magine if B.C. Place Stadium had been built where the Bridge Studios are or near the north side of the Port Mann Bridge.

Downtown Vancouver would not be the city of today. Expo 86, Molson Indy and the 2010 Winter Olympics probably would have gone somewhere else and the clusters of office and condo towers would be shorter and thinner. Instead of SkyTrain stations downtown, railway tracks and a barrel factory might still dominate the north shore of False Creek. The Burnaby and Port Coquitlam sites were among numerous proposals former journalist and one-time federal Liberal candidate Paul Manning studied in 1980 on behalf of Premier Bill Bennett. Gordon Campbell, before running for city council, was part of the Downtown Stadium for Vancouver Association that successfully campaigned for the site east of the Cambie Bridge.

Almost 32 years later, the 1983-opened building has undergone what is arguably the most complex retrofit of any sports venue in the world and the most expensive renovation in Canadian history. It reopens for the B.C. Lions tonight and Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday afternoon. The stadium has historically relied on winter and spring trade shows and government subsidies to pay the bills, but it has paid off in other ways. It spurred a dramatic makeover of downtown Vancouver in the 1980s and 1990s and is intended to stimulate the comple-

“It’s the biggest place in B.C. for British Columbians to gather together,” Manning said.

“You have the events that happen, then you have the transit, the post-Expo development, the population of the downtown peninsula has doubled since B.C. Place.”

uch a stadium was the brainchild of Erwin Swangard, the Pacific National Exhibition president. He proposed a $163.5 million open-air Multiplex in 1978 to suc-

ceed Empire Stadium, the aging legacy of the 1954 British Empire Games.

Mayor Jack Volrich supported the Multiplex, but paying for it was the challenge. The city couldn’t afford to do it alone. When Manning pitched Bennett on the study, he told him, “The stadium’s going to end up in your lap, Empire’s dead, no municipality is going to be able to fund it, the feds aren’t going to fund it.”

Manning gauged proposals from politicians and citizens around the Lower Mainland and took a whirlwind tour of the continent’s big-

gest stadiums, including the concrete Houston Astrodome, Montreal Olympic Stadium and Seattle Kingdome. The Pontiac Silverdome near Detroit and the under-construction Metrodome in Minneapolis boasted a lightweight, inflatable roof technology using Teflon-coated fibreglass invented by New York engineer David Geiger.

Manning said facility managers advised him to build more women’s washrooms, because of changing event demographics. The new wave of indoor stadiums contained elements of convenience and comfort driven by media trends.

“One of the things we were conscious of was the competition coming from television,” he said. “In many ways you were building a theatre as much as a stadium.”

The government bought the site from Canadian Pacific Railway’s Marathon Realty for $60 million and went to work on the concrete donut that was eventually topped by a puffy, white roof when it was inflated on the second Saturday morning of November 1982.

Construction paused for Queen Elizabeth II’s March 1983 visit and Canada’s first indoor stadium—with the world’s biggest airsupported roof—opened on-time for $126 million on June 19 with a televised Sunday afternoon pageant. The first full-house was the next night when the Vancouver Whitecaps beat the Seattle Sounders 2-1.

Christmastime snowstorm in 1996 almost brought the roof down

As snow and sleet fell throughout the morning, alarms sounded at least five times but nobody activated the steam-infused roof heating system. A last-ditch, noon-hour air pressure spike caused an avalanche that tore open a panel on the west side. YouTube videos of air escaping the flapping, gashed roof at the future Olympic stadium went viral.

It was patched up and reinflated in two weeks. Engineer Kris Hamilton eventually debunked the myth of high winds attacking the roof. It was preventable.

“Successive provincial governments thought they could starve the upkeep,” Manning says. “The sta-

dium was beaten up and old. They thoughtfully dressed up where they could for the Olympics... The easy answer would have been to put another of the same roofs on it.”

By then, Campbell was six years into his Premiership and he enlisted Concert Properties president David Podmore at $1 a year to reorganize B.C. Pavilion Corporation in April 2007. They appeared together at the May 2008 renovation announcement, touting a lightweight fabric, Germany-devised retractable system reinforced by heavy steel. It would be done after the Olympics, but they kept mum on the cost.

experts estimated it would cost $253 million but be completed only two weeks before the Olympics’ Feb. 12, 2010 opening ceremony.

The all-in cost was finally disclosed at $365 million in January 2009 but ballooned to $563 million by October of that year. Podmore still insists it’s on-budget.

Crown corporation PavCo has until 2049 to repay the provincial treasury, assuming increased revenue from more events, more advertising and sponsorship and lease royalties from adjacent property. City council quashed Paragon Gaming’s controversial bid to expand Edgewater Casino, but the door remains open for a new casino and hotel complex to be attached to the stadium’s west end.

The full business case has been shrouded in cabinet secrecy and the expenditure never debated in the Legislature or put to voters, the ultimate financiers.

Some background information was eventually released in September 2010 via Freedom of Information. If there was a cost-benefit analysis or detailed site study, it could have been among the 243 censored pages of the 324 set of documents.

Without disclosing a cost estimate, a real estate appraiser frowned on the only downtown alternative for a new stadium, north of Pacific Central Station on the so-called Esperanza lands. Central Park in Burnaby and the PacificLink property in Sur-

rey were both unsuitable.

The air-supported, fabric roof technology was obsolete and deemed the biggest barrier to summertime bookings. Conversely, going roofless and moving lucrative winter trade and consumer shows to the Vancouver Convention Centre was impractical because it would displace “higher economic impact, non-resident events” that PavCo wanted at its $883.2 million Coal Harbour facility.

“Trade and consumer shows comprise the largest portion of building revenues, while sports and spectator events are the driving factors for sponsorship and food service revenues,” said the reports.

Place,” says SBP managing partner Knut Göppert.

The structure, not the foundation, was reinforced. “It remains a very efficient system with minimal bearing forces,” said Göppert, who is collaborating with Geiger Engineers, B.C. Place’s original structural engineering firm.

Continued from page 4 Major League Baseball didn’t expand to Vancouver, the original Whitecaps and North American Soccer League were gone after the 1984 season and the B.C. Lions struggled through the 1990s, after the big stadium novelty wore off. There were too many light blue seats, the acoustics were lousy and the lack of air conditioning kept fans away on hot July and August nights.

The roof was supposed to be the biggest asset, but it became a liability.

The 1996 Christmastime snowstorms nearly brought it down. Workers frantically shoveled and sprayed hot water, two days before the 3 Tenors concert on new year’s eve. In 1997, B.C. Pavilion Corporation considered converting the stadium into a twolevel facility to accommodate smaller sports crowds while hosting conventions. The $235 million estimate was too much.

Olga Ilich, the Liberal minister responsible for PavCo, insisted in May 2006 that the roof had another 15 to 20 years of life. But an internal June 2006 government report recommended a major overhaul “to bring it up to standards expected by clients and spectators at events” because the building had “worn-out assets which are critical to basic tenant operations.” The specific assets and costs were censored from the copy released to the media.

Continued from page 5 The roof is based on a hub-and-spoke system, like a giant bicycle wheel, with tension cables emanating from the hub to the outer ring, transferring the force and weight from the fabric to the cables and masts. The roof actually has three sections—a ring of glass separates the translucent fixed fabric from the gradually shaded retractable fabric.

B.C. Place’s roof will open or close in under 15 minutes, with the Gore Tex-like retractable material housed above the giant centre-hung scoreboard. It’ll remain closed in wintertime. Frankfurt’s stays open in winter, because it wasn’t built to withstand snow. It is most useful during the city’s rainy summers.

Göppert said B.C. Place’s roof will be able to carry up to 400 kilograms of snow per square metre. It won’t be melted off, but instead an inflatable roof layer will help the roof keep its shape and slough off excess snow.

“This is the first big project (in North America) we are really happy that we found a client who is interested in this technology,” Göppert said. “It’s not following the typical U.S. route with these huge, big monster structures.”

t’s a rare treat for architects to work in the same neighbourhood as a project they design. “I literally walk past this on my way home from work,” says Doug Hamming, the principal and project leader for Stantec Architecture. His firm is responsible for designing all things below the roof and is a key consultant on

the roof itself.

“Anywhere that you touch the building is something we’re involved in, it’s a phenomenal opportunity,” Hamming says.

Concession stands, washrooms, suites and lounges were redone before the Olympics. The roof was spectacularly deflated on May 6, 2010 and removed panel-by-panel. A giant temporary tower mushroomed at the centre of the building and so did cranes to carefully install the 36 steel masts imported from Thailand.

The 54-concrete columns were expanded to reinforce the structure so it could handle the weight. Earthquake dampers were installed throughout. A compression beam was built around the exterior and a tension beam inside to balance the spires, which hold the cables that support the fabric roof material. The roof system “moves around like a sea anemone” as much as two-feet for snow load or earthquakes, Hamming says.

“It’s as if we took Lions Gate Bridge out of the ground and suspended it in the air, 75 feet in the air.”

It hasn’t been easy. There were delays in 2008 and 2009 while the schedule, design and cost were reconsidered. Once it got the green light, customs red tape, time zones and cultural differences became challenges. For instance, cable strands started in Japan were sent to Europe for completion. Some components, including Volkswagen-sized connectors, were flawed at source or damaged in shipping and had to be repaired upon arrival or returned for replacement. Contractors were embedded in the source countries

to monitor progress of components and materials and warn of any delays.

Structal, a division of Quebec-based steel supplier Canam Group, told shareholders in April it was stuck with a $25 million cost overrun because of the late erection of roof-support cables by French subcontractor Freyssinet. Structal was hired on a $100 million fixed-price contract to supply and instal steel for columns, compression beams, catwalks, arches and facades.

Some 5,000 construction workers came through during the life of the project and schedules were juggled while application of the roof material was delayed from winter to summer.

In the final days, Hamming’s group is working hand-in-hand with PavCo on safety exercises and system tests, “hardware by hardware, door by door,” Hamming says, to gain the necessary permits and certificates.

“Some things won’t be ready, but the building will be ready. Somebody who’s been familiar with the project and has a keen eye, it’s like where’s Waldo maybe, they might find a few things that should be working that aren’t,” Hamming says.

The building has new red and grey seats, including rows closer to the action, an improved sound system and a giant centre-hung, shoebox-style scoreboard.

news general were part of a broader provincial approach to local government finance—putting it on a footing more similar to that of the other levels of government—then the position would make more sense, Buholzer continued. “As matters stand, however, establishing a largely redundant office to examine expenditures that are already under the discipline of pay-as-you-go financing may be a purely symbolic gesture,” he added.

Auditor general talk

To have or not to have a municipal auditor general?

That was a question that got many civic politicians grumbling this week as they gathered at the Pan Pacific Hotel and Vancouver Convention Centre for the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities gathering.

Some want it, some think it’s a bad idea.

Ida Chong, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, is leading the provincial government’s charge to set up—and fully fund—an Office of the Municipal Auditor General for British Columbia.

“While the details are still being developed, we know that the municipal auditor general will conduct a limited number of value-for-money performance audits every year,” Chong wrote in a statement prior to this week’s convention. “The purpose of performance audits is to help local governments in their stewardship of community assets, to identify best practices and to provide another measure of transparency and accountability for taxpayers.”

Translation: An auditor general will not be spending every waking

private audit firms are familiar with municipal finances, that municipalities are not allowed to run deficits and that councils have power to appoint independent committees to investigate municipal spending.

“Such committees could even be used to make recommendations to the council on the most cost effective way to carry out a proposed program or project before any expenditures are made,” he wrote.

If the establishment of an auditor

The Supreme Court of Canada is expected to announce Friday its ruling on the future of the Insite supervised drug injection site, which has been the subject of a legal battle with the feds.

Insite, the only legal injection site in North America, opened in September 2003 as a three-year scientific trial. It has remained opened indefinitely because of a provincial court ruling that exempted Insite from the country’s drug laws.

Whichever way the Supreme Court ruling goes, you can be sure the topic of injection sites will again make its way into the civic election campaign.

As I recall, Gregor Robertson said during his 2008 campaign for mayor that he wanted to see more than one injection site in the city. I’m not sure what his NPA rival, Suzanne Anton, thinks about this.

Michelle Fortin knew immediately that the very idea of housing at-risk young women in the Downtown Eastside would, to use her word, be “incendiary.” But that didn’t stop the executive director of Watari Youth Community and Family Services from approaching Janice Abbott with the idea. Abbott runs Atira, the organization that, among other things, builds and operates non-profit housing for women in that neighbourhood. Fortin wanted Abbott to find a space for those hard-to-house young women and Fortin’s staff would oversee their care.

Fortin says her volunteer board was prepared for the worst: “My board is ready for the shit to hit the fan. But this is a population that needs our attention.” From that deal with Abbott, and with the approval of city council, a project called Imouto Housing for Young Women was developed right in the bowels of the area at 120 Jackson. It’s designed to house 18 women between the ages of 16 and 24.

The money to buy the property was originally lent by Vancity Credit Union. (For full disclosure, while Vancity is no longer involved in the project, I am on the Vancity board.) Vancity was replaced as a lender by B.C. Housing and that created another controversy. Abbott happens to be married to Shayne Ramsay, B.C. Housing’s CEO. And even though Ramsay signed a letter at the time the deal went through creating an information wall between himself and Abbott, some still see a conflict.

Then, as regular readers of the Courier know, there was the reaction from a number of voices in the neighborhood outraged at the

allengarr idea that these young and vulnerable women would be housed in a neighbourhood riddled with pimps and drug dealers. “Why weren’t we consulted before the city approved this?”

How could this happen?

First let’s look at who these young women are. The project is exclusively targeting women who already live in the area. “These are not young women who ran away from home because their daddy told them they couldn’t go to the Saturday dance,” Abbott says. They are women who “have had traumatic lives and probably fled from predators where ever they came from.” They likely have been sexually exploited and suffer from substance abuse.

And, what was demonstrated in the most recent homeless count, while other groups of homeless appear to be declining in numbers, this cohort is growing.

A couple of more points: These women are

too damaged to be accepted in higher barrier shelters such as Covenant House. And while there are undoubtedly predators in this neighbourhood, the Downtown Eastside is where these young women feel most welcome. Besides, most of them have achieved the age of majority and can live wherever they want.

If that’s the case, then who is supporting this project? Well you may be surprised.

The funding is coming from the Vancouver Foundation, the largest charitable foundation in this neck of the woods and not one with a reputation for being either reckless with its money or radical.

There is an advisory group that monitors the project, which includes the Vancouver police, social workers, B.C. Women’s Hospital, Sheway (the health and social services agency for women) and the Aboriginal Child and Family Services Society.

Finally there is this question: Will it work?

As counterintuitive as it may seem, what we have seen with lower barrier shelters and projects like Insite is that, for people in these desperate straights, the first step is to get them inside and connected once again.

At Imouto these young women will be far safer than pursuing their precarious existences on the street. Some will move on to rehabilitation centres, some may eventually be re-united with their families and some will inevitably fail and fall back. But as Michelle Fortin says, this is a population that needs our attention.

opinion PROTESTERS CALL FOR RULE OF LAW

Revolution underway at Occupy Wall Street Culturally, politically and artistically, Vancouver doesn’t have great influence on the East Coast. We like to think of ourselves as being on the cutting edge of Pacific Rim cool, but for the most part our province is a damp dominion of woodhewing, land-flipping and potsmoking. When it comes to progressive movements and creative initiatives, we leave the heavy lifting to others.

The direction of influence was reversed a bit this month when the Vancouver-published magazine Adbusters kicked off a campaign to “Occupy Wall Street.” The idea was to turn New York’s financial district into North America’s Tahrir Square, starting Sept. 17. The tag line of the protest, “We Are the Ninetynine Per Cent,” refers to the Americans who don’t belong to the one per cent of the population that control 42 per cent of all privately held wealth.

There were an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 protesters on the first day, with the numbers hovering in the hundreds thereafter. Small protests in solidarity with the Wall Street occupation have spread across to other U.S. cities, including Chicago and Denver. Although revolution seems highly unlikely south of the border, similar modest turnouts prefaced the mass uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt. What plutocrats everywhere fear is a real “black swan event” originating in people power.

On my trip last week to New York, timed serendipitously with the protests, I discovered Wall Street is a surprisingly short stretch, just a few blocks long.

It literally ends with buried bodies. Trinity Church, visible as a gothic spire down the canyon of marble and glass, is bracketed by a graveyard containing the remains of past financial giants including first secretary of the treasury, Alexander Hamilton.

Manhattan’s yellow brick road has the feel of past glories and ancient superstitions. That’s fitting, considering that the hightech Ponzi schemes that robbed nearly a million Americans of their homes were about as far removed from the working world as medieval theology. Needless to say, there has been no jail time for the perps, just a $10trillion bailout and a mainstream press still singing from the hymn book of fat cat capitalism.

By Sept. 18, hundreds of protesters were camped out in Liberty Plaza. I asked two young men holding placards at the edge of the plaza what inspired them to attend the protest. “Its very personal for me, actually,” said Greg, from Hartford, Conn. He did not dis-

“Obama is a puppet, it wouldn’t matter if it’s him or John McCain, he’s got so many hands up his butt,” Greg added. Both protesters believe nonviolent resistance is one of the few democratic options left in the U.S. “Every single one of us has to be put up with getting arrested. We can’t be scared of that.” They displayed their forearms, with phone numbers written in marker for the National Lawyers Guild.

Over the next few days, the activists penetrated Wall Street, engaged in street theatre, and posted their updates to the Internet. The demonstrations put Mayor Bloomberg in something of a bind. With the UN General Assembly in process, he couldn’t risk coming off like a miniMubarek through a police crackdown. But as the floor manager for hypercapitalism’s chop shop, he wasn’t about to allow the protest to persist indefinitely, and risk losing control of Manhattan’s barricaded streets.

The first police assaults began Sept. 24. You can find videos online of NYPD dragging women in the streets and macing other peacefully demonstrating females in the face. True to form, for a week the national press in both the U.S. and Canada succeeded in sweeping images and information from Occupy Wall Street under the carpet.

“This is where the hope of America lies,” said former New York Times war correspondent Chris Hedges from Liberty Plaza, in video posted to YouTube. “The protesters are conservatives in this sense, they call for the rule of law. The real radicals… are the rapacious oligarchic class.”

The vast majority of Canadians are doing their part to help save the planet by recycling, improving the insulation in their homes, upgrading their appliances to more efficient ones, walking, cycling, using public transit and by making many other changes to their routines. Thousands of scientists from around the world have been warning us for several years now that this planet is in trouble. The evidence is there. If we don’t change our ways soon, this planet will become a hell on Earth. That is not fear mongering, Mr.

Penner, that is the truth.

To the editor: Linc Penner proudly boasts he throws away bottles, tins and paper with regular garbage in the same bag. Possibly Mr. Penner could tell us where “away” is and at the same time write us a cheque for the real estate his waste is occupying. Imouto House helps girls escape violence We want To the editor: Re: “Teenage housing nightmare opens for business,” Sept. 19.

Anti-violence advocates working in transition houses across the province, particularly those from rural and remote communities, caution us to examine our urban-centric notions and assumptions about their communities and conditions for women and girls who live in them. They tell us that it is every bit as difficult for girls and women in their communities where

there is plenty of violence and risk, but proportionately fewer resources and alternatives.

When girls end up in the Downtown Eastside, it’s because they are escaping violence in their communities and the lack of resources and alternatives for their safety.

Atira’s Imouto House will temporarily provide housing and support to young women who are homeless and currently living in the area.

Unfortunately, Mark Hasiuk’s inflammatory remarks and accusations only serve

to further conflicts between activists who share the goal to eliminate violence against women if not the methods to do so. Worse still, his journalistic style diverts attention away from systemic causes and, sadly, from those who have both the ability and responsibility to end violence against women and girls: violent men and democratically elected officials.

Aging centres want money

In the Sept. 28 edition of the Courier I wrote in this column that members of the Kerrisdale Community Centre’s Facilities Renewal Committee aren’t happy no money is included in the 2012-2014 capital plan to replace that community’s aging centre, ice rink and pool.

I included comments from committee chair Chris Heath and Vision Vancouver park board chair Aaron Jasper, but didn’t have room to include any of the conversation I had with NPA commissioner Ian Robertson. He was quick to point out Kerrisdale is not the only community centre in desperate need of renewal. He says the West Point Grey Community Centre is in worse shape and lacks accessibility for people with wheelchairs and mothers with strollers.

“But whether Kerrisdale deserves it more or not is not in keeping with the big picture,” says Robertson. “The bigger challenge is that Vision Vancouver is not keeping up with community centre renewal.”

Robertson says Vancouver is fortunate to have 23 community centres, which often act as a source of support and recreation for many residents, including new immigrants and renters.

“The community centre is often the first place they go. They’re vital to a community.”

He adds Vision should rethink its priorities when it comes to spending. Robertson notes many of the city’s community centres were built in the 1950s and 1960s and need to be revitalized now. He wants enough funds to replace two community centres included in each capital plan moving forward. “It’s a huge issue that hasn’t been addressed by Vision Vancouver,” says Robertson. “It comes down to priorities and they’ve been putting other things ahead of community centre renewal.”

Robertson says money for community centre replacement could come from a number of sources. One example is $3.5 million needed for the West Point Grey renewal, not included in the capital plan. “But Vision Vancouver voted to spend $3.2 million for 9,800 new boulevard trees,” says Robertson, who is not running for re-election in the November municipal elec-

Locally, pickles can be dropped off at the Trout Lake Farmers Market this Saturday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Pickles will be judged Oct. 3 by a panel of “pickle experts” made up of food writers and chefs. The top eight pickles will move to the semi-final, which takes place Oct. 15 at the Trout Lake Farmers Market.

McNeill said this will likely be the first of many Modern Green projects in B.C. “This is a large Chinese group that was looking at where they wanted to continue to grow and develop their company and they chose Vancouver as a safe, growing city that was friendly to the developer and has a market they were comfortable to operate in,” said McNeil. “They don’t have anything that I can speak of openly yet, but they have their fingers in several other sites in the future.”

The development is expected to be ready to move into by the end of 2012, and asking prices start at $449,900.

Units at a new UBC residential complex called Yu designed to appeal to immigrant Chinese buyers who have both a green streak and deep pockets will be up for sale for the first time Saturday, Cameron McNeill, president of MAC Marketing Solutions, said he expects sales of the 106 sustainably designed, luxury condos and townhouses will be brisk.

“At the risk of sounding too sales-y, the UBC market is a fairly unique market,” said McNeill. “A main attraction is all the natural amenities, but also the schools. That is important for all cultures, but the Chinese culture puts a particularly high value on that. There are a lot of Chinese immigrants living here and they seem to resonate well with Chinese developers who are trying to buy in locations that appeal to that consumer group.”

The name Yu itself means “jade” in Chinese and the green gemstone is considered precious in Chinese culture. However, the new homes on the Wesbrook Village block won’t be green in name only.

The housing complex is the first Canadian construction project by one of China’s largest property developers, Modern Green, a company that has developed more than 10 million square feet of green buildings in China and Australia using geothermal heating, energy-saving technologies and other sustainable building techniques. Last February, it donated $3.5 million to advance green building research

by UBC’s Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability.

Built to conform to the principals of Feng shui as well as stringent REAP (Residential Environmental Assessment Program) gold standards, Yu was designed by Perkins and Will, an international firm whose other local projects include the Canada Line SkyTrain stations, the District of North Vancouver municipal hall and SFU’s Blusson Hall.

The innovative building, located on the university’s south campus, will also feature a 5,000 square foot “living laboratory” and demonstration centre to showcase the most recent technologies in sustainable design.

Mother of twins now helps new moms

Breastfeeding challenge hopes to set Guinness record Sandra Thomas Staff writer

Commercial Drive resident Catherine Zaborowska knows a thing or two about breastfeeding.

The young mother has literally had her hands full learning the techniques of breast-feeding since giving birth to twin boys five months ago.

“They were premature so I was lucky to have enough milk for both,” said Zaborowska, who is hoping to take part in the 2011 Breastfeeding Challenge at the Creekside Community Centre in False Creek Saturday, Oct. 1.

Vancouver Coastal Health, which organized the Vancouver challenge, is encouraging nursing mothers to attend in hopes of helping set a new Guinness World Record for most babies breastfed at the same time.

The Breastfeeding Challenge is an international initiative organized by the

Vancouver-based Quintessence Foundation, which launched the event in 2001.

Quintessence is a foundation established in 1998 with a focus on breastfeeding and milk bank education. Similar breast-feeding challenge events will be held around the world Oct. 1.

Zaborowska said breastfeeding two babies has presented its own challenges, but she was able to overcome problems with the help of the doula who offered advice during her pregnancy, the lactation consultant she met with at the hospital after giving birth and through the parents and babies program she attends weekly at the Robert and Lilly Lee Family Health Care Centre, a Vancouver Coastal Health Facility on East Broadway.

“I was lucky and had lots of support and information,” said Zaborowska, who admits breastfeeding two babies can be an ex-

hausting task. “But it still takes a lot of time on the couch.”

Zaborowska’s ease with breastfeeding has helped her support newer mothers who attend the dropin group. She also supports mothers who want to breastfeed in public without being asked to hide.

“Breastfeeding is a natural thing and I bet all of the people who are bothered by

it were breastfed,” said Zaborowska. “You shouldn’t be forced to hide, but on the other hand I never make an exhibition of it so I breastfeed anywhere I need to.”

Leslie Mills, with Vancouver Coastal Health, agrees breastfeeding can be a challenge for some mothers. To help them out, the health authority is seeking a “breastfeeding friendly” designation before 2015

from the Breastfeeding Committee of Canada. That entails, in part, ensuring all staff are educated to support breastfeeding mothers and all facilities are receptive to breastfeeding.

Mills hopes to see more breastfeeding mothers and babies at this year’s challenge than the 50 who participated last year.

Molson brewery staying put Bob Mackin Contributing writer The last major factory in the City of Vancouver and only Molson Coors brewery west of Ontario will remain a cornerstone of Canadian operations, according to a company director and great-great-great-great grandson of founder John Molson.

“It supplies the west and we need it,” Geoff Molson told the Courier on Wednesday. “It’s a good, strong performing brewery. We’re investing in this brewery to make it even stronger.

Regardless of the value of the real estate underneath us, it’s a brewery we consider important for our current network.” The brewery at the southeast corner of the Burrard Bridge was built in 1953 by Seattle brewing tycoon Emil Sick.

In 1958, the Montreal-based Molson company, founded in 1786, expanded westward with the purchase of Sick’s Canadian operations.

Molson Coors, the product of a 2005 merger with Denver-based Coors, which was founded in 1873, expanded its Vancouver holdings again two years ago when subsidiary Creemore Springs bought Granville Island Brewing from Andrew Peller Ltd. “The west has a particular interest in local microbrews and for us that’s an interesting opportunity, hence Granville for us,” Molson said. “We’re seeing them pop up all over Canada.”

Last spring, Molson launched the Six Pints Specialty Beer Company—a reference to the daily beer ration for British soldiers stationed

overseas in the late 18th century—to further compete amid the heavily fragmented beer market. “People are not afraid to try new things, they’re curious to sample new tastes and new flavours and brand names,” Molson said. “The consumer in the past had two or three brands in their personal portfolio, now they would have six or seven brands, depending on the occasion.”

Molson and brother Andrew, the new chairman of Molson Coors, began a cross-Canada tour in Vancouver Tuesday to celebrate the 225th anniversary of North America’s oldest brewery. The 40-year-old returned the Montreal Canadiens to the Molson family in 2009 when financially troubled American George Gillett was forced to sell after eight years. Great-uncle Hartland Molson bought the Habs in 1957.

Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final June 15 was the last Molson Coors-supplied hockey game at Rogers Arena, which has since switched to global rival AB InBev. June 15 was also the night of Vancouver’s Stanley Cup riot, which was fuelled by alcohol consumption and binge drinking according to John Furlong and Doug Keefe’s report to the provincial government.

“I wasn’t present to witness it. I saw pictures on YouTube and the Internet, it certainly is something that is very unfortunate that happened,” Molson said. “There are probably many reasons why it happened and no one will have any specific explanation... but responsible drinking is something that we take very seriously.”

NPA mayoral candidate Suzanne Anton is promising to cut taxes by rolling $7.5 million of the city’s capital and operating budget surpluses into savings for taxpayers.

Anton, who is her party’s lone city councillor, based the $7.5 million surplus figure on a city staff report that went before council last week.

The report actually predicts a $1.1 million surplus for the 2011 operating budget and a further $6.6 million from the capital budget.

“If we are elected, the NPA will return year-end budget surpluses directly back to taxpayers,” said Anton at a press conference in a plaza at Hastings and Hornby Tuesday. “When city hall takes your tax dollar and doesn’t need or use it by the end of the year, that money should go back to you. In other words, if you give me $10 for something and it only costs $9, that dollar should come back to you.”

Raymond Louie, who is chairperson of the city’s finance committee, said the report is not a final calculation of surpluses for 2011 and it could be a lot less when finalized.

“If she would have read the report, she would have seen in the report that expenditures fluctuate significantly through the year, depending on project implementation,” Louie said.

“A lot of projects will come in the latter half of the year,

and when reported out in 2012 for the year-end of 2011, you’ll see that the variances won’t have been as great as they are.”

Louie called Anton’s promise to return savings to taxpayers a “flip-flop” on a vote she cast July 24, 2007 under the previous NPAdominated council, which included Anton and Louie.

At the time, Louie moved a motion that council return $11.8 million of savings from the civic strike to taxpayers. The return would have equalled a 2.3 per cent tax reduction. Anton and then-NPA councillor Elizabeth Ball, who is seeking election Nov. 19, voted against Louie’s motion.

“She had an opportunity to actually charge our citizens less money for services that weren’t actually provided,” Louie said.

In an interview following Tuesday’s press conference, Anton said her vote in 2007 occurred under “different economic times” and that city staff “were not confident” the $11.8 million was “a genuine savings.” “[City staff] were unsure whether it really was a savings and certainly in the budget the following year, the budget had to go up quite a bit higher to cover the money that wasn’t collected at that point and the money that was returned,” she said. “So that was the reason for it.”

Anton also promised to continue the property tax shift, which sees homeowners share more of the tax burden to lessen the tax on business owners. Mayor Gregor Robertson, who is seeking reelection, campaigned in 2008 on promoting the tax shift.

Anton said she will announce “additional prosperity measures” in the coming weeks.

If the NPA wins a majority on city council in the November civic election, the party will not order city crews to rip up the so-called temporary separated bike lane that runs along Hornby Street from Pacific to Hastings.

NPA mayoral candidate Suzanne Anton, who is the party’s lone councillor, made the promise Tuesday after making an unrelated campaign announcement at the foot of the Hornby Street lane at Hastings. “I don’t want to tear out a $3 million piece of infrastructure, if I don’t have to,” Anton told the Courier.

“That’s why I’m determined to look at what the problems are and see if those problems can be addressed.”

Anton said she wants to “fix the things that drive people crazy” about the lane, including improving the flow of vehicles currently cut off by several no-right turn signs along one of downtown’s major traffic arteries.

The bike lane, which is lined with protective barriers such as planters and bike racks, opened to cyclists in December 2010. The city insists the $3.2 million lane was installed on a trial basis, as were separated lanes on the Dunsmuir viaduct, Dunsmuir Street and Burrard Bridge.

Council unanimously approved the Hornby lane, only to have Anton say the next day she regretted her vote because of the speed in which city crews began construction.

At the time, Vision Vancouver Coun. Geoff Meggs called Anton’s sudden reversal the “fastest flip-flop in the history of city council.”

“It was a sham process,” said Anton, claiming that previous NPA administrations were responsible for adding up to 400 kilometres of nonprotected lanes across the city without any controversy.

“Gregor Robertson puts in one bike lane and he sets up this angry dynamic between bikes and cars which has just been disastrous for bike facilities.”

A city-commissioned study released in July on impacts to businesses along Hornby and Dunsmuir streets from the bike lane concluded researchers weren’t able to provide deeper analysis on the topic because of business owners’ unwillingness to cooperate.

Of 225 street-level businesses surveyed along the routes and neighbouring streets, 73 responded. Of 15 businesses claiming “greater impacts” because of the lanes, only four responded. And 34 com-

mercial property owners or managers participated out of a possible 114.

Those business operators who responded believed they sustained a combined sales loss of $2.4 million because of the lanes. If the estimated loss of $2.4 million is accurate, the study’s authors described the downturn as “moderate”

and that loss is expected to decrease over time. “This is relatively moderate based on industry standards and, in general, insufficient to create persistent vacancies,” said the study, which was overseen by the Vancouver Economic Development Commission. “The downtown is and will remain vibrant and the moderate neg-

ative impact of the lanes will diminish over time as mitigation strategies take effect.”

When retired lawyer Nadine McDonnell had her locked bicycle stolen from a Vancouver street recently, she explored all the usual avenues in the hope of recovering it. She filed a police report, checked out Craigslist and visited a variety of used bike stores and pawn shops.

But nobody ever told her it might have been taken by the City of Vancouver.

McDonnell only found out about the city’s practice of confiscating bikes after coming across a worker using an angle grinder to saw through the U-lock of an expensivelooking bike attached to a bike path sign Sept. 22 at the intersection of Ontario Street and 22nd Avenue.

“I asked the worker why and he said that it was not permissible to attach bikes to city property and that there had been three complaints,” McDonnell said. “He also said that he was not able to tell me who complained and added that he removed around three bikes a day.”

Chris Dodd, a superintendent at the city’s streets operations branch, said the number of bikes taken by the city is closer to 10 or 15 per year rather than per week, as the staff member allegedly claimed.

“We’re not in the bike collection business,” said Dodd. “The way it works is it is a complaint-based service. Typically, what happens is that any bike we would touch would be a bike that has no wheels left on it or rusted out or we know has been there for several weeks because we’ve had several complaints about it. So long as it isn’t a safety concern or

causing pedestrians to not be able to access the sidewalks or ramps, we typically don’t touch it.”

While McDonnell accepts that the employee may have inflated the number after being confronted by an irate former union lawyer, she said the actual number of bikes taken isn’t the main issue.

“How do we actually know they’re not stealing

bikes? The city is sending out their workers to do this without any safeguards to ensure they won’t be accused themselves of theft.

That is a major concern and those are issues that can only be addressed by council. The whole thing is so flawed they should stop immediately.”

She also worries that bikes being taken might not be the ones that were the subject of the complaints.

“Say I park my bike and the city worker comes along and says, ‘Oh there was a complaint last week about some bike parked along here.’ That bike is now gone, my bike is there, they take my bike and don’t leave anything to let me know where it is, and I just assume it is stolen.”

Dodd said staff use their judgment before removing a bike. “We wouldn’t just react and cut the lock off. Our foreman has some discretion, too. If he gets a complaint and something doesn’t seem too right there, he won’t immediately act on it. We’ll get back in touch with the person that complained to discuss the situation and try to get to the bottom of it.”

Ball-Arnaz Center honours girl who conquered Hollywood

Museum shows hometown still loves Lucy Mitchell Smyth

Contributing writer JAMESTOWN, New York— “Vitameatavegamin.” The word brings an instant smile to people of a certain age, the people who grew up with I Love Lucy on television, either in first-run or in the endless repeats. They smile again when they reach the Vitameatavegamin table in the museum here in star Lucille Ball’s hometown, an hour’s drive southwest of Buffalo.

They remember the famous episode in the long-running sitcom, where Lucy tries to make a commercial for the titular tonic, not realizing that it contains alcohol, and gets more soused by the minute.

Visitors are encouraged to “remake” the commercial, aided by a teleprompter.

Yes, Jamestown loves Lucy, the girl from Stewart Avenue who conquered Hollywood and the hearts of TV viewers with her shows—variously called I Love Lucy, The LucyDesi Comedy Hour, The Lucy Show and Here’s Lucy—from 1951 to 1974. “They’re still

being screened in reruns, somewhere in the world, every day, dubbed into something like 20 languages,’’ a guide tells visitors.

The museum is called the Ball-Arnaz Center. (Desi Arnaz was Ball’s husband and her co-star in I Love Lucy.

They later divorced.) It has three components. The main one is the Desilu Playhouse, which is devoted to the various television series. Included are costumes, memorabilia, exact replicas of a couple of the sets and, of course, the Vitameatavegamin table.

The second component is the Lucy-Desi Museum, which covers the personal lives of the couple and reminds us that Lucille Ball was anything but the scatter-brained redhead she played on screen. In fact, she was a shrewd businesswoman, the first woman to head a major Hollywood studio (Desilu). Visitors learn how Ball, from an Irish-Scottish-French family, left Jamestown at 15 to make it in show business. It was a long haul: the Broadway chorus line, Chester-

field cigarette advertisements, and 68 B-movies before she became a radio star with My Favorite Husband. This came to TV in 1951 as I Love Lucy.

Exhibits on bandleader and actor Arnaz tell how he and his family fled Cuba when Fulgensio Batista seized

power in 1934, and how he and Lucy met and fell in love on the set of the movie Too Many Girls in 1940. They wed the next year; the marriage lasted until 1960.

And finally, the Lucy-Desi Gift Shop is everything you’d expect, crammed with every conceivable Bell-Arnaz doo-

dad: faux Vitameatavegamin tonic bottles, a dozen biographies and picture books, DVDs, magnets, T-shirts, shot glasses, board games.

Every year, on the first weekend in August, Jamestown stages the Lucy Birthday Celebration. (She was born Aug. 6, 1911 so this year’s

event—2011—was a special centenary bash.) There were parades, street performances, trivia contests, movie screenings and much more.

kudos & kvetches Lingering Sting

Rock superstar Sting is known for a lot of things: frontman of The Police, successful solo artist, occasional actor, setting people he loves free… free, free, set them free.

But somewhere along the way, he also gained a reputation for being a practitioner of tantric sex. He’s denied it in interviews, but like that pesky urban myth about Rod Stewart getting his stomach pumped and Stevie Nicks ingesting cocaine through her nether regions, the rumour of Sting’s sexual stamina refuses to subside. It just keeps lasting… and lasting… and lasting.

So it’s only fitting that the musician’s upcoming date with Vancouver on Dec. 8, as part of his “back to bass” tour, has been extended not one, but two times. As of now, Sting is slated to play three evenings in a row at Queen Elizabeth Theatre. His Dec. 8 show is sold out. There are a limited number of tickets available for his Dec. 9 rendezvous. And he’s just added a third date Dec. 10. When you add it up, Sting could have easily played a single concert at a larger venue, such as Rogers

Arena. But you know something? That’s not the way Sting rolls. Instead of one short, quick blast of pleasure, he likes to take his time, spread out his talents over the course of several sensual evenings.

Who knows, maybe he’s got a fourth concert in him. Four nights of Sting. That might be a record. Something tells us we might need to buy more incense and candles.

In a few days the National Hockey League’s 2011-2012 season will get underway, and already it’s sizing up to be an ugly one.

In the past week alone there have been several suspensions due to players trying to decapitate one another with vicious hits to the head and a particularly nasty incident where a spectator at an exhibition game held in London, Ont. between the Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings threw a banana on the ice when Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds took part in a shootout. Oh yeah, Simmonds happens to be black.

the banana says his client was only tr ying to prevent his favourite team from getting scored on and he was unaware that throwing a banana at a black person could be construed as racist. As to why he brought a banana to the hockey rink in the first place is unknown—we’re assuming he didn’t buy it at the game since it probably would have cost him $8. But his excuse that he didn’t know that throwing a banana at a black player had racial overtones is almost as dumb as his actions.

And just to put a bow on things, Simmonds was later involved in another controversial altercation during a game against the New York Rangers, where he allegedly called Rangers forward and professional pest Sean Avery a homophobic slur. The league has since said Simmonds will not be punished for the offensive comment.

So there you have it. Undisciplined violence, suspensions, racist fans, homophobic players.

And it’s still only pre-season. Looks like another stellar NHL season awaits. Now, what to wear to the next riot?

Andrew Bird: Fever Year

Oct. 8, 10 and 14 at Vancity Theatre Whether he’s touring, recording or whistling in his garden during some rare downtime, enigmatic singer-songwriter Andrew Bird works at a feverish pace.

Literally. For most of Xan Aranda’s yearin-the-life documentary, a constantly damp-haired Bird sweats, coughs and shivers through an unbreakable fever that has him wondering if he might be evolving into a different kind of animal. The dreamy haze that Bird floats through, no doubt brought on by his 150-plusconcerts-a-year pace, further inspires his hard-to-pin-down music, which is often based around layers of intricate violin loops, bird-like whistling and soaring melodies. And while Bird proves a poetic and articulate figure, the performances captured in Fever Year are the real treat, particularly an impromptu collaboration with musical peer St. Vincent.

Relying primarily on old footage and talking head interviews, Michael Radford’s entertaining doc keeps it simple so as to not get in the way of his compelling subject whose larger than life persona and tumultuous affairs made him the centre of attention whether at a dinner party or on a concert stage.

In the early ’70s, British cult musician Genesis P-Orridge found kindred spirits in William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin, whose cut-up tech-

By the mid-’70s, P’Orridge met and married New York dominatrix Jacqueline “Lady Jaye” Breyer, and the two of them embarked on an art project they dubbed “Pandrogeny,” in which they surgically altered themselves to reflect the notion they inhabited the same spirit and body. At times overly arty, other times romantic and heartbreaking, Marie Losier’s fascinating documentary, like its subject, is anything but conventional.

The Family Jams

ited by modern day flower children Devendra Banhart, pixie-voiced harpist Joanna Newsom and more downto-earth acoustic act Vetiver? How about other people’s home movies and vacation photos where the action and seemingly inconsequential conversations are of the “you had to be there” variety? Then The Family Jams is for you. Shot over the course of a ramshackle, DIY tour across the U.S. in 2004, Kevin Barker’s film is an interesting time capsule capturing a musical movement in its infancy and a number of indie performers whose stars would rise beyond the tiny clubs, community centres and tofu-friendly cafes the tour film visits.

But the movie’s lack of focus, drama and articulateness, not to mention a self-congratulatory streak by some of those involved, makes this one for diehard fans only.

Family secrets and dysfunction rule True Love Lies

Not everything rings true in Fraser play True Love Lies

When a zipper goes south in a Brad Fraser play, you can be sure you’re going to see some bare butt and simulated sex. True Love Lies is no exception.

Live, onstage, simulated sex is not my thing, but there’s only one such scene in True Love Lies and it’s pivotal to the plot. It’s also critical to see the aftermath: no sweet after-good-sex cuddling but a hurried, embarrassed zipping up after guilt-producing sex.

Fraser takes gay men Kane (Greg Armstrong-Morris) and David (Andrew McIlroy), a couple of characters from his earlier Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love, and shows them a couple decades later.

Kane is now married to Carolyn (Katharine Venour) and has two kids—high school-aged Royce (Anton Lipovetsky and sexually promiscuous Madison (Lara Gilchrist) who’s 20 and looking for work. What Kane and Carolyn have kept from the kids is that Kane was sexually and emotionally involved with David for several years before they were married.

When Madison answers an ad for a waitressing job, she meets restaurant owner David, recently back from a long time in New York, and she starts to connect the dots.

What doesn’t ring true in this Touchstone Theatre production is, given that Madison and Royce are two savvy kids, they haven’t suspected or figured out Dad might be—or might have been—homosexual. Under Katrina Dunn’s direction, Armstrong-Morris’s Kane is not just creative, artistic, funny and articulate, he really seems gay. So what’s the big surprise when the kids find out? The artificially growly, sex-kitten stuff that goes on between 20year married Kane and Carolyn doesn’t help, either. No wonder the kids are confused.

Like Unidentified Human Remains, True

Katharine Venour and Greg Armstrong Morris appear in True Love Lies.

Love Lies is a collection of short scenes. Many, if not most, happen during meals so the actors are constantly whisking dishes onto the table and shortly thereafter, whisking them off. So fragmented are these scenes, we never get to know the characters. Why, for example, does bright and gorgeous Madison want, in her words, to “f--k” every guy she meets? Why is Royce, smart and charming, being bullied at school? And why haven’t Carolyn and David—seemingly intelligent, caring parents— noticed that their kids are troubled? If Royce knows his sister dresses like a slut because she is a slut, why don’t her parents know?

Venour finds Carolyn’s chic brittleness that, over the course of the play, becomes confusion and anger. Initially I found McIlroy’s performance mannered and I had difficulty imagining David and Kane as lovers. But the playwright crafts David so lovingly and McIlroy is so deeply committed to the character that, eventually, I was a believer. David’s showdown with Royce is so generous that it made True Love Lies worth investing in.

Studio 58 grads both, Gilchrist and Lipovetsky’s performances are honest and real; Gilchrist really nails down her character’s youthful confidence and flippancy. But the dearest character Fraser gives us is Royce. Lipovetsky is so sweet, funny, fragile and vulnerable, you’re happy for him when he finds the girl of his outside-the-envelope dreams.

Buddy movie 50/50 wisely keeps it low key

Prognosis for cancer comedy quite good 50/50

No one should get cancer. But we especially hate it when young people get it. And it seems particularly cruel when cancer hits one of the good guys.

Twenty-seven-year-old Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is one of the good guys. He waits for the light when he’s jogging, even when there’s no traffic. He suffers through the hysterics of his inconsiderate girlfriend (Bryce Dallas Howard), and his worst sin is waiting too long before calling his mom. “I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I recycle,” Adam protests, when he gets the diagnosis from the world’s most inconsiderate doctor.

“Have you ever seen Terms of Endearment?” is how Adam chooses to break the news to his mom (Anjelica Huston), who is already taking care of Kyle’s dad, suffering from Alzheimer’s. Mom wants to move in, but Adam is determined to deal with it on his own.

He’s not exactly alone. Adam’s best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) is there to provide as much moral support as he is capable of.

So Kyle occasionally uses Adam’s cancer to pick up girls, and feels more than justified in getting a prescription for medicinal marijuana (it’s for him, not for Adam). Kyle provides the lion’s share of the comic relief in a

Adam starts chemo, and makes new friends (Philip Baker Hall and Matt Frewer). Introductions are made: names first, diagnosis second. “The more syllables, the worse it is,” says Baker Hall before offering a pot-laden macaroon.

Adam is referred to a psychiatrist, Dr. McKay (Anna Kendrick), who isn’t even out of school. Adam is sceptical, amused, and occasionally angered by her tactics as he cycles through the stages of acceptance and she vacillates between textbook doctoring and real human compassion.

Gordon-Levitt plays it perfectly as a reg-

ular, soft-spoken guy who is numb to his predicament, and frustrated at having to expend energy comforting his family and friends, instead of the other way around.

It will all come to a head, of course, and Adam eventually breaks down (in Vancouver’s Stanley Park) in a dramatically realistic scene.

The script, too, is admirably low key.

50/50 doesn’t beat us with the cancer thing, neither does it overplay the tear-jerker moments, of which there are plenty. And this is a Seth Rogen movie, after all, so you can bet that a tender moment will be quickly followed up by a pee joke.

Thankfully, filmmakers deny the frat-boy temptation to play the side-effects of chemotherapy for laughs (vomiting occurs offcamera) and keep post-surgery ickiness to a minimum. This is not the Operation Channel. And early indications show that audience members aren’t squeamish about a cancer comedy: director Adam Levine (The Wackness) got a standing ovation at the Toronto Film Festival a few weeks back.

Rogen and writer Will Reiser were living together and working on Sacha Baron Cohen’s Da Ali G Show, when, at age 25, Reiser got sick. The script was his catharsis and “became a passion project for all of us,” Rogen says on the film’s website. New digs will include a revamped logo, fresh colours and an updated tagline. The VACC is seeking suggestions for its new slogan, which is currently “Metro Vancouver’s Cycling Advocates.” Email erin@ vacc.bc.ca with your ideas.

The Vancouver Secondary School Athletic Association is throwing in the towel on Playerstreak.com, a league management site that tracks the city’s public school sports schedules, scores and playoffs. The VSSAA has returned to esportsdesk.com, a more cumbersome but also more affordable site, which has partial season results dating back at least five years with the exception of the 2010-11 season.

A yearly subscription to Playerstreak.com cost the school board $6,400, according to a communications manager—more than 10 times the fee for esportsdesk. com, which the school board paid $360 annually to use.

The decision to try the more expensive Playerstreak.com was made because the site has more functions, more streamlined scheduling, enhanced communication tools and better playoff management. It was also easier for Harp Sohi, the school board’s athletic director, to track league info.

Said communication director Kurt Heinrich: “Ultimately there were a lot of bells and whistles with PlayerStreak.

The problem was that many of our athletic directors weren’t making use of all the features. As a result, it became clear to our team that we were not getting the best bang for our buck. The decision was made to go back to the basics.”

Twenty-five students at King George high school and two downtown elementary schools will be chosen Friday for an innovative, year-long project designed to teach mechanical skills, foster leadership abilities and bridge inter-generational and inter-racial communities.

The bold ambitions of the “Bike.

Community” project will put students to work each building a bicycle, growing their family’s circle of friends and taking on public speaking and education roles to promote the values of self-propelled transportation.

Participants will be immigrants and new arrivals to Canada.

“Often kids come in from countries where cycling is seen as something that poor people do and often don’t connect it to the opportunity that we see it as,” said King George vice principal Damian Wilmann.

“Parents are often hesitant,” he added. “They feel kids are at risk on the street, which partly is true, but we’re making education a big part of the program by teaching them road safety, how to get the right safety equipment and how to be safe on the streets.”

Involving family, said Wilmann, is a primary focus of Bikes.Community, which counts the YMCA, Gordon Neighourhood House and PEDAL (Pedal Energy Development Alternatives) as partners.

The program runs from October to June and is tied to a Technology 10 course and may eventually be developed for school credit. Ten students from Lord Roberts and Elsie Roy elementary schools will also be selected.

The 11- to 18-year-old students stand to learn how cycling fits into the bigger picture of the environment, health and community. As they get cerebral about their two-wheelers, the students will be building them with their own hands.

“The students do the work. We’re teaching them how to work on different systems and then we give it a safety check before they take them on the road,” said Charlotte Hannah, a senior mechanic with PEDAL, a collective linked to Our Community Bikes that promotes cycling

Students will work on bicycles donated Thursday at a bike drive.

The students won’t build bicycles from a bare-bones frame, but they will examine different makes and models to understand and study diverse mechanical components, parts and tools. Students will then fine-tune and customize a bike that suits their riding interest and fits their size and style.

“In my experience, when someone is just learning, you want to give them time,” said Hannah, who described the four Saturday clinics as “comprehensive.”

“We’re showing them how to do it, letting them try and then working out all the kinks that come with every single bike system. We’ll give you the means to learn it, then perfect it and you can spread that knowledge with your friends and family and you don’t have to rely on a professional to fix things that you can fix yourself.”

The self-sufficiency and independence that come with greasestained fingers in the fall will be coupled with a public speaking tour in the winter and spring when the 25 students share what they’ve learned with other students.

Throughout this time, parents and

families will come together for potluck meals and one day of diversity training.

Students will be selected based on their leadership potential, commitment and their family’s interest and willingness to learn, engage and build a community, said YMCA manager Linda Rubuliak.

“It is a really hands-on, non-threatening way to get together and meet other members of the community,” she said, noting the ethnic, religious and linguistic diversity of the West End and Coal Harbour neighbourhoods that also includes a large LGBTQ community.

“One of the realities of Vancouver and certainly the downtown peninsula is that over 40 per cent of people who live here are foreign born.”

The program is free for students.

The B.C. government put $149,000 toward funding the program for a year.

The first workshop is Oct. 29 at King George.

“There’s something so nice—for adults and children alike—to build a bike. It’s like you didn’t even think you could do this,” said Hannah.

This one is never going to get old for cyclists. No one is ever on the fence about helmets: love ‘em or loathe ‘em, we’ve all got a very strong opinion one way or the other.

Vancouver resident Ron van der Eerden felt so strongly about helmets that he recently launched a court challenge against his $29 ticket for not wearing one, arguing it was a breach of his Charter rights.

Online reaction split right down the middle between outrage at the audacity of the B.C. helmet law and suggestions that Mr. van der Eerden’s foolhardy actions provided ample justification for his brain not being worth the extra protection.

The problem is that the cold, hard facts provide concrete support for both sides of this debate.

Studies suggest that wearing a helmet in an urban setting may not make you even slightly less likely to avoid injury; others go so far as to indicate that wearing a helmet may actually make you more vulnerable, either because drivers are less cautious around helmeted cyclists or because the helmet itself provides a sense of protection that encourages the cyclist to ride more recklessly.

Making a compelling case on the flip side are studies that show exactly what happens to your skull—and the fragile brain it protects—when it suffers a severe impact with a helmet on, and without.

I found it interesting when I first came to B.C. and discovered that helmets were required by law. Back in the U.K., I grew up cycling country roads with the wind in my hair, and helmets never crossed my mind.

When I moved to London, the sheer traffic volume coupled with the disturbing ratio of incredibly bad drivers put helmets on my radar and I figured it was probably smarter to start wearing one. And then I got in an accident where I hit my head— hard—and had my helmet to thank for the fact that I limped away with a severe concussion but also my life. After that, I was a convert.

The accident wasn’t my fault; the driver who hit me was later found guilty of negligent driving in court and lost his licence.

But that’s the thing—when you’re riding in the city day after day, it doesn’t matter how careful a cyclist you are or how many dedicated bike routes you have access to.

It only takes that one fraction of a second’s bad luck, that one road user who does something stupid when there isn’t enough time or space to react, that one slick of spilled oil that looks like just another harmless patch of dirt on the road.

I know plenty of folk on both sides of the helmet debate. They’re all smart, thoughtful people; they’ve put plenty of thought into their position, and have well-reasoned and logical arguments to support it. And I don’t pretend to be an activist; I do believe that wearing a helmet is a personal choice, as long as cyclists are willing to participate in discussions about helmet-wearing, insurance, and medical costs, and accept the consequences of their decision. But from a personal point of view, it doesn’t matter how strongly someone makes the case against wearing a helmet. For me, nothing is ever going to be more persuasive than the noise I heard when my head hit the tarmac.

After stops in Winnipeg and Montreal, Barbara eventually settled in Vancouver, where she spent the bulk of her career and was instrumental in developing the occupational therapy department at St. Paul’s Hospital, where she invented the 'space shoe.' She believed in volunteerism and served many during her lifetime.

Barbara never married but came close a time or two. Barbara was a very private soul and her life dream was to be of service to others and to explore her creative ambitions in interior design and cooking. Barbara was a fabulous chef as all who knew her could attest. She passed away after a long battle with breast cancer in Adelaide, Australia, where she was cremated. Her remains were brought back to Canada and a small ceremony at sea was performed in accordance with her wishes. Look west, towards the sunset and you will find her. RIP my friend. I miss you everyday.

Lexus strikes balance between graceful and predatory

IS great combination of sports and luxury davidchao In the ’90s, Lexus was the antiBMW. Instead of producing “Ultimate Driving Machines,” Toyota’s luxury division built its reputation on cars such as the ES and LS—sedans that isolated you from the road, championing comfort over performance. So, when the rear-wheel-drive IS sedan was introduced in 1998, no one in North America really knew what to think of it. Was Lexus really trying to go toe-to-toe with BMW? Yes it was... and no, it wasn’t.

The IS (short for “Intelligent Sport”) immediately became the most spirited vehicle in Lexus’s line-up, but the automaker clearly lacked the reputation and—more importantly—the experience necessary to produce a true rival to BMW’s 3-Series sedan. So, while BMW was one of many targets, Lexus engineers were likely more concerned with separating themselves from Honda/Acura, their chief competitor at the time.

What was the original IS, then?

It was a great starting point for Lexus. A 2005 redesign turned the IS into one of the best-looking vehicles in its class, and the platform was extended with the introduction of a hardtop-convertible version. However, the big news came in 2007, with the arrival of the performance-tuned IS F. Paving the way for the LFA supercar, the V8-powered IS F was primed to compete with the top dog in the sports-sedan world, the

BMW M3, and Lexus’s entry has held its own against the best that Germany can offer. That’s quite an accomplishment for the antiBMW. The challenge now is to dial back the excitement to a level where consumers can afford it.

While a base IS 250 is a very reasonable $32,900, the IS F more than doubles in price, retailing for $69,950. In order to improve its standing as a performance automaker, Lexus needs a model that’s more accessible, priced to take on mid-tier sports sedans such as the Audi S4, BMW 335i, Infiniti G37.

So, that’s just what it has done.

For 2011, Lexus has introduced a catalogue of F-Sport performance and styling enhancements borrowed from the IS F, as well as an F-Sport Package available ex-

clusively on the rear-wheel-drive IS 350. With the augmentations, an IS 350 F-Sport offers perhaps 80 per cent of the performance and enjoyment you’ll get from an IS F, at much lower price point.

That’s an impressive bargain.

Perhaps the only annoyance is that you can’t get the F-Sport Package with any other IS model, though you can purchase the components separately (at greater expense). So, while the rearwheel-drive IS 350 F-Sport may prove more fun to drive than a similarly priced S4, the Audi’s allwheel-drive capabilities remain an important differentiator in cold-weather Canada.

In a world full of German sports sedans, it’s nice to know that we have alternatives. Who knew, 13 years ago, that one of the best

sports sedans would come from Lexus?

Design The IS was already a goodlooking car, and the F-Sport accessories give the sedan a sharper edge. Much of the expression comes from the dark-graphite 10spoke wheels and front lip spoiler, which combine to give the IS 350 a more athletic profile. The exterior details are rounded out with a decklid spoiler and F-Sport badges.

If the goal was to strike a balance between the graceful IS and the predatory IS F, then Lexus designers have succeeded. The subtle changes augment the IS 350 without veering into the garish.

Inside, the IS 350 still has the business-like feel of a Lexus, with additions such as an F-

Sport shifter, aluminum scuff plates and foot pedals, and a steering wheel covered in perforated leather with white, baseball-seam stitching. As always, this Lexus is superbly built.

Performance Power comes from a wonderful, 3.5L V6 generating 306-hp and 277 lb-ft of torque, attached to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission (the latter with paddle shifters). The engine hums along beautifully, delivering power instantaneously and with a throaty roar augmented by the performance exhaust system.

In addition to the exhaust system, F-Sport enhancements include a sport suspension, performance shocks and springs, thicker stabilizer bars, and upgraded brakes.

With the revised suspension and stronger brakes, the IS 350 F-Sport’s handling is simply phenomenal. The sedan is much firmer than the base IS without losing its smoothness, giving it great agility and precision.

As good as the driving experience is, the IS 350 F-Sport’s best selling feature may be that it retains much of the renowned Lexus ride quality, which means that the performance comes with virtually no tradeoffs. It’s faster to react and far more responsive to steering input, but still comfortable on rough roads.

Environment Interior space is not a strength of the compact IS platform, but the F-Sport improvements make that less of an issue. With its enhanced performance, the small IS 350 F-Sport sedan can be seen as a practical alternative to a luxury sports coupe, offering four doors and a decent trunk. Of course, that still doesn’t help it against other sedans.

The power-adjustable, heated sport seats are extremely well designed.

The 3-Series remains the benchmark for luxury sports sedans, with solid handling that owes much to BMW’s continued emphasis on a near 50:50 weight distribution from front to back.

• Infiniti G37 $46,540 is a very reasonable price for the top-end G37 M6 Sport, powered by a 3.7L V6 with 328-hp and 269 lb-ft of torque, and equipped with a six-speed manual, rear-wheel drive, and a sport-tuned suspension.
