he declined this right,” explained Dunlop. With the return of the IRP program, police are hoping all drivers get the message not to drink and then drive. “In this case the man will have to find alternate transportation for the next three months. Fines, towing, and vehicle impound fees are around the $4,000 mark,” said Sgt. Dale Somerville.

MADD unveils Campaign 911

A road safety campaign that enlists the help of the public to identify drunk drivers has been launched in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows on Monday. MADD Canada’s Campaign 911 encourages citizens to call 911 to report suspected impaired drivers to police. The two neighbouring communities are amongst the first to unveil the program. Fourteen road signs that promote calling 911 are being installed in locations throughout the two communities.

Mist doesn’t deter aviation enthusiasts Happenings in the sky and on the ground drew plane buffs to Pitt Meadows Airport Day on Sunday. by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com

New to Canada, 17-year-old Tyrone Warth (above) from South Africa was psyched to hold one of a gun on display at a police booth during Sunday’s Pitt Meadows Airport Day.

Rob Mannagh of Pitt Meadows has been to local airport day festivities in past, but this time brought along his twoyear-old son Logan, and five-year-old son Jay, who were having a blast playing with yellow foam planes.

Organizers arranged to shuttle children around in an airplane trainat the local airport Sunday.

Pitt Meadows resident and aviator William Foley (above), and his son Steve – of AerSpace Aviation – had their hobby project on display during airport day Sunday. It’s a replica aircraft that Williams said is 80 per cent of a fullsized Spitfire. Meanwhile, playing with toy airplanes amused Dylan Lowkie of Vancouver (right), who was at Pitt Meadows Airport Day Sunday as part of the BCIT exhibit. He’s a student in the airline and flight operations program.

Torrential rains may have damped attendance at some pilot workshops Saturday at Pitt Meadows Airport, but infrequent sprinkles weren’t enough to keep die-hard aviators and aspiring pilots away on Sunday. The tarmac might have been soaked, and young children invariably still found puddles to splash around in, but the occasional misty rains didn’t stop an estimated 3,000 aviation enthusiasts (about the same number as last year) from pouring into the inner sanctum of the airport Sunday for a glance at current and collectible aircraft, and much more during this year’s Pitt Meadows Airport Day. “We got off to a slow start because of the weather,” but as the morning mist stopped, more and more people turned out, said event coordinator Trevor Sandwell. The free festivities included numerous information booths, antique airplane and car displays, aviation demonstrations and flypasts, entertainment, and even a chance for young children to take a ride on a makeshift airplane train while older kids were given flying lessons and time in the sky. There have been sporadic community-based events held at the airport since an airshow in the mid-1990s – featuring the Canadian Snowbirds. But, the most recent incarnation – know as Pitt Meadows Airport Day – began last year, explained Sandwell. The first year, the event was limited to Sunday’s open house. This year, the event was expanded to include workshops and a dance for pilots on the Saturday, then an expanded event for the public on Sunday. Next year, Sandwell said, there are plans to add a third day of activities, with the addition of a minitradeshow on the Friday.

Albion students help pets in crisis

A group of Grade 7 kids produced kits with oxygen masks to aid animals in distress.

Firefighters at the Maple Ridge fire department have become some of the best equipped in Canada to save a pet’s life in the case of fire. That’s because an ambitious group of Grade 7 students from Albion Elementary and Invisible Fence of British Columbia have donated 14 pet oxygen mask kits to the district’s fire department. The idea to raise money for kits was hatched three years ago when a unique group of fourth graders entered Julie Bearpark’s class. “This group of kids is really special,” said Bearpark, “They had a strong desire to raise money to help others.” The class was inspired by a story Bearpark shared about Dr. Booth, a veterinarian in West Vancouver, who was trying to raise money to buy pet oxygen masks for local fire fighters.

The class decided to follow suit and host a series of fundraisers throughout the year, with the goal of purchasing and donating pet oxygen masks at year-end. As the 2009 school year concluded, the class was disappointed to discover the $650 they raised would only purchase a few kits. “So the money sat in a savings account with the hope that the following years’ fourth grade would pick up where this class left off,” said Bearpark, “but that didn’t happen.” Nearly three years later, assistant fire chief Timo Juurakko, who heard about Bearpark’s class, read about Invisible Fence Brand’s Project Breathe, a program established with the goal of equipping every fire station in North America with pet oxygen masks. Juurakko suggested the two combine donation efforts. The idea paid off in a big way and they produced a 14-kit donation, enough to equip every fire truck in Maple Ridge, with one kit to spare. “These masks allow Maple Ridge

firefighters to give oxygen to pets who are suffering from smoke inhalation when they are rescued from fires,” explained Juurakko. “If family pets are involved in a house fire, owners are terribly stressed and tempted to run back into a burning home to try and save a pet. It’s understandable, but extremely dangerous. These masks will give residents comfort in knowing that we can aid their pets if they are suffering from smoke inhalation after being rescued by firefighters.” “When a family suffers the tragedy of a fire, lives are turned upside down,” said Patsy Pattison, owner of Invisible Fence British Columbia. “We realize that humans are the first-priority, but in many cases pets can be saved if firefighters have the right equipment,” said Pattison. “Project Breathe is simply a way of giving firefighters the tools necessary to save pets’ lives.” The company has set up a website, www.invisiblefence.com/O2, where people or companies can support the effort.

Flasher arrested for exposure to teens by Sylver McLaren

smclaren@mrtimes.com

A 65-year-old Maple Ridge man has been charged after allegedly exposing himself to two teenagers. The suspect is known to police for this type of behaviour, said Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. Just after 10 p.m. on Wednesday two teenage boys were walking in the 21600 block of Dewdney Trunk

Road when a red Toyota Land Cruiser turn onto the street in front of them. “As they approached the street they saw a man standing on the corner exposing himself. They crossed the road and continued walking east,” Dunlop explained. “The same vehicle again turned onto the street in front of them, and they again saw the man exposing his genitalia.” The boys jumped on a bus, which

took them to the Maple Ridge bus loop where they saw the same SUV. They were able to notify police and the suspect was arrested. “The suspect is known to police for this type of offence, and has a past criminal conviction. The victims in this case did the right thing in keeping themselves safe. They did not engage in any conversation with him, stayed together, and noted the descriptions of the man and his vehicle,” said Dunlop.

Accessibility recognized A committee gave awards to people and businesses that help make life easier for those with mobility issues. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Two days after receiving an award for his community service, Greg Turnball was still at a loss for words. Turnball received a certificate of appreciation as a “difference-maker” from the Municipal Advisory Committee on Accessibility Issues (MACAI) for serving six years on its board – part of the time as its chair – and starting a support group for people with multiple sclerosis. “I’m still speechless,” Turnball said, tearing up on Friday. “I didn’t expect it.” Turnball received the award at the ninth annual accessibility awards event held Wednesday evening. The awards are given to people involved in non-profits, businesses, and municipal services who help make it easier for people in wheelchairs and scooters and with other mobility issues to access their services. Turnball said both the municipalities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are “very responsive” on accessibility issues, for example, when new parks and facilities are built. “I really think Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have their act together,” he said.

Turnball’s award was presented at the end of the evening, after several business and services were recognized for their accessibility-friendly practices. The award for universal-architectural access went to Hollywood 3 Cinemas in Pitt Meadows for incorporating accessible seating within the premium seating area of the theatre. The accessibility of the lobby and washrooms was also noted when the award was given out. Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows parks department’s Bruce McLeod and his staff were nominated for their ability to design and incorporate the needs of all park users, to ensure that universal design aspects including accessible play structures, paths and walkways, picnic areas, water features, and ground surfaces. Sharon Malone, president of the Emerald Pig Theatrical Society, was nominated for the society’s inclusiveness of persons with disabilities in theatrical productions. “On stage, we are all actors, characters playing a role,” Malone said. “Our disabilities disappear as we create the world on the stage and entertain the audience.” Other awards went to Fitness Edge instructor Debbie Bacso, Jennifer Swan and her staff at Great Clips, and Shoppers Drug Mart in Pitt Meadows. Three people were recognized for their volunteer work with the MS support group, started by Turnball. They were acupuncturist (Justin) Ho Young Lee, massage-therapist Joannie Raddysh, and reflexologist Ursula Hielscher who have been providing free services.

Wednesday, June 20, 2012 6:30-8:00pm Meadows Room, Pitt Meadows City Hall, 12007 Harris Road The first 50 attendees who arrive by walking or biking will receive an exclusive Pitt Meadows reflector, and everyone is entered to win a Pitt Prize Pack! Stanley Cup: One year later

It’s been one year since the Vancouver Canucks lost the Stanley Cup to the Boston Bruins in Game 7 and hooligans filled the streets and inflicted millions of dollars worth of damage to business and public property. In the 12 months since that bruising hit to Vancouver’s reputation, the Integrated Riot Investigation team has recommended 674 criminal charges against 225 suspected rioters. The number of guilty pleas entered so far is 23. Vancouver Police Chief Const. Jim Chu announced they’re still planning to recommend charges against an additional 100 people in the coming months. The chief said that, by the time they are done, more than 300 people will have been charged with more than 900 criminal charges – making this the greatest number of people charged with a crime arising from one incident in Canadian history. Most of the suspects will be charged with participating in a riot, the most serious charge that can be laid, and the charge that may ensure the most accountability from the courts. Only two people, Ryan Dickinson and Emmanuel Alviar, both 20 years old, are serving jail terms after pleading guilty. Alviar was sentenced to one month in jail. Some people believe he deserves a less harsh sentence because he came forward. We don’t agree. A rioter is a rioter. The most public of the alleged rioters from Maple Ridge is Nathan Kotylak, whose admitted antics earned him a two-year suspension from competing on the national water polo team. The then17-year-old went public, acknowledging his wrongdoing, and had a judge lift a ban against publishing his name in the newspaper. However, it is unknown whether Kotylak has been criminally charged. Kotylak now plays water polo for at West Valley Junior College in Saratoga, Calif. Tough break for a rising water polo star to be forced into playing in California – and how’s your tan? - S.M.

Federal budget

Bill C-38 planned for balance

Dear Editor, Whenever I read a letter like John Kelly’s [MP urged to stand up against PM, June 14 Letters, TIMES], I wonder if the writer has actually read Bill C-38. While I disagree with his conclusions, I agree with some of his points, for example, his claim that “the majority of Canadians are not against economic development…” Mr. Kelly adds that Canadians just want those projects to be done right, without unacceptable environmental or social impacts, and that the assessment process should not be unreasonable. It’s also our view that you can have responsible resource development that balances the environment and the economy, supported by an environmental assessment regime that is thorough, as well as timely. While founded upon the best of intentions, the current federal process is overly

complex and inconsistently applied. The result is often unacceptable delays. This also harms the environment, as limited government resources are consumed by unnecessary process steps and the requirement to assess small projects that pose minimal risk to the environment. It’s time to modernize federal environmental assessment by making reviews more timely and predictable, reducing duplication, strengthening protection, and enhancing consultations with aboriginal peoples. Anyone who reads Bill C-38, the Jobs, Growth and Long-Term Prosperity Act, will clearly see these four pillars as part of our comprehensive, balanced plan to ensure a prosperous, sustainable future for Canada. Randy Kamp, Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission MP [Note: A fuller version of this letter is online at www.mrtimes.com.]

Federal politics

Canada sold to big business

Dear Editor, I am concerned about what our prime minister, Stephen Harper, is doing to Canada. I attended the public rally outside MP Randy Kamp’s office on Wednesday to protest the bill that will gut our environment agency and many other areas critical to our country’s well-being. Harper is clearly serving the interests of big business, at the expense of ordinary Canadians. He’s not listening to us and didn’t even consult with his own MPs on the budget. Our democracy has been hijacked by the Bilderberg group of billionaires and their bought-out politicians. Harper was an attendee to these ultra-secret elitist meetings. And he sent his Chief of Staff, Nigel S. Wright, to Chelsea, Va., to attend this year’s session – no doubt to update the ruling elites of our world on what a great job Harper is doing. I want to restore real democracy to Canada, something we used to enjoy and cherish as Canadians. What we have today is corporatocracy, the rule of the super-rich corporations through their bought-and-paid-for politicians. John McKenzie, Maple Ridge

have chosen to work together to provide services we all need. And it works. Mr. Kamp thinks the “Big Government” scare tactic will drive us to his camp of fear, but Canadians are waking up. In place of government, Stephen Harper would like to insert Big Oil. I certainly don’t hate corporations, but they cannot be expected to manage resources and our environment wisely. That’s our job, and we elected Mr. Kamp to represent us. Changes to the Fisheries Act, with a nod to the fishing industry to secure some cheap votes, are aimed at smoothing the path for tarsands bitumen to be refined in other countries. Mr. Kamp asked us to read Harper’s 425 pages of deceit; we asked him to stand up to Harper. He didn’t. James Rowley, Maple Ridge

Energy

Clean sources replace Fukushima

Dear Editor, Amid the lingering fears from last year’s Fukushima nuclear disaster, Japan recently shut down the last of its working reactors. What impact this is going to have on the world’s third largest economy remains to be seen, but serious power shortages in Japan are expected to be the result if Japan decides not to repower those reactors. As last year’s Japanese tsunami disaster painfully demonstrated, Mother Nature is not always the kindest parent. And when it comes to the distribution of energy resources, Mother Nature is decidedly unfair. Unlike B.C., where renewable and other energy resources are plentiful, Japan has very few energy resources, let alone clean or even renewable ones. Given the serious lack of an ingredient essential to a modern technological soci-

ety, namely energy, one can easily imagine the kind of hardship power shortages are likely to cause for the people of Japan. Moreover, as the global economy wobbles its way back to some semblance of recovery, meeting Japan’s energy needs is going to be increasingly challenging for Japanese people without the 30 per cent of their power they were getting from nuclear energy. That’s why I’m encouraged by the steps being taken to include Japan in

B.C.’s liquid natural gas energy export plans. Liquid natural gas is a source of clean energy that B.C. is in a prime position to supply to Japan. B.C.’s geographic separation from Japan is not really that great, as the tsunami debris washing up on our shore reminds us. If we can do something concrete to help ease one of the ongoing hardships the Japanese people face as a result of the tsunami, then I’m all for it. Sandra Robinson, Maple Ridge

Park features Finnish history

Webster’s Corners Park officially opens on Saturday with ceremonies and a rededication of the Sampo stone. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

A new park and the rededication of a stone commemorating the history of Finnish pioneers will be part of Webster’s Corners Day this Saturday. Webster’s Corners Park has been built beside the elementary school of the same name at Dewdney Trunk Road and 256th Street. It is a neighbourhood park featuring new play equipment, benches, and fitness equipment. Part of this weekend’s opening ceremonies will be the rededication of the Sampo Stone, which has been relocated to the new park from the old Finnish hall next door. Having the stone at the park will introduce area newcomers to the history and culture of the area, said Lynda Soderholm, who traded her Irish name Kelly when she got married to the son of Finnish immigrants. “This used to be called Little Finland,” Lynda said about Webster’s Corners. Her husband Mel Soderholm grew up in the rural Maple Ridge neighbourhood, in a house built by his father Uuno Soderholm. He and Lynda – who hails originally from Haney – still live in the Soderholm family home where they brought up their three kids. The house, expanded from its original 900 square feet, still includes a traditional wood-burning sauna. The Finnish community’s activities centred around the services at 256th and Dewdney, which included a post office, and three stores including the Red & White Co-op. In the early history of Webster’s Corners, there were a lot of immigrants from Finland who only spoke Finnish, Mel said. Raymond Savola, also the son of
