More than 50 people came out to rally at Memorial Peace Park on Mother’s Day to remind government that families with developmentally disabled people need more support.

CLBC Stop the Cuts! was part of a province-wide rally to call for action after government promised earlier this year to address concerns regarding people with developmental disabilities.

Minister of Social Development Stephanie Cadieux said she is committed to renewing the contract between Community Living BC (CLBC) and Ridge Meadows Recycling Society (RMRS).

“CLBC has contracts that are renewed annually and it is the CLBC’s intent to renew the contract with RMRS,” said Cadieux. “Jobs at the facility for individuals with developmental disabilities will continue for as long as the individuals want them. I am committed to that,” she added.

A 36-year-old Maple Ridge man died from stab wounds he suffered in an altercation near 223rd Street and McIntosh Avenue in Maple Ridge early Sunday morning.

Pitt Meadows Elementary student Aodhan Carlisle will help carry the Rick Hansen medal to Spirit Square in her hometown, part a larger celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Man in Motion tour.

Carlisle, who has a medical condition that affects her muscles, has spent a lot of time in a wheelchair, and admires Rick Hansen for his courage in the face of his adversity. “[Rick Hansen] shows if you put your mind to something, you can make a difference,” Aodhan said.

Aodhan is a leadership student at her elementary school, and helps out with events like the Christmas hamper and Halloween for Hunger.

She was chosen by the school administration to take part in the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay.

“He’s a huge inspiration,” said Sydney Carter, who will be supporting her friend Aodhan on the run, about Hansen. “He just wanted to change something... and he just went and did it.”

Being a part of the Rick Hansen celebrations is “amazing,” Sydney added, Aodhan said when she was younger she felt “bad for myself” because she had to be in a wheelchair a lot of the time – her time in a wheelchair has been drastically reduced in the past few years.

But through her challenges, Aodhan said she has learned that when she sets her mind to do something, she was able to do things she thought before she couldn’t.

For example, Aodhan participated in a “water walk” to raise money and awareness about people in other countries who don’t have easy access to water.

On Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. there will be a celebration of the 25th anniversary in Maple Ridge with Maple Ridge students Nathan Bragg bringing in the medal.

Then on Thursday, the medal will travel from Maple Ridge to Pitt Meadows and be part of a celebration at Spirit Square in Pitt Meadows from 11:45 am to 1:15 p.m.

Live music, a barbecue and other events will serve as a backdrop for the medal ceremony, also featuring medal-bearer and Pitt Meadows resident Gordon Kirkland, a successful humour writer and novelist and advocate for accessibility for persons with disabilities.

They came back from their first meeting with lots of great ideas and consistently demonstrated outstanding leadership skills as they coordinated the school’s involvement in the Rick Hansen event, Jakse said.

Pitt-bound plane crashes, kills three

Three people who took off from a Pitt Meadows airport on Sunday crashed in the Okanagan near Peachland.

Horrified motorists on the Okanagan Connector highway phoned 911 after they saw the single-engine de Havilland Beaver crash into the trees about 30 metres from the side of the highway near Brenda Mine at around 6:45 p.m.

“When I came around the corner and saw the plane in the air, I thought, ‘Whoa! That’s low, by the tree line,’ and then it just disappeared,” said eyewitness Chris Koebel.

Penticton resident Koebel, a 33-year-old safety officer with a Burnaby-based mining company, was returning home from teaching a first aid course in Kamloops when he saw the plane through his front windshield.

He thought the plane, obscured by the setting sun, might have pulled up, but as he turned a corner, smoke appeared in his rearview mirror.

A small float plane carrying three people on a round-trip flight from Pitt Meadows to Kelowna crashed and was engulfed in flames Sunday evening, just off of Highway 97C in the Okanagan.

The plane, a privately owned aircraft, left Pitt Meadows earlier in the day with five people on board, but began its return flight with three.

West Kelowna RCMP Sgt. Dino Zol reported that none of the three survived. Identities will not be released until next of kin are notified.

He pulled over, called 911, and then raced forward, looking for a break in the highway median so he could make a U-turn and get to any potential crash site. By the time he reached the crash site, about six people had already gathered on the highway, looking down the hillside to the burning plane.

“Everything was on fire – the trees were on fire – all that we could make out was the tail end of the plane,” Koebel said. Several people said they heard a couple of explosions from the wreckage just minutes before he got there, Koebel said.

Along with two other men, he scaled an eight-foot fence and began searching for survivors. The three covered a 150-metre-wide area around the crash site, but couldn’t find anyone before police, paramedics, and fire crews arrived.

“That’s something you never wish anyone to see or experience,” Koebel said.

French immersion-only school pondered by district

Creating a French immersion-only school might be an option for the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district as senior

staff grapple with challenges with the successful program.

The school district offers French immersion at several schools, but the English programs tend to shrink at those schools.

District superintendent Jan Unwin said at last week’s board of education meeting it might be time to have a conversation questioning “is it wise to have a French immersion school,” something that

has been done around the province.

French immersion is a popular program but it brings challenges with it, said Pitt Meadows Elementary principal Joanne Rowen, who’s also

in charge of the district’s immersion programs. First, it’s growing too fast, staffing is a constant problem, and attrition usually happens in Grade 11 and 12 when the program is the most demanding.

“The coursework to get the two dogwoods [is] not easy,” Rowen told the board of education.

Students who complete immersion up to Grade 12 receive both an English and French dogwood.

RUSKIN DAM AND POWERHOUSE UPGRADE PROJECT ROAD AND RECREATION CLOSURES The British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) has given BC Hydro the green light to proceed with upgrades to the Ruskin Powerhouse and Dam that will improve the seismic safety and reliability of the 82-year-old facility. The decision means BC Hydro may now begin construction on this important project.

To ensure the safety of the public and workers, several facilities will be closed until the project is completed in 2018. b Hayward Street over Ruskin Dam will continue to be closed to all motor vehicles, bicycles and pedestrian traffic.

A British version of Peter Pan complete with flying actors will hit the stage at The ACT this week, put on by a group of home-schooled thespians.

Xtreme Theatre, a performing arts group for students who are being home-schooled, has been putting on musical productions for 13 years.

The full-scale production involve kids of all ages, their parents, alumni, and industry experts.

This year 92 students are involved in the Peter Pan production with two different casts acting in main roles, with homeschooled students from around the Lower Mainland – from Vancouver, North Vancouver, Mission, and Coquitlam – taking part.

“Anything worth doing you do the best you can because it brings glory to God,” Holm said.

The theatre group also keeps the plays family friendly and “modest” – no bad language or kissing, she said.

Every year Xtreme Theatre’s productions get better, Holm said, and they have become a “well-oiled machine.”

The students can get a variety of high-school credits for participating in Xtreme Theatre’s productions, including drama, vocals, choreography, and P.E. The Peter Pan version that Xtreme Theatre is putting on is

the British version, and it includes music and songs that many people might not recognize, Holm said.

Specialists are coming from Las Vegas to add an extra element to the play – some of the actors will actually fly in the production, requiring 13 hours of rehearsal time.

The theatre group was able to rent five different backdrops from another theatre.

There will be six shows of Peter Pan at The ACT. The two school shows are sold out.

There will be four shows: May 17 at 7 p.m., May 18 at 7 p.m., and May 18 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children.

Joke ending It’s no joke, although the timing may suggest otherwise. The BC Liberal government has finally got around to making good on its promise to get rid of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).

B.C. Finance Minister Kevin Falcon is tabling legislation to end the HST and return to the Provincial Sales Tax (PST).

The change takes effect on April 1 next year – that’s April Fool’s Day, which is kind of fitting in many ways.

The timing will help to remind us of how then-Finance Minister Colin Hansen and Premier Gordon Campbell attempted to make fools of us all by deciding to implement the HST only hours after polls closed on a provincial election during which the new tax had been explicitly left off the table.

But in the true tradition of April Fool’s Day – when a practical joke doesn’t work, the joker becomes the fool – the BC Liberals’ HST fiasco put paid to Campbell’s premiership and seriously damaged any ambition of political advancement for Hansen.

B.C. voters were not fooled – and they certainly were not amused.

The anti-HST movement grew under the leadership (ironically!) of former B.C. fool… er… premier Bill Vander Zalm, and succeeded despite Campbell’s sacrifice of his premiership and a complete change in BC Liberal leadership.

The BC Liberals still have not recovered from the blow that the antiHST crowd delivered. At least in part, that is due to the time it has taken – and continues to take – to accede to the results of a historic democratic exercise in this province.

It supposedly took only days to implement the brand new HST, but somehow, it has been impossible to eliminate it as quickly.

But when you wake up on April Fool’s Day next year, the joke will finally have ended.

Cow attack

Pit bulls’ reputation abused

Dear Editor, I resent the comment, “pit bulls were bred to maim and kill,” in your story about the cows that were attacked by dogs [Attacked cows charge traffic, May 10, TIMES].

The true history on pit bulls is different.

They are used for human rescue, drug dogs, police dogs, therapy dogs, and especially children’s therapy dogs. They are sweet, loving, and even tempered.

Not only am I an advocate for the breed, but I own a pit cross that I rescued from death row in Los Angeles. My previous dog was 100 per cent “staffie” that lived 15 years with many friends who adored her.

If it had been another breed in the attack, I doubt it would have made the news at all.

When there is a situation involving a pit bull, the story is bled dry.

Dog ownership should not be allowed for those who do not have the proper, safe environment for them. Anyone can buy dog (any breed) and take it home.

If you saw the abuse that is done to this breed, you would be horrified. They are trained to fight other dogs, and those who cannot handle it are used as bait dogs for the ones that learn to fight. Bait dogs have their mouths tied or duct-taped, and their teeth are sometimes filed down so they cannot defend themselves.

It is not uncommon for dogs of any breed to chase cows, horses, cats, squirrels, etc. It is what they do. But as soon as it is a pit/ staffie, all hell breaks loose.

I could go on, as there is so much share on this wonderful breed, but I would like to say that comments like those in your story make it very hard for people like me to fight to save these poor dogs against undeserved discrimination.

These are great dogs, deserving of compassion.

Dear Editor, It’s been said that Adrian Dix is likely the next premier of B.C. Much, but not all of Dix’s career has been in politics and government.

After studying history and political science at UBC, he lived in France, worked for an MP in Ottawa, and returned to B.C. as an aide

to Finance Minister and later Premier Glen Clark.

From 2000 to 2005, he worked as executive director of Canadian Parents for French – B.C. & Yukon Branch, a non-profit society promoting French language education. During his tenure, the organization saw its membership grow from about 100 people to 7,000.

Dear Editor, It is perfectly relevant for Sandra Robinson to question Adrian Dix’s character. It’s not a personal attack nor character assassination to question a public, political figure regarding true events.

Voters want the whole picture, and candidates’ honesty, integrity, and past history are all included.

Because of a question of lack of integrity, Gordon Campbell, Bill Vander Zalm, and Glen Clark would probably not be electable again, so why do Adrian Dix and Moe Sihota still hold high positions of power in the NDP? Elizabeth Rosenau has a lovely naivete regarding politics, of which she will become disabused. Others know exactly what’s transpiring, and choose to gloss over it.

BC Liberal supporters have always intensely disliked Dix, because he has been an effective critic of their administration.

His ability to expose maladministration was instrumental in establishing B.C.’s Representative for Children and Youth. He also helped expose a crisis in seniors’ care, resulting in investigation by B.C.’s ombudsperson. The government’s apologists and handmaidens, many of them professional or contract PR types, have not forgiven Dix for forcing needed changes.

With Dix as premier, B.C.’s government would be headed by someone whose intellectual and personal stature are equal to Allison Redford’s, a pleasant change from the current lopsided imbalance.

Kids, parents need summer break

Dear Editor, When I was a kid, I was a dedicated student. Come summer, however, my mind was as far away from school as possible.

Had my school been on a calendar that included the summer [Time to move to a full year, May 3 Opinion, TIMES], I would have been physically in the school, but my mind and motivation would not.

Year-round schooling may work in southern California where you can have a summer day any time of year, but the reality is we live in a mostly cold wet place.

Summer is the one time of year where we can fairly reliably predict the weather. It is the one time to have our place in the sun.

Not every family can afford a sunny holiday in the winter, or an expensive ski vacation.

Imagine trying to go on a family camping trip in miserable March. Imagine trying to reserve a camping spot if everyone only had the same two weeks to do it.

Imagine kids trying to learn in sweltering hot classrooms with no air conditioning – and the expense of adding air conditioning.

For most working parents trying to juggle things it is easier to arrange for a long break

than a bunch of small ones. There are lots of programs set up for the summer, university kids looking for work, etc.

Some schools have had success with an all-year calendar. I have no trouble with traffic riding my bike to work – because almost no one else is doing it. If every school were all year, there would be no niche opportunities, like being able to book holidays when no one else is.

Kids really need to get outside more.

They’ll kick and scream as you wrestle them away from their video games, but once you get them outside, they make their own fun, even today. Kids have fun with nothing more than rocks and sticks, fashioning toys out of whatever is around them.

As for continuation of learning, the kids catch up fast enough. Summer is the time to learn all the other things that aren’t taught in school. It is the big break at the right time of year that enables kids to have renewed motivation to be in school.

While the speakers cranked out upbeat tunes and the sun beat down, 194 people took off for the 15th annuals Vistas Run on Sunday.

Olivia Etey crossed the finish line right into the arms of her proud mother, Suzanna.

The 17-year-old Grade 12 student at Westview Secondary was the first female who was running in the Vistas Run 10-kilometre route to cross the finish line.

This was only her third time participating in a run of this type.

“I love running, I realized the passion I had for it when I ran the Sun Run last month,” Olivia said between gasps for air.

Desiree Betz was the first female to blaze past the finish line after running the five-kilometre route.

“It’s my daughter Cassandra’s 12th birthday today and she is doing her first run ever as a Mother’s Day present,” said Betz.

“My husband James and threeyear-old Savannah did the four-kilometre but had to abort early for a pee break,” she said with a laugh.

This year, to celebrate Mother’s Day, a new route was added. The four-kilometre Family Fun Walk took participants past farm animals and local scenery. Strollers and leashed pets were welcomed on this route to encourage family fitness.

The timed portion of the Vistas Run included a five-and 10-kilometre

route through Kanaka Creek Park.

The event draws Lower Mainland walkers and runners who participate year after year in support of Ridge Meadows Hospice Society.

“All the proceeds we make go directly towards our palliative and bereavement programs, which are free of charge and volunteer driven,” said run organizer Kristina Murray.

Don’t judge a shelter animal on its surroundings The Maple Ridge SPCA is hosting a Pup-a-razzi Day on Wednesday, May 16.

ver make judgments about people based on their appearance or surroundings? Sadly, many do jump to conclusions based on superficial or limited information; and that is a fate faced by many shelter animals who have to make their first impression on potential adopters from inside a kennel or cage.

Too often people devalue shelter animals or view them as somehow damaged or second class, when in reality, shelter animals are in SPCA care through no fault of their own.

They are there because their guardians couldn’t – or wouldn’t – look after them. Yet, only a tiny percentage of all animals acquired by B.C. families come from the SPCA or other rescue groups.

May is Adoption Awareness Month and the BC SPCA is hoping that anyone thinking about bringing a new pet

into their family will take the time to visit the animal shelter to get to know the wonderful animals currently looking for their “forever home.”

Working with these animals every day we see their unique personalities, their love of life, their mischievous and funny antics, and the immense amount of love they have for the humans in their lives. These delightful animals – whether they be dogs and puppies, cats or kittens, rabbits or small animals – have so much to offer their potential new guardian.

One of the projects taking place during Adoption Awareness Month is Pup-a-razzi Day. On May 16, at the Maple Ridge shelter and others around the province, professional photographers will be donating their time to take studioquality photographs of shelter animals to showcase their beauty – inside and out. The SPCA hopes that if potential adopters can visualize animals outside their temporary shelter home, it will increase the chances of adoption.

Pitt Meadows mother encourages therapy in the garden

A master gardener has published a book to help special needs kids in the garden.

ardening can help with sensory and attention issues, anger management, and hyperactivity.

With several years of horticultural therapy under her belt, Natasha Etherington has put her experiences into a book that is aimed at helping others develop a therapeutic garden situation.

Gardening for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Special Education Needs was written by Etherington and published this year by Jessica Kingsley Publishers in London, England.

The courtyard in the middle of Pitt Meadows Elementary has been transformed into an accessible and therapeutic garden with several grants: from the Rick Hansen Foundation, Toyota Evergreen fund, Vancity, and recently a $2,000 green grant from TD Bank. The parent advisory council has also given money for benches.

The garden includes a snoozle lawn – a 10-by-14-foot lawn that kids can just crawl and roll around on. There is also an A-frame enabling garden with a raised bed.

“The book is how you can engage a child... with very little gardening knowledge,” Etherington said.

The garden is available to teachers and special education assistants at the elementary school. If things aren’t going well in the classroom, an SEA can take a student into the garden for a break – for example, a sensory break.

Getting hot and sweaty working in a garden can be good for children with anger

problems, because they associate that hot and sweaty feeling with a pleasant experience – gardening – and not with anger, Etherington said.

The lights and noise of a classroom can also be disturbing to some students with sensory issues, Etherington said, and being in a natural environment like the therapeutic garden gives them a sanctuary.

But it’s not just a garden for children with special needs, and children who garden there as a group are building friendships.

Etherington said she hopes that the outcome of gardening with children is that “the desire for gardening comes from within them.”

In the introduction to the book, Etherington writes that the goal of horticultural therapy is “the reduction of negative arousal levels,” which leads to better health, and that plants, gardens, and natural landscapes are used to improve “cognitive, physical, social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing by parents, support staff or trained therapists.”

Etherington applies the Buddhist principle of “mindfulness” – being present in the moment – to horticultural therapy.

In the school’s garden is a digging plot, where children can just muck about and become familiar with the soil and “form a long-lasting relationship with the earth.”

That will create the interest for children to start planting and learning more, Etherington writes.

The book outlines various activities to do with children in the garden, from digging, working with tools, and planting to cooking produce from the garden.

The book also includes specific exercises for children who have autism spectrum disorder, attention problems, and for children who are in wheelchairs.

Rally raises funds for Asante Centre A world-renowned centre in Maple Ridge is selling tickets to a May 26 event.

A

fundraiser for a world renowned health centre located in Maple Ridge will involve a car rally through Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge – although organizers say it’s not a race but a day of activities.

Participants in the fundraiser will have to drive throughout Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows on Saturday, May 26, interpreting cryptic clues to take

them through 11 stations.

“It’s going to be a blast,” said Mary Morellato, one of the organizers.

Cash prizes are $100 for first place, $80 for second, and $40 for third.

In addition to the cryptic clues, there will be an additional challenge involving a raw egg and a knitted egg holder, Morellato said, which will be worth “big points” at the end of the event.

Morellato worked in the school district for 24 years as a special education assistant, and a lot of her work was with children who had fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).

Morellato currently volunteers with the Asante Centre, a world-renowned centre in Maple Ridge that deals with people who have FASD.

“You have to give to the community and this is my way of doing it,” Morellato said.

The event, which starts and finishes at Golden Ears Pub, takes place from noon to 6 p.m. the pub will be offering a burger and beverage for $15 at the event.

The rally begins at 1 p.m. and Morellato said she expects it to wrap up at around 4 p.m.

Maple Ridge native Guiseppe du Toit and his teammates from Shawnigan Lake School recently pulled off one of the biggest wins in the history of the prestigious Sanix World Rugby Youth Invitational Tournament in Japan.

The Canadian contingent surprised many by beating top-seeded Kelston Boys High School from New Zealand.

The three-time B.C. provincial championship squad from Shawnigan Lake travelled to the Sanix Tournament for the first time, knowing that it would be up against some of the best young teams on the planet.

“Going into the tournament we wanted to compete and measure ourselves against some of the best teams in the world,” du Toit said.

“Our expectations were that it would be high-quality rugby, and that we would have to raise our own level of play to compete with the other teams.”

The Sanix tournament is held annually in the Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan. Participation is by invitation only, and the overseas schools selected by their respective unions to represent their country are generally expected to be of a high standard and among the top five in each country.

It is a unique competition in world rugby for high schools, and is often referred to as a “mini World Cup.” Since no Canadian team to date has managed more than one win at the tournament, Shawnigan was not considered one of the favourites going into their draw.

However, the Canadians did something that no other team at the tournament managed to do when they pulled off a win against Kelston, widely regarded as the best high school team on the planet and Kelston Boys eventually went on to win the 2012 Sanix

For du Toit it was the crowning moment. “Personally, this was one of the highlights on the tour for me because my kicking had peaked just at the right time and I kicked 12 points, as well as a drop kick from the 40-metre line,” he said. “Afterwards we were all ecstatic. It was one of them most

intense and stressful games we as a team have ever played.”

All in all, the Shawnigan team set a new Canadian record at the tournament by recording four wins in six games and finishing 10th overall, the highest place finish for a Canadian team ever.

Du Toit picked up his first rugby ball at age of four in his native country of South Africa. In 2000, he immigrated to Canada and continued playing rugby under Malcolm Knox, the coach of the Maple Ridge Bruins.

He has since taken on Canadian citizenship and recently had the opportunity to represented his adopted country for the first time on the U17 team that went to the 2012 International Rugby Festival at Wellington College in the UK in April.

Previous Canadian schools that have competed in the Sanix Tournament are limited to Carson Graham in 2007 (15th place, 16 teams) and 2009 (19th place, 20 teams), as well as Sinclair Secondary School in Ontario in 2008 (16th place, 16 teams).
