Yet even those who acknowledge a concern also cite two main obstacles: lack of money and political will to see a solution through. As the buck-passing continues between different levels of government, there seems no solution on the horizon, and for now, the signs reading “No Public Washrooms” remain posted on station walls.

n a bright Monday afternoon, Aug. 17, 2009, Vancouverites were invited for a free ride on the new $2 billion Canada Line in celebration of the rapid transit system’s opening. For some, the launch recalled the excitement of the start of the original Skytrain Expo Line that heralded the 1986 World’s Fair.

As befitting a “world class city” preparing to host the Olympics the following year, the trains whisked like sleek, silvery torpedoes fired down a tube, racing quietly from the airport to downtown Vancouver in 25 minutes, bringing the prospect of fewer automobiles on the road and a cleaner environment. More than 80,000 riders that day settled into the cars’ spacious well-lit interiors, and with the trains’ new speed and efficiency, it seemed that all their needs had been well met.

Except one.

That unmet need is the topic of many public complaints the Courier later found (through the freedom of information law) emailed to the transit authority over the past three years. As one writer summed it up: “Dear TransLink. I know you make a big deal about ‘listening,’ however you appear to be deaf when asked when or where you are going to install toilets. I have had to

Her trip spoiled, I called a cab and she went home, her day ruined, and she was neither the first, and I know definitely not the last. The TransLink washroom issue has been low on the political radar, yet many riders are flushed with indignation over what they see as an obtuse and insensitive official attitude to the issue. Some call for public washrooms to be built, while others question such a need when staff-only

n the grand scale of political affairs, some may regard the lack of transit washrooms as simply too distasteful or trivial to dwell upon. However, for any transit rider who has suffered from a long-unrelieved bowel or bladder (or have small children with this problem), from diabetes or a sudden attack of diarrhea, the matter is anything but trivial. Deprived of their health, comfort and dignity, some as a last resort are compelled to relieve themselves furtively behind bushes or buildings, fearful of public exposure or official penalties for doing so.

Or so they told TransLink in emails. One writer talked of trying to aid the elderly with medical needs: “In New Westminster on one occasion when I used the elevator to transport an older person, I could not believe the urine smell inside the unit.”

Continued from page 4 Later, at the 22nd Street SkyTrain station, “because of my prostrate problem I could not hang on any longer. When I stepped behind the bushes I was more than appalled at the amount of excrement.”

Others made similar points: • “I think the architects behind the grand plan assumed we all have excellent bladder control.”

• “I recently walked the SkyTrain Trail from Clark Street all the way to New Westminster. A fantastic walk, and thank you so much for the trail, but there were no public washrooms, so I had to pee a couple of times behind a tree or bush or whatever could offer me a modicum of cover!”

• “I had to walk four blocks till I found a Starbucks that let me use the loo.”

• “Caller and husband both seniors. They have medical problems and they cannot go for any length of time without a washroom break. They would like to see washrooms at SkyTrain.”

• “I am an old lady, and we need to pee when we go out more often than others.

It’s not a world class city. I have been to London, Paris, Sydney, and all the major terminals have loos. Please install toilets.

Even if you have to pay, it’s worth it for a bit of relief.”

To such complainants, the TransLink customer service branch emailed a standard reply: “The high cost of installing, yearly operating, upgrading, maintaining and personnel required to have washrooms was the reason they were not put into the Expo line back in the mid-80’s, and continues to be the reason they will not be put

If a passenger has to go to the washroom, what do they do? They must find a public washroom at a gas station, restaurant, local business, mall, or go home, whichever is closest.”

he once-active Transit Users Union was recently dissolved, leaving a gap in advocacy. Yet some politicians are alert to

the issue. COPE Coun. Ellen Woodsworth phoned the Courier from Ontario to say: “I hardly ever call the media when I’m on holiday, but I feel so strongly that TransLink should deal with this problem. Seniors have called me to complain about the lack of washrooms, and their pain and humiliation. It may even be an election issue this fall.”

In September 2006, Vancouver council passed a motion encouraging TransLink to build public toilets at major transit interchanges. Yet the Courier’s Allen Garr reported: “Don’t bet on any relief. According to a city staff report, the last time council asked TransLink for public pots to piss in was May 24, 2005. So far not even a tinkle of interest has been shown.”

Last month Coquitlam council voted unanimously to urge the province and TransLink to change their policies to have public washroom facilities—available at any time—in the Evergreen stations in Coquitlam. (Some have also called for diaper-changing stations for new mothers.)

Yet TransLink has long maintained that having freely accessible toilets isn’t part of its mandate, is too costly, is not part of its operational budget, and open bathrooms are prone to vandalism, rape, muggings, intravenous drug users and prostitution.

These outlets would need to be watched constantly by security personnel, it says.

“It’s not a priority for TransLink now,” Doug Kelsey, TransLink chief operating officer, told the Courier. “Riders in need can go to nearby coffee shops and restaurants, who usually let people use their washrooms. I used to work at Starbucks and we would let people in. Most other cities’ rapid transit systems don’t have washrooms at all their stations either.”

He added there will be washrooms in the Gateway development when it opens at the Marine Drive transit station. Still, he is “willing to listen” to the public’s input on the issue.

First, some asked, why pay to build transit washrooms when they already exist? Most riders—even those who have used the two older lines for the past quarter century—might be surprised to learn that all SkyTrain stations do in fact have washrooms on site. But these are well concealed, under lock and key and reserved for staff. Whenever the green jacketed attendants can be found, they can sometimes be persuaded to unlock the door to let a seriously needy rider into that washroom, on a case by case basis at their discretion. One letter writer to a local paper last year advised the general public to simply demand access to these staff washrooms, since taxpayers paid for their creation and so essentially own them.

TransLink spokesperson Ken Hardie said that through TransLink’s Access Transit Advisory Committee, people with disabilities are provided an orientation to transit and as part of that process received information on access to staff washrooms. Hardie’s standard advice to other riders is “Go before you go.” Second, some riders suggest portapotties as a cheap and temporary relief, better than nothing at all, while other options are being studied. Hardie countered that portapotties are unsightly and smelly. During the Olympics, TransLink did install 12 portable toilets outside the Waterfront Station

THE PUBLIC TOILET ACT, PASSED BY THE NDP IN 1975, OUTLAWS PAY TOILETS IN PUBLIC BUILDINGS. but have since removed them.

Third, as part of its long-term street furniture contract with CBS/JCDecaux, the city installed eight automated public toilets in the downtown area. These toilets are automatically cleaned and sanitized after each use, available to the public for free, and are in service year-round, 24 hours a day and seven days a week. The large toilets (such as the one at Main and Terminal) are wheelchair-accessible. There was no need for capital funds because the washrooms are installed at little cost

by CBS/JCDecaux, which supplies them in exchange for the advertising on the side of the toilet’s housing. Otherwise the machines would have cost $285,000 each. TransLink has shown no interest in this option.

Fourth, as Kelsey noted, some businesses do indeed generously grant access to their washrooms (despite posting signs discouraging it). The problem is that this access is purely voluntary, erratic and arbitrary, and not available when that business is closed.

For a partial solution—that is, only

for the working hours—some propose public-private partnerships, whereby businesses such as restaurants could be given a small annual fee for guaranteeing their washroom availability to transit users, which in turn might prompt new customer loyalty, a winwin for all.

Fifth, to finance new washrooms, some riders say they are perfectly willing to pay a fee for using them. For example, Singapore has 750 paid toilets, London 678, and Athens 500. In San Francisco, anyone who can’t afford the 25-cent entry fee can obtain free tokens from non-profit organizations. The only roadblock is that in 1975, Dave Barrett’s NDP government passed the Public Toilet Act, which outlaws pay toilets in public buildings, and nobody has yet dared to repeal it.

This week, TransLink reported that its ridership numbers keep booming, with 114 million commuter trips in the first six months of this year, a record projected to surpass the 2010 Olympic year. Yet for now, the public complaints to TransLink on washrooms continue, such as this: “Has our culture stooped so low that I should have to piss in the street, or in my pants? We call ourselves a civilized city?” Concluded another: “Facilities have to be provided for the commuter, traveller, shopper, street people or homeless. If they were to knock on my door I would welcome them to use my bathroom—we are all human with the same requirements.” stanleytromp@gmail.com

One crazy summer

Yes, I’ve returned.

Just couldn’t take another week of lounging on a beach, camping in the woods, reading books, hanging with the kids, watching baseball and deciding what I should throw on the grill.

Glad that’s over.

So what did I miss?

As I scan through my 400-plus emails, some from generous people overseas offering me huge sums of money, I’m not sure that I missed a lot during my sojourn away from this world-class city.

That’s unless you consider there are still no charges in the Stanley Cup riot, Adriane Carr will seek a council seat and Coun. Suzanne Anton and the NPA continue to rattle the gates at city hall.

In fact, the NPA’s media machine has been busy this month.

In no particular order, mayoral candidate Anton announced she supports the B.C. government’s proposal to establish an auditor general for municipalities, sent a series of recommendations to the Provincial Riot Review Commission and circulated a newsletter

Jack Layton visited Vancouver many times including a stop in 2006. that stated candidates “are loving the summer campaign.”

She also announced her fall election platform will include something called a “prosperity agenda.” The agenda will focus on job creation and tax relief. Not surprisingly, she was critical of Mayor Gregor Robertson and his ruling Vision Vancouver council on this topic.

“Gregor Robertson and Vision Vancouver unveiled an economic vision for the city last month that

amounted to no more than an uncosted [sic] housing plan and a 162-page green-washing manifesto focused on making Vancouver the urban farming capital of North America,” Anton wrote.

“Both will result in increased taxes and millions in hidden costs for years to come.”

Vision Vancouver has defended both plans and city staffers ensured councillors that a business case would be made for any initiatives. That wasn’t good enough

for Anton, who says her plan is to “focus on the industries which create real jobs, head offices, supply lines and demand for professional services.”

First, she has to get elected.

A rare breed

Now to Jack Layton…

Spent a bit of time with the late NDP leader when he was a city councillor in Toronto in the 1980s.

Met him while writing a paper

for a poli sci course at Ryerson Polytechnic Institute. At the time, Layton was seeking re-election with the downtown NDP and I joined him and two other candidates for a night of campaigning.

We tooled around downtown Toronto in an old Volvo, with me thinking how cool it was to be the only reporter along for the ride.

Metro councillor Dale Martin was at the wheel, soon-to-be-elected councillor Liz Amer was in the passenger seat while Layton and I rode in the back.

Layton, in his late 30s at the time, was his easygoing self, smiling and confident as he took my questions. He was the same during exchanges with voters at the door.

A couple of years later, I wrote a feature about Layton for the school newspaper. And since then, I’ve talked to him a few more times as I went from paper to paper, including the Courier.

I share these anecdotes to point out something Layton offered that many of the current lot of politicians don’t: accessibility.

Whether he was a city councillor or a national leader, Layton was always available to answer my questions—no matter what the issue or how far away I was from the steps of Toronto city hall or the doors of Parliament.

“Do I have any barbecue sauce on my sunglasses?”

I had to ask another journalist that question Wednesday morning while taking part in a food tour of the PNE’s midway. I couldn’t check myself because my fingers, and much of my notebook and pen, were covered in the sticky, red sauce—the life’s blood of the barbecue Pit Masters grilling at this year’s Fair at the PNE. Only after I inquired about the state of my sunglasses did I realize that the person I asked, whom I had never met before, had barbecue sauce smeared across much of her lower face.

“You’ve got a little there…” I said, gesturing towards her chin with my one clean pinky finger.

The visit to these barbecue aficionados was the final stop on the tour organized to highlight the more unusual and new food offerings at The Fair this year. I was happy because I had the opportunity to try the barbecued brisket and ribs slow-smoked and lovingly created by North Vancouver’s Justin Kyllo and family, whom I had interviewed and written about two days prior. It’s a rarity in this job to have the opportunity to follow up a story in such an up-close and personal manner. And the hometown barbecue master delivered what he promised, a sweet and spicy rib slow-cooked and smoked to perfection.

Earlier this year I wrote a travel story about a visit to Morimoto Restaurant in Waikiki in which I described Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto as an evil genius for introducing me to his concept of “pre-dessert,” a dessert served before dessert.

But after this food tour I confess there is new evil

sandrathomas genius at work and it’s name is the Pennsylvania Dutch Funnel Cakes. The kiosk is serving the hottest trend in deep-fried food fair, which this year is the deep-fried Pop-Tart. And just when you thought the concept couldn’t get any more trailer trash, after the Pop-Tart is dipped in funnel cake batter and deep fried, it’s sprinkled with Fruity Pebbles cereal, a dollop of whipped cream and topped off with rainbow-coloured sprinkles.

I was hoping it would taste as disgusting as it looked, but alas, the deep-fried Pop-Tart was a heavenly bite of gooey, sweetness with just the right amount of texture and crunch thanks to the addition of the multi-coloured cereal. (I’ve been watching way too much Food Network.)

Our next taste test included an introduction to the Colossal Blooming Onion at an off-shoot to Jimmy’s Lunch, which has been serving hamburgers to fair goers since 1929. The fried on-

ions at Jimmy’s are as iconic to The Fair as the vintage wooden roller coaster, but with a new generation at the helm, a new generation of onion follows. The Blooming Onion is a whole onion cut to resemble a flower, twice-battered and deep fried, served in this case with a chipotle-mayo dipping sauce. One serving at Jimmy’s has about 1,000 calories. It was at this point in the tour PNE spokesperson Laura Ballance interjected and ensured us all there are many healthy food options at the PNE and the Deep Fried PopTart and Blooming Onion should be considered more of a treat. opinion ‘DYNAMIC DISEQUILIBRIUM’ AT PLAY

Human interference stirs and destroys great flocks During this time of year, it’s animal central in my neighbourhood. Black bears are a regular annoyance, if not a hazard, though I’ve only seen one up close. It ambled along in an ursine version of a pimp roll, casually batting over garbage pails and oblivious to the unholy racket from neighbours banging pots and pans.

Coyotes, raccoons and the rare cougar sighting round out the local wildlife scene. And squirrels, of course, which seem a bit thin on the ground here lately. The eastern grey squirrel is one of the more recent wildlife arrivals to the Pacific Northwest, originating from a small population brought to Stanley Park from New York in 1909. Since 1970, this generalist forager has expanded its turf into Lower Mainland residential neighbourhoods, often appearing in its black melanistic phase.

The eastern grey squirrel is recent enough to be called an “invasive species.” But when you get right down to it, many native species originally came from somewhere else, including us. Human beings are the invasive species par excellence, and we have catapulted other organisms across entire oceans, from tomatoes and potatoes to zebra mussels to eastern grey squirrels.

The term, “invasive species” has set off debates in academic circles lately, with a vocal minority of ecologists insisting that the phrase contains a conservative bias against recent, nonhuman immigrants. In any case, nature does not exist “in balance,” and never has, in spite of encyclicals otherwise from St. Gore and the Disney Channel. The right term is “dynamic disequilibrium,” with animal populations expanding and contracting over time.

Humans didn’t invent disequilibrium, although we certainly have managed to turbocharge it.

Consider the parable of the passenger pigeon. Passenger pigeons once filled the skies of the Americas, literally in the billions, raining enough excrement to force people indoors. Graceful and fast in flight, they were referred to as “blue meteors.”

“Gobbling their chow, they sometimes twittered in tones musical enough that people mistook them for little girls,” observes journalist Charles C. Mann in his book Ancient Americans: Rewriting the History of the New World. The birds were ravenous eaters. As a boy, the naturalist John Muir said he witnessed a flock buzzsaw through “thousands of acres of acorns perfectly clean in a few minutes.” A hundred years later, the naturalist and artist John J. geoffolson witnessed a sky blackened for three days by a single mass of passenger pigeons. “The air was literally filled with pigeons; the light of noon-day was obscured as by an eclipse.”

Far from being an annoyance, the tasty passenger pigeon was a sign of God’s grace to the New World colonists. In the lore of one eastern aboriginal tribe, “the bird represented nature’s generosity, a species literally selected by the spirit world to nourish humankind,” notes Mann. People cooked the birds in stews, smoked them over fires and baked them into pies.

They even plucked their feathers to stuff mattresses and fed them to livestock.

Then one day, there were no more passenger pigeons. The last bird died in captivity in 1914. The symbol of nature’s bounty became an icon for human greed and shortsightedness. Yet the story doesn’t end there. The passenger pigeon had an appetite for maize, making it a natural competitor with the human indigenous population. Yet archeological digs have found very few bones of the birds in pre-Columbian middens, even though such an abundant source of protein would surely be a highly prized part of the native diet. The conclusion: the birds were not abundant prior to the first European arrivals. The avian throngs seen by Audubon were, in the words of one archaeologist, “outbreak populations—always a symptom of an extraordinarily disrupted ecological system.”

The Edenic world seen by 19th century observers, teaming with game—millions of bison, passenger pigeons, etc.—is now suspected to have been a result of human interference, in itself.

The first settlers may have decimated a numbers of “keystone species,” life forms that are central nodes for ecological dependencies, setting off a chain reaction of population explosions.

The parable of the passenger pigeon has become a bit more complicated. Yet one way or another, human beings always seem to end up eating crow.

Former city councillor Peter Ladner wrote to the Courier about replacing tear downs with duplexes or triplexes instead of the mansions that we see being built.

For sure, anything is better than the monster homes that we are seeing. At the rate that they are being built, in five to 10 years time, one will need to choose between one of these homes or an 800 square-foot condo, especially on Vancouver’s West Side.

Where is the “ecodensity” in that?

The mayor is constantly talking about making Vancouver the “green capital,” all this mega building is definitely not the way

about it. It seems that on every block on the West Side, there is new construction!

Where is the reduce, reuse and recycle in that?

Have you seen the amount of garbage that comes from the destruction and reconstruction of building, not to say the use of non-renewable resources?

If we are going to demolish perfectly good homes, then let’s do it so that there is affordable housing, as Mr. Ladner suggests. Why have one huge home and one small home, when you could have two or three similar sized homes?

Robertson and Anton play election politics We want

To the editor: Re: “Robertson’s Riot, Suzanne’s Scabs sure to be election slogans,” Aug. 18.

It’s the usual cheap politics that stands behind the NPA attempt to tag Gregor Robertson with responsibility for the Stanley Cup riot.

Having said that, we should all be concerned about Suzanne Anton’s attempt to dodge the issue of the use of scabs by NPA campaign chair Peter Armstrong in his dispute with the unionized employees at the Rocky Mountaineer company.

This move reveals where she stands on this fundamental issue.

By the same token, however, the absence of Gregor Robertson’s name on the pro-labour letter may well indicate—as Tom Sandborn suggests—that Robertson is taking a pass on signing, so

as not to tarnish his image with the more right-wing segments of Vancouver’s voting population.

Meanwhile, the NPA and Vision Vancouver each remain beholden to their own set of real estate developers. All of this compels me to concur with Sandborn’s contention that “It makes more sense to think of Vision as NPA Lite than as Leninism on a bike.”

••• To the editor: Columnist Tom Sandborn recently wrote about the letter signed by Gregor Robertson’s team at city hall criticizing Rocky Mountaineer and its conduct in a labour negotiation. The chair of Rocky Mountaineer is Peter Armstrong, who is the volunteer chair of the NPA

campaign in the upcoming civic election.

It is clearly not the job of city councillors to interfere with the staff relations in any privately held companies. This is for very good reasons—we cannot know all the facts, we are not HR specialists, and we have no control, nor should we, over private companies.

The important question here is why doesn’t Gregor Robertson’s team of councillors know this? Are they now planning to interfere with staff relations in every business that has facilities within our city boundaries or is this letter merely a political stunt? Either answer should make voters question the suitability of this confused team to govern our city. We deserve better.

A provincial government review of anti-money laundering measures in B.C. casinos recommends creating a cross-agency task force to tackle crime linked to gambling facilities.

The review, which was released Wednesday, pointed out there are no formal links between the province’s gaming policy and enforcement branch and police to investigate casino-related crime.

Without an arrangement between the enforcement branch and police, it will “remain difficult to assure an appropriate level of response to, and investigation of, criminal offences related to gaming, including money laundering,” the review said. “Without these changes, money laundering and other serious criminal activity suspected at gaming facilities will rarely rise sufficiently in priority to warrant police investigation,” the review added.

In response to the review, the gaming policy and enforcement branch created an “action plan” that outlined what it is doing to combat money laundering. The plan was released in conjunction with the government review. Neither document provided details on the level of money laundering at casinos but noted a series of news reports in January on large cash transactions at casinos in what prompted the review.

Edgewater Casino and Hastings Racecourse are the city’s only gambling facilities. Earlier this year, Edgewater’s owners Paragon Gaming unsuccessfully pitched a proposal to city council to build a mega casino adjacent to B.C. Place Stadium. During the public hearings, Vancouver Police Department Deputy Chief Warren Lemcke told council Edgewater has generated an average of 70 police calls a year at a cost of $8,500 annually.

Lemcke didn’t elaborate on types of calls

but described the volume as minimal and that the calls didn’t involve money laundering or crimes tied to gambling. “I’m actually more concerned about bars and nightclubs,” he said at the time.

The enforcement branch said it will determine how best to implement a cross-agency task force after completing other recommendations laid out in the review, although it noted “an informal network is active and productive.” “[The gaming policy and enforcement branch] believes that the other recommendations in this report will have a powerful effect and significantly improve the [anti-money laundering] regime in B.C.,” the action plan said. “In the interim, a more formalized approach and better coordination between interested agencies and [B.C. Lottery Corporation] has been established to ensure effective communication.”

Other recommendations include: • Enhance training for staff at gambling facilities to better detect suspicious transactions while at the same time “not draw conclusions about the ultimate origin of funds based solely on the identification of a patron and his or her pattern of play.”

• Hire an independent company to help develop electronic funds transfer systems to change what is a cash-dependent industry.

Allowing gamblers to leave a casino with a cheque instead of cash is expected to reduce the possibility of a gambler being robbed.

• Establish more formal contacts and relationships with enforcement agencies in jurisdictions with large, longstanding gambling industries.

Admirer lauds late NDP leader, denounces Prime Minister Harper

Sherry Sakamoto pulled up to the Vancouver Art Gallery on her bike Wednesday afternoon and grabbed a bouquet of flowers from her panniers.

“They’re for Jack,” she said after laying it on the steps of the gallery, where a makeshift shrine was created in memory of late national NDP leader Jack Layton, who died of cancer Monday. “I really feel that Jack represented the every person and I just wanted to show my respects.”

Sakamoto confessed she “voted strategically” in the last federal election in May and not for Layton and the NDP, which won an unprecedented 103 seats in Parliament to form the Official Opposition. “I didn’t want to vote strategically, but I felt I had to,” she said, adding that she has a “soft spot” for the NDP and its predecessor the CCF. “It was the only party that tried to support my parents through the [Japanese] internment.”

Sakamoto was one of dozens of people who stopped by the shrine on the Robson Street side of the gallery to pay their respects to Layton, who was 61 when he died at his home in Toronto.

Cards and notes lay on the steps, including one from Audia, which read, “I didn’t know him but I know I loved him.” Another read, “I heard somebody say he was the best prime minister we never had.”

Among the notes were Orange Crush cans and bottles—symbols of the NDP’s orange colour—and flowers and candles. What caught Clement Lau’s attention was a picture somebody drew of Layton’s moustache.

“An outstanding person, an outstanding politician.”

Thousands of people turned out Wednesday at the House of Commons in Ottawa to file past the NDP leader’s Canadian-flag draped coffin. Politicians, staffers and Layton’s family were all on hand.

Layton’s coffin will return to Toronto and lie in repose at city hall before the state funeral Saturday. The ceremony will be televised—news to 14-year-old girls Maeve O’Sullivan and Jade Wu, who stopped by the shrine at the gallery. “My cousin passed away from cancer and it was really sad,” O’Sullivan said.

Parents of children attending École Jules Quesnel and Laura Secord elementary will likely breathe easier this September after extensive structural upgrades to make them safer in an earthquake were completed in time for the start of classes.

Students who spent the last school year in temporary portable classrooms or, in the case of French immersion students at École Jules Quesnel were squeezed into nearby Queen Elizabeth Elementary, will return to their own hallways and playgrounds now that construction is completed.

The West Side École Jules Quesnel, originally built in the 1920s as a wing of Lord Byng secondary school, received upgrades to its classrooms and exterior walls, as well as the three-storey wing housing the gym and a multi-purpose room replaced. Century-old Laura Secord elementary on the East Side saw far more elaborate renovations done, including the addition of shearwalls and the strengthening of its foundation.

“We went on tours with the staff and they were jumping for joy,” said John Murnane, manager of facilities for the Vancouver School Board. “These projects aren’t just seismic upgrades. When we do these projects, there’s a lot more to it. When we go in there, basically we’re hoping the school won’t see us for another 30 years and when they do, it’s probably a mechanical or an electrical upgrade. You’re not only making it safe and trying to retain the heritage value, you’re also giving schools major, major upgrades.”

Seismic upgrades have been completed sporadically in B.C. for the past few decades, but the majority of the projects have come since 2004 after the provincial government committed to $1.5 billion in safety-oriented refits over 15 years.

A total of 103 schools in the Vancouver district were assessed for seismic risk and assigned a relative priority ranking. So far work has only been completed at 30 schools, and construction at dozens more has yet to begin.

“There are a few ones that are going through what we call PDR—project definition reports—or, in other words, feasibility studies,” said Murnane. “We’re moving as fast as we can here. We put projects forward, and either they get accepted by the Ministry [of Education] or they don’t.”

Patti Bacchus, Vision Vancouver chair of the school board, wants upgrades approved and funded much more quickly.

“This is an urgent issue,” she told the Courier in a phone interview. “Unreinforced masonry is quite typical of what we see right across Vancouver in many of our schools that are around 100 years old and those are about the worst place you can be in an earthquake. The risk of potential collapse is catastrophic. This is a problem that should have been addressed years ago. We have dozens of schools that need to be upgraded and we don’t know if an earthquake is coming next week or in 25 years or longer, but it probably will come and we need to be prepared.”

While she said she was pleased the heritage value of École Jules Quesnel and Secord Elementary were kept, she pointed out that new schools could sometimes be a wiser investment.

During one of her first volunteer shifts at Lookout Emergency Aid Society 40 years ago, Karen O’Shannacery, then a 20-yearold, found a man dead in a garbage bin.

He’d presumably crawled in to warm up at a time when Vancouver had only one shelter for adults, operating in the Downtown Eastside, with 15 beds.

Street homelessness was even more visible then, says O’Shannacery, now executive director of Lookout. “We did find people who were dead in the street.”

The average homeless person in 1971 was a 65-year old alcoholic man. Those into drugs used heroin. Today, the average homeless person in Metro Vancouver is aged 32 to 35 and suffers with a mental illness, drug addiction or both. Three-quarters are men.

“I can’t tell you last time I met somebody who was addicted to heroin,” O’Shannacery said. “Now, almost everybody is a poly-drug user and it’s far more challenging.”

The founders of the non-profit charitable Lookout in 1971 thought they’d “cure” homelessness in 10 years. Four decades later, the number of turn-aways at their shelter is rising. But services have improved, lives have been saved and formerly homeless people have become healthy members of society, O’Shannacery said. Services are no longer solely centered in the Downtown Eastside. Vision Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson promised to end street homelessness by 2015, and the provincial government is helping construct social housing on 14 city-owned sites, although the number of units to be built doesn’t make up for low

cost housing stock that’s been lost.

The mayor has proclaimed it “Lookout’s Solutions to Homelessness Day.” The day includes music, food, games, the opportunity to donate clothes and a dunk tank. “I’ve been told that there’s a whole whack of people who are lined up to get me wet,” O-Shannacery said.

Lookout provides non-judgmental services to more than 9,200 people a year who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. It runs an emergency shelter that operates 24 hours, seven days a week, and offers basic outreach services that include showers and laundry, connections to mental health and addiction services and a drop-in activity space for people with serious mental illnesses. Lookout provides 625 units of transitional and permanent housing, including 37 units in Mount Pleasant. The non-profit also provides job training.

O’Shannacery laughed when asked how homelessness could be solved. She said the solution lies in long-term commitments of federal money, political will and collaboration. “It’s not rocket science,” she said. “We know that people who are homeless need housing and we know that a great many of them need support because we know the principle characteristics that they’re challenged with. But those services are few and far between. That housing is few and far between, and there’s certainly not enough. We know the answers. CBSA officers walked Downtown Eastside beat

Canada Border Services Agency senior officials quarrelled internally about controversial Downtown Eastside patrols during the 2010 Winter Olympics, according to documents released to a local software developer.

“CBSA was really concerned about their image,” said Joey Bowser, who was a member of the Olympic Resistance Network.

“That just seemed utterly bizarre.”

CBSA officers visited the W2 Culture and Media House on Feb. 14, 2010 with Vancouver Police Department officers. Two days later they questioned four people at a Victory Square protest. Both incidents attracted local and national media attention, sparked B.C. Civil Liberties Association complaints and inspired a debate among CBSA officials in Ottawa and Vancouver.

“Why were inland enforcement officers walking the beat with Vancouver Police?”

CBSA director general of operations Susan Kramer asked inland enforcement director Rob Johnston in a Feb. 17, 2010 email.

“Wouldn’t the inland enforcement officers’ time be better spent finding people on immigration warrants (which we will get in trouble for if we don’t do) than walking the beat (which we are not mandated to do)?”

In a reply, Johnston claimed his officers had “the best enforcement results in the

country” and credited partnerships with police.

“To take action that will severely impact that relationship due to a media report that is anti-CBSA is not reasonable,” Johnston said. “The media were provided the facts but elected to not report them.”

Acting vice-president of operations Maureen Tracy chimed in, saying she was concerned about “mandate creep and officer safety and affordability.”

“Of course in person presence on police patrols gets us recognition and improves relationships,” Tracy wrote. “But in this climate, can we afford to do it routinely when we can achieve our own objectives otherwise. Is this a ‘service’ we can afford to provide?”

An April 12, 2010 CBSA memo dismissed the BCCLA complaint. CBSA claimed the presence of officers downtown “should not be construed as an effort to target protesters based on nationality or immigration status.”

The memo claimed CBSA was working within its mandate and had approximately 50 officers “working away from the border in the Vancouver area.”

BCCLA executive director David Eby said CBSA did not appear to employ such a tactic before 2010. “CBSA denied at the time it was unusual, but the documents clearly show that it was,” Eby said.

They’ve lost plants ripped away from their garden.

And despite a sign asking “please don’t eat the veggies,” someone lugged away a pumpkin.

But for the inner city kids who’ve planted the garden with the Kimount Club at East Sixth Avenue and Prince Edward Street, growing vegetables and fruit is one of many ways to make their summer worthwhile.

“It hurts the kids,” said Kimount Club coordinator Joel Thom about the recent thefts. “They notice when things go missing.”

But more important, he said, is how pleased the Mount Pleasant community is to see the garden spring up.

Brittany Liska, who volunteered with inner city schools through the University of B.C.’s Trek Program, started the garden at the 70year-old club last summer after she received a grant.

This year, children in the KidSafe program, which provides a safe haven when schools are closed, dug up grass and planted herbs, fruits and vegetables that include peas, beans, squash, potatoes, strawberries, lettuce, beets and blueberry bushes.

While five to 13-year-olds water, weed and harvest, Liska teaches them about

Brittany Liska garden ecosystems, collecting seeds and how to cook their bounty.

“I’ve seen such a change with the kids of learning to respect things and take care of things and take ownership,” Thom said.

“A lot of our kids use that space as a space for tranquility,” he added. “They choose those garden spaces as their safe space to go and decompress and take a few moments.”

Nine-year-old Mitra Morgan has attended the club for two years.

She marvelled that the garden includes a “gigantic” zucchini that is almost the size of her arm and was planning to take home a “teensy” carrot the size of her thumb. She has grown tomatoes and flowers on the balcony of her apartment and has always liked eating vegetables, but she’s learned something new.

“I like the fresh stuff,” Morgan said.

The Kimount Club is one

of 11 Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast B.C. in Metro Vancouver.

It’s where kids go to be kids.

“Just come here and experience many different opportunities and things that you can’t do in a one-bedroom apartment,” Thom said.

Kimount offers team and non-traditional sports, homework clubs, tutoring and games that “trick youth” into sharpening their language skills and a music program. Teens can learn leadership skills and receive training in child abuse prevention.

“If someone wants to come and just shoot a game of pool or play foosball, or we have toy boxes full of Barbies and Legos and all that kind of stuff, where kids who maybe don’t have those things at home can come in and experience what it is to play with those things as a child,” Thom added.

The club serves youth aged six to 18, most of whom come from the many nearby apartment buildings. Many are from singleparent homes.

“We have over 25 languages spoken in the club,” Thom said.

The Dangers of Being a Pedestrian

Of the 13 traffic fatalities thus far in 2011 in the City of Vancouver, nine have been pedestrians, compared to six pedestrian fatalities in the whole of 2010.

Currently the media has been highlighting these numbers and Vancouver city council’s latest efforts to making walking safer.

A recent Globe & Mail attempt to provide a ‘bigger picture’ look at the problem—by looking at the Lower Mainland as a whole—was enlightening about the statistics gathering process, our reaction to the numbers, and our high numbers compared to Toronto and Montreal.

About our statistics gathering process, the G&M article noted that “statistics-collecting is divided among several different police forces” and ICBC, which collects the regional statistics. It suggests that ICBC is always “two years behind and its numbers don’t match those of the police,” whose numbers, in turn, don’t match the numbers reported in the media. This renders the totals somewhat suspect, and, combined with the almost ‘invisible’ reporting in the suburbs—especially of pedestrian injuries, leads to “few people even realiz[ing] that the region’s pedestrian death and injury rate is as bad as it is.”

Where pedestrian fatality rates are known, and known to be high, however, the article asserted that little attention is paid. It compared Abbottsford’s national notoriety for its 2009 homicide statistics—nine fatalities—to the almost non-response to its even higher number —11—in 2010 of pedestrian fatalities. An Abbotsford police constable reportedly offered this explanation: “It’s almost like we’ve come to accept that, as a commuter society, someone’s going to get hit.”

How do the Lower Mainland’s statistics compare?

According to the RCMP’s 2010 statistics, the 32 pedestrian fatalities were about average, previous

years’ statistics ranging from 30 to 42.

In metro Montreal, a region of 1.9 million compared to the Lower Mainland’s 2.3 million, the 2010 total of 18 was down from the high of 27 in 2006.

And in metro Toronto, a region of 2.6 million, the 2010 total of 20 was down from the 23-to-31-norm of previous years.

In late July 2011, Vancouver city council approved a number of initiatives. Dozens of new cameras will be installed at several of the most dangerous intersections. There will be more pedestrian countdown timers, longer walk times, more speed boards alerting drivers to their speed, and a new active transportation committee to give cyclists and pedestrians a voice in policy decisions. Yet to be approved is a campaign with the police and ICBC to raise road safety awareness.

The most controversial initiative has been the reduction of the speed limit on East Hastings Street from 50 kmp to 30 kmp in the six blocks between Abbott and Jackson Streets. This stretch was targeted for recently having the worst pedestrian fatality statistics largely resulting from the unpredictable behaviour of many of the area’s pedestrians, plagued as they are with drug and alcohol addictions and mental illness.

Some vigorous objection taken to likening the unpredictable behaviours of ‘judgmentally impaired’ adults to schoolchildren and thus requiring drivers to slow down, was mentioned in news reports.

The clock is ticking on what we had to accept as summer this year, so my advice is to get outside and enjoy what’s left of the season before the dark, dreary and damp days of fall and winter arrive. Sigh.

Last year, Paralympic silver medalist Josh Dueck smashed the Guinness World Record for the number of high fives by an individual in 24 hours by slapping hands with a whopping 9,307 new friends at the PNE on Aug. 27 and 28 last year. Snap and runner beans are one of the easiest and most generous crops of all. Planted in the warm soil they love, they quickly outgrow weeds, their flowers are pretty and with daily watering the harvest is long and bountiful.

Another bonus is the ease of seed-saving. Carrots, beets, onions and most other vegetables are biennial which means the plant must stay in the garden for a second year while it produces flowers and seed.

But bean seeds begins drying almost immediately while in pods on the plant.

Meanwhile the harvest of its young, green siblings can continue. To ensure sustained production and for genetic diversity, it’s best to select only one pod for drying on any individual plant.

More care is needed in saving seeds of dwarf beans since any pod that touches the ground tends to rot at the end due to rain or watering or the morning dew of late summer.

Once the pods are fairly dry and yellow, it’s safe to pick them and finish the drying indoors.

I usually leave the seeds in the pod for a couple of weeks before shelling them and spreading them out on an old cookie sheet. Glass jars in a refrigerator are the ideal storage setup (but label them “seed” to protect them from cooks).

even scattered randomly throughout.

The advantages of pole beans are mainly ease of picking, less risk of fungal diseases and their decorative potential on arbors or use as privacy fences.

Runner beans have the most spectacular flowers: red, or white or bi-coloured in the cultivar “Painted Lady.” Humming birds love the red blooms. Many runner beans are now extra tender and stringless: such as “Scarlet Empire” from thompsonmorgan.ca. Others include “Butler,” “Lady Di,” and “Desiree,” from chilternseeds. co.uk.

It’s almost worth growing clumping bamboo for the harvest of bean poles and garden stakes. But there’s a trap. Pole beans climb as high as their supports—and bean poles 16 feet tall can produce beans far too high to be pickable.

This is especially frustrating with runner beans, because the best production is at upper levels. Runner beans need pollination and they’re very visible to bees up there. Snap or French beans are self-fertile.

Later, pole bean vines head down towards the ground producing beans as they go. Tidy gardeners cut out the growth points. Many others let them keep going till frost.

The “Three Sisters” method of mixing beans, corn and squash is an indigenous tradition on this continent. The beans provide nitrogen to enrich the soil, the corn is a support for the beans to climb and the squash keeps the soil shaded and moist for optimum growth.

When I tried, the beans ascended the corn, but the squash headed directly for the sunlight on the outside of the patch.

Next time I’ll use stakes to control it.

Some gardeners grow a few heritage beans for drying. “Midnight Black Turtle” is one of those. It’s delicious in soup and bears nice pink flowers. Like many heritage dry beans, it is a sprawler: not a dwarf, but about three or four feet long and weakstemmed.

davidicuswong From time to time, we should all question what we are doing with our time and with our lives. This is especially true when we simply fall into routine living and find ourselves doing what we do simply just because we’ve being doing it day after day, year after year.

In my own method of meditation (seven questions, seven mantras), I ask myself each day, “What am I doing?”

That question is designed to address my current course of action and routines into which I have fallen. Are my actions aligned with my greatest values? Alternatively, have I somehow lost my way and fallen off the path? Have I responded to circumstances reactively rather than mindfully?

Next month will mark the 20th anniversary of my newspaper column. My first column in the Burnaby Now and the Royal City Record appeared in September 1991.

Over time, I moved from writing twice a month to every week, and my column has been carried by other papers in the Postmedia network including the Vancouver Courier.

At first, I was paid $20 for each article, but after a few years, I chose to make my writing part of my volunteer work for my community. It’s been a forum through which I could contribute to the health and wellbeing of more people than I could personally meet in my medical practice.

Writing a regular column can be challenging. However, I can never run out of topics on which to write as I am ever learning from my patients and my children. I can keep writing as long as I keep learning.

Finding time to write is difficult. I’m as busy as most family physicians with practices that can consume as much of our lives as we allow. I have tried not to steal precious time from my family. I regret that I’ve been unable to personally answer let-

ters from my readers, but I do appreciate their words of support and encouragement.

Without their feedback, writing is a solitary activity. I write with the intent that what I share will make a positive difference.

I’ve appreciated cards from longtime readers who took the time to say thank you and those who’ve told me that I gave them the words they needed to get through the hardest times in their lives. I’ve kept the letter from a mother who wrote that an article on hope helped her understand her son and find peace when he died from cancer.

One young man wrote how my series on finding our calling gave him the courage to leave his job, go back to school and do what he was really meant to do. He became an inspiration to those around him who noticed how much happier he had become.

When I’ve given public education talks for nonprofit groups, I’ve been moved by faithful readers who tell me that they’ve saved every column I wrote and sent their favourites to loved ones.

This summer, I came to question my own writing routine but not because I was about to start my third decade. Recently, this newspaper published three very negative letters to the editor. They read as personal attacks from people I had never met.

They conveyed a meanness of spirit that negated the spirit of my own writing.

It made me question why I wrote for the paper. With reflection over the past month, I realized that I don’t write for any newspaper. I write for my readers.

I write to share practical perspectives that can help others negotiate challenges to their wellbeing, improve their relationships, negotiate the health care system and inspire them to achieve their positive potential for health and happiness.

Rockwater Secret Cove Resort offers home comforts in a tent

HALFMOON BAY, B.C.—When it rains, you can sit in your tent and listen to the patter of drops on the canvas, look out through the flap at the water dripping from the trees and pretend you’re camping deep in the forest.

But instead of having lumpy ground under you, you’re lying in a queen-sized bed with 220-thread-count sheets. When you get up you walk on a heated slate floor. Instead of going days without a proper wash your intent choices are a rainforest shower or a hydrotherapy tub. You’re still in a tent, but it’s a 43-square-metre tent that costs $80,000.

And when you leave it for something to eat, instead of cranking up the gas stove, you walk five minutes through the forest along an elevated boardwalk to a four-star dining room overlooking the ocean. I forgot to mention the tents also have flush toilets and free wi-fi. If this is your sort of camping, thank scotch.

The idea for these tents—13 of them, strung through the forest on a rocky point of land, connected by a 900-metre raised walkway—came to Kevin Toth while imbibing a tasty single malt. Toth, who’d been a general manager at Fairmont hotels, doodled the design for the tents on a napkin. He was looking for a way to jazz up Lord Jim’s, a 55-year-old fishing and hunting lodge he and some others had purchased in 2004 on B.C.’s Sunshine Coast, 20 kilometres north of Sechelt. (From Vancouver, by car and ferry, it takes about two hours to get here.)

“It needed a hug and a half,” when they bought it, says Karen Maxwell, Toth’s sister-inlaw. It hadn’t been updated in a half-century and there were still moose heads on the walls.

The new owners renovated the existing 11 cabins and the 14 rooms in the lodge itself, cleaned the 13-metre pool, erected the tents, improved the restaurant and renamed the whole thing Rockwater Secret Cove Resort.

Maxwell, now the resort’s director of business development, added a spa.

At Rockwater Secret Cove Resort you can stay in a tent, but it’s a 43-square-metre tent photo John Masters that costs $80,000.

The moose heads may be gone, but vestiges of the past linger, most notably in the spectral presence of Ole, the former owner, who can sometimes be seen on the steps between the lounge and the dining room. “He’s not scary,” says Maxwell. “He always has a smile on his face. He had a really good time here.”

Another notable, more corporeal, visitor is Joni Mitchell. She lived in Cabin 11 for a year while her house was being built a couple of kilometres away, and stops in for a meal or a massage occasionally.

To help ensure the resort’s tranquillity, only adults are allowed in the tents. But even though they’re well spaced, their walls are still canvas, and sound carries. Also, the Rockwater has become very popular for weddings. If you want silence, or something close, best to avoid those days. Otherwise, it’s pretty much everything some of us think camping ought to be.

It’s a sad day for the linguists and wordophiles at K&K. According to an article at the online magazine Slate, the killjoys at the Concise Oxford English Dictionary are adding a crap load of new words to its 12th edition while removing 200 out of date ones to make room. Some of the 400 new fangled words include noob, nurdle, retweet, woot, mankini, jeggings, sexting, slow food and upcycle.

Fair enough. We’ll accept mankini, sexting and jeggings, since all three have become a vital part of our daily lives. But the words left on the Concise Oxford Dictionary’s cutting room floor are more troubling, and not just because they read like a page torn from our Scratch ‘n Sniff sticker-adorned high school dream journal.

Words getting the boot include glocalization, millennium bug, threequel, video jockey and cassette player. All of which begs the question: How is that cassette player gets the shaft while “fanny pack” lives on, wreaking havoc on middle-aged men the world over?

If there’s a bright side to this story, it’s that the Concise OED is just that—concise—while the

traditional and considerably larger Oxford English Dictionary is more reluctant to throw words on the trash heap of history just so it can shack up with some pretty little whore of a word that’s going to be gone in a month or two anyway.

And isn’t that what our forefathers and foremothers fought so hard for? A world where mankinis and cassette players don’t have to be at odds with one another, but can live in harmony, celebrated for their differences, and if the setting is right, and with enough alcohol, share one creepy, jegging and fanny pack-filled night together.

Oh, B.C. Ferries, why do you torment us so?

The waterlogged Crown corporation, which was privatized by the Campbell government in 2003, is apparently leaking money to the tune of $5.5 million in its first quarter this year, and may be forced to lay off employees and cut 400 sailings on major routes starting this fall.

“Times are tough,” according B.C. Ferries CEO David Hahn, although they’re not particularly tough for Hahn, who pulls in an annual salary of $1.2 million and will receive a $315,000 annual

Ferries while slumped over a Sunshine Breakfast, dumping quarter after quarter into the Street Fighter arcade game and spending many a vibrating minute in those vinyl massage chairs, so we think we can offer insight into why B.C. Ferries’ fortunes are sinking.

First off, there was a time when the B.C. Ferries routes had set, easy-to-memorize schedules. Now they seem to change every other month, with staggered sailings to maximize ridership, while in reality, it creates an unsure, inconsistent ridership.

Second, the price. Sure it’s cheaper than ferries in Europe, but B.C. Ferries’ tendency to hike prices every six months, coupled with the ridiculous reservation fee system, makes travel too costly.

And lastly, before privatization, B.C. Ferries was widely regarded, and treated, as an extension of the province’s highway system. Do we treat highways as a “for profit” enterprise? Not at all.

But as a corporate entity, B.C. Ferries now must cut service to turn a profit. Cutting its CEO’s and executive board’s astronomical salaries and pensions to turn a profit? Not so much.

Another quintessential West Coast experience finds us headed south, across the Arthur Laing Bridge to the Flying Beaver Bar & Grill (4760 Inglis Drive, 604273-0278) on the Fraser’s Middle Arm. The Beaver combines duties as the “go-to” airport pub (ideal for meeting folks between flights, who don’t have time to head downtown) with its role as Harbour Air’s float plane terminus.

Indulgent business lunches may be a thing of the past but nothing compares to the lure of C Restaurant’s shoreside patio (1600 Howe St., 604-681-1164), which appeals equally to shade seekers and sun worshippers, budding tycoons or not. C’s smart, black parasols keep you as cool as a proverbial cucumber while perusing an impressive range of lunchtime offerings, including a tempting chefs’ “Business Menu” (four courses for $35). The Hired Belly has donned sunscreen and shorts to selflessly perform more deck research. We’d be foolish to pretend there’s not a surfeit of worthy real estate for consideration, but this particular trio of contrasting über-patios rarely disappoints—and we figure there’s still enough summer left to enjoy them.

One can’t help but wonder what sort of impact the late fall arrival of the contentious new Cactus Club will have on the Boathouse at English Bay (1795 Beach Ave., 604-669-2225), king among beachside decks since it started, replacing the long vanished English Bay Café in the late ’80s.

We go mainly for the setting, but the drinks (good beer and cocktail specials) and the food are both serviceable and dished with a smile. Beware of busy weekends however, when the bartenders apparently can’t keep up the pace. We waited a good 20 minutes for our pints of Stanley Park Amber the other day—which had us wondering if they were being shipped from the brewery (which is located on Annacis Island).

They might want to brush up before CC lands across the street.

If there is a silver lining, however, it’s the anticipation of luxurious and cozy fall fashions. The Courier consulted designers from the stylish enclaves of Gastown and Main Street to get the forecast.

• Treana Peake, creative director, Obakki, 44 Water St. Peake sees bold colours, polka dots, ’60s styling, vintage lace, tiny florals, embellishments, prints and plaids dominating the fall fashion scene.

Inspired by old Paris, Obakki focused on opulent fabrics for fall 2011, including fine Japanese lace and delicate Italian silk with angora and mohair accents.

The fall collection includes the black, bodyhugging, long-sleeved be-zippered “Grace” dress made with stretch silk, wool panelling and lace, the short white “Brigitte” jacket made of downy soft angora, and the silk, kneelength, double V-neck “Brooke” dress with its understated custom abstract floral print. To complicate the chances of a designated diamond, the league’s three different age groups play on different sized fields. Peewee (kids aged 13 and 14) play on 70-foot base paths with a 220-foot outfield,

while Bantam play on 80-foot base paths and Midget use 90-foot base paths, the same as the Vancouver Canadians at Nat Bailey Stadium and all Major League teams.

Five high-profile medals at Provincial and Western Canadian Champi-

onships cap off a successful season of fundraising.

“We had 30 sponsors this year, growing from only six a few year ago,” said Robyn Robinson, a volunteer who operates like the league’s executive director and is married to the president.

“We’ve really worked hard on developing our league,” she said, taking time to thank sponsors and acknowledge the “wonderful young men” she has the privilege of supporting.

The AAA Bantam and Midget Vancouver Mounties finished their season with three silver medals, bringing in hardware from the provincial tournament and the Western Canadian Championships.

The AA Bantam team hauled in two gold medals, one each at Provincials and the regional western finals.

The season-champion AAA Bantam roster, with players aged 14 and 15, earned the best B.C. regular-season record with 33 wins and six losses. Although they’d beaten the Victoria Eagles in all four meetings this season, the Mounties fell 8-5 to the Island team at Provincials. “We were beaten on that day by a better team,” said head coach Ted Pawlick.

“The main thing is to provide development for youth to play baseball at a high level.”

The number of cyclists continues to grow. In 2006, four per cent of commuting trips were done by bike, according to StatsCan. Smart money knows that percentage has increased significantly in the past five years given the bike-friendly environmental missives of the current city council. Indeed, the city estimates more than 3,500 commuters take their bike downtown every morning, a number that has tripled since 1994.

Coverage of cycling issues, developments, personalities and racing events by Courier reporters persists as some of the most well-read stories in the newspaper and online. To bring you more cycling news and in-

formation each week, we’re proud to introduce two new columnists who will write exclusively about cycling: Kay Cahill and Kristina Bangma.

Cahill is a passionate and knowledgeable urban cycle commuter (she takes to the B.C. wilderness to ride and race for adventure’s sake) who rides 365 days a year, barring snowflakes, to her post at the downtown public library and other branches around the city. For pure pleasure, she’ll take a small detour home—around the 10-kilometre seawall. Cahill, who came to Vancouver from the U.K. seven years ago, also helps her co-workers build their own comfort level by showing up at their home in the morning to ride with them as they get acquainted with commuter cycling. I’m stirred by her dedication, knowledge and own anecdotes

from the asphalt.

Bangma is an astounding athlete with major jock credentials. Named a Canadian triathlete of the year, the Vancouverite is also a personal trainer and coach. She exercises up to 20 hours a week and then also breaks a sweat with clients and against competitors. Bangma’s list of competitive accomplishments is impressive and she aims to share her enthusiasm, intensity and commitment with those around her. I’m thrilled to learn more from her expertise.

Bangma will write about the athletic aspects of cycling, including racing, training, fitness and health. Her first column appears in today’s Courier on page 30. Cahill will discuss the urban aspect of cycling in Vancouver.

After Little League with Dunbar, Little Mountain, Kerrisdale, Jericho, Hastings Park or South Vancouver clubs, teenage baseball players sign on with Vancouver Community Baseball to play recreational ball or advance to the elite AAA Mounties.

The amateur sports league for boys and girls aged 13 to 18 counts Hillcrest Park as the location of three home diamonds, but none of the 280 players on 22 Peewee, Bantam and Midget teams play at a designated Vancouver ballpark. In other words, they share their outfield with soccer, rugby, ultimate and cricket games at various times of the year.

In the meantime, the club’s president and a staff of dedicated volunteers meticulously tend to their diamonds, particularly the infields which they’ve laid with eye-catching red shale.

“The day-to-day maintenance, from weed-whacking all the fencing to cutting the infields, cleaning out the dugouts and painting. It’s all the time,” said Bill Robinson. “We take it on as an internal project for our league. It just works very well that way with the park board. They lend a hand when we need specialty things like a pitching backstop and to extend fences.”

If you are still reading, you’re probably one of the 7,000 people anticipating Sept. 10, the day you find out if your training has paid off.

Since you’ve put in so much work to get this far, the following tips will help you make the most of your training.

It’s now two weeks from the race and you may be panicking because you still haven’t ridden Cypress or cycled more than 100 kilometres or, or, or...

I’m sorry to tell you this, but two weeks before the event is too late to start and the worst thing you can do at this point is over-train.

By cramming in last-minute training, you are sure to arrive at the start line feeling fatigued as your muscles try to repair and recover.

You can make the most of whatever fitness you have today by waking up the morning of the Gran Fondo feeling refreshed and ready to ride.

For the next 15 days, keep your workouts short and easy. Taper down the miles.

Eat and sleep well. Consider this your new training plan for the next two weeks.

Two: Eat the right food at the right time

As soon as the gun goes off and before you clip into your pedals, start your watch with a preset alarm that goes off every 40 to 45 minutes. When the alarm goes off, eat.

Even if you’re not hungry and especially when you are, eat! Your body becomes depleted of glycogen stores within an hour, meaning you may not feel hungry but if you don’t replace these stores, your performance will decrease rapidly. Dizziness, fatigue, irritability and slight confusion are all signs that you are low and need to refuel—and needed to do so at least 10 minutes earlier.

the wine, pizza and all the other goodies available at a gourmet feast. But when you start the climb out of Squamish, your legs will be screaming for oxygen-rich blood, which instead will be busy digesting your lunch.

Three: Hydrate

If you are eating every 45 minutes, you are drinking every 15. As a general rule, you should be consuming at least one litre of water for every hour on the bike. If you are a heavy sweater or if it’s a hot day, you should also be replacing electrolytes through some form of salt tablet or an electrolyte replacement drink such as ELoad, Heed, Cytomax, Gatorade or Vega Sport Optimizer.

Four: Ride within your ability

My last bit of technical advice is to relax and whenever you’re faced with the choice, choose safety over speed. With 7,000 bikes on the road, and cyclists with their own agendas and race plans, a crash can become disastrous for everyone involved and not worth the five minutes you may lose to avoid an accident.

Five: Look around

Of course, it is easy to forget why you signed up for this ride in the first place!

Off-road adventurer meets luxury vehicle

Royal-approved Land Rover no longer toils in the trenches davidchao Having toiled in the trenches as the British equivalent to a Jeep, these days Land Rover has become the “all that-money-can-buy” machine for those who live or want to adopt the off-road adventurer role. What’s more, it comes with a royal stamp of approval.

The LR4 is a mid-range Land Rover with a $60,000-plus price tag and seating for up to seven passengers. Upgrades last year included an all new powertrain, plus interior and chassis refinements. Land Rover follows up, for the 2011 model year, with enhancements to its already outstanding Terrain Response system, reconfigured option packages and a new Vision Assist Package.

Its 5.0-litre V8 engine has a deep, diecast oil pan to take extreme tilting angles and the belt drives, alternator, air-conditioning compressor, power steering pump and starter are all waterproof. Use of 5W-

20 semi-synthetic oil is recommended and it extends service intervals to 24,000 km or 12 months.

The new V8 can develop 375 hp and 375 lbs.-ft. of torque, yet still meets ultra low emissions vehicle requirements. And it can power the LR4 from zero to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds.

High torque is provided across most of the engine’s speed range and this helps make the LR4 a pretty good tow vehicle.

Its maximum towing capacity rating is 3500 kg, for a trailer with brakes.

The V8 is coupled to a six-speed CommandShift automatic transmission, which offers Normal, Sport and Manual shift modes. Power goes to all four wheels through an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case. The low range can be engaged while moving (below 40 km/ hour).

The LR4 comes with what’s probably the most user-friendly four-wheel-drive system on the market, Land Rover’s Terrain Response System (TRS).

This state-of-the-art system has five settings: Highway, Grass/ Gravel/Snow, Mud/ Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl. All the driver has to do is make the right selection and the system chooses the appropriate 4x4 settings and adjusts the suspension height.

New additions to TRS include Hill Start Assist and Gradient Acceleration Control, which helps maintain downhill speeds on rough or slippery terrain when Hill Descent Control isn’t set. The LR4 almost drives itself.

My test Land Rover LR4 came with the HSE Lux Package ($10,800), which comes with a standard rear-view camera and headlights with LED Signature Lighting.

seats in the rear that expand seating capacity to seven. While not as cosy as the other seating positions there was enough room for an adult to ride in reasonable comfort.

They’re a bit awkward to erect and access, but fold perfectly flat when not in use.

Safety: The Vision Assist Package includes Automatic High Beam Assist. This system automatically switches on the headlights in low light conditions and automatically switches to the low beams to avoid dazzling drivers in on-coming vehicles.

Five digital cameras make up the optional Surround Camera System and relay images to a dash mounted touch-screen.

The driver has a number of view selections and can even zoom in or out. It’s designed to make the LR4 easier to park, hook up a tow hitch or manoeuvre off-road.

The Drive: The air suspension in the LR4 is a great feature. Its highway ride is particularly impressive and yes, you do feel like you’re floating on air. It defies the laws of physics in a corner, as the tall body stays more level than is logically possible, and it has an easy-entry/exit feature that drops the LR4 to its lowest possible ride height.

You sit tall in the driver’s seat of the LR4 and a conveniently extra wide and flat window ledge is at elbow level. All-round vision is particularly good and in addition to the camera features already mentioned, the power side mirrors automatically tilt down when reversing to make it easier to see a curb or parking stall lines.

The made-in-U.K. Land Rover LR4 is still known in most of the world as the Land Rover Discovery. In the marketplace it competes with the likes of Acura MDX, Audi Q7, BMW X5 and the MercedesBenz GL, and where the pavement ends it’s the leader.

The Looks: The tall two-box shape is mostly about function over style, yet it’s distinctively Land Rover. The clamshell hood, a stepped roofline, blacked-out roof supports and side air vents in the front fenders have become signature features of the brand.

The large amount and height of the glass area and the wrap-over third side windows are additional styling traits that are common to Land Rover models. My test LR4 also came with three glass roof panels and the combined effect is an interior that fills with natural light.

The stepped-design rear hatch is a twopiece door opening with a smaller dropdown tailgate that can act as an extended loading floor.

The Inside: Passengers sit tall in the LR4 and have an expansive view of the world outside. The interior appointments are high-quality, but durable and designed for all-weather usage. Bluetooth phone connectivity is a new standard feature.

Continued from page 37 Considering its size the LR4 is a very easy vehicle to park. In addition to its good sight lines and electronic parking aids, it has a surprisingly tight turning circle that’s about the same as a compact car.

The LR4 HSE has the same extra-large (36 cm/ front) four-piston calliper disc brake system as the Range Rover Sport. The stopping power is excellent and they are designed to work after being driven through deep water.

While fuel economy is not great, it’s no surprise given the LR4’s weight (2567 kg/5617 lb) and large displacement engine. Other than that, it’s hard to fault the silky smooth 5.0-litre V8 as it’s an impressively quiet and powerful performer.

The Score: A classy and technically sophisticated SUV, the Land Rover LR4 possesses exceptional offroad capability, yet it’s also a pleasure to drive, or ride in, on a paved highway.
