The first in a series of stories about alcohol maintenance programs looks at MAP

hree upside-down bottles of vodka are mounted to a wall bar-style in a brightly lit, antiseptic room inside the Station Street Community, a year-old supportive housing building near the bus and train station. A cooler stocked with boxes of Naked Grape pinot grigio and Cariboo Genuine Draft hums in a corner.

At 10:30 a.m., a nurse dispenses drinks to six people who’ve been waiting in the adjacent common room. Two aboriginal men who’ve been sitting at computers carry away pints of beer. One woman, who’s been watching Who Wants to Be a Millionaire on the gigantic flat screen TV, peels herself away from the couch to grab an ounceand-a-half of vodka, while another woman says, “Vodka give me a headache in the morning,” and opts for a 5 oz. glass of wine.

The slight native man with chestlength hair carries his pint and a half of beer to the office of Clare Hacksel, project manager of Station Street. Until he started MAP, Jones spent his days in Downtown Eastside bars, drinking vodka, Fireball cinnamon whisky and beer from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., when he’d stagger home, pass out, or, more often than not, get in a fight and end up at in

the emergency room. He’s been to the hospital four or five times since October, a significant drop from his previous four to five visits a week.

Jones, who grew up in Port Alberni, hopes to eventually enter detox for the second time. “I want to get back in shape and I then want to go back to work,” says the former roofer who has cirrhosis of the liver. “I want to slow down on this drinking bullshit for a while.”

Hacksel says the program, which provides eight severe alcoholics

with an almost hourly dose of alcohol from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. every day, seems to be improving Jones’s and others’ lives. “Detox wasn’t an option when he was getting so drunk you’re passing out,” says Hacksel, who has a master’s degree in health policy from England’s University of Oxford.

Providing alcohol to severe alcoholics is one of the newer harm reduction approaches to addiction being explored in Vancouver. PHS has offered an informal managed alcohol program at the Pennsylvania Hotel for the last year and a half while Station Street’s MAP is being evaluated by the Centre for Addictions Research for B.C., and an illicit alcohol drinkers’ group recently started at the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users.

r. Ron Joe ran a family practice in the Downtown Eastside in the early 1990s. The mild-mannered physician recalls being called to the Portland Hotel to revive people who were overdosing on heroin.

Too many of his patients had chronic alcohol and drug problems, so he was happy to start working

for Vancouver Coastal Health in 1997 to develop programs that could serve a broader population.

He’s been the health authority’s manager of inner city addictions for the past two years and some of the participants in MAP are his longtime clients.

Seven of the eight MAP participants are aboriginal people, three are women and most report traumatic upbringings that include parents who abused alcohol. All eight are in anger management counselling. Most are aged 40 to 50, have been abusing alcohol for 30 years and have relapsed after stints in detox. Six have abused non-beverage alcohol such as Listerine, rubbing alcohol, cooking sherry, hand sanitizer and hairspray.

Some prefer rubbing alcohol because it provides the highest alcohol content. Dr. Joe notes individuals can buy a 500 ml bottle of 95 per cent rubbing alcohol for $3, dilute it and drink it for an equivalent of 30 beers or servings of wine.

“Our worst clients are drinking two or three or four of these [bottles] a day, so we’re talking about 120 drinks a day,” he says.

Doctor says long-term effects of non-beverage alcohol are unknown Continued from page 4 When extreme alcoholics know where their next drink is coming from, they can manage their withdrawal symptoms and start thinking about what else they’d like to do with their day, Dr. Joe says.

Jones has been receiving help for anger management, counselling and seeing a native elder for three years but he’s only been making regular appointments since October.

Some have seen dentists, had their teeth fixed and can now eat more nutritiously.

MAP’s goal is to reduce hospital visits, encounters with police and the number of drinks each participant consumes, while improving their overall health. Severe alcoholics who imbibe in public often end up in emergency rooms after they’ve blacked out, suffered a seizure, fought or fallen.

Dr. Joe says the long-term effects of drinking rubbing alcohol, Listerine and other non-beverage alcohol are unknown because they haven’t been tested for human consumption. But as with the abuse of beverage alcohol, seizures, bleeding ulcers, liver problems and an exacerbation of depression and schizophrenia are common.

“When someone’s intoxicated on something like rubbing alcohol, there tends to be a lot more rage present,” Hacksel adds.

Severe alcoholics withdrawing

from alcohol require vigilant supervision due to the possibility of seizures, swallowing their tongues, choking on their vomit and dying.

Dr. Joe says MAP participants didn’t need to be convinced to reduce the quantity and concentrate of alcohol they were drinking. He was surprised to discover that was something they wanted to do.

Prior to joining the program, participants typically consumed 30 or more drinks a day. The program’s goal is to reduce that number to 12.

So far, participants appear, on average, to have cut their consumption by more than half since October and have shifted from non-beverage to beverage alcohol. Their health seems to be improving and they are causing fewer disturbances at Station Street.

Prior to getting a dose, participants are asked if they’ve had anything else to drink. If they have or appear intoxicated, they forego their prescribed drinks that day.

MAP costs roughly $350 per person per month. But Dr. Joe sees providing free drinks as a significant cost saver, as one emergency room visit costs $1,500. “I’ve heard a lot of alcoholics tell me that I’m not $1,500, I’m $10,000,” the physician says, explaining costs stack up swiftly when an injury requires a cast, overnight stays, a follow-up and an MRI or two. “Abstinence-based avenues, for a vast majority of alcoholics, that’s the treatment,” says Dr.

Joe addressing concerns that some members of the public might balk at paying for booze for alcoholics.

“Although there seems to be a lot of them on the street in [this] area of the city, the reality is when you look at all the problem drinkers, they’re really less than one per cent.”

During the project, researchers will note changes to participants’ behaviour, mental health, and their physical state and test their blood every three months. The Centre for Addictions Research for B.C. will evaluate MAP and consider participants’ medical records prior to enrolment, number of emergency room visits, total alcohol consumption and whether

supportive housing has an impact on the program’s outcomes.

anada’s first managed alcohol program started in Toronto 15 years ago with subsequent programs starting in Ottawa and Hamilton.

A 2006 study of a managed alcohol project in Ottawa published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that police encounters were reduced from an average of 18.1 to 8.8 per month. Emergency room visits fell from an average of 13.5 per month to eight. Blood tests measuring the amount of alcohol in participant’s blood didn’t change significantly, but all participants reported less alcohol consumption,

and service providers reported improved health, compliance with medical care and hygiene.

Hacksel says Station Street’s space to dispense drinks, provide programming to keep tenants engaged and its “robust staffing” make MAP possible. Having a room of one’s own and a supportive community helps addicts cope with repressed feelings that “bubble up” when they aren’t severely intoxicated. “Now they have a place where they can go up and cry in their rooms in dignity, or see a counsellor,” Hacksel says.

Jones turns his head away at the end of the Courier interview after talking about being beaten by his parents and molested by a babysitter, when he’s asked to respond to concerns that taxpayers might not want to help fund free liquor for extreme alcoholics. Jones leaves with his beer to go to his room where he’ll wait for Hacksel to call him a counsellor.

andy Barnhart used to think those who drank rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer and Listerine were pathetic. Instead, he’d steal to afford Polar Ice vodka and crack.

But in 2007, alone and penniless, the newcomer to Vancouver accepted a few swigs of Listerine in Oppenheimer Park in exchange for a cigarette. “I took like five sips, big ones, and I was drunk, so I just thought that was pretty cool.”

Continued from page 5 “I’ve been on it since,” says Barnhart, a spaced-out 27-year-old who stands out among the other 30 people gathered for a meeting of the Eastside Illicit Drinkers’ Group for Education, or EIDGE, at the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users on East Hastings. He stands out for his youth and the striped toque and sweater that conjure powdery slopes.

Most of the others have weathered faces and dark hoodies, coats and caps.

The young man who says he was raised by bikers in Prince Albert, Sask., joined EIDGE to gain “insight” on the physical effects of what he imbibes. But Barnhart, who continues to smoke “lots” of crack, sees silver flashes of light in his peripheral vision and vomits “green stuff” every morning, can’t resist the economical way of getting intoxicated.

“I like ’em because it’s cheap and you don’t need much of it to get drunk,” he says. “The liquor store closes at 9, 10, I can walk into a 7-Eleven, London Drugs and buy [Listerine] from there. And the hand sanitizer, I break into the outhouses at construction sites and I take it from inside the outhouse, the hand sanitizer, and it’s a big bag. Those bags cost, like, a hundred bucks, and it lasts all day.”

The BC/Yukon Association of Drug War Survivors with the support of the B.C. Centre for Disease Control saw a need last summer to better connect non-beverage alcohol drinkers to supports offered to drug user. (WAHRS prefers the term “illicit alcohol” because it includes home-distilled alcohol and

liquids such as vanilla extract, and it’s analogous to illicit drugs.)

The Centre for Disease Control subsequently funded a research project at VANDU, and the research participants formed EIDGE to explore ways of improving the safety of severe alcoholics.

They’ve discussed a buddy system, making sure unconscious individuals are lying on their sides and watching out for severely inebriated men and women on the street who are vulnerable to theft and sexual assault.

EIDGE also wants to establish a place where drinkers, particularly those who may not be able to hold onto their housing, would be prescribed drinks, receive help with housing and fast-tracked referrals to detox. “It’s so hard to get in [to detox],” says one wizened middleaged man who wanted to get into detox but had to wait six days. “By the time they got me in there I’d already got fed up and started drinking again.”

Rob Morgan, a co-founder of EIDGE and former injection heroin and cocaine user who now opts for Listerine although he splurges on beer at The Cambie on cheque day, says he’s faced stigma at meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous. “I felt like the black sheep, because anytime they tried to ask me what you drink and you say Listerine, they say, ‘Oh man I would never go that far,’ so I didn’t feel that engaged in that,” he says. “I went to all the different AA groups in Vancouver and I always got that repulsive stay away [sense from them].”

The space that EIDGE envisions

would likely require potential visitors to attend a certain number of EIDGE meetings, be approved by members and undergo a medical screening. The group wants to see drinks administered hourly by a paid staff person, with frequent visits from street nurses and support provided by other illicit alcohol drinkers, so members would benefit from a sense of understanding and seeing someone they can identify with in a leadership role. Some EIDGE members want such a space to open early in the morning to help ease their withdrawal symptoms before they pursue temporary work or other daytime activities.

The Vancouver Foundation recently gave EIDGE a $51,980 grant to conduct community-based research into nonbeverage alcohol harm reduction options that could work in different communities around the province. The research is scheduled to start this summer.

So would Barnhart stop drinking Listerine and hand sanitizer if he could get regulated alcohol for free? “I probably would [stop], I would,” he says.

Barnhart, who’s been incarcerated multiple times for theft and kicked out of his Downtown Eastside hotel room for fighting, likes the idea of a safe place for drinkers. Although he says he didn’t go to hospital once last year, “I’ve been so sick from drinking I couldn’t walk so I just lied down in a parkade for hours and hours.”

Langley man says he told park board employee about goat plans

The owner of a Langley hobby farm says he notified the Vancouver park board he might have to get rid of a herd of goats he’d adopted from the Stanley Park petting zoo more than a year ago.

“I’m going through a divorce and my wife wants to sell the farm,” Trevor French told the Courier. “I’ve been finding homes for all of our animals.”

French is accused of inadvertently sending most of the 17 goats he adopted to slaughter by giving them away to new owners who sold them at auction. The park board believes French’s actions breached his contract with the board regarding the care of the animals.

During a Courier visit to his rural, five-acre farm Wednesday morning, a shaken-looking French said he went through an extensive application process before receiving approval to take the goats and four sheep from the petting zoo, which closed in January 2011. He described the chaos involved in loading the 21 animals on to his truck and trailer the day he arrived to pick them up. Once the animals were loaded, a park board employee handed him an envelope, which French assumed was a copy of his approved application.

“I didn’t even look at it,” he said. “I came home and threw it in a drawer. It wasn’t until all this happened that I finally read it.”

“All this” is the media storm and possible legal action French faces from the city. Park board chair Constance Barnes told the Courier French’s contract included strict restrictions surrounding the treatment and disposal of the goats and sheep, including a restriction forbidding selling the animals for meat.

French said he was in regular contact with a park board employee in the months following his adoption of the animals. Park board employees visited the farm for a follow-up. “I even sent [the employee] pictures,” said French.

“But now I hear she lost her job right around that time, so I don’t know if she received the email telling her I might have to find homes for the goats. But I have a copy of it.”

French said he was anxious to get rid of the horned goats due to their aggressive behaviour. He said he put up a sign on the bulletin board of the nearby feed store and placed an ad in an online farming newsletter asking for “good homes for free goats.” He said his wife had just moved out, so the fact he didn’t hear back from the park board was lost on him.

“It wasn’t a priority,” he said.

The Courier was unsuccessful in reaching French’s wife before press deadline.

French said he was devastated last week when park board general manager Malcolm Bromley picked up the last of the Stanley Park goats on his property. He said he surrendered the goat without argument to show he’s not the uncaring monster he believes the media portrayed him to be. He noted he’s received unpleasant, anonymous emails since the story broke.

“I was really sad when Malcolm took Honey [Tryka],” said French.

“We changed her name to Honey after we got her because she’s such a sweetheart. But he didn’t march in here and ‘seize’ her, like the media reported.”

During a tour of French’s farm Wednesday, the Courier was introduced to his remaining animals, which appeared healthy and friendly. At first, the issue raised by Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts seemed odd, even petty. TransLink, the billion-dollar regional transit authority, was surveying stakeholders to improve its communications strategy. Each of the 170 stakeholders who took part in the survey would be eligible for a $100 gift to their favourite charity. The total awards would apparently be capped at $5,000.

It’s an amount that probably wouldn’t even cover the cost of new doors on a bus. But here was one of the region’s most powerful politicians setting her hair on fire. She was—once again—demanding an external audit either by the provincial auditor or the newly created office of municipal auditor over this relatively miniscule sum.

There was no way, she said, she would agree to put another nickel of property tax into TransLink’s coffers until that happened: “Before we go back to the public with our hand out again, we’d better have that measure in place.”

It turns out Watts was not alone. In fact, she is leading a revolt by the region’s mayors. And it’s not just about a few thousand dollars.

According to North Vancouver District Mayor Richard Walton, the chair of the so-called mayor’s committee of TransLink, this revolt goes back a lot longer and runs much deeper than this recent quibble.

The “genesis,” he says, was in 2007. That’s when Liberal Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon, acting as the front man for then-premier Gordon Campbell, stripped the region’s mayors of their political power over transit.

Falcon used, as his excuse, the reaction to the strong-arm tactics from Victoria that put the Canada Line at the head of the queue and ahead of the regional priority, the Evergreen Line to service the north-east sector of the region.

A highly controversial series of motions dictated primarily by Victoria finally passed by the slimmest of majorities. But TransLink, Falcon declared, was “dysfunctional.”

And he set about changing the governance structure to what we have today. The operation is run by an appointed board, albeit approved by the mayors. (Although Walton says if the mayors didn’t approve the appointments, Victoria would just appoint them anyway.) And the mayors have a humiliating back seat with no control over the operating budget and little else to do but approve major projects

that give them the unsavoury task of jacking up property taxes.

Meanwhile, the province and Falcon continued to use TransLink as their personal playground. Falcon returned from a trip to Europe a few years ago to announce TransLink would be on the hook for its share of a $100 million plan to install turnstiles and gates.

And please note: even when the mayors agree to jack up taxes, as they did a few months back in a deal cut with the current Liberal Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom in exchange for TransLink getting a bigger cut of the gas tax, they find themselves humiliated. Premier Christy Clark stumbled into the issue and declared the mayors were causing harm to families. It wasn’t until Lekstrom took her aside to sort her out that she backed off.

Then there was, says Walton, the most recent bit of TransLink waste: the decision to spend $30,000 on a feasibility study to look at running a gondola up to Simon Fraser University on Burnaby Mountain. In your dreams.

Walton, Watts and the rest are hoping this uprising will lead to Victoria finally agreeing to a change that will restore power to them over transit decisions. Whether it does, the larger question still remains. Will putting the mayors in charge again significantly improve the region’s public transit?

The current regional tug of war, by the way, is deciding whether the next big transit investment will improve services to Surrey or put a new line through Vancouver’s West Side out to UBC. agarr@vancourier.com

Hurtig still beating the drum for Canada You could call Mel Hurtig, grey eminence behind The Canadian Encyclopedia, a longstanding Canadian institution. That might make him sound like a heritage building with a structural upgrade, but the respected 79year-old author and former publisher is still going strong. Last Saturday, he gave an animated speech at an event organized by local group “Occupy Ideas.”

After a few anecdotes about bear encounters on Banff golf courses, the former Alberta resident launched into a tirade against the tar sands (“Thanks to industry propaganda it’s now called the oil sands”). He followed with troubling factoids about the Enbridge Northern Gateway project: supertankers longer than the Empire State building carrying five to six times as much oil as the Exxon Valdez, the proposed doubling of Kinder Morgan’s pipeline volume into Vancouver, etc.

“I suggest what you should do is go occupy Christy Clark’s office and tell her unless she comes out strongly against oil tankers coming down the west coast of British Columbia you’re going to continue to occupy no matter how many people are arrested… The same thing with Mr. Dix, he has been very equivocal, has not been clear about where the NDP stands on this issue.”

You can’t accuse the man of being a shrinking violet, but you could certainly call him a Canadian nationalist. “Since Brian Mulroney abolished the investment review agency, how many Canadian companies have been taken over by foreigners?” he asked his audience. “How many have been blocked?” A few loud voices supplied the correct answers: 14,000 and two, respectively.

“How can we take back Canada when every single day we continue to sell off the ownership and control of our country?” It’s a good question.

Now that Harper’s agenda is no longer hidden, “but in the wide open,” the author says he’s never been more pessimistic about the future of our country.

The only hope he sees is for Canadians to become politically active in a big way, and soon.

“We are bloody lucky to live in this country, with our abundance of fresh water, incredible scenery, incredible amount of natural resources… and people from many parts of the world,” Hurtig insists. Yet we surrender this natural capital to others, by electing a series of sock puppets for transnational interests.”

He says he phoned the literary editor at the Vancouver Sun, who told him “she had never heard of the biggest publishing company in Canada,” even though M&S had launched the careers of Leonard Cohen, Pierre Berton, Margaret Atwood, Mordecai Richler and Michael Ondaatje, and had published Hurtig’s last two books.

The author has been hammering on the issue of national sovereignty for years, starting with his 1991 book The Betrayal of Canada, and his last from 2008, The Truth about Canada: Some Important, Some Astonishing, and Some Truly Appalling Things All Canadians Should Know About Our Country. The latter book drew on Statistics Canada figures to highlight Canada’s slide into Third World level indices for health care, education, research and development, and other areas of social spending.

When I interviewed Hurtig in a downtown Vancouver coffee shop back in 2008, he told me he was astounded that Canadian editorialists and business writers constantly parrot information from industry sources and right-wing think tanks that contradict Stats Can’s own figures—numbers that seem as alien to our pundits as String Theory.

He told me about documents that were leaked to him concerning a secret meeting of highpowered Canadians and U.S. officials in Banff on September 2006. He faxed every major newspaper about the particulars of this gathering, involving the “North American Security and Prosperity Partnership,” yet did not receive a single response.

“In those meetings were people like former American secretaries of state, people like Peter Lougheed, the former premier of Alberta, former U.S. secretary of state George Shultz, former U.S. secretary of defense [James] Schlesinger, etc. etc. and big business from Canada and the United States. And the media treated this as a nonexistent story. And that is bizarre. It’s unconscionable that the media wouldn’t report this information when it was handed to them.”

Thank you to the Courier for publishing Mark Hasiuk’s polemic against the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU).

Notwithstanding Mr. Hasiuk’s woefully ahistorical and unscientific understanding of drug policy, addiction and harm reduction, the article is a very good description of what VANDU does.

Yes: Our mandate is to give a voice to (and empower) current and former users of illicit drugs.

Yes: We recognize that drug use is often shaped by individual and collective experiences of oppression—of poverty, colonization, residential schools and childhood abuse.

Yes: We think being part of a social justice movement dealing with these experiences of oppression and violence is a positive social response and part of healing

from these experiences.

Yes: Seeking liberation from the criminalization, stigma and hate that people who use drugs are subjected to is part of this social justice orientation.

No: We don’t treat people who use drugs like they need to be fixed, and that the only legitimate conversation you can have with a drug user is about how they are going to stop using drugs.

Yes: We think people who use drugs can make positive contributions to our community and our city, for example by promoting pedestrian safety and access to public toilets in our neighbourhood and by advocating for housing, for raising the criminally low welfare rates, and for a drug policy based on public health, social justice and human rights.

Retired planners sing Toderian’s praises To the editor: Re: “Sullivan baggage, personality sink Vancouver city planner,” Feb.3.

Brent worked tirelessly to address the urgent issues of sustainability and affordability, while maintaining Vancouver’s tradition of good urban design and liveability. He inspired city staff with his enthusiasm. Brent has a very strong commitment to neighbourhood consultation: we witnessed him working hard to revise proposed plans based on public input. Regarding relationships with

developers, we observed Brent’s openness to and encouragement of new forms of development for “density done well.”

In addition to the often conflicting pressures of neighbourhoods and developers, Brent faced new challenges including filling the shoes of the two previous co-directors, major staff retirements, hiring freezes, economic downturn, and councils’ diminished respect for professional advice.

Thank you for your recent highlighting of the missing men at the Vancouver Courier. These disappearances are making me very ner-

vous. It has the same unexplained feel as the missing women and the same complacency “that all will work out.” The disappearances “may” not be connected, but something is definitely amiss.

Thoughtful replacement

Last November I wrote a column about a grieving mother devastated that a commemorative planter she and her daughter had purchased and attached to a memorial bench dedicated to her son had been stolen.

Linda Richardson was so heartbroken about the loss she wrote the Courier an angry letter because she needed to vent and didn’t know where to turn.

Richardson would tend to the planter at the bench on Kits Point as a way to feel closer to her son Terry, who died in March 2010 a few days shy of his 28th birthday.

Two weeks ago, Richardson wrote to say she hadn’t visited the bench since because she still felt sad. But one morning recently she stopped by on her way to work.

“And to my utter surprise found that someone had replaced the planter, a beautiful one. An incredible feeling of joy came over me. Someone cared enough to have gone to the effort to replace the stolen planter,” Richardson wrote. “I hope this special person reads this as I would like to thank then from the bottom of my heart for such a truly kind and thoughtful gesture.”

Langley hobby farmer Trevor French adopted 17 goats and four sheep from the Stanley Park Farmyard and petting zoo after the attraction closed in January 2011 due to park board budget cuts. Some of those goats may have been sold at auction and ended up as meat. (See page 7 for the Courier’s interview with French.)

De Genova is asking the park board to mandate that the remaining animals and birds adopted from the farm be visited by staff every six months until they die. De Genova said bringing the motion to a park board meeting would allow the public to speak on the matter. That item is expected to be included on the agenda of the next park board meeting Feb. 27.

New addition bumps Elsie Roy capacity from 350 students to 413

The Vancouver school district is optimistic it can accommodate most of the roughly 50 students on Elsie Roy elementary school’s waiting list for 2012/13 thanks to an addition on the school.

But the new International Village school will need to be built as soon as possible

to manage the increasing school-aged population downtown.

Yaletown’s Elsie Roy at 150 Drake St. has had to turn away some neighbourhood students since it opened in 2004 even though the Vancouver School Board shrunk its catchment area.

It wasn’t built large enough to handle demand. Its original capacity was 350 students, which has jumped

More families are choosing to live downtown rather than move to more suburban areas when they have children, which significantly strains downtown schools.

Deputy superintendent Jordan Tinney said the district is figuring out how to deal with Elsie Roy’s waiting list.

“We’re actually in the process right now of adding two kindergarten classes to use up all of the additional space that was developed at Elsie Roy,” he told the Courier Monday. “That will basically take 44 off the [waiting] list right away.”

as French immersion or Montessori and haven’t informed Elsie Roy yet, which could further reduce the list.

“We’re also working with False Creek, Hudson and Roberts [elementary schools] to find out if there are any other available spaces. We don’t have the final numbers there especially around Hudson,” he said. Tinney added that the long-term goal is to get the International Village school built.

Late last year, the provincial government announced approval for a long-awaited elementary school in the International Village neighbourhood. The school site, which is owned by the city, is located at 600 Abbott St., near Andy Livingstone Park. Timeline details weren’t included in the announcement.

Tinney explained that if Elsie Roy continues to accept 70 to 80 kindergarten students each year, the school won’t be able to handle the increased enrolment as the students move up in grades. “So our focus needs to be on getting International Village built as quickly as possible. Our board advocated it, they’ve got it and we just need to get it built,” he said.

Tinney asked the district’s director via email on the weekend if September 2013 was a realistic opening date for an International Village school. “His comment was, ‘That’s aggressive, but we need to give it every possible chance we can.’ We just want to get at it as quickly as we can.” noconnor@vancourier.com Twitter: @Naoibh

Gas station sites may grow produce

Strawberries, tomatoes, peppers and sweet corn could flourish on the sites of two old East Side gas stations and near Cambie Bridge if all goes as planned.

City council approved Feb. 14 three-year leases on the city-owned properties for the Blue Heron Charitable Foundation’s SOLEfood Farm.

Vision Vancouver Coun. Andrea Reimer called the news “a huge success story” on social, economic and environmental fronts.

SOLEfood provides training and jobs to people who have trouble finding work. They grow fruits, vegetables and herbs in underused urban spaces, and the produce is sold at farmers markets. With three new properties, the social enterprise could double the number of jobs it provides to at least 20.

Reimer notes restaurants and foodies are willing to pay “good money” for “hyper local” food.

“So instead of that money going to a distributor and then to a local buyer and then, eventually, to a farmer, it’s going directly to the SOLEfood Farm, and that, in turn, allows them to put money back into

training people and providing them with an opportunity to feel like they’re part of the workforce. And that has a huge social benefit for people who have been homeless or mentally ill or have drug addictions or had them, to feel like they’re integrated into a community because they’re productive in that community,” she said.

The gas station sites, at Main and Terminal, and Vernon Drive near the Grandview Viaduct and Clark, haven’t been used for 10 years and are being remediated. The property near the former Olympic Village awaits future development. The 0.2 acres could be leased for parking or storage. The city estimates the lost revenue to be $24,000 per year.

“It’s tough economic times, but only more reason to be investing in your most vulnerable, in a viable economic enterprise that’s also dealing with environmental outcomes,” Reimer said.

SOLEfoods would install raised beds on the sites. The gardens would offer educational tours during the growing season.

Seann Dory, co-director of SOLEfood Farm, was cautiously optimistic about the approval.

“We still have a long process to

go through to see if these sites are even going to be useable,” he said.

Three other prospective spots for SOLEfood farm plots have withered after initial approvals.

SOLEfood enjoyed its first growing season in 2010 and works one garden at East Hastings and Hawks.

It has supplied the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House and the Potluck Café with produce and supplied cut lettuce for the food bank.

SOLEfood is selling shares for a community supported agriculture program where members pay in advance for a portion of the farm’s produce and receive fresh food at a discount. SOLEfood is hoping the shares purchasers will donate money to low-income people’s shares.

“If they donate, they might get a little more buying power on their share, but that also is going to purchase shares for people in the neighbourhood,” Dory said.

He hopes to make “big announcements” in the next two months.

Reimer said the city hopes to approve development permits for the gardens within three months.

Looking for balance

I remain curious about where support for yearround school is coming from, how much support there actually is, and whether there’s any opposition. I’ve written a few stories about the Vancouver School Board’s plan to launch a year-round school pilot project—potentially in three to six elementary schools. It’s also known as a balanced calendar and involves shortening the summer break and adding longer breaks between sessions.

Proponents maintain it cuts down on learning loss during summer months, especially for vulnerable students, and that it fits in better with the modern-day schedules of families.

Steve Cardwell The job action is preventing consultation with teachers, so I doubt a pilot will be implemented any time soon. But superintendent Steve Cardwell was quoted in a Globe and Mail article earlier this week in which he mentioned the district would like to start it as early as September 2012 or 2013.

Cardwell told the reporter there hasn’t been much opposition and some schools have expressed interest in

being part of the pilot. He’s told me in the past that interest has to come from school communities to be considered for the initiative.

The only school I’ve seen mentioned as interested is Thunderbird elementary on the East Side.

VSB spokesperson Kurt Heinrich told me in an email that Thunderbird has come up because “it’s arguably the furthest ahead when it comes to community/parent/stakeholder discussions around this.

But even they are only in initial phases of discussion about the concept and what it could look like.”

When I pressed for more details about which other schools have expressed interest Heinrich couldn’t specify. “…it’s just at too early a stage right now to say X school and Y school are considering it because right now the main people who’ve expressed interest are various administrators and some parents as opposed to the entire school community (parent community, students, teachers, staff, admin, other stakeholders),” he wrote. “Until that changes, we don’t want to go around saying ‘this particular school is looking to switch to a different calendar system.’”

But Heinrich insists September 2013 isn’t an impossible goal to meet. “What we really are hoping to do with this is open up a dialogue about the idea of moving to balanced calendar. “It’s a dialogue that we expect a number of schools to have in future and which will likely accelerate once job action is done and we can really start to talk with our teachers,” he said.

Tomasson recommended Dickinson be sentenced to a jail term between 15 and 18 months, and another one to three months for breaching a curfew imposed in an unrelated assault case.

Dickinson violated his curfew by going downtown to watch the Stanley Cup final game between the Vancouver Canucks and the Boston Bruins at the city’s so-called live sites set up around the main branch of the Vancouver Public Library.

Tomasson said Dickinson could have returned home but chose to participate in the riot and “enjoyed what he was doing that evening.” The day after the riot, Dickinson recounted his exploits with a friend on Facebook, saying he flipped a Smart car and cop car, the court heard.

Lawyer Eric Warren, acting on behalf of Dickinson, recommended a sentence of one year in custody, along with treatment and therapy for his client’s issues with anger.

But he rejected Tomasson’s suggestion that Dickinson was an instigator. Warren read a note to the court penned by Dickinson in which he said, “I’m ashamed and deeply embarrassed. I was caught up in the moment. I made some very bad decisions that day.”

The court heard Dickinson had previous convictions for assault and concealing a weapon related to two incidents as an adult and one as a juvenile. The overall estimated damage caused by rioters during the Stanley Cup riot is $3.7 million, according to a Crown lawyer prosecuting a man for his role in last June’s mayhem downtown.

The bulk of the damages was $2.7 million to businesses, including $900,000 to the Bay at West Georgia and Granville, which had its windows smashed out by rioters, said Crown prosecutor Patti Tomasson during Tuesday’s sentencing hearing of Ryan Dickinson, 20, of Coquitlam.

Tomasson said 70 employees and customers sought refuge on the Bay’s seventh floor while loss prevention officers remained on the first floor in an attempt to stop the hundreds of people ransacking and looting the store. Smoke from vehicles set ablaze outside the Bay filtered into the store, setting off the store’s alarms. Tomasson said the 70 people on the seventh floor feared the building was on fire and began phoning loved ones.

A similar story unfolded at the Blenz coffee shop at 495 West Georgia, where the owner and four others in the store barricaded themselves in an office for four hours.

They also thought the store was on fire, said Tomasson, adding that Blenz sustained $100,000 in damages and closed for two months for repairs. “In the Crown’s submission, the riot was akin to a home invasion of the whole community,” she told the court.

Tomasson outlined these events in a sentencing hearing for Dickinson, the first person to plead guilty for participating in the riot. Vancouver Provincial Court Judge Malcolm McLean was expected to deliver his sentence yesterday at 2 p.m., after the Courier’s print deadline. (See vancourier. com for updates.)

Fund not cited by name in city’s annual financial report

Mayor spent $85,934 on PR consultants Stanley Tromp

Contributing writer Mayor Gregor Robertson spent thousands of dollars from a little known city hall fund on consultant services, mainly “social media strategy and production, strategic political advice, and public relations.” The goal was to improve outreach to the public through non-traditional means.

The total budget allocated for the mayor’s discretionary fund was $128,400 for each year of 2009 to 2011, and most of it was spent.

Within this amount, the mayor spent $85,934 for consultants in 2011, $86,587 in 2010, and $61,721 in 2009.

The rest was spent for travel and training.

In the city’s public annual financial report, the mayor’s fund—over which the mayor and his chief of staff have signing authority—is included but not mentioned by name within the generic budget category called General Government.

(This category accounted for $176 million in 2010, and the 2011 numbers are not yet available.) The mayor’s fund numbers are not broken down in the report, so the Courier obtained these through the freedom of information law.

Overall, the payments from the mayor’s fund are extremely small within the context of the city’s yearly operating expenditures of about $1 billion.

The Museum of Anthropology hosts the Coastal First Nations Dance Festival next month.

The Museum of Anthropology at UBC plays backdrop to the Coastal First Nations Dance Festival March 8 to 11.

The annual Dancers of Damelahamid event gathers an array of aboriginal performance groups from across British Columbia, the Yukon, Alaska and abroad to share indigenous cultures and dance traditions through a series of school workshops, evening presentations and afternoon festival stage performances.

Festival performances are included with admission to the museum, while tickets to watch the dances must be purchased at ticketstonight.ca.

Growing up in Chilliwack, I was privileged to attend many First Nations festivals and events, so I know how spectacular the dancing and regalia can be. While pickles aren’t my passion, I love salty foods. I’d choose chips, popcorn or cheese over sweets anytime.

But my body isn’t impressed with my sodium obsession.

At the age of 27—just a few years ago (wink, wink)—I was diagnosed with extremely high blood pressure.

Since then, I’ve had to rein in my hankerings for the white stuff. I’m not exaggerating when I say this is an ongoing battle.

The relationship between sodium intake and blood pressure varies among individuals; some of us have blood pressures that are sensitive to our sodium consumption, while others don’t. I happen to fall into the “sodium sensitive” category: within 24 hours of eating too much salt, I have symptoms related to my blood pressure rising.

Although we need small amounts of sodium in our diets to maintain good health, research shows that we’re getting far too much.

On average, adult Canadians consume about 3,500 milligrams a day, which is well above the recommended daily intake of 1,200 to 1,500 mg and the upper tolerable limit for health: 2,300 mg.

Canadians who have the condition. In fact, reducing our daily sodium intake by 1,840 mg has the potential to prevent about one in seven deaths from stroke and one in 11 deaths from coronary heart disease.

The decreased incidence of hypertension would save our country at least $430 million annually in direct health care costs.

Lowering our salt intake is no easy task. According to Melodie Yong, the registered dietitian with Global TV’s morning news segment, One Bite at a Time, 77 per cent of the sodium we consume comes from processed foods sold in grocery stores, restaurants or fast food outlets; about 11 per cent is added while we cook or at the table. The remainder occurs naturally in food.

This isn’t good news given that the Canadian Council on Food and Nutrition indicates that of all the money spent on food in Canada, 40 per cent is shelled out in foodservice outlets. And on any given day in North America, 30 per cent of kids visit a fast food joint, says the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Because our country’s food products are among the saltiest in the world, Health Canada and organizations like the Canadian Stroke Network are working with food industry officials to lower the sodium levels of processed and packaged goods.

But as consumers, what can we do to control our sodium intake?

“Get in the habit of carefully reading nutrition labels for the number of milligrams of sodium in food,” says Yong, who has 10 years of experience providing heart health nutrition counseling.

“And be sure to check the serving size on the nutri-

A Percent Daily Value (% DV) of five per cent or less on the nutrition label means the food is considered low sodium; 20 per cent or more, is high.

“Look out for hidden sources of sodium in baked goods—breads, muffins, scones, cereals—it’s quite shocking the varying amounts between products.

And include a healthy dose of fruits and vegetables in your diet. These are generally low in sodium naturally and provide a powerhouse of nutrients,” says Yong.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that you’re doing yourself a favour by using kosher salt, sea salt or some other exotic type instead of table salt. These salts differ in terms of their additive and iodine content, but their basic composition is identical: they’re all sodium chloride and they have exactly the same impact on our bodies.

Docs keen to improve patient relationships

Though your doctor is the last person you should think of on Valentine’s Day, the patient-doctor relationship is one of your most important. Your health depends on it.

Ideally, it’s a relationship of mutual positive regard. You feel comfortable telling your doctor anything and everything, and you trust your doctor to give you the best care.

In turn, your doctor knows all about you, trusts you, guides you through the health care system and supports you through the highs and lows of life.

But like every other relationship, it is rarely perfect.

We can have communication problems—not surprising when we are speaking two different languages: Medspeak and normal English.

Misunderstandings are common. Even when the doctor writes instructions down, they can be hard to read. You might not feel bold enough to disagree with your doctor or admit that you won’t be able to follow through with the plan. Then you may feel embarrassed to come back not having adhered to it.

If communication has been particularly bad, you may har-

davidicuswong bour negative feelings towards your doctor. Some people never see doctors for this reason. Of course, uncomfortable physical examinations are another. The reasons for conflict and discomfort are complex.

Doctors are human, too, with their own priorities and emotional reactions. Sometimes our styles and personalities clash. As with all our relationships, we each bring emotional baggage to the bedside.

Medical school teaches us to be dispassionate and dissociated so that we can be objective and clear-headed in an emergency. If we do this too well, we can come across as cold and clinical. We learn a particular system of inquiry —a way of funneling down our questions from broad to narrow. When we become too

focused on disease and overly task-oriented, we may seem abrupt and rushed. Doctors are known to interrupt their patients’ answers in order to ask another question.

Patients sometimes feel like they are treated like a number or a disease. They want to be seen and treated as complete individuals. You might be surprised to hear that with very few exceptions, my colleagues invariably put the patient first.

The individual is the focus of every clinical encounter. It is the priority of all that we do—in our daily work, at our meetings, on rounds and in lectures. Doctors do care about your wellbeing but they don’t always show it. Have you ever felt unappreciated in a relationship then realized that you are valued in different ways?

The unlikely ascent of New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin is the stuff of Hollywood movies: From undrafted Harvard grad to couch-surfing bench warmer to NBA starter largely credited with his team’s winning streak to grizzled leader of a ragtag posse of zombie fighters forging a new beginning after the Apocalypse. Not only is Lin the first American player in the NBA of Chinese or Taiwanese descent, he credits God for his on-court success (we always thought the big guy was more of a football fan). Lin also has the hottest selling jersey in the league and he attracts sellout crowds wherever the Knicks play. In short, it’s the perfect “Linderella” story, many pun-loving sportscasters have said, written or grunted between yells of “Booya!” In fact, the craze has been dubbed “Linsanity,” while the Vancouver Sun went so far as to call it a “Linvasion.” Nicely played.

Frankly, we’re beginning to tire of the crop of Lin-related play-on-words, whether it’s “Linderella,” “Linsanity,” “Linvasion,” “Linmania” or “Linspiration.” Which is why K&K has come up with a batch of new Lin-related puns to use, beat

to death and eventually grow to despise.

• Lindow of opportunity: The brief period of time Lin has to capitalize on his fame and celebrity.

• Phantom Lin: The sensation that Lin is still playing, even after the game is over.

• Linsider trading: The unscrupulous sharing of information about Lin’s health, private life and personal hygiene ticks. (Apparently he brushes his teeth with Mennen Speedstick.)

• Lin and Bear it: The attitude fans must take when Lin eventually falters and doesn’t live up to their lofty expectations.

• Lin and tonic: Drink of choice for Linaholics.

• Linterest: A photo sharing website that allows users to post anything Lin-related and connect with other Linophiles, particularly women with lots of spare time to surf the Internet at work.

Not quite. Jones and his local cohorts spent the last few years working diligently to build this city’s cocktail culture, so much so it’s now regularly hailed internationally.

While big names in the biz, such as Bacardi, Gibsons and Hendricks, are indispensable in making it all happen, what’s striking about this cocktail extravaganza is the degree to which local products and talent are invited to ride on the coat tails of the heavy hitters of the liquor world.

We were introduced to remarkable flavours and cre-

ative combinations—such as St. Germain’s seductive Elderflower Liqueur, combined with single malt Bruichladdich Peat, Cynar (Italian artichoke liqueur) and Phillips Blue Buck Ale. An unlikely alliance, perhaps, but crafted

We weren’t surprised how the morning started at Tales of the Cocktail on Tour: with coffee and a shot of “Irish.”

It’s been a long time since we’ve done that, but that’s why we went—to taste the likes of Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey, which was a healthier addition to our coffee than the scoop of marshmallows, spoonful of chocolate shavings and South African Amarula Cream.

At cocktail vortex Fairmont Pacific Rim, staring down such indulgence was all in a day’s (and night’s) work for members of the Canadian Association of Professional Bartenders. That’s the organization credited with luring the celebrated New Orleans cocktail festival Tales of the Cocktail to Vancouver, Feb. 12 to 15, in the first place.

Twelve-year-old girls with long hair and skinny jeans faced boys, some of them shorter than the girls, and held their hands while they practised Latin American dance steps.

There was no eye contact between partners, but hints of smiles and squints of concentration among the 80 Grade 7 students who formed long rows in the scuffed gym at Queen Mary elementary on a recent afternoon.

“They’re learning more than just dance,” said the West Point Grey school’s vice principal, Shannon Burton.

While the school has brought in companies that teach more contemporary dance forms such as hip hop, it continues to bring back DanzKool’s Ballroom Dance Camp.

“It’s more communication based,” Burton said.

DanzKool founder and instructor Tim Mah didn’t appear concerned about the lack of eye contact between students.

“Dancing is a form of conversation,” he said. “It’s a conversation conducted between two people using hands to speak, no words are involved… I use that to try to explain to them why I’m putting them into this torturous situation that they absolutely don’t want to be in and they start to get it.”

The mid-February session was his seventh of eight at Queen Mary, a typical package he sells to elementary schools.

The 51-year-old resident of Dunbar stumbled into ballroom dance at the University of B.C. He and his ballroom partner Bernadette, now his wife, danced the samba, the cha cha and the waltz competitively for 11 years at the national and international level until his wife’s health tripped them up in 1994.

The man with a master’s degree in business quickly discovered a natural talent for holding the attention of more than a hundred teens at a time.

In 2005, Mah dispensed with his day job of career and business strategy consulting to teach secondary and elementary students ballroom dance.

He has since taught more than 5,000 students across the Lower Mainland.

Mah teaches elementary students swing, jive and Latin American dances and adds waltz and tango to the roster for high school students when he’s teaching 75minute classes.

“I just finished writing a short story for a contest and I was talking about a dance lesson, and I used the term, ‘the kids looked like a room of arthritics searching for a contact lens,’” he said. “That’s exactly what it looks like because [for] tango they have to stand close together, so they’re afraid to really move much.”

Last year, Mah brought together 150 Grade 7 students from two schools for a daylong Ballroom Blitz Danzfest at Lord Strathcona elementary. To win prizes, students had to dance with a partner from the other school. This year’s Danzfest in May will involve three schools.

steps, he sees their confidence rise.

When the second 40 Grade 7 pairs successfully completed a two-handed turn Wednesday, excited chatter erupted.

Mah told students they hadn’t mastered the move until they followed the turn with more steps.

So they completed the turned and added the steps.

“Yeah!” some students exclaimed. “High five.”

They pay attention because they don’t want to mess up for their partner and because they know they’re going to perform for their parents at their graduation ceremony in June.

Twelve-year-old Liam McQuaid told his friends he’d probably break an ankle during jive and Latin dance lessons.

“It seemed weird. I don’t like dancing.

I’m not a good dancer,” he said.

But the classes have turned that around.

A rivalry for the ages.

Boston Celtics versus Los Angeles Lakers, North Carolina Tar Heels versus Duke Blue Devils? These ancient basketball rivalries can get any hoops fan excited. However, for the Vancouver high school basketball fans who packed the newly built St. John’s school gym, which served as neutral-site host on Wednesday night for the independent school AAA league tie-breaker game, there is no better rivalry than St. George’s Saints versus Vancouver College Fighting Irish.

While Vancouver College is historically the most storied high school basketball program in British Columbia, this last decade has seen St. George’s press beyond the traditional sports from the old country to embrace basketball as a worthy enterprise. In doing so, St. George’s has elevated the pressure on Vancouver College faithful. A perennial Provincial contender, Vancouver College has not won a Senior Boys Provincial Championship since 1967. As frustrating as their narrow misses have been, none have been more climactically exasperating as the 2009 Provincial Championship Game in which St. George’s mercurial forward Emerson Murray drained a pull-up jump shot from the baseline at the buzzer to defeat Vancouver College.

Wednesday night’s game served as the tie-breaker of a three-game series to determine the 2012 Lower Mainland Independent League Champion. The importance of this pendulum-snaring result was not lost on any knowledgeable fan in the gym. For the victor, an assured berth in the Lower Mainland AAA Championships necessary to qualify for the AAA Provincial Championships. For the runner-up; frustration, anxiety, and a faint hope of appeal. No assurance their season will continue.

Both teams took the court with this knowledge and both teams competed with no regrets.

In a game that saw great competitiveness, intensity, and raw fan fervor, Vancouver College maintained single-digit leads throughout most of the contest.

However, with just under 40 seconds left in the game, St. George’s Saints narrowed the margin to two points at 51-49.

This is when the nerves seen by both teams earlier in the game were calm in the veins of Fighting Irish leader Isaiah Solomon who stepped up to the line for two free throws. After making the first shot, Solomon missed the second but

After the game, Solomon explained his ability to focus: “Just being calm. It was a lot of pressure just knowing the importance of the free throws. I just took my time and hit them.” Solomon further elaborated on the meaning of the St. George’s versus Vancouver College engagement: “It’s one of the biggest rivalries in B.C. It’s one of the best atmospheres to play in. We look forward to this game all year.”

Post-game, executive director of Canada Basketball Howard Kelsey effusively commented: “I thought it was a fantastic game, a fantastic rivalry. I think we need more rivalries like this in high school in all sports. It’s good for the community. It makes the community vibrant and alive to be involved in healthy activities.” UBC Mens Basketball head coach Kevin Hanson was also impressed.

“Seeing a crowd like this bodes well for the basketball community. That was as intense a game as I’ve seen this year.” More to the point for the UBC hoops guru looking to bolster next year’s squad: “There are a lot of players on both teams who have the potential

to play post-secondary basketball”.

The humble and thoughtful Vancouver College head coach Lloyd Scrubb added some reflective perspective after a gritty victory. “For both teams we can’t be assured of a second berth. It put an enormous amount of pressure on the game, a tremendous amount of pressure for the kids. You get these games when you have a rivalry.”

As the lonely final seconds counted down on the clock, Vancouver College fans in playful jest provided encouraging words to the distraught St. George’s boosters: “Maybe next year, maybe next year, maybe next year!”

Whether next year comes early for St. George’s by appeal for an extra playoff berth could be known this week. (Read accompanying story.)

Down the street from St. John’s at Prince of Wales secondary, the public school City Championships semi-finals were also being held on Wednesday night. Kitsilano Blue Demons defeated Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs 64-62 and two-time defending City Champions Sir Charles Tupper Tigers clawed back the upstart King George Dragons 65-48. Only one of two Vancouver private school senior boys basketball teams advance to the regional Lower Mainland zone tournament next week, meaning St. George’s and Vancouver College battled it out for the coveted spot Wednesday. The game wasn’t just played on the hardwood, however. A political challenge is ongoing.

The independent school sports association appealed to the Lower Mainland and B.C. boys basketball executives to create a second private school team berth at the regional tournament set for next week, which also qualifies five teams for the provincial championships.

A specially appointed committee denied the appeal and that decision was upheld Monday by the B.C. executive. The Board of Governors will also rule on the appeal. Last year, a back door playoff was created for the second-place independent school team to challenge for a spot at the Lower Mainland tournament.

Once Vancouver College advanced in a best-of-three series, St. George’s played three public schools, including two games against Kits, but lost.

James Johnston, president of the B.C. High School Boys Basketball Association, said he understands the frustration of the two Vancouver private schools.

“The unfortunate reality for the independent schools is that there are only two of them in a very large zone. The tradition of our association has been to use simple math to create berthing with the belief that that removes a lot of the politics from it.

If you do the math for the independents, they only get one berth to the Lower Mainland championship.”

The St. George’s Saints and Vancouver College Fighting Irish are ranked No. 3 and 4 in the province, respectively. “We had to take the rankings as one piece of information and compare that to the records of both teams, compare that to who they had both played and then make that part of a larger discussion,” said Johnston.

He said fair geographic representation has been a hallmark of the B.C. boys high school provincial championship since its inception more than 65 years ago. In other zones, such as the Fraser Valley, private schools compete alongside public schools.

If you ride regularly, you want to be comfortable on your bike. There are a few easy things you can do at home to make sure your bike setup is working as well as possible.

One of the most important things to look at is your seat. A seat that’s too high is a recipe for sore pressure points and achy hips; a seat that’s too low can lead to debilitating knee pain.

If you feel your hips moving from side to side across the top of the seat, the seat is most likely too high. If your knee is bent considerably at the bottom of the pedal stroke, the seat is most likely too low.

So how do you get seat height just right? The experts say that your foot is in the correct pedaling position when the ball of your foot is over the pedal and your knee is bent to approximately 25 degrees.

It’s not always possible to estimate knee angles accurately, so a quick way to figure this out is to move your foot so the heel rather than the ball of the foot rests on the pedal. Then adjust the seat so your leg is straight when you reach the bottom of the downstroke. When you move your foot back to the normal pedaling position, you should find that your knee is slightly bent.

time you spend in the saddle, the more important a comfy seat. Cheap gel covers don’t provide nearly the same level of comfort as a wellconstructed seat. Riding on a seat designed for the opposite gender is also not something I recommend; there are anatomical reasons for the different designs.

Handlebars are another key aspect of riding comfort since poor positioning can lead to all kinds of back, neck, shoulder, arm and wrist problems.

You want to be able to hold the bars so you can cycle with your elbows slightly bent and aren’t putting excessive weight through your hands and wrists. (The latter is especially important if you have repetitive strain injuries.) Keep your grip relaxed and try changing your hand position if you start to feel any soreness in your wrists or arms. I also recommend padded gloves; they’re not expensive and help cushion bumps and road vibrations.

These are easy tweaks to make, but the best investments you can make is a proper fit.

It’s easy to think of these recommendations as suited only to the long-distance or hardcore cyclist, but even commuter cyclists with a relatively short daily ride can benefit enormously from a bike that has been adjusted to accommodate the dimensions and idiosyncrasies of their particular body.

A fit doesn’t have to be expensive; most bike shops offer a basic fit for less than $100.

Beetle has plenty more competition in trendy small cars, but is still worth a look

Standing out is hard to do in 2012

The Beetle is still a cute and happy car, but takes itself a bit more seriously as a road-going vehicle and wouldn’t look out of place on the track. inexpensive cars includes MINI Coopers, Kia Souls, Honda CR-Zs, Nissan Jukes, and every Scion vehicle. The quality of automotive design is so high that economy cars such as the Hyundai Elantra and Ford Focus are attracting customers with previously unheard-of combinations of practicality, performance, and styling.

Luckily for Volkswagen, it had a good starting point for the redesign: the A5 platform used to great effect in the Golf, Jetta, Eos, and Tiguan, as well as the Audi A3 hatchback. With an up-to-date chassis and VW’s superb four-cylinder engines, the Beetle would be almost certain to improve upon the performance and ride quality of its predecessor. That left only the styling to question, and if you’ve seen the photos, you already know that the designers got it right.

It’s the little details that make the exterior design, from the LED lights rimming the outsides of the headlamps to the smooth curves where the broad fender panels join to the body. Throw in the black side mirrors and rear spoiler, and you have a very complete and thoughtful design.

The Beetle benefits from a nononsense interior complete with a sporty, flat-bottomed steering wheel. Unlike the futuristic designs found in many current vehicles, it favours a more traditional look, with a wide and slim dashboard and an overall feel that is well-matched to the exterior.

Performance—Power comes from a 2.5L inline-four with 170-hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, or a turbocharged 2.0L inlinefour with 200-hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. Used throughout the VW

shape, the 2012 Beetle trades in the half-moon profile for an exterior that is stronger and sportier.

It’s still a cute and happy car, but takes itself a bit more seriously as a road-going vehicle. It wouldn’t look out of place on the track, and you might even imagine it dressed up as a modern take on Disney’s Herbie—something that was hard to envision with the 1998 model.

The New Beetle was unique, and the world took notice. The Beetle may not stand out as much, but with equally compelling design and improvements across the board, it deserves just as much attention.

Design—Longer, wider and lower than the New Beetle, the Beetle gains a more planted and athletic stance. You might even call it aggressive, if not for the oval headlamps and wide, upturned lower grille that give it the slightest hint of a smiling,

Released in 1998, the New Beetle brought the fun back to Volkswagen, with a carefree attitude harkening back to the vehicle that inspired it. Standing in stark contrast to the increasingly boring vehicles of the time, the New Beetle was inspired, controversial, and—perhaps most importantly—different, serving as a form of personal expression for middle-class consumers who weren’t interested in expensive sports coupes, SUVs, and luxury sedans. The little car appealed to a wide-ranging audience, and even if you didn’t care for it personally, you appreciated that it was something different and special.

Fourteen years later, the redesigned Beetle (which Volkswagen recognizes is no longer “New”) hopes to make the same case. However, where the New Beetle won hearts on the strength of its design, enabling owners to overlook the limited space and average performance, the Beetle has a different selling point: it’s an excellent “value” car in many respects. That’s a very good thing, because the 2012 model can’t possibly have the cultural impact of its predecessor.

For the most part, the cars and trucks of 1998 were a conservative lot, reflecting consumer desires for practicality and affordability. In that environment, it was impossible for the New Beetle not to stand out. Nowadays—and thanks to the New Beetle—the list of trendy and

and Audi line-ups, both engines are well-developed and suitable for the Beetle’s needs.

Interestingly, there are four different transmissions available to the Beetle. The base 2.5L comes with either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic, while the 2.0L has a six-speed manual or Direct Shift Gearbox.

The steering system has a solid, linear feel, providing accurate road feedback and ensuring that the Beetle feels sharp and responsive at all times.

Ride quality was never great in the New Beetle, which was a little too rough and harsh, but such is not the case with the Beetle. It’s smooth, comfortable, and quiet, feeling much more refined and stable.

Environment—Aside from environmental controls that are a bit low on the dash, usability is generally very good—that extends to the optional touchscreen navigation system, which is very easy to use. However, in-cabin storage is a mixed bag, combining a two-tier glovebox with a small centre console and almost non-existent door pockets.

There’s lots of room up front, but a quick glance at the plunging rear roofline will tell you all you need to know about the cramped rear seats. The extra space appears to have gone to the much larger trunk, which also benefits from 50/50 split-folding rear seats.

An optional, 400W digital sound system includes eight speakers and a subwoofer. With every automaker offering a premium audio upgrade, the most remarkable thing about this particular one is that it’s designed by Fender, a well-known maker of guitars and amplifiers.

The panoramic sunroof is a worthwhile addition, particularly since it tilts and slides (unlike the in-place glass roofs found in some vehicles).

If that’s not enough, you’ll have to wait for the upcoming convertible version of the Beetle.

Borrowing its profile from the beloved CRX coupe sold in the ’80s and ’90s, the two-seat CR-Z won’t win any drag races, but offers affordable and fuel-efficient transportation with a sporty attitude.

• MINI Cooper: The $23,950 MINI Cooper comes with a 1.6L inline-four with 121-hp and 114 lb-ft of torque, or a turbocharged version with either 181-hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, or 208-hp and 192 lb-ft of torque. For the longest time, we’ve been limited to just the Mini Cooper and its convertible version. Now there’s a coupe and a roadster, as well as the Clubman and Countryman models.

• Scion tC—Starting at $20,940, the tC is powered by a 2.5L inline-four with 180-hp and 173 lb-ft of torque, and equipped with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. BMW Reveals New M6 Coupe and Cabriolet As far as I’m aware, our government frowns on private ownership of liquid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Not to worry, just buy a BMW M6 instead.

And here it is, the latest iteration of BMW’s blisteringly fast uber-coupe. Powered by the same 560hp, twin-turbocharged engine that you can find in the M5, this new car says goodbye to the old F1-style hollerin’ V10 in favour of a more efficient turbocharged V8.

Wait, did I just say “more efficient turbocharged V8”?

And with a straight face?

Either way, as already seen in the new M5, turbocharged teutonic titans are the wave of the future for one main reason: torque. While the outgoing car needed to be revved up, this new model puts out 500lb/ft of thrust starting at a low 1,500 rpm.

Result? Zero to 100km/h in 4.2 seconds, also partially due to the new lighter chassis. Aside from the straight-line stuff, expect all the usual BMW M trickery to make the big sedan take to the curves and shrug off the laws of physics in a manner that should have Isaac Newton eating his own hair.

Tesla Launches Model X Prototype Moving away from Sports-Panzers propelled by liquified dinosaurs for a moment, it’s the latest—ahem—electrifying concept from California-based Tesla Motors.

Resembling an Infiniti EX35 with the face of a parrotfish, the Model X has a super-cool name but is, in essence, yet another dang cute-ute cross-over. Or is it?

For one thing, the Model X runs only on electrons: it’s a full plug-in electric car. What’s more, the low-slung lithium-ion battery packs mean that you’ve got just as much room (if not more) than you would in a normal CUV: 7seater capacity and room for luggage, too.

Then there are the “falcon”-style doors that open like – well, Tesla probably wants me to say they’re like the iconic Mercedes-Benz SL300’s gullwing doors, but really they remind me of Doc Brown’s Back-to-the-Future DeLorean.

Even better, this innocuous-looking machine will run up to 100km/h in 4.4 seconds. Even better-er, you can make that sprint with a clean conscience and with plenty of friends aboard.

Aston-Martin Reunites with Bond Franchise No Mr. Bond, I expect you to drive... this classic 1964 Aston-Martin DB5. No, it doesn’t have an iPod connector.

So might the notoriously sarcastic “Q” be instructing that most destructive-of-gadgets secret agent, James Bond, for the latest in the series of movies. In Skyfall, due to be released sometime after umpteen months of trailers give all the best bits of the plot away, Jim will be back at the helm of the DB5 from Goldfinger, arguably one of the most recognizable cars in the world.

Bond fans will no doubt note that a DB5 already appeared briefly in 2006’s Casino Royale. That was just a loop around the block; this time, expect the classic Aston to dust-off the Ben-Hur axle blades and really go to battle with the baddies. mcaleeronwheels@gmail.com
