But some complained that sand and sandbags were not provided sooner.

Chilliwack man will spend the next six months in jail for causing a 2010 highway accident that seriously injured a teenage driver of another car.

Neil McKinnon had pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving causing bodily harm in connection with the crash, which occurred Aug. 10, 2010, on Highway 1 near Herrling Island.

In sentencing submissions Thursday, Supreme Court justice William Grist heard that McKinnon—on his way to Hope to comfort a friend whose daughter had just died—was driving at a high rate of speed and frequently changing lanes in his 2005 Pontiac Vibe.

He was speeding in the passing lane when a car pulled in front of him to pass another, slower vehicle. McKinnon, unable to slow in time to avoid the vehicle in front of him, swerved into the grassy median and around the car ahead.

He lost control and his vehicle swerved right. The car continued into the highway’s slow lane, where it collided with a 2007 Toyota Yaris driven by 18-year-old Leanne Diewold.

Both cars left the road. While McK innon escaped mostly unscathed, Diewold suffered a number of injuries, including a broken rib, a broken hip, a broken clavicle, a concussion and visible scarring.

efore the heroic events of last Thursday took place, before the flames and the smoke took hold of his Unsworth Road trailer, Jan (Jo) Stroomer and his pet Chihuahua Ben were pretty much inseparable.

Stroomer, 76, is a senior; Ben, aged either 15 or 16, was just plain old. Every night Stroomer would chop Ben’s food up into little pieces so his toothless companion could scarf down his meal.

At 10 p.m., Stroomer would give Ben a pair of date cookies. A couple hours later Stroomer and his wife would settle down for the night, Ben sleeping peacefully between them.

Stroomer figures Ben may have also been senile. Sometimes, after being let outside to do what dogs do outside, he would start barking at the wrong house, waiting to be let in.

Fire officials still don’t know what caused last Thursday’s blaze.

As usual, Stroomer had taken a sleeping pill around midnight. The pill usually puts him out for around four hours.

So when Ben began scratching at him around 2 a.m., Stroomer brushed off his buddy.

“No, Ben, it’s too early,” he remembers telling his dog.

Jan Stroomer But Ben was insistent.

“All of a sudden he bit me, which he never did,” Stroomer told the Times.

“He snapped me out of it and I couldn’t see my hands in front of me. So I grabbed the wife and I said, ‘Outside!

Outside! Fast!”

Stroomer helped his wife, Elaine, outside through a side door. Then he went back inside for his dog. In hindsight, he thinks that Ben may have followed him out with Elaine, but then re-entered the burning building alongside his owner.

“As soon as I went back into the hallway, it was like one wall of flames came towards me. I jumped back but I think that’s when he got it.”

“I couldn’t find him. It hurts. I tried,” he said, choking back tears.

Stroomer was forced out of his house and had to watch as the trailer and all his possessions—including his citizenship papers—went up in flames. The couple’s cat also died in the fire.

But the loss of the trailer, which was

insured, is secondary to Stroomer.

“It was devastating, I tell you. Not the fire too much. It was devastating that that little dog gave his life for me and my wife.”

Stroomer uses the word hero without reservation to describe Ben. “He is my hero, I tell you,” Stroomer said. “If it wasn’t for him, another three minutes and we would have been gone.”

Stoomer says he and his wife will buy a new trailer. And in the living room, he has pledged to mount a large photo of Ben, with the word “Hero” in big letters.

“We made it, but he didn’t and I’ll never forget him, that’s for damn sure.”

Four years ago, Stroomer took Ben to a veterinarian.

“The vet says, about four years ago, ‘I’m amazed that he’s still alive,’” he remembered. Stroomer told her that he simply spoiled the dog rotten.

Ben repaid that kindness with his life.

“I told them, when they find him I want his body because I want to bury it. I don’t want it to be dumped somewhere because he means too much to me,” Stroomer said.

“He was my buddy. When they say, a dog is a man’s best friend, I tell you, they better mean it, because they’ll go through hell for you.”

Chilliwack man died Sunday after crashing his motorcycle in Oregon.

Oregon State Police say 60-year-old William Clifford Hallsworth was travelling in a group of six motorcycles along Highway 37 in northeastern Oregon when the crash occurred.

Police say Hallswor th was travelling northbound when his 2000 Moto Guzzi “traveled onto the lip of the asphalt edge” of the highway. Hallsworth tried to return to the road, but he lost control and was ejected from the bike. Both the bike and Hallsworth came to rest in a wheat field alongside the highway.

He was taken to St. Anthony Hospital where, despite wearing a protective helmet and full riding gear, Hallswor th was pronounced dead.

The investigation into the crash is continuing.

Kent inmate slashes face of female guard

A

female corrections officer at Kent Institution in Agassiz had her face badly slashed in an attack by an inmate wielding a homemade knife.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital after the Saturday afternoon attack.

According to Gord Robertson, president of the Pacific region of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers, the guard will be badly disfigured.

“An inmate slashed her on her face quite severely,” he said. “It was basically down the whole side of her face, it was a severe cut and very deep.”

Robertson said it was unclear why the inmate attacked the officer.

Kent, a maximum security federal prison, has been in lockdown since the incident. It follows the slashing of another officer on Thursday, said Robertson.

In that slashing, a guard was cut in the arm by a homemade weapon.

Robertson believes the knife in the latest attack was made out of a razor blade.

“We have no idea why,” he said.

“It was completely random. We have heard it was a planned attack on any correctional officer.”

Robertson said the violence highlights tension inside the prison due to overcrowding and work conditions.

“It has been quite tense for the correctional officers there for quite some time,” he said.

McKinnon—who was arrested at the scene—immediately expressed remorse, telling an RCMP officer: “I made a mistake, I f----- up.”

McKinnon was also charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm following the accident, but that charge was stayed after his guilty plea to the dangerous driving charge.

His lawyer, Brian Juriloff told the court his client had consumed alcohol the night before the accident occurred but was not impaired at the time of the crash.

Juriloff asked for a three-month jail sentence, to be served on weekends. Blessin asked Grist for a 12to 18-month sentence.

Before being sentence, McKinnon told Grist, “I would like to apologize to the victim and her family for sure, and my family as well, for all the bull s--- I put them through over the last 20 months.”

In 1996, McKinnon was convicted of drinking and driving. Grist said that conviction, while occurring in the relatively distant past, was an aggravating factor. He also noted the “long-term effect” the crash has had on Diewold, who has mostly recovered from her injuries but continues to suffer some physical and psychological effects.

In addition to the six months in jail, McKinnon was also sentenced to one year of probation and prohibited from driving for three years.

The trust—which allegedly belongs to Carrington’s wife Rita—intended to roll the assets into a shell company and take the company public on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. It would then provide Carrington stock in the proposedGoldenTrunkMines, according to Baines’ article.

The Abbotsford promoter then, claiming the share price would double, said he’d gift shares to his former WebNet investors at the rate of $1 worth of stock for every $1 they had lost in his former company.

The shares were free to investors, except for “legal and transfer fees” equal to five per cent on the first $50,000 worth of shares, three per cent on the next $50,000 and one per cent on anything over that amount.

The money was to be wired to Carrington’s account at the Bank of America in Sumas, Wash., just across the border from Abbotsford, wrote Baines.

In February 2011, just before the Golden Trunk Mine venture, the B.C. Securities Commission slapped Carrington with a 20-year trading ban for his activities as CEO of WebNet Converged Wireless Network Ltd., which offered wireless high-speed Internet services in downtown Abbotsford and Chilliwack in 2007.

At that time, Carrington said the local networks were just the beginning.

“Chilliwack and the Fraser Valley represent the second area that we have announced

publicly since we began building out our nationwide network in Canada and the United States,” Carrington said in 2007. “The success that we have had in the Abbotsford and Chilliwack area is just the tip of the iceberg..”

Carrington admitted responsibility forWebNet and four other related companies that made illegal distributions to Canadian and U.S. investors.

He raised $8.74 million from 916 investors on the basis of offering documents that were deficient and misleading. The ban prohibits Carrington from trading securities, taking on any significant position with activities in the securities market, or from engaging in investor relations.

BCSC spokesman Richard Gilhooley said if the commission’s ban is breached, it can pursue a criminal investigation.

Carrington, who is in custody in the North Fraser Pretrial Centre, was scheduled to make an appearance by video in Abbotsford provincial court yesterday morning to arrange a bail hearing.

However, Crown counsel Louisa Winn told the court the matter would have to be delayed as Carrington had been sent to hospital after reporting he was experiencing chest pain.

Tough year for teachers

T

eachers still love their jobs but they’re tired of fighting the government, said a handful of Chilliwack teachers who rallied near the corner of Luckakuck Way and Vedder Road last Wednesday.

“It’s felt like a long year because of all the things that have happened,” Fraser Valley Distance Education teacher Al Hubner said.

“It was tiring. It’s hard when you think you’re getting beaten down by the government and you’re just trying to do your job and you’re not respected. It’s hard on a lot of people.”

The small gathering of union faithful—holding signs with nowfamiliar slogans like “Kids matter, teachers care”—wrapped up a school-year of job action with more of a whimper than a bang.

“I feel tired. I’m tired of fighting.

I’m tired of struggling against a government that doesn’t listen to reason,” said Ed Klettke, a Chilliwack senior secondary teacher.

The teachers’ strike began in September after six months of failed negotiations between the B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA).

Teachers have been without a contract since last June and continue to push for higher wages,

better benefits and more say in the size and composition of their classes, while BCPSEA has stuck to the provincial government’s twoyear, net-zero mandate, which requires increases in public sector wages to be offset by cuts to other contract areas.

Since September, the strike has seen teachers refuse non-teaching duties, stage a full-blown threeday walkout and, when legislated back to work, withdraw from extra-curricular activities.

As a result, this school year has seen schools issue two sets of nearly blank reports cards, parents scramble to secure child care during the walkout, administrators and district executives supervise playgrounds and some student athletes lose out on their spring sports season.

Chilliwack Teachers’ Association president Katharin Midzain, however, is unapologetic.

“I’ve certainly heard lots of accusation about how difficult the union has made work in the schools this year,” she told the Times. “My answer to that is it’s not the union; it’s the government.”

Many teachers at Wednesday’s rally agreed.

“I feel like my voice isn’t being

heard by the government simply because they don’t want to hear it,” A.D. Rundle middle school teacher Lee-Anne Clarke said. “I feel that the BCTF has done a great job of representing teachers in this province, but I feel that the government doesn’t want to negotiate.”

Although teachers have achieved few concrete gains over the past year, Midzain said the labour dispute has renewed teachers’ sense of purpose and driven home to the public all the things teachers usually do for free.

Going into the summer, however, she called the lack of clear direction about what teachers will be facing in the fall “troubling,” and wouldn’t say whether the corner of Luckakuck and Vedder had seen the last of teacher rallies until the BCTF and BCPSEA have hammered out a deal.

“I have absolutely no idea where we’ll be in September,” she said.

“I don’t have a crystal ball, but teachers will always be willing to demonstrate and show their passion for the need for a solid, wellfunded public education system.

So, if it means that we have to get out on the street and demonstrate, we’ll do that.”

Good news for students Funding for playground at Bernard

ids at Bernard elementary will be sliding, swinging and climbing on a new playground sooner than expected thanks to a $50,000 infusion of playground funding from the provincial government.

The school’s Parent Advisory Council had already begun fundraising for a new playground when the school got the news this week.

“Now it’ll make it possible to get it in quicker and maybe put a few more components in,” said Bernard principal Janine McCurdy.

“It’ll be exciting for our school.”

McCurdy said the new playground could now be installed as early as this summer, making it ready for the start of the new school year.

It will replace an old wooden structure currently on the school grounds.

The $50,000 going to Benard was part of a $3.3 million funding announcement made by Education Minister George Abbott last Thursday that will see 80 schools across the province get money to repair, improve and replace their playgrounds.

It’s the third and final phase of an $8 million playground funding commitment made by the province last September.

Rosedale traditional community school and Vedder middle receive $50,000 each for new equipment.

Parent Advisory Councils at three other local schools were reimbursed for playground equipment they replaced through their own fundraising efforts. FG Leary fine arts got $7,500, McCammon traditional $25,000 and Tyson elementary $30,000.

Chilliwack MLA John Les was at Benard elementary Tuesday morning to present the funds for the school’s new playground.

The big price paid for wee ones

T

he baby’s heart quieted a third time and we knew the night had taken a turn.

Three doctors hunched above ribbons of paper pumping from a monitor that told them what everyone in the delivery room feared: contractions were gaining strength while the little one lost his.

Twenty-two hours after the first thigh-clutching cramp released the roller coaster’s brake, we were crowned with hairnets, then masks and scrubs, quickly shuttled into the operating room.

Surgery. Her first-born refusing to drop into position, not that the half-shut cervix would allow passage if he did.

A short chip-shot down the hall sat big sister, soft tears tumbling past her cool new (red) thickrimmed glasses.

Fourteen and a half years between kids is an awfully long time.

Long enough to never meet great-grandparents.

Long enough to find and fumble love – then unearth it again.

Long enough to see the heartbreak of friends lose babies.

Pointed towards a stool short enough to keep me slightly higher than mom’s chattering teeth I was promised nothing more than a pillow if I fainted, and the doctors set to work.

Settling on a last name wasn’t going to be the hard part after all.

That last total is lower likely in large part to our superior health care and lower Prairie living costs (it should also be noted boys are considered a slightly more expensive investment, thanks in large part to higher food bills; which is not yet an issue at our place, thanks to mama’s milk).

For now, let’s put MA’s number in perspective: $191,665 gets you into a few townhouses in Abbotsford (median price in May was $266,250), or something a little nicer in Mission ($213,000).

Happy with your current place?

How about a 2011 Ferrari California, or a four-bedroom, three-bath vacation home in Phoenix, or a Gold History Edition iPad cover made of Ammolite?

All three cost $192,000—the same as my boy.

And while I’d love to slam through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with 460 horses arching to 310 km/h, you should’ve seen the face three-week-old Callum made the other day.

By pulling them up with oldman forehead wrinkles, he opened his eyes and curled plump lips into a winsome smile—and I swear when I whispered his name he turned my way with sparkling baby blues three shades lighter than they’d been the day before.

Then he peed on me.

Despite the many avenues of communication available today, and on so many different levels, it remains a truism that the community paper is the best and most effective source of community news and information—the glue that holds a community together.

Despite the terabytes of information that are uploaded to the Internet daily through websites, blogs, social media, and personal mobile communications; despite the hundreds of television channels, the multi-band dispersal of radio, and the multitude of regional, national, and international newspapers, magazines, and newsletters available to all of us—or perhaps because of the seemingly infinite variety of information sources—the best place to find out about Chilliwack still is the Chilliwack Times.

It’s the only thing we can do better than anyone else—and no information source can be better at it than we are.

It’s what we are—who we are. It’s the embodiment of the philosophy behind the Glacier Media Group that purchased the Chilliwack Times and our sister community newspapers six months ago.

But regardless of how obvious that seems to us, it’s also pretty obvious that we have a vested interest in that message —which is why we’re pleased at the vote of confidence in community newspapers that was delivered by Warren Buffett a couple of weeks ago.

Buffett, whose financial genius is generally recognized to be his ability to spot the obvious before nearly everyone else realizes how obvious it is, commented, “In towns and cities where there is a strong sense of community, there is no more important institution than the local paper.”

And he put his money where his mouth is, purchasing 63 American community newspapers for $143 million.

Buffett didn’t get to be a multi-billionaire for nothing. The obvious has been stated by someone with a habit of being heard.

You take your chances living outside of the dike Editor: The people who bought properties outside the dike should not get money from the City of Chilliwack if they are flooded.

They signed a form about no coverage in the flood area when they purchased this land cheaper.

In the 1887 flood, our family lost everything they owned and got no reimbursement from the city. Also, a family member drowned trying to save the cattle. To me a bunch of trees does not seem so bad when a life was lost.

I say just grin and bear it as our family had to do. They knew the problems when they purchased that land. If cheap land has a problem, you must fix it yourself not burden the taxpayer.

Now I read your article entitled “Return of the city colour cops,” Chilliwack Times, June 19. This is so unfortunate. When will the city realize that sometimes if bright colours are done tastefully, they will add charm and character to our city.

Hopefully, the Wildcat can make a go of it without their eye-catching building that has definitely drawn customers in. Otherwise, we will be back to the old empty eyesore on Vedder Road.

But hey, at least that vacancy would be in city-approved colours.

Mark has the advantage of his father’s advice on ways to achieve the most benefit from Ottawa’s trough.

However, what will always stick in my craw most is the manipulative way in which Chuck’s son succeeded him in this riding. But the buck stops with the voters—who did not want to let the responsibility rest with the remainder of the country for voting in a majority government.

Who lets you stay alive so you can do with your body whatever you want. Your heart stops and you become dust.

We are very much not in control of our bodies. Even a high temperature puts us down. We are very dependant on the one who lets us live, without that we are nothing.

Even in the first trimester it is a living human being growing inside me, and I have no right to kill it.

If it is not a person, why if a pregnant woman gets killed is the killer charged with two murders?

I feel sorry for people who think they have all the controls, when in reality we are nothing on our own.

No one alone can control their bodies it is all in the hands of the one that created us and lets us live.

Run organizers hit with heavy losses

ocal Terry Fox Run organizers are feeling the loss of two longtime volunteers over the last year, including one to cancer.

Their passing has left big shoes to fill, and organizers are now looking for two or three new volunteers to take their place on the organizing committee.

“Normally we could handle it with the committee members we have,” main volunteer organizer Margaret Kostrzewa told the Times, “but with these two people, they did a lot.”

The committee needs a new secretary, Kostrzewa said, as well

Terry Fox organizers hoping to replace crucial volunteer spots for this year’s local event

as a couple new volunteers to do odd jobs, like dropping off letters and helping with registration.

The annual Terry Fox Run began 32 years ago, inspired by Terry Fox’s unfinished cross-Canada Marathon of Hope to raise funds for cancer research.

Since then, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $600 million dollars for the cause.

Last year about 200 local runners and walkers participated in the Chilliwack event, raising about $14,000.

“He will be there, and I’m sure he’ll even sign hats and shirts and stuff,” Kostrzewa said.

That was down from previous years, and Kostrzewa said she hopes this year’s figure will be closer to $20,000, as it has been in the past.

She would also like to see more families at the event, taking in the pancake breakfast and live entertainment even if they don’t run or walk.

This year’s participants will also get a chance to meet Rolly Fox, Terry Fox’s father, who recently joined the local organizing committee and agreeed to attend the local event.

he jumps are ready to be installed in the ground at the new Island 22 Bike Park. The ground, alas, has disappeared, submerged like much of Island 22 under the floodwaters of the Fraser River.

Jay Hoots, whose company Hoots Inc. is in charge of building the bike park, is careful to note that the delays encountered by his company are relatively unimportant compared to the situation facing homeowners outside the dikes that ring Chilliwack.

But he does admit that Mother Nature has done his project no favours.

Flooding has stopped construction on the Island 22 Bike Park. The Fraser Valley Regional District had hoped the park would open in June.

Officials had hoped to have the bike park open at the beginning of June. But the weather has played havoc with planners’ schedules.

First builders had to deal with a wet spring that saturated the ground and made it difficult to work on the site. And just when the ground finally began to dry, the Fraser began to rise. And rise. And rise.

“All of a sudden, when we get momentum, there’s the flood,” Hoots

said Friday. Workers were at the site last week tying features to trees to make sure they didn’t float away in whatever flooding was to come.

“I’ve just been getting pictures in from my crew and we’re three feet under water right now,” he said.

Members of Hoots’ build team were in Chilliwack until last Thursday. While the bike park was off limits, the crew built several launch ramps at another site. Those features

are now ready for installation.

“We’ve got beautiful ramps sitting, ready to go into the ground,” he said.

Hoots told the Times that there is little to be done now until the waters recede and the ground dries, again.

“We need it to be dry enough that we can actually start creating elevation,” he said. “We’ll wait for the ground to harden up and keep moving forward.

hilliwack’s women’s seven-a-side women’s soccer league, the Rockers and Friends, will celebrate the end of their fifth season with its first allstar game Tuesday evening.

The best of the league’s 156 over-30 players will battle at Vedder middle school at 7 p.m. The event kicks off an hour earlier with several fundraisers in support of Raj Binning, a former player battling cancer.

The all-star game participants were chosen through a secret vote by all league players.

“I’ve seen so many awesome players on the various different teams, and I wanted to see what it would be like to have them all playing at once. I think it will be a very exciting game,” organizer Sue Klinck said.

More water still to come at the scene.

The hazelnut farm owner said they didn’t have sand until 10 p.m. Friday, nearly five hours after water breached the berm.

“It sucks when you have to start sandbagging as the water is coming up.”

The city did not respond before presstime Monday.

The Carey Point area is outside the city’s dike system, and was protected by a berm that held from 1997 until 2011, when it failed.

In a last-minute bid to protect the properties in May, Chilliwack MLA John Les came up with $25,000 from the provincial government, which was matched by the city. Property owners pitched in approximately $70,000 of their own money and built the berm themselves.

The structure runs on both

sides of Orchard Slough where the city paid $110,000 to build a check dam.

The high Fraser freshet— the result of extremely high snow packs, a late spring, and sudden warm weather and rain—has also led to water backing up in local waterways that feed the river, including the Vedder Canal and all the local streams and sloughs.

At Island 22 Park, the parking lot, equestrian area and under-construction bike park were inundated with water late last week and the park was closed to all traffic Friday.

The BC River Forecast Centre (BCRFC) reported that the main pulse from last week’s rainfall had moved through the Fraser River locally and water levels should hold steady until mid-week.

The 12 residents in three homes in the Carey Point area remain on evacuation order and residents in 39 other homes outside the protected area remain on evacuation alert. The city has put in place 24-hour security to prevent public access to the closed roads leading to the Carey Point area.

“With the current forecast, there is no concern that water will overtop the dike system,” the update said.

The city’s dike system is designed to protect up to 8.2 metres at Mission.

Miller, Frank James

January 4, 1930 – June 13, 2012 Frank passed away in his Chilliwack home after a brave effort to recover from a November 2010 accident that left him with severe burns. Born in Innisfail, Alberta, as a young man Frank moved to Richmond where he built his own home, worked as a lithographer, and raised a family with his first wife, Gloria (Watson).

After retiring, he moved to Chilliwack with his second wife, Annie May (Powell) and as snowbirds, they travelled each winter to their second home in El Centro, California. Frank was happiest outdoors, especially “up country” at his Horse Lake cabin near 100 Mile House. He is survived by his wife Annie May, daughters Sandra (Al) Gardiner and Patricia (Stan Guenther) Miller, sons, Robert (Gillian) Miller and Chris Miller, and 11 grandchildren.

Chilliwack Fire Department is gearing up for its 2012/13 Paid-On-Call Firefighters Recruitment drive. This year’s class is just around the corner, with the program commencing mid-October. Firefighters will be needed in all community fire halls.

Pedestrians & Vehicles Don’t Get Along Over the past 5 years there have been 1,700 incidents in the Lower Mainland involving pedestrians, and of those, 37 were fatal. It is important that drivers and pedestrians focus on their surroundings.

While it may appear that more emphasis is placed on driver behaviour, it is important for pedestrians to also be aware when walking in community traffic areas.
