In a press release, Janzen said that over recent weeks “there had been a growing concern over her run in the last federal election and she felt it had become a major distraction.”

Janzen stepped down from Chilliwack city council to run for the Liberals in May’s federal election.

She finished a distant third with just, 11 per cent of the vote behind New Democrat Gwen O’Mahony’s 26 per cent and, Conservative Mark Strahl’s 57 per cent.

uestions are being quietly raised about the $1.5-million contract awarded to Tourism Chilliwack to manage Chilliwack Heritage Park.

The two losing bidders for the contract aren’t saying much on the record, other than that there is more to the story.

“All I will say is that we are disappointed that we didn’t get the contract,” said Rod Hudson, executive director of the Chilliwack Community Arts Council (CCAC), the organization that has managed Heritage Park since 2001.

A request for proposals to manage the facility ended on Aug. 17 with three proponents: Tourism Chilliwack, CCAC, and Vancouverbased Projects on Purpose (POP).

The free and confidential volunteer designated driver service aims to combat drinking and driving by offering rides home.

Teams of three road volunteers pick up clients and drive them to their destination in their own vehicle. The service is available to anyone who does not feel fit to drive and clients can get from Harrison Hot Springs to Richmond.

This past weekend there were 53 rides given Friday night and 71 on Saturday.

There have been 218 safe rides to date, and there were 738 in the 2010 holiday season.

seven-year-old unpublished report indicates 100 per cent of a sample of Cultus Lake sockeye tested positive for a potentially deadly salmon virus.

The undated report (likely from 2004) produced at a Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) station in Nanaimo, tested wild Pacific salmon—sockeye, chinook and pink— from various locations, including Cultus Lake.

Twenty-two per cent of the salmon, or 117 out of more than 500 samples tested positive for ISA, with more than half of the positive tests from the Fraser River.

And more than half of all the positive test results came from the 64 out of 64 samples of Cultus Lake sockeye found with ISA virus.

While it is unclear why the report was shelved when it was first produced, co-author Molly Kibenge sent a Nov. 4 email to another coauthor asking permission to now submit the work for publication to a

“I would like to submit it to Diseases of Aquatic Organisms or Journal of Fish Diseases,” Kibenge wrote to Dr. Simon Jones. “What do you think?”

In an email that same day, Jones declined to give her permission, saying that DFO scientists disagreed with her results. He also said that the Cohen Commission was scheduled to reconvene in December to hear evidence on ISA virus in B.C. “I will wait to hear the outcome of these processes before further discussion on a seven-year-old manuscript,” Jones wrote.

The emails and the report were posted on an anti-salmon farm blogger’s site, superheroes4salmon.org.

On the site, the writer said the report was made available on Nov. 23 to participants in the Cohen Commission, the judicial inquiry looking into the decline of Fraser River sockeye salmon.

When asked Tuesday by a Seattle Times reporter, DFO declined to answer questions and issued a brief statement that said, in part: “Based on the best science available, it was concluded that her results had produced a false positive.”

Infectious Salmon Anemia virus (ISA) was in the news a month ago when federal officials said reports that the deadly virus was infecting Fraser River salmon were unfounded.

“There are no confirmed cases of ISA in wild or farm salmon in B.C.,” said Con Kiley, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s national aquatic animal health program director.

“There’s no evidence that it occurs in fish off the [coast] of B.C.” Earlier test results found 48 sockeye smolts tested positive for the deadly European strain of the virus, but DFO said the samples were degraded, rendering the conclusions useless, which is the same thing the

Groups opposed to the aquaculture industry in B.C. say the big questions are, if ISA is in the province, was it imported on salmon eggs by Norwegian-owned salmon farming companies? And what would happen if it got into fish farms, mutated and spread to wild populations?

Mary Ellen Walling, executive director for the B.C. Salmon Farmers Association, said her organization was “dismayed at the way campaigners used this to create fear about our operations.”

The 2004 report does not address the source of the ISA virus, including the question of whether it is linked to fish farms.

The Canadian government may be disputing the recent ISA test result, and the results from the 2004 study, but American politicians are acting.

Plum position for Plummer

he Chilliwack school district announced a pair of high-profile school administrator appointments last week.

The first principal of the brand new Rosedale traditional community school, scheduled to open Jan. 3, will be Helen Plummer, currently vice-principal at G.W. Graham middle-secondary.

Plummer came to School District No. 33 in 1997 after seven years of teaching in Coquitlam. She taught at Sardis secondary for three years before taking on her first administrative appointment (as vice-principal at Sardis) in 2000.

Plummer also served as vice-principal and acting principal at Vedder middle before taking the position at G.W. Graham in September.

Plummer said heading up the new school will be “an honour,” and she is thrilled with the new building, especially its use of natural light.

“It is spectacular,” she said. “There’s a view out of every window and there’s windows everywhere.”

Current Rosedale vice-principal Jeff Hanson will stay on as the new school’s vice-principal, while current principal Todd McLean will take over the principalship of G.W. Graham.

Chilliwack middle school’s new principal, meanwhile, will be current district vice-principal of human resources Aaron Parker.

Parker came to the district in 1999 to teach at Sardis secondary, but he’s no stranger to CMS, having served a year as vice-principal there at the beginning of his administrative career.

He served at Chilliwack secondary as viceprincipal from 2006 to 2010 until moving to the district office a year ago. “I’m delighted to be returning to CMS,” he said, “I’m going to have to adjust my hearing, though, because the decibel level at middle school is quite different than at the board office.”

Plummer’s and Parker’s appointments are both effective Jan. 1.

Pet found, but not coming back

A

Chilliwack woman whose Siberian husky was left tied up outside the Kamloops SPCA with purple-tinted fur won’t get the pet back because she’s under investigation for animal cruelty.

Violet the dog, as she is now known, is in foster care while the complicated investigation involving her is sorted out, Lorie Chortyk, B.C. SPCA general manager of community relations, said Friday.

She said Sheena Robson has been told she won’t be getting the husky back.

“If this was a normal situation, we’d be returning the dog immediately,” Chortyk said.

Violet was left tied on a short rope to a fence outside the SPCA shelter in Kamloops on Nov. 22. Her back was a purplish colour and she was malnourished and emaciated.

She had recently had puppies, but they were not with her.

Robson told The Kamloops Daily

News earlier this week the dog had been stolen from her home in late August while a friend was looking after her. She said she had filed a report with Mission RCMP. Marcie Moriarty, B.C. SPCA general manager of cruelty investigations, said in a press release Friday the society has taken eight dogs and seven cats from Robson’s property in the past few months due to animal cruelty complaints.

She said Robson runs a backyard breeding operation and dogs there have been found in poor conditions. The SPCA has been monitoring her animals since May. “On a recent recheck we found several animals in distress, including nursing mothers covered in fleas and a Yorkshire Terrier locked in a dark closet as well as unsanitary conditions throughout the house,” she said.

The case is still ongoing, but Moriarty said the SPCA will be recommending charges of cruelty against Robson.

Where Violet is concerned, however, the case gets more complicated. A couple known to Robson who brought Violet to Kamloops is also under SPCA investigation, Chortyk said.

A Chilliwack woman claims a Husky found in Kamloops last month was her stolen dog. But the SPCA says the woman is under investigation. at a property next to his, along with her nine puppies, two huskies and two smaller dogs.

Paul Clarke said a couple renting the house next to his showed up irregularly and didn’t feed all the animals. The huskies were outside most of time, while the others were inside.

to the couple and gave Clarke a key so he could care for the dogs.

“I discovered the dogs inside howling and yowling. The dogs were abandoned. They’ve been coming back at 2 a.m. every four days and putting food out for them.

But the ones inside, they weren’t getting food,” he said.

He found Violet and her puppies in a cupboard under some stairs inside.

“They’ve come three times in two weeks, late at night.”

He was concerned about the dogs’ welfare, but said the people who were caring for them claimed to be fostering some of them for the SPCA. The names the couple gave him are the same names that Robson gave to The Daily News earlier this week as the people who were caring for her dog during the summer.

Violet and her puppies disappeared Nov. 21, Clarke said. He didn’t know what had happened to her until he saw her photo in the newspaper.

The couple did return to take the rest of the dogs. Now they’re all gone, he said.

“They came Wednesday night and pulled down the SPCA notices and took the dogs. My concern now is were those two dogs (huskies) stolen and where are they? They’re in reasonably good shape because I’ve been feeding and watering them for the past month,” he said.

“Violet’s in good hands and she’s going to survive. But these two huskies—they were in good shape, I took them for a walk every day.

They listened to me well enough that I could let them off leash and they’d stay with me. . . . My concern right now is what happened to those two huskies.”

Gas funds fuel garbage project

Upgrades will mean better air and reduced emissions

L

ocal politicians announced Saturday that the federal Gas Tax Fund will dump $3.5 million into Chilliwack’s Bailey Landfill for environmental upgrades designed to improve local air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The money will finance the creation of a gas extraction system.

The project “will provide tremendous benefits in helping keep this region and our environment healthy, clean and strong,” said ChilliwackFraser Canyon MP Mark Strahl.

“I think for many people in our community, sometimes it’s out of sight out of mind and if you can’t see something immediately, it can’t be that bad,” added ChilliwackHope MLA Barry Penner.

“With the methane gas that’s escaping there, you don’t see it right away, but it does have a negative impact on air quality and it’s also a very powerful greenhouse gas.”

Gas from landfills comprises about five per cent of British Columbia’s greenhouse gas emissions. Construction on the system will begin in the new year and will eventually allow for the methane—which makes up around half of the gas created by the decay of material—to be piped to the surface and flared off, said city engineer David Blain.

“It’s a continuous process.

We’re always creating gas, we’re always taking it off and we’ll always be burning it,” said Blain.

He explained that burning the methane is better for the environment because it creates a chemical reaction that turns methane into water vapour and carbon dioxide, which is less harmful. (Methane is more than 20 times more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide).

Penner added: “Local people might say,

‘that’s odd, now there’s a flame there; you’re combusting it.

How can that be better for air quality?’ Well it actually is better for air quality than what’s currently taking place.”

While current plans are for the methane to be flared off, Penner said he hopes to eventually see the gas captured and sold as a source of clean energy.

Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz noted that improvements to the city’s waste infrastructure are vital, if not always exciting.

As part of the business plan, the proponents were asked what annual subsidy they would need from the city. Tourism Chilliwack requested $300,000, CCAC $344,000 and POP $464,000.

Tourism Chilliwack was determined to be the lead proponent and was given the contract by city council on Sept. 6.

Friday, the city announced a five-year management agreement for the operation of Heritage Park had been signed.

Two sources who asked to remain anonymous agreed it was “a little odd” that an organization owned by the city won a contract from the city. A city councillor and senior staffer sit on the board of Tourism Chilliwack.

Another source suggested there were irregularities in the contract, and even that the proponent seemed to know about the winning bid before it was voted on at the Sept. 6 meeting of city council.

Gaetz was unavailable to comment before press time.

olice are asking the public to help find a missing teen.

Amber Lynne Court, 16, was last seen Nov. 22 in the Meadowbrook Drive area.

She was reported missing the following day. While friends of Court have told police they have been in contact with her over the Internet, police have not been able to confirm that they have been speaking to the missing teenager.

So Mounties are asking anyone with information on Court’s wherabouts to contact them at 604-792-4611.

A new chapter for columnist

R

oughly a dozen years ago I stumbled onto a part-time, secondary career as a freelance newspaper opinion columnist. I certainly wouldn’t advise this to anyone hoping to pay the rent, but few undertakings can be as gratifying.

Over the years I’ve literally received thousands of emails from readers sharing their perspectives with me on the issues of the day. Some would clearly be unprintable in a family-oriented community newspaper.

But for the most part this feedback has been highly constructive and more than anything else, has given me a sense of what matters.

Sure, the media, politicians and others attempt to set the agenda and identify the most pressing priorities.

But I firmly believe these institutions need to listen to the people more, as opposed to telling them what their needs are.

It is with this thought in mind that I am seeking the BC Conservative nomination in the Chilliwack-Hope byelection.

Like many, I’ve always been somewhat cynical of politics and assumed I’d forever be on the sidelines. A member maybe. A volunteer or donor perhaps. But I could never see myself jumping on board with a political party and

I am convinced beyond any shadow of a doubt that the BC Conservatives offer precisely what the province needs. I am also convinced that the leader, John Cummins, exemplifies the integrity and down to Earth honesty that is so lacking in the political realm.

The Liberals are in free fall and haven’t, by any stretch of imagination, earned a fourth term. The BC Rail scandal alone merits a trip to the penalty box. The deceit with which the HST was introduced was a disgrace and indicative of the contempt the Liberals have for hardworking, tax-paying British Columbians who play by the rules.

Having said that, a return to the NDP is not an option. Anyone who lived through the nineties—the lost decade in which the NDP drove jobs, investment and lifelong citizens from the province—will surely agree.

For me, the BC Conservatives are the only mainstream, common-sense option and I want to do all I can to help them form government.

This is the last Crime Matters column I will be writing.

I am looking forward to meeting people and making new friends throughout the riding of Chilliwack-Hope as I seek support to become the nominee.

I can’t thank the Chilliwack Times enough for providing me the opportunity to share my views with the community and let off a little steam from time to time. OK, maybe a bit more often than that.

I also am indebted to those who took the time to read Crime Matters and especially those who contacted me with their comments and response.

This feedback has very much been an inspiration in my arriving at thisdecision.

Clearly, much of the public has soured on politics. There is a significant lack of confidence in the political process and that is a problem—a serious problem.

I very much want to be one small part of the solution to that problem.

etween the inclement weather that can descend on roads without notice at this time of year, and the stresses—and the joys— of the approaching season, driving can get a bit precarious in the weeks ahead.

You’ve been warned many times about the dangers of mixing alcohol with driving. You’ve been asked to find alternate modes of transportation when partying— designated drivers, taxis, buses—and we’ve told you about the opportunity to make use of Operation Red Nose [Sign up for Red Nose, Oct. 25, Chilliwack Times], in case you get caught out with your car and too much alcohol in your blood stream.

If you still are too dense to get that message, maybe it will have to be driven home for you at a roadside checkpoint put on by the good folks who kicked off this year’s December CounterAttack campaign last Friday.

For everybody’s sake—including your own—we hope that, if there’s no other way to get through to you, a police officer has an opportunity to help you understand your folly before you get around to doing serious damage to yourself or someone else.

But as we noted at the outset, there’s more to be concerned about on the roads at this time of year than drinking drivers.

Make sure your car is suitably outfitted for the winter weather that is sure to be ahead. Ensure that you are equipped with appropriate tires, and that your vehicle is properly winterized, so you don’t find yourself stranded in an inopportune time and place.

Remember that the roads can be suddenly and unexpectedly slippery at this time of year, so it’s a really good idea to try and slow down a bit.

And for gosh sake, just drive carefully.

Try to make it all the way to Christmas, and right through to the other side of the New Year.

We voted, but not in numbers large enough to count Editor: Re: Last week’s poll question “Are you satisfied with the Nov. 19 municipal election results” which came back with more than 60 per cent saying “No.” Well then, just over 17 per cent of the people of Chilliwack voted in a new/old council, am I the only one who thinks someone should start a recall campaign?

The people of Promontory can’t get fire protection, the people of Yarrow and Greendale get no new pumps to stop flooding and the Rosedale people can’t get potholes fixed. The downtown is having money poured at it and it still looks like Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

We are having a Langley company building an new un-used $4 million dollar library in Sardis, a Surrey company fixing our sidewalks, and Richmond and Vancouver outside contractors hired to give us ignored reports, and the council worries about giving us a new logo. When will someone step up to stop this waste of money?

Folks, you got rid of the HST, now recall the council that only 17 per cent of Chilliwack just put in, who are raising your taxes four per cent this year and are going to contuinue to raise them four per cent in future years. is insulting and reprehensible that a politician should have the arrogance to tell the people where their vote belongs—well of course unless your name is Stalin or one of the other dictators that plagued our world.

And, her example obviously doesn’t apply with federal politics as she ran for MP and she did this when the conservative vote has been firmly with the federal Conservatives for 17 years. If she is a small “c” conservative why would she try to split away the vote from the Conservatives? Did she see her job as letting the NDP win federally? If she applies her own provincial methodology to federal politics she would have concluded that she should not run, but she did and came in a distant third. Or maybe she ran to give people choice. This is really what I believe her reasoning was behind her failed bid for a seat in Parliament, and she was right to run.

I find it very interesting that she continues to argue that the right-of-centre vote, belongs in the provincial Liberal party. I really don’t believe that small “c” conservatives like being told where they belong. It

To simply say you must vote provincial Liberal or we will get NDP is the politics of fear and has no logical basis in the battle for good democratic governance. Janzen is just one of the people trying to convince you to vote Liberal. Albertans like Preston Manning and Jay Hill (Calgary resident) have waded into British Columbia politics. Manning just happens to have one of his senior board members as an advisor to Christy Clark and the provincial Liberals. Jay Hill is a lobbyist. If you follow the money it seems there may be other reasons for this desire to keep the provincial Liberals in office. But at the end of the day all of these folks at one time believed in real choice whether it was Reform, Alliance, Liberal, Progressive Conservative or Conservative.

There will be three or more parties on the ballot in the coming elections in B.C., and, just like in federal or other provincial campaigns, people will have a choice, and politicians should resist trying to tell people where their vote belongs, because no matter how firmly you believe your base is, the people’s vote is always fluid waiting for the arrogance of a government to rear its

head. And when it does, the voters make their own decision.

Small gesture by Chief a very big hit

Editor: You’d be surprised how one small gesture can make someone’s day. I know I was when the two minutes Chiefs forward Spencer Graboski took made not only my day, but the day of an entire minor hockey team.

I’ve been volunteering as the liaison to minor hockey for the Chiefs since September, and I have never seen a team happier than the moment they met Spencer.

On his way back to the dressing room during our last home game versus Penticton, Spencer stopped at the tunnel where the Timbits players wait before going on the ice.

I told the team to say hello, knowing that a quick glimpse is the most the kids usually get of the players and even an acknowledgement from one of them was a treat. Spencer smiled at the team and started walking down the tunnel, patting them all on the head as he walked one way and giving each of them a fist bump as he went back. It sounds like such a trivial thing, but that little gesture put a smile on each of their faces.

I don’t think he even knows how much it meant to them.

Penner announced on Nov. 24 that he would step down as MLA for Chilliwack-Hope in early January to take a job as senior partner with Vancouver law firm Davis LLP. On Nov. 6, former school trustee, city councillor and federal Liberal candidate Diane Janzen announced she would seek the nomination for the BC Liberals to replace Penner.

On Saturday, she changed her mind and said she would not run for the nomination.

Janzen told the Times last week that Chilliwack’s right-of-centre voters should be wary of Cummins and his party.

“A vote for the BC Conservatives is a vote for the NDP. Period,” Janzen told theTimes.

“That really offends me,” Martin responded.

“In a democracy you should be able to vote for JANZEN, from page 1 feel free to support the candidate of their choice.

“Chilliwack is a remarkable community of ‘can do’ entrepreneurs and caring and compassionate citizens,” she said in the release.

“I value the opportunity to have served this great community.”

With the imminent announcement of a candidate for the BC Conservative Party nomination in the riding, there was question about whether Janzen was small “c” conservative enough for Chilliwack-Hope.

When asked about this by the Times, Janzen said: “A vote for the BC Conservatives is a vote for the NDP. Period. The right-ofcentre vote has been firmly in the BC Liberal camp and it needs to stay there. . . .

Dennis Adamson, Area A director for the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD), confirmed to the Times he will seek the NDP nomination for the Chilliwack-Hope riding.

Former NDP candidate Gwen O’Mahony has yet to announce if she will seek the nomination.

None of the three main parties have announced a date for nomination meetings, but all plan on holding one in the new year.

If Penner steps down on Jan. 2, a byelection would have to be called within six months. However, a byelection needs to be called for Port Moody-Coquitlam by March, and Premier Christy Clark has said it would make sense to hold both elections on the same day.

The BC Conservatives reacted to Janzen quitting the race, and compared it to Joe Trasolini in Port Moody. Trasolini is the outgoing mayor of Port Moody, a BC Liberal supporter in the 1990s, who is seeking the NDP nomination for the byelection in Port Moody-Coquitlam.

“Candidates are abandoning Christy Clark’s Liberal party in key ridings,” said BC Conservative leader John Cummins. “Why is the governing party having such a hard time finding qualified people willing to run in seats they won easily in the last election?”

Community

Change is never hopeless

“B

e the change you want to see in the world” are the famous words of Mahatma Gandhi, which are set to remind us that we need to be better people and impact the damaged world around us.

Words like these are ones that inspire and motivate people not just of the adult society, but also the younger generation, as well. The more we witness adults performing acts of humanitarianism in the media and right here at home, the more it pushes us, as the up-and-coming leaders of tomorrow, to do more in the community.

But we’re only kids, right?

We couldn’t possibly know what this world needs, or how the gap between firstand third-world countries is expanding. That, however, is where you’re wrong.

In my school, there are multiple clubs dedicated to issues from poverty to homophobia, and I am proud to say that each one of them is student led. Groups that I am apart of, like the Humanitarian Club and the Be the Change Committee, commit their time each week to planning events and fundraisers, in order to spread awareness about global and local issues.

For example, at Humanitarian Club, we are putting on

Grad Notes our annual Global Gala this coming May to raise money for a global and local organization. The driving force behind it all is simple: there needs to be a drastic change in this world and we are the ones who possess the means to make it happen. But why would we, being high school students with a multitude of our own worries, care about creating a brighter future for the world we live in?

“No matter who you are or what you do in life, we should all try and be good humanitarians,” says my peer, Kaylee Kozyniak. To her, it doesn’t matter your age or your education level because “No one is on this Earth alone.”

Despite the fact that many high school students are too young to even vote in an election, young adults and teenagers still possess an opinion on how this world should operate and what it should look like. Age is simply a number; passions are still passions, no matter how many years you have been

on this Earth. If, as students, we’re truly committed to giving back to our community and helping those around us, we will uncover the information we need in order to support our cause. Whether it is a small community project we’re interested in, or a globally impacting organization, we students who run and are a part of these clubs in my school all have a hunger for social change. To me, being a humanitarian is something that brings hope and determination to my life and to those around me. In all honesty, I don’t feel like I’m fighting a hopeless battle because I know that my contribution will make something of an impact in the future, even if it’s only on a handful of lives. If I can give back to the community that raised me, sheltered me, and cared for me, then that is succes.

It doesn’t matter how many hours are spent planning a project, or how many lunch hours are given up for club meetings because in the end, it all pays off. Seeing the progress made within my school, knowing that people are being affected by the work we’re putting in, and witnessing the changes in those who we’re helping, that, to me, is complete and utter satisfaction as a humanitarian.

With your help the Food Bank distributed hampers to almost 8,000 singles & families in need.

Our volunteers have committed over 19,834 hours to our community.

The Thrift Store offers used clothing, household items and furniture at low prices. Funds raised from Thrift Store sales are used to provide for the other programs at the Salvation Army. Last year we supplied $76,300 of clothing & household goods to those in need.

Youth Safe House

Kids Games, a week long, sports themed day camp, is offered at the church for school aged children during the summer months. We also offer a traditional week of VBS. Holiday Camps last a full week for community children at Camp Sunrise near Gibsons on the beautiful Sunshine Coast. Holiday Camps are available by application only.

Serving children and teens from age twelve to eighteen.

Open from 3:00 pm to 9:00 am every night by referral from Chilliwack Youth Services, local youth pastors, school counselors, or by selfreferral.

The Salvation Army in Chilliwack has a dedicated Outreach Worker to serve as an advocate to connect homeless individuals with the agencies that can assist them. The goal is to provide a long-term housing and support solution that includes mental health, addiction recovery, and employment assistance.

The Emergency Homeless Shelter is open 365 days a year, including Christmas! Each guest receives supper, a hot shower, clean sheets, toiletries, and breakfast the next morning.

alents will be tested, skills will be scrutinized and Christmas spirit will be celebrated all in the name of local charity at Minter Country Garden’s “Elf Olympics” this Saturday at 11a.m.

Last year saw the local garden center’s first “fun-raising” activity of this kind, with nine community-oriented men competing in the “Gentlemen’s Gingerbread Invitational” for a chance to win $1,000 for the Chilliwack charity of his choice. Winner Ken Popove, whose donation went to Chilliwack General Hospital, returns this year as a judge for a whole new kind of competition.

“Last year’s gingerbread challenge was great fun and the gentlemen were fantastic sports. To keep it interesting though, we’re changing things up this time around,” explains Country Garden spokesperson Erin Minter.

Contestants will have 30 minutes to complete a series of holiday-themed activity stations.

“Think Minute to Win It meets The Amazing Race, at the North Pole,” Minter said.

The winner will once again be awarded $1,000 to donate to the Chilliwack charity of his choice.

Specific details of the challenges will not be revealed until the start of the competition but attendees are sure to see quite the display of talent. The list of 10 willing “elves” is varied, with backgrounds ranging from business to sports, entertainment to emergency services. he Chilliwack Chiefs were twice as good as the Trail Smoke Eaters this weekend to take four points from the struggling Kootenay side.

The Chiefs doubled up the Smoke Eaters 2-1 Saturday and 63 Friday to move past the Vernon Vipers and into third place in the BCHL’s Interior Conference.

In doing so, Chilliwack finally overcame the second-period demon that had haunted the team in recent weeks.

The Chiefs failed to capitalize on early chances and fell behind Friday, as Smoke Eaters Erik Cooper and Taylor House beat Chiefs starter Mitch Gillam 54 seconds apart to take a two-goal lead into the first break.

But Chilliwack came out strong in the second and made Trail pay when Smoke Eaters forward Adam Wheeldon was tossed from the game and handed a five-minute major for hitting from behind.

Derek Huisman’s 12th goal of the season two minutes through the prolonged power play drew Chilliwack closer.

Mathieu Tibbet evened the score when he cut around a Trail defender and in on net then banged his own rebound past Trail goalie Lyndon Stanwood.

The game got even nastier in the dying seconds of the period, as Chiefs forward Trevor Hills also earned an early shower and a major penalty for a head shot.

Chiefs assistant coach Doug Ast was pleased to see his team grab the four points, especially considering the long road trip that began last Wednesday with an 11-hour drive to Prince George.

“The third game on a road trip like that is real tough and I think the guys showed some good character,” Ast told the Times, although he added that his team still needs to limit its turnovers.

And while Trail has only won five games all season, Ast said the Smokies put up a good fight.

“They were two tough games,” he said. “Trail played real well.”

Spruce Kings dethroned The Chiefs’ opened their road trip with a 3-2 win last Wednesday over the Prince George Spruce

It was a game Harvey Smyl’s crew was just happy to make. An accident closed Highway 99 for more than an hour, leaving the team briefly stranded.

It reopened in time, however, for the Chiefs to arrive at the rink an hour-and-a-half before puck drop.

Crucial game While it’s still early in the season, Ast and company know that Wednesday’s game against the upstart Merritt Centennials may be one of the most important of the young season.

Merritt sits five points ahead of the Chiefs, but Chilliwack has three games in hand.

“We’re all very aware of the standings as a group,” said Ast.

W. Graham’s senior boys basketball team justified their place near the top of this year’s AA rankings last weekend.

They took third place at their first tournament, putting in strong performances against a couple of top AAA teams. Graham narrowly lost their first game 78-70 against a 10th-ranked AAA squad from Walnut Grove, that went on to win the tournament.

Graham was up by 10 points at the half but came out flat in the third quarter.

“Those were the only three minutes of the game we lost,” said coach Mouritzen.

The Grizzlies went on to trounce Princess Margaret 126-60 in the their second game and won the backside of the draw by 18 points against Enver Creek, another strong AAA team.

he provincial organization that oversees Chilliwack Minor Hockey has struck a committee to look at introducing non-body checking hockey in the Fraser Valley.

Currently, all male minor hockey players in both house and rep leagues in Chilliwack begin body checking when they enter PeeWee—at approximately the same age players are in Grades 6 and 7.

There is only one league in the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association—of which Chilliwack Minor Hockey is a member—that offers hockey without bodychecking. (The PCAHA calls such leagues “body contact,” which stresses the fact that the hockey still contains an element of physical play). But that league only operates in Metro Vancouver. Chilliwack players can register, if they wish to travel such distances.

PCAHA president Vanna Achtem said no decisions have been made, but that the organization is looking at its options.

“We’re just exploring ideas at this point,” said Achtem.

“I think we’d like to make the options available throughout all of our C leagues.

Parents are wanting it. Unfortunately, like I said, a lot of the teams out in the Fraser Valley, and the organizations, haven’t been able to create it.”

While the PCAHA’s committee will consider the various options—including offering both bodychecking and non-bodychecking house leagues—Achtem said no

decision will be made until next spring.

“Is it reasonable for them to drive into Richmond or into Burnaby for a practice or home games because they want to play on a body contact team?” said Achtem. “We need to be able to offer both.”

Still, she said the decision will come down to PCAHA members, who will vote in May on whatever recommendation is put forward.

Achtem said her organization would like to hear parents’ thoughts on the issue.

Sports Haney Heat burns and blanks Chilliwack Lunachicks The Chilliwack Lunachicks travelled to Pitt Meadows on the weekend to face the defending champion Haney Heat in over-30 women’s soccer action.

The Lunachicks pressed early and carried an edge in the overall play, but it was the Heat who struck first, with a goal at the 12-minute mark. The game featured a number of scoring chances by both sides; the best Lunachick chance came in the second half when Andrea Feaver took a nice through ball from Janelle Cavanaugh. Feaver deked the Haney keeper, who came well out to challenge but recovered just enough to get a hand on Feaver’s shot towards the empty net.

Haney sealed the victory at the 30-minute mark of the second half as the game ended 2-0. Coach Joe Hall was happy with the opportunities created by his team but was disappointed in the result.

Hall said: “We have now faced all the teams in this division, and I’m confident we can compete with every team.

The Strikers kept the opposition on their heels in the second half and attacked aggressively to try and retake the lead.
