Described as “a gentle pitbull guarding the social conscience of our community,” long-time volunteer and former councillor, Candace Gordon was chosen as Maple Ridge’s Citizen of the Year Thursday night.

The Maple Ridge Community Foundation held its annual fundraiser and celebration of the person in the community who the foundation felt should be recognized for her positive contribution to the District of Maple Ridge.

The list of organizations that have benefited from Gordon’s volunteerism was extensive, as outlined by the selection committee chair Debbie MacRae.

Lightning bolt jolts Osprey Village home No one was injured when a lightning blasted into an upstairs bedroom on Thursday.

The Radom family of Pitt Meadows was lucky to walk away unscathed after their home was struck by lightning Thursday.

Darren Radom was in the upstairs master bedroom of his Barnston View Road townhouse with his wife Janie and 10-monthold daughter Aysia when the lightning crashed through his roof, leaving three holes, including one

that is three feet across.

“It felt like an explosion and then the drywall fell on top of us. There was a loud bang and a bright light – I’m surprised we are not deaf and blind now,” explained Radom, who was lying on the bed five feet away from the chair his wife and baby were in.

“I thought they were vapourized before my eyes because the drywall fell and I couldn’t see them,” he elaborated. His three-year-old son Jaymine was in the other bedroom.

Radom said he looked up into the ceiling and could see the insulation in the attic on fire and the family evacuated the townhouse immediately.

“The fire was extinguished by sprinklers in the home,” said Pitt Meadows fire chief Don Jolley.

“It’s unbelievable that they were not hurt by the lightning, or when the ceiling fell on them, or from the fire and smoke,” Jolley said.

The famly is now staying with Radom’s mother in Pitt Meadows.

“The main thing is we are all healthy and safe,” he said. “The townhouse and everything in it is replaceable. It’s a bit of a hassle though – we will be out of our townhouse for two to three months.”

The fire department broke the doors down to both neighbouring units to make sure nobody was home and that the flames hadn’t

spread further.

“If that sprinkler hadn’t activated, a lot of families could have been left homeless,” said Jolley, adding that Pitt Meadows was one of the first municipalities to introduce a bylaw requiring sprinklers.

“We are very lucky to have a sprinkler bylaw in our community. Many communities aren’t so lucky and the province no longer allows [sprinkler bylaws],” Jolley added.

“Sprinklers save lives and property. Fire associations all over the world realize the value of the sprinkler system. B.C. is just slow at adopting these internationally recommended standards.”

Cranes inspire tale anchored in magic

A book launch on Sunday has turned into a festival celebrating local arts. mrtimes.com

Cell tower proposed A cell phone tower has been proposed on a private property in Whonnock, to be built by Alcatel-Lucent. Industry Canada regulates cellular antenna structures, but applicants are required to consult with the local government on the issue. The applicant wants to improve cellphone coverage between 272nd and 286th streets and from Lougheed Highway to Dewdney Trunk Road. The tower is proposed for 27679 110th Ave. A District of Maple Ridge staff report prepared for council’s Monday morning meeting notes that “a number of respondents have expressed concerns about this facility.” Council has been asked to give comments on the proposed tower.

Year ends in surplus The District of Maple Ridge ended 2011 with a surplus of about $500,000, which will go into the general revenue accumulated surplus bringing that total to $5.75 million.

The District increased its net financial position to $22.3 million, largely due to pay-down of debt and a reduction in deferred revenues. The financial statements were presented to mayor and council at Monday afternoon’s committee of the whole.

Embroidery, sisterhood, and cranes are intertwined into a magical tale written by local author Annette LeBox, to be launched this Sunday in Maple Ridge.

With their 15 different dance movements and wide variety of calls, cranes have fascinated people locally and around the world, and served as the starting point for LeBox’s latest novel Circle of Cranes.

“Cranes have always been the muse and inspiration for poets and artists,” LeBox said.

Circle of Cranes is a novel for youth written in magic realism, which LeBox calls the “hardest genre to write.”

The novel tells the story of Suyin, a 13-year-old girl who has been sent from China to New York City to work in a sweatshop.

Suyin belongs to the Crane Sisterhood, and that provides her some escape and hope from her slave-labour job.

Writing the Circle of Cranes was a journey for LeBox, both literal and figurative.

It included a journey to the poorest area of China, Guizhou province, to research the village where her protagonist originated.

LeBox went to China in 2000, and travelled through the countryside in a minivan full of people and animals, a trip she described at “terrifying, absolutely terrifying.”

The area was truly off the beaten track in a remote and poverty-stricken area.

LeBox recalled seeing children as young as six and seven caring their younger siblings on their backs as their parents were working in the fields during the day.

Her destination was Coa Hai, an impoverished village where a flock of black-necked cranes spend the winter. It’s also the

home of the Miao people who are reknown for their embroidery, stitching the history of their people into garments.

LeBox’s research also included a journey to one of the richest cities in the world, New York, where she managed to talk her way into two garment sweatshops and take pictures.

In New York, LeBox was guided by a local expert in illegal migration.

He showed her a building where two sweatshops were located.

LeBox took a chance and walked up to the door of each sweatshop by herself – thinking as a woman she’d be less threatening – and managed to get inside and quickly take some pictures before anyone realized what she was doing.

She wanted to see what a sweatshop actually looked like to make sure her book was as authentic as possible. “[The novel] is all based on true life research,” LeBox said.

LeBox was a teacher for 25 years in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district and then worked as a faculty association at SFU for a few years.

There she started writing articles and discovered that she really enjoyed writing.

LeBox has written about 50 poems, which have been published in literary magazines, but she has never put them together in a book form.

She said she has one more novel to write and then she plans to get back to her poetry writing.

Circle of Cranes will be launched on Sunday, April 22, which is Earth Day, at St. Andrew’s United Church, 22165 Dewdney Trunk Rd. LeBox will read from her new youth novel at the event, which will be accompanied by the Maple Ridge Dance Circle and original music by Roy Hakkinen.

The book launch will be accompanied by other activities, including music by the Bergthorson Academy Glee Club, which has composed a piece called Fly Away for the event, and music by folksinger Pam Carr and Iris Del Castillo, the people’s choice winner of the

At Sunday’s book launch, one writer out of the dozens who submitted stories to The TIMES, will be chosen as the winner.

The newly formed Ridge Meadows Orchestra will present a debut performance of Volo di Gru (Flight of Cranes), composed by local musician Don Maddocks.

The Emerald Pig Theatrical Society will perform a short piece called The Crane as Muse.

Experts advise keeping distance from bears Black bears are waking from hibernation and are now foraging in local parks.

As Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows continue to grow, so too does the chance of having an encounter with a black bear.

That is why Roy Teo, a Metro Vancouver parks interpreter, set up Bear Essentials information tables in Kanaka Creek Regional Park on Saturday.

“The reason why we are doing this [information session] here is because it’s spring and the bears are coming out of hibernation and will be in the parks. We want people to be bear aware,” Teo said.

Black bears typically emerge from hibernation between March and May after a three- to fivemonth slumber.

Hibernation is an important survival strategy for bears in this region because their main foods – green vegetation, berries, salmon, and insects – are not typically available in winter.

With only about six months to build up fat reserves for hibernation, black bears must eat a great deal of food, Teo explained.

They are particularly attracted to foods that are abundant, high in protein and energy, and that

Teo said the key message to remember as bears and people attempt to share space is to “be alert, not only for bears, but for all wildlife.”

When in a park, look ahead, watch for signs of recent bear activity, make a lot of noise, avoid wearing earphones, and keep dogs on leashes, Teo explained.

“The natural instinct for a black bear is to hide or move away from a potential threat, including from people. If a bear hears you, it will avoid you,” the

interpreter elaborated.

If people do happen upon a bear, Teo said remember the four “S”s: stay calm, stand still, speak calmly, and slowly walk backwards.

Meanwhile, the provincial government is providing $225,000 during the next 12 months to bring the Bear Aware program to more communities around the province.

Bear Aware – like Bear Essentials – is an education program focused on reducing human-bear conflict.

criterion that must be met for a community to obtain “Bear Smart” status.

“Bear Smart” is a voluntary, preventative conservation measure that encourages communities, businesses, and individuals to work together to address the root causes of human-bear conflicts, and to reduce the risks to public safety and private property, as well as the number of bears that have to be destroyed each year.

Four communities are currently designated “Bear Smart:” Kamloops, Squamish, Lions Bay, and Whistler. More than 20 other communities in B.C. are actively pursuing “Bear Smart” status.

Conservation officers receive about 37,500 calls regarding human-wildlife conflict each year. Of those calls, approximately 23,800 involved human-bear conflicts. During the past five years in B.C., an average of 600 black bears were destroyed each year, while 93 were relocated.

Recent amendments to the Wildlife Act give conservation officers the ability to issue tickets or court appearance notices to deal with people who repeatedly and negligently fail to secure attractants. These tickets complement existing tools and are expected to reduce the number of incidents.

Duplex gutted by fire

A Maple Ridge family who was displaced by fire had no rental insurance.

Mike Nielson is grateful that his family and neighbours are safe after fire destroyed the back half of his 221st Street rental home Wednesday morning.

“We were in the backyard with the dogs just 30 minutes before any of this happened. I can’t figure it out. I don’t know what happened,” Nielson said.

Nielson explained that he and his two-year-old son Loki were in the bathtub when he thought he smelled smoke.

“It alarmed me, so I threw on my shorts and went downstairs to see, and that is when I realized people were pounding on the doors yelling ‘fire’,” he said.

“I came out to the back deck and saw the gentleman who was trying to alert us,” Nielson recalled. “I grabbed the hose, but as I turned on the water I knew it wouldn’t help, so I ran back in and

grabbed my daughter and son.”

Nielson was renting the south side of the three-storey duplex and lived there with his wife Joan, son Loki, stepdaughter Tegan Campbell, and stepson Matthew Campbell.

Father and son Kaleb and Andrew Devlin lived on the lower level. Andrew is Joan’s brother.

The extended family moved into their side of the duplex at Christmas and did not have rental insurance.

They are trying to figure out a plan. They stayed at the Quality Inn until Saturday.

“Our short-term plan is to stay at my wife’s mom’s, but we can’t stay there too long, because we’d be tripled-stacked,” Nielson explained.

But in the meantime, Nielson is relieved they were able to salvage their photos and momentos from the living room as the fire didn’t reach the front of the house.

“We got out all right, and that’s all that really matters,” he said.

Late-night store workers across B.C. worry amendments to Grant’s Law put them at serious risk.

Grant’s Law came about after the 2005 death of Maple Ridge gas-station attendant Grant De Patie.

De Patie, 24, was dragged to his death when he attempted to stop Darnell Pratt from a gas and das.

The gas station attendant was dragged more than seven kilometres under a stolen car while trying to stop Pratt from stealing $12 of gas.

Pratt was convicted of manslaughter in 2006, and given a six-year sentence for his role in the death of De Patie.

Grant’s Law required employers to have more than one employee working between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. or the facility had to have safety barricades between the employee and customers.

“I think there is going to be dire consequences because of these changes,” said Doug De Patie who fought for the workplace changes after his son’s tragic death. “It is putting workers at risk. It leaves the workers like sitting ducks.”

Selfless acts recognized

“Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer.” – author unknown April 15-21 is National Volunteer Week in Canada.

This marks the 70th year of the establishment of NVW, when the efforts of the 13.3 million volunteers who make this country a better place are recognized nationally.

According to Volunteer Canada statistics, those 13.3 million Canadians who so selflessly give up their free time – for free – have contributed more than 2.1 billion hours towards helping charitable and not-for-profit organizations.

The volunteer movement is gaining momentum. A recent Canada Survey of Giving, Volunteering, and Participating confirms an increase of nearly one million volunteers nationally since 2007, and younger Canadians are delivering the highest volunteer rate.

The survey shows that those in the 15-24 age group have consistently participated in volunteering, more than any other age group for more than a decade.

These are uplifting numbers, especially if you consider how, for many in this challenging economy, time truly is money. But these millions upon millions of volunteers prove that money isn’t everything.

There are plenty of ways in which you can make a difference in the community, including through the food bank, Big Brothers Big Sisters, animal shelters, the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society, Special Olympics, seniors centres, health organizations, the hospital, community policing, therapeutic riding groups, service clubs, literacy groups, municipal committees, and by coaching youth sports teams or helping out at community events such as the annual Terry Fox Run, just to name a few.

With all these opportunities to choose from, you have many ways to join the volunteer movement.

And to make a difference.

Whonnock gets cell surprise Dear Editor,

Surprise, Whonnock residents! You, too, can now join those who have been jolted by the idea that a telecom giant is planning a cell tower for your neighbourhood.

In a rural residential area, an individual land owner can plan with the big corporations to change your community.

Our council has never worked to develop its own policy regarding what telecoms have to do to consult with the community. It just defaults to Industry Canada’s low standards.

As the land-use authority, our council could develop such a policy. Other municipalities have succeeded to restrict towers to land where people do not live, work, or go to school.

This is not a place of “little-while”

residents. Many have lived here for more than 40 years, and those who have joined us more recently are here for the long haul.

If the municipality adopted its own policy, it could protect neighbourhoods like ours from being torn apart by anxiety and feelings of powerlessness.

But even without a policy, it can take a stand and not give its approval to this project.

Is there any advantage to the municipality to not take a stand? What kind of tax/fee incentives are there? I understand that the land owner will do well financially, but what other monies are involved?

This cell tower is not needed immediately. Time should be taken to consider the options.

Prehistoric views promote bullying Dear Editor,

Pink Shirt Day has come and gone, but hopefully, is always in the hearts and minds of everyone.

As a parent whose child successfully navigated the public school system and is now making his way through the greater seas of university, I can attest to all of the heartbreaking challenges that come with the territory.

My son was a victim of bullying for many years in elementary school in Pitt Meadows, and then for a shorter duration in the middle school I moved him

to in Port Coquitlam.

If I could say anything to everyone out there, it would be that the first step is not supporting bullying at home.

My most horrifying moment as a parent was sitting as a member of PAC at my son’s elementary school, and during a very focused discussion on bullying problems within our school, there were two or three mothers in attendance who felt that, basically, it was good for kids. It was reality, life was unkind, and they felt kids just needed to be tough-

Privacy, safety big questions Dear Editor,

Thousands of B.C. citizens like my husband and I are concerned about the safety of smart meters.

BC Hydro’s public relations department states that people may be exposed to a brief blast of radio frequency (RF) waves from their own smart meter, and that this brief exposure has not been proven to cause any detrimental health effects.

On the flip side, and more importantly, where is the evidence that smart meters are safe? That they have no adverse health effects whatsoever? There is none.

If there was any such research, BC Hydro would have made it the headline of their “smart meter” propaganda, and I wouldn’t be writing this letter.

What BC Hydro fails to address is that we all will be exposed to more than our own smart meter’s RF waves.

What about the impact of an entire province worth of smart meters? How will the additional RF pollution impact B.C.’s sensitive ecosystems? How will this additional exposure to radio frequency (RF) waves impact our health, the healthy development and well-being of our children, the health of our citizens’ unborn children?

How many of our neighbourhood’s smart meter bursts will we be exposed to on our commute to work, during walks, on our way to the park with our children, while we toodle about town, or while we sleep?

And there’s the invasion of privacy that goes along with collection of data by smart meters. California has a smart meter opt-out option for its residents, and the citizens of B.C. need such an option, a reasonable option.

Everyone needs to voice their concerns to local, provincial, and federal government officials. Ask them to push BC Hydro into implementing reasonable smart meter optout options for its customers.

Our household is without wireless devices: no WIFI for the computer, no cordless phones. We have cell phones, but limit our calls and use hands-free whenever possible.

What we really thought of those comments was not voiced at that time. We all tried to voice our concerns in ways that would enlighten rather than insult certain parents present.

My fervent hope is that such prehistoric views of parenting are now dying off. It would be the same as saying that beatings, hard labour, and verbal abuse are good, because they make kids “man up” – another phrase that makes a certain spot in my cerebral cortex itch.

Parents need to have dialogues with their kids about how they should be treated, and how they should treat others around them. If there are problems, go to their teachers, the principal, the school board, and yes, if that is getting you nowhere, go to the parents of the children who are making your child or children miserable – something that was actively discouraged when my son was having problems.

Have an adult conversation and let them know how your child is being affected; ask them to talk to their own kids and problem solve.

What did help my son?

Counselling, support, and love at home, a school environment that cared and meant business when dealing with bullying did help my son, and I would sincerely like to say kudos to the martial arts program at Yuen’s in Maple Ridge.

Speak up and be heard.

Let everyone know that bullying will not be tolerated – not at home, school, or work.

Bullying is not an exercise in reality, it is only an exercise in abuse, and that is unacceptable.

Spring… and other meanings

his column is being written on the first day of April, a day in early spring.

Spring comes happily in the words of the poets, easing us through the last of the winter, calling attention to the birds, buds, and shoots; the signs of spring gaily sought by every scarved and booted child in kindergarten: skunk cabbage and pussy willow.

And with spring comes the colour green.

As we move through April and new life stirs in parks and gardens, all around us is the colour green.

There are so many tints and shades and varieties of the word “green” that sometimes I wonder how its five letters can carry so much weight.

Although we use it somewhat negatively to mean immature or gauche, it may also describe the gently aging and the innocent. The poet Dylan Thomas talks of his green and golden childhood, and of being “happy as the grass was green.”

While we may wonder why it is the colour of leaning over the side on a heaving deck, or of the monster jealousy, we may also be pleased that one of the few ideas that has ever met international agreement is that green means Go. Go on green at the intersection. Go at the army headquarters, or around the boardroom table when the project or action is given the green light.

Christopher Morley writes, “April prepares her green traffic light and the world thinks Go.” Green is the result of sunlight and rain, the heart of the natural world. It heals us and shields us and nourishes the soil that sustains us. It quietens the wind for the forester and the farmer, provides shelter for animals and homes for birds, and though it must die to do so, gives us wood for our homes, our furniture and fires.

Joined with another word, it works even harder.

Green cheese is not what the moon is made of, but is cheese that is new and fresh or not of the best quality; gardeners, whether green-thumbed or not, are plagued by the aphid, the plant louse they call green fly; there are greengages, greenhouses, and greenstones; we go to the vegetable market now, but a few people still buy from the greengrocer.

Greenland, which is far from green, was so named to disguise its white harshness and induce settlers to go there.

There’s a fish called greenling, and birds called greenfinch, greenlet, greenshank, and greenback, which as you know, is also the name given to legal tender notes in the United States.

Actors wait to go on stage in the green room, even if it is painted any colour but green, and legend tells us that Robin Hood courted Maid Marian in the greenwood, the forest in spring and summer when the trees are green with leaves.

s much as we all love our pets, we hate to think about internal and external parasites that our pet could be carrying, and worse yet, the potential of affecting our own health.

There has been a lot of interesting studies done in recent years by CAPC, which is the Companion Animal Parasite Council.

The studies suggest that the incidence of parasites may be far greater that we ever thought, and that has brought about new recommendations to prevent parasites in our pets.

Internal parasites include roundworms, tapeworms, whipworms, hookworms, and heartworm, as well a few other intestinal parasites like giardia.

External parasites include fleas and ticks, ear mites, and mange mites are of main concern.

pril is wildlife awareness month and the BC SPCA would like to do a little trash talking.

Whether they eat it, get entangled in it, or are poisoned by it, wild animals are injured or killed by garbage every single day.

With spring (and spring cleaning) upon us, now is the perfect time to reflect on the impact trash has on wildlife and what we can do to help.

Some people just don’t see the harm in littering or not recycling, but the truth is that in addition to being bad for the environment, even a single piece of litter can be very dangerous to wild animals.

And not all littering is intentional.

Garbage can easily be spilled when the truck comes around on pickup day, or animals such as crows, raccoons, and skunks can get into a trash bag and spread garbage around as they forage for food.

Trash on the ground harms birds and land animals, but can also wash into storm drains and eventually end up in streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans, where it causes further injury to aquatic animals.

Items such as cigarette butts, plastic caps and lids, and plastic bags are choking hazards.

Should an animal mistake a plastic cap for food and manage to swallow it, the danger isn’t over – these items can cause life-threatening blockages of the animal’s digestive system.

Trash talk

The good news is that we can all make a difference with a few simple actions: • Recycle as many plastic products as you can.

• Buy things with less packaging.

• Cut all six-pack rings so animals can’t be caught in them.

• Avoid products that come in plastics you cannot reuse or recycle.

• Bring your own cloth bags when you go to the grocery store.

• Ask your local grocery store to promote cloth bags.

• Pack your lunch in a reusable lunch bag with reusable containers.

• Use refillable water bottles instead of buying bottled water.

Once trapped, animals struggle to remove the item but if unsuccessful, starve to death.

Animals can also be injured and suffer deep neck wounds as they frantically try to free themselves.

Out in the water items like six-pack rings and discarded fishing line can entangle birds, fish, turtles, and other wildlife, causing death by strangulation or drowning.

These items can also wrap tightly and painfully around animals, cutting into wings and legs and preventing them from feeding or moving properly.

Animals can develop fatal infections, lose limbs, or starve.

The City of Pitt Meadows Public Works Department will be flushing water mains throughout the municipality for approximately twelve weeks beginning March 19, 2012. During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water.

To correct problems with milky water, open the cold tap slightly to bleed air from the water lines. If you experience problems with dirty water, turn on an outside tap and let it run until the water clears. ...continued from page A1 But for Gordon, it was hard to put a finger on what she felt was her most important volunteer contribution, whether it’s her work in the arts community, with the recycling society, housing issues, or food security.

“I think I have made a difference with all the organizations I’ve worked with and the people – they’re all great people,” she said.

Gordon was nominated by Julie Koehn, founder of the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society, an organization she has spent many years supporting as a volunteer and board member.

“If I were to die tomorrow, I would feel I made an environmental difference with the recycling depot,” Gordon said.

Gordon started her environmental activism at the age of 13 after learning about the dangers of DDT, a commonly used insecticide. Living in Montreal, she went around her neighbhourhood telling people about DDT, and going into their gardening sheds on her hands and knees, looking for the dangerous substance, saying things like “Mr. Brown, I don’t

As a young adult, Gordon wanted to move to a more rural community and ended up in Maple Ridge in 1980.

When she moved to Maple Ridge, there was a thriving music scene in town that she got involved in. Gordon said she’s not

at all “musically inclined,” but “I’m practising at being the greatest audience.”

Later her enthusiasm for music and the arts got her involved in planning an arts centre, which eventually resulted in The ACT being built. Other organizations she’s volunteered for include Cythera Transition House, the

municipal social planning advisory committee, and the Building Community Solutions committee.

Gordon was a founding member of the Alouette Home Start Society that helps the local homeless and the hard-to-house population, which will soon be opening second-stage housing.

Gordon has also been involved

in food security initiatives, as a founding member of the Haney Farmers’ Market, and the chair of the Agricultural Advisory Committee.

Koehn called Gordon a “community treasure” and said she watched Gordon’s “passion and hard work help our Ridge Meadows Recycling Society grow to the environmental support system it is today.”

“I know she has affected many people besides myself in a positive way,” Koehn said of the 2012 Citizen of the Year.

As a volunteer, Gordon is “hard working, creative, and committed to the tasks at hand,” Koehn said.

“She is a very intelligent visionary who shows empathy towards the people she is working with,” Koehn said. “She works towards consensus in issues and has shown great loyalty to the groups she has worked with.”

Receiving the award on Thursday evening, Gordon outlined her philosophy to the audience at Meadow Gardens Golf Course: “If you want to be happy, do not aim for happiness. Be of service to others, and it will come to you.”

Spring

April is time to start planting… or you can wait, if you prefer

A

pril is a fairly forgiving month for gardening. Many vegetables can be seeded or transplanted outside – that includes broad beans, peas, radishes and cool-weather leafy crops such as arugula, spinach, chard, and kale.

But among crops that dislike April planting are garlic and multipliers. Late planting ends in a late harvest of small bulbs due to lack of development time. Some gardeners try to get around that by

Some crops are frustrating. For instance, parsley takes many weeks to germinate. Parsnips have a low percentage of germination even from fresh seed (buy two packets and plant thickly).

Beetroots germinate in clumps because each ‘seed’ is a fibrous ball containing several seeds.

It’s time now to plant seeds of warmweather crops inside. That includes tomatoes, tomatillos, and peppers.

Some gardeners start seeds inside in early March, but timing can be tricky.

Our springs are often cold and wet, and it’s frequently best to wait to the end of May before transplanting warm-weather crops outside.

Tomatoes started inside can outgrow their pots in a few weeks, and not all gardeners have the space or time to move them into larger containers before they can go outside.

Squash started inside can overflow its pots even faster.

This is also a good time to brave showers outside and plant rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, and other kinds of berries, as well as fruit trees.

Herbs and perennials can also be put in now. In April, the number of choices in garden centres is at its peak.

Also, the garden club plant sale season is just starting. Wonderful bargains abound in these sales, along with plant-growing information – often given by the gardeners themselves.

But it’s always practical to ask about invasiveness.

Plant groups such as violets, lamiums, epimediums, lysimachia, and cranebills all contain species which beginners love because they’re pretty and unkillable, but which more experienced gardeners want to remove.

Larger bulbs should be dead-headed, but the smaller ones flower so quickly from their scattered seed, they can be left to spread.

Towards the end of April, dahlias, lilies, anemones, and other summer bulbs can be planted out.

Also, gladiolas, make a good succession crop if a few are planted every week.

People who want an easy-care summer can mulch their borders with bark mulch or weed-free compost.

Mushroom manure can be a good mulch for plants that like alkaline conditions, but rhododendrons, blueberries, and azaleas hate it.

Spring-flowering shrubs can be pruned once they’ve finished flowering. That includes

forsythia, Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas), ‘white forsythia’ (Abeliophyllum distichum), winter honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissima) and any dead, broken, or rootstock suckers of witch hazel.

Winter heather needs trimming back into the green parts of the stems.

Conifers can also be pruned back into the green.

Both refuse to re-shoot from dead, brown stems.

In rural gardens, old, dead, hardy fuchsia branches should be cut to the ground.

But gardeners in areas where deer eat fuchsias might try leaving the bare, dry branches.

Deer don’t like putting their faces into scratchy twigs.

Mammograms saving lives

A

ging is the highest risk factor for breast cancer, and finding it early means more treatment options and a better ability to recover, says the BC Cancer Agency.

About one in nine women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. One in 28 women is expected to die from the disease.

The Screening Mammography Program provides free mammograms to woman between the ages of 40 to 79 years old.

They are quick and easy x-rays of the breasts that are done in complete privacy by

a specially-trained female technologist. An appointment takes about 15 minutes.

The cancer agency has 38 locations and three mobile vans that cover the province.

One of the vans was in Pitt Meadows last month, and is set to return this summer.

Organizations can book one of the mobile mammogram vans to come to their locations if they so choose, and many screening centres will arrange for block bookings - so that women can come as a group.

A national campaign is on to decrease the spread of diseases.

pril 21 to 28 is National Immunization Week put on by the Canadian Coalition for Immunization Awareness and Promotion. This coincides with World Immunization Week promoted by the World Health Organization.

The coalition is encouraging everyone to keep their vaccinations up-to-date starting from infancy right through adulthood.

The coalition points out that 100 years ago, infectious diseases were the leading cause of death around the world. Currently in Canada, because of immunization programs, they cause less than five per cent of all deaths.

veryone Jump is a school-based program coming to Maple Ridge Elementary today, that’s aimed at teaching local kids healthy behaviours that can reduce their risks of having type 2 diabetes.

The Everyone Jump concert brings the program to life with concerts held at select schools across the country, including a visit to the local River Road school Tuesday morning.

“It is well known that type 2 diabetes is largely a preventable disease with healthy eating, regular physical activity, and the maintenance of a healthy body weight. Yet the rising incidence of this illness, coupled with obesity, particularly among children, is a growing concern across Canada,” said concert organizers. They’re anxious to bring their prevention message to Maple Ridge, but also want to recognize the local students for their efforts to learn about the disease and ways to prevent it.

“I did it almost for free for a friend of mine, as a Christmas gift,” Ruis said. “I spent seven weekends in this place. I got a website out of it and business cards that I had to pay for, but the flip side is, that’s where I met my wife to be.”

Owning a home in the Walnut Grove area gives Ruis a thrill, because it gives him a blank canvas: walls.

He has a 1950s mural in his basement. The 10’ by 24’ wall of art, which took Ruis roughly 150 hours to complete, is a homage to iconic cultural figures James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart, and Elvis Presley.

He and wife Monika bought the house a while ago and, for as long as he could remember, Ruis always wanted to paint on his walls.

While growing up in Mackenzie, Ruis had a falling out with his art teacher while attending Grade 10 at the local secondary school. The artistic differences he and his teacher had were part of the reason Ruis’s artistic career had a slow start.

“So even when I graduated, there was 80 people in my grad class, and I didn’t apply for any art scholarships,” he said.

“It turned out to be good because, just the way things worked out.”

Airbrushing became his medium of choice when, A wedding portrait while moonlighting at a put on canvas. beer and wine store, he met renowned airbrush artist Paul Archer.

“I apprenticed under him for three or four years and that’s how I learned how to airbrush,” Ruis said.

Ruis, whose passion is photo-realism, said anyone can airbrush, but it takes a lot of patience.

“There’s a lot of variables between air pressure, chunks in your paint… it’s like anything, you have to tell yourself you can do it and you can do it,” he said.

Ruis is offering his artistic services to others, and is looking to put his artistic More stamp on kids’ rooms, theatre rooms, and Photos beyond.

95-year-old swimming in accolades

A long-time Maple Ridge resident has been nominated for a Woman of Distinction award.

Ann Meraw still wears the watch she was given 82 years ago from Brittania Mines after her very first swim competition.

“I had never been in a race before and it was in Burrard Inlet,” said the 95-year-old dynamo.

“My dad said take your swimsuit, so I thought for sure we were going to a picnic because mother was packing a lunch. But my father had entered me in the races,” Meraw said, adding that she was the youngest of the 79 swimmers entered.

That day she won three trophies and 13 prizes.

After the races, they attended an awards reception.

“I got called up to the stage to get the awards and they asked me what swim club I belonged to, and I said I don’t belong to any club,” Meraw recalled.

They also said she had to have an amateur card to qualify for any awards, which she didn’t have.

“That’s when the president of the Vancouver Amateur Swimming Club rushed up on the stage and said ‘if she joins our club now will she get her awards?’ And they agreed, the rest is history,” Meraw explained, adding that she went on to win seven world records, four of which she says still stand. In 1956, Meraw set a new ladies world record and ladies world endurance record by swimming 45 miles in 25 hours and one minute. In 1957 she swam 32 miles in 16 hours and 14

minutes. Both of these records still stand.

Meraw became Canada’s first female registered lifeguard, and the only woman coach ever in the World Professional Federation of Swimming. She earned her living as a lifeguard, swimming coach, instructor, and examiner.

Over the years, she saved 63 people from drowning, seven as a lifeguard and the rest during her many thousands of hours of swimming.

Fast forward 82 years and Meraw is still winning awards and accolades.

The YWCA recently announced 71 nominees for its 29th annual Women of Distinction Awards and Meraw is up for the award in the

Liberals mark Charter’s 30th anniversary with celebration

Thirty years ago on a windy grey day on April 17, 1982, then-

prime minister Pierre Trudeau and Queen Elizabeth sat at a table outside the Parliament in Ottawa and signed the Canada Act, thus giving Canada its own Constitution and its Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

To celebrate the historic occasion, federal Liberals in Pitt

Meadows, Maple Ridge, and Mission will host a live event at 4 p.m. today (April 17), at the Heritage Park Centre, 33700 Prentis Ave., Mission.

The event will feature Liberal MP John McCallum, and on the big screen from Toronto, former prime minister Jean Chretien and

federal Liberal leader Bob Rae. McCallum, MP for MarkhamUnionville in Ontario, will speak about the significance of the Charter to Canadians.

“We’re extremely excited to have him here,” said Brian Rice, president of the Liberal Party of Canada riding association in Pitt

Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission.

Although Liberals host the event, everyone will be welcome.

Rice said the partisanship will be kept to a minimum.
